Come with me – The Horse – to a dark and mysterious cave far out in the mountains of Zakynthos. As we explore a truly unique, weird and wonderful place – the bat cave of Hagioti.
Far away from the tourist resorts, miles out into the mountains, lies a small, hard to find cave.
After driving over 2km on a rough dirt track, I arrive at the abandoned kiosk where I begin my walk to find the caves entrance.
It’s a short walk and soon I arrive.
Disaster! No ladder to climb into the cave. But I improvise and make my way inside the cave.
I crawl through a small gap in the rocks barely a metre high and am met with darkness – and the sound of fluttering wings.
As my eyes adjust to the darkness, I continue deeper into the dark cave.
The cave floor is slippery from the bat guana, so falling is a real risk. So I push forward slowly.
Then I come to the first chamber of the cave – a massive cave around 8-9 metres floor to ceiling.
There are hundreds of bats. Some fly towards me but always change direction last minute before they crash into me.
Visiting the Hagioti cave in an enchanting, unique and wonderful experience you won’t forget.
