Impressions of HELSINKI, Finland – History, Shops and Prices!

They say is the happiest country in the world 5.6 million people and 2 million SAS they listen to some noisy heavy metal music and they play air guitar Which is less noisy it’s also the home of this lock your phone welcome to Helsinki the capital of Finland care you to join me

Hello hello hello El sinki in winter certainly a very cold experience but we are going to heat it up in this Vlog and I’m going to take you on a tour of the city and the main SES and tell you a little bit about the history and it’s going to be

Good fun and here is one of those 2 million SAS in the country that I just referred to and part of your SAA experience involves taking a dip in the ice cold water back there so yeah perhaps something we will skip today but with you’re in Finland

Definitely take up a chance to do this it’s a wonderful experience and I have to say I do love the SAA I’m less keen on the cold water and in front here you’ve got the flying Cinema where you can take a tour of Helsinki and Finland virtually you’ve got a ferris wheel as

Well and the rest of the harbor area here so quite a nice experience to walk down here and the City of Helsinki has about 673 th000 people and that is the city however if you take into account The Wider Urban population it’s closer to 1.3 million so

It’s quite a large city and I think it’s the northernmost city in the world with more than 1 million people so quite an interesting fact there plenty of dogs here as well taking a stroll on a cold Winters day I bet they must be used to

It cuz they do seem to love these walks with their owners and yeah in the harbor you can also take some Ferry rides to see other parts of Helsinki let me tell you a little bit about the history of Finland in general and Helsinki in particular so the first inhabitants here in Finland

I’ve read were here about 10,000 years ago and then in subsequent centuries the Swedish and then the Russians ruled Finland so the star date of the Swedish rule is actually quite contested and maybe even controversial many scholars say that it started in the late 13th century and what is maybe a little bit

More clearcut is the period of Russian rule which started in 1809 so Russian rule from 1809 and Finland gained independence in 1917 on the 6th of December 1917 they claimed Independence Finland also retained its independence during World War II but he didn’t become part of a Soviet Union for example like

The Baltic countries and in terms of politics Finland was also the first European country to allow women to vote and they did so in 1906 we walk here past the love locks where you can immortalize your love forever let’s just pick out a random one here Yari or Jerry and Heidi

On 157 2022 there’s your love lock so congratulations to you anyway it was the Swedish King Gustaf the first who founded Helsinki as the town of Hing force in 1550 and Hing Force remained a small fishing Village for about two centuries and King Gustaf wanted the town really to

Consolidate trade here in the southern part of Finland he wanted to create a competitor for raal which we talked about when we were in Talen the former name of Talen is raal yeah just another perspective here of elsi here next to the Flying Cinema and the restaurant complex here

The flying Cinema elsi in Finland like never before yeah you can get a combo ticket for 22 normal price €27 so I have to say Al sink is not the cheapest place in the world so keep that in mind when you do come here but it’s a lovely lovely experience

To walk around here another view year of a palm and there’s actually some interesting L graffiti next to it as well and there’s a ferris wheel and here’s where you can buy your tickets for the restaurant complex in sauna or SAA so anyway Hing force was established as

A competitor to Rafal to consolidate trade in the Baltic area but the original location was too shallow for the vessels to pass or to properly conduct trade so they moved the city to the actual current location the city center in the 7 18 century and in 1812 the Russians moved the Finnish capital

From turu to Helsinki and the reason being that they wanted the Finnish Capital to be closer to Modern Day St Petersburg which at the time was the capital of the Russian Empire so there’s the history of Helsinki for you in a nutshell but I want to take you to this

Very impressive Orthodox Cathedral next the mightily impressive uspensky Cathedral the main Orthodox Cathedral here in Finland and undoubtedly one of the key landmarks of Helsinki and this church was consecrated in 1868 on this day though it is covered in snow and it looks absolutely magnificent just more from this angle

As well please do not step on the grass but the grass is entirely covered in snow and as you walk down here from the uspensky cathedral you can also see the alink cathedral in the foreground there the luofan cathedral yeah there you’ve got a better shot of it and I’ll talk more

About it when we get there so yeah walking here down Canal Garden so maybe the channel Canal that’s what it refers to it doesn’t look particularly easy to navigate at this point very very cold wow this traffic light is a little bit skew so I’ve read

That the fins love a cup of coffee in fact they drink more coffee per capita than any other country in the world and apparently it’s not unusual for people here to drink more than eight cups a day so that is quite the caffeine kick don’t you think so they love

Coffee and in terms of popular culture games or characters of course mman is from here and the Angry Birds video game is also finished so it originated here and it was founded by two students I’ve also read the games creation company went on to become listed publicly in

2017 at $1 billion so that was quite a good investment yeah I wonder what students would do with $1 billion that was quite a good return for them and I’m going to make a bold statement but I’m going to say the greatest mobile game ever is snake from Nokia

And in fact noia is also a Finnish company and it actually started as a paper producing company believe it or not in the year 1865 and it’s also named after a river a river here in Finland called the noan verta the noan verta so there you go and Clash of Clans

Is a game that I have not played but apparently that is Finnish as well so Finland as a giant in the mobile gaming World noia snake Angry Birds and Clash of Clans but anyways look where we are we are in the heart of Helsinki and that’s the Helsinki

Cathedral and they also have Christmas markets here because it’s Christmas time let’s go and check it out out here is a plan of the markets so various stands and what they are so 108 stands wow and of course Santa Claus himself is considered to be from Finland from the town of rui

In Lapland I hope I pronounced that right so apologies to all my Finnish viewers if I made a mess of that but yes just look at all the people here during the day all the different markets selling all kinds of produce and a lot of handmade stuff you got some Chocolat over

There and a lot of glue wine that I can almost immediately smell as well yeah little Christmas trees as well and you can see the decorations here on top of the stands and a fair bit of snow as well see there’s some jams looks like peanut butter perhaps yeah something warm

And something meaty as well for sale here and right next to it some nice soaps smell nice yes it looks like the whole of Helsinki out here today enjoying the fun the festivities and yeah lots of stands lots of different areas as well so here youve got jewelry and other handcraft socks and

Candles so lots of variety look there more soaps candles and here is their Christmas tree in Helsinki right next to the Helsinki Cathedral probably the postcard of Finland this building here I was lucky enough to see it on my previous visit in 2008 and I’ll put up a photo for you right

Now so this is a luan Cathedral and it was built between 1830 to 1852 so during the Russian Empire the Russians wanted the buildings in Helsinki to more closely resemble the buildings in St Petersburg H why this church takes a form of new classical building and new classical buildings of course

Emphasize form and structure and practicality oversay the excesses of the late Barack style and from a practical perspective yes they’ve removed the snow here but the kids are still going down on the snow covered stairs using it as a a ramp to go down so health and safety not a concern yet

And here in front of Helsinki Cathedral and the Christmas tree you have a statue of Alexander the second so he’s also known as Alexander The Liberator because he’s probably best known for the abolition of surom in 1861 in the Russian Empire so there is his statue here in front of the elsi cathedral

Right so let’s leave the Christmas Market area and explore more of a center down there loads of shops in that area I believe and I’ll also tell you a little bit more about Helsinki as a sporting City so of course this is an Olympic City they hosted the Olympics in

1952 and they were originally going to host it in 1940 so Japan they dropped out of a race they couldn’t host it in 1940 but then of course the war happened so Helsinki had to host it in 1952 Helsinki is also the northernmost City to ever host a Summer Olympic

Games and it was also the first Olympics in which the Soviet Union participated and it was also an Olympics where a lot of world record were broken in fact before the Beijing Olympics of 2008 this Helsinki Olympics of 1952 was the Olympic Games in which the most world records were

Broken so there you go Helsinki as an Olympic City and Finland of course has also given us some great Formula 1 drivers over the years so thinking of names like mikah hakan and Kim riken and of course this is also where the sport of Wife Carrying which I briefly talked about in

Estonia Wife Carrying also originated here I’d love to know more about it so if you’re from Finland and you know more about this sport then I do please let us know in the comments do you participate in it what is it like to watch what is the significance to the people of

Finland yeah now you can see we are in theard part of Helsinki yeah I think it’s called Alexander Gata Alexander Street and you can see the Christmas lights up here as well and people enjoying a bit of a Saturday shop this he’s a Saturday and yeah loads of trams passing here as

Well they literally was just w a minute ago so people making sure they get places and get there efficiently here some of the shops here in Helsinki Jerry Weber Max Mara dansa bankk one of the banks and more company names there as well and cloy and Nono I think is how you pronounce

It Finland does have a reputation for being an expensive country and Helsinki as an expensive city so I’m Keen to explore some shops and check out the prices yeah I think this might be a German company I’m not sure let’s have a look here we go $109.99 $125.99 warm jacket here $ 169.99

Wow and this one $179.99 or 180 yeah looks like they love pink and purple here in Finland some colorful clothes in a cold country at least at the moment yeah there may be colorful clothes in the shop but a lot of people wear black here in Finland well there’s okay

A little bit of color around there right let’s go and check out this cloy I think it’s a mall lots of different shops see what it’s like see what a mall in Finland looks like here you’ve got Joe and the juice which I’ve seen before country such as Iceland very very

Popular and you have NSO with which is a clothing shop let’s just quickly check that out so green jerseys here 84 of us 40% off he has a great option as well for 84 this unique years 42 42 this dress 48 black jeans down from 110 to 66 this Polo

30 108 for this Gable insulation jacket different colors as well Wen socks here 1047 they look pretty thick though 1257 for that goes up to 1607 let’s check out Maranello you pick up a colorful jacket here for $79 80 look at my price $49 or one of the garments here if you

Have a new collection here and a150 9 for this jacket it do seem very warm though I have to say your nice colorful bags as well you can see they’re 98 there you go some trousers 129 surge mosh mosh 129 these colorful hats 59 some warm peace knitted jerseys €69 If

It Makes You Happy do it yeah so it’s fair to say CU you been to that clo shop and now to this one as as well as the Jerry Weber fair to say that clothes are not cheap in Finland a shoe shop here as well let’s have a look at some shoes at

That sketchers air cooled memory Pham huge variety check out this one €159 and this one over here 149 so that was a glimpse of Sho prices as well yeah check out these Christmas trees here as well F of spirit in Helsinki they do have a bigger one year as well right so

That was just a little bit of a mall so let’s get back on the street and experience more of the magic of Helsinki let’s walk down here more luxury shops over here as well and check this out of Burger King down of course there’s the Burger King here in elsi

And I’m not sure which one it is but you can go in SAA in it as well so there’s a Burger King with a SAA here in Helsinki and More close shops there dressman and another luxury shopping center here by the looks of it right let’s go and check out some of this

Galleria of comp Galleria and see what we can find let’s let see what we can find looks pretty luxurious here we go we are Jimmy Nordic luxury made in Finland let’s have a look hi is it okay to have a look yes of course thank you yeah handmade stuff

Ready for the finished winter 125 these gloves here 460 this hat for 375 I think I’ll stick with my one although this one looks pretty warm as well more warm stuff here and this one is 3270 this Jack definitely at the luxury end of the scale I would say in terms of price

Range but yes something for everyone in Helsinki I guess here’s another shop here Arch type Nordic style sustainably made kitchen towel 17 you have a sweater Stone 15 and brush for Linton animal here 27 birthday candles for sale as well various prices 25 19 14 you have some beanies here as well

59 this one sweaters as well Marina wool turtleneck scarf 85 you can see glass Rings a 46 earrings 120 little potet 24 storing little bits and Bobs jewelry there as well bracelet there 135 lar shopping here in Helsinki yeah nice shopping center this comp Galleria the beautiful glass ceiling as

Well you can see there people in Helsinki enjoying the luxuries of life and here we go here’s a lot of color here colorful hats colorful glass colorful candles so color overload and obviously Christmas spirit as well with the trees a little book of beer here to Perfection pey blinders

Cocktail B look at Downtown Abbey popular in Finland and it’s called My Oh My Home this beautiful shop here in El sinki Japanese food popular year as well Haiku little restaurant sushi right I think this is a little bit above my price range so let’s go and explore more of Helsinki instead maybe

Grab some food at some place see what is Affordable we’re back at street level here dressman and the tra of Helsinki so Helsinki does not have an Old Town like you’ll find in vus or r or Talen you will will find a lot of luxury shops though and some very interesting buildings as

Well look at some of those figures there that appear to hold up the balcony yeah I wonder what they are are they mer men or are they other creatures of a sea let me know in the comments Finland of course a high income country with a high human development index and based on

What I’ve seen today Helsinki has a lot of lar shops so if you like your L Dar shopping this is definitely the place for you for us backpack is counting the pennies we can just look and admire the beauty of some of the buildings and do some window shopping so just off

The street here we have a little passage so let’s see what a finish passage looks like I think this is leading up to something nice more restaurants and shops here although no people really in this little passage they are more cats here and people look at that

Ven Venia aavia I think is how you say it with a cat let’s just check up cuz I think there might be a nice statue out there let’s check out this statue right ano so I don’t know who a no l no is so this is where I’m going to ask my Finnish

Friends or anyone else who knows if he knows who anuu is let me know in the comments reference to zacharius topus so let’s try it here we go yeah obviously I’ll need internet people became increasingly nationalistic and patriotic passionate to be Finnish in the 19th century one of the most

Significant Works in Finnish literature was published in 1835 and it was called calala the calala and more Publications in Finish appeared and people started to write more books and other literature unfortunately then you also had the Finnish Famine of 1866 to 1868 and that was catastrophic and after

The famine a lot of immigration to other parts of the world also happened so those were key events in the 19th century year in Finland and after the famine there was a lot of investment from Russia in Finland so actually the development of a country was actually quite rapid

Afterwards and I also mention that this country reached Independence in 1917 on the 6th of December they remained independent ever since they are a fiercely patriotic and proud people and they also have a lot of monuments honoring people here in the city and well they don’t have Santa

Just yet maybe they should have a statue of Santa because he is finished but they do have his reindeer and his Slave how fantastic and then they do have a statue here of who is it v lant v v lant Foster this that looks like a poem rather sorry that’s not a person

Yes again finish friends please help me out who is this and who do they represent well hopefully Santa’s not too far because what will happen to all the Christmas presents if he’s not around so Santa please get back to your sleigh and your reindeer here in Helsinki and we are here on nor

Esplanada and more luxury shops luxury stuff for sale and some interesting color there as well next to the Christmas tree yeah just a lovely area to walk around here loads of Christmas trees and yeah beautiful lights and also some animals in light other works of art or things placed here for aesthetic value

Yeah beautiful beautiful building yeah if you want to up your bag collection Selina Gucci Balenciaga GCI Fendi Etc this is where you come so a lot of money and a lot of L dah here in this part of Helsinki right let’s continue our walk here on Alexander’s gatan I’ve just noticed a

Picture there of a hamster wonder what that’s about check out the interesting sculptures animals here on this building poola and you have KERO some people’s spces there as well and coola well wonder what they represent and I can also see the big Stockman over there which is another

Big complex here in Helsinki check out this shop sualin Mal in all the beautiful lights and next to it bit more of a brutalist field World Trade Center so we are probably in the financial heart as well yeah there’s some clothing shops on the ground level though of a World Trade

Center and here we passing another shop Mari Meco just such an interesting language isn’t it interesting names yeah beautiful display window here Mari Meco they even got this bag here rotating on a colorful rotative a yeah helsinki’s really trying to push the pink narrative but you don’t see a lot of

Pink on Street you see a lot of black you see the odd red coat perhaps and yeah I’d say black and red bizar are the most popular color choices right and you’re opposite the Stockman Center I think this is a way to the Central Station yeah here we go Jungle

Juice Bar just opposite the City Center shopping center I reckon going to have a bit of a vitamin kick and get myself a smoothie right there’s the Smoothie menu up there I ordered a pink pan for Smoothie the big one for $7.49 well expensive but yes this easy whole

Sinky so welcome to the real world and here it is guys my nutrition kick I believe it’s got strawberry by the red color as you can see there also passion fruit pineapple and banana can’t really taste a particular fruit but it’s a very nice smoothie maybe a touch sweet but very very

Refreshing Jungle Juice Bar some of the other options I’ve got here and we also have sandwiches here look you can buy and yeah just a very nice place here in Helsinki in Armenia I mentioned to you that smoothies is a great way to get your vitamins or your minerals back you

Don’t have to carry a lot of fruit travel tip is go for smoothies right so I just finished my smoothie at the Jew’s bar and I came outside and it’s getting darker by the second almost and it’s only 3:00 of course not a lot of light in the winter

Months in this part of the world and in fact in the summer months when it’s really light they don’t apparently sleep late either because they have a national sleepy day believe it or not on the 27th of July where the last person to wake up usually gets thrown into a lake or they

Pour some cold water on it and I’ve also been told that that usually happens at around 7 a.m. so if you’re not up by 7:00 a.m. it’s considered a late sleep so I’m Keen to hear from the people people in Finland don’t you like

Sleeping late have a bit of a l in or is it just on that particular day where you need to be up early right City Center shopping center let’s go check it out maybe see if we get to a supermarket or something oh we’ve stumbled across some singing here [Applause] I am Oh thank you that was very nice so let’s check out more of a mall here yeah I’m Keen to get to a supermarket just to see how much things cost and I think they EAS a little yeah that should give us a good idea IDE of

How much things cost here in Finland in Helsinki this little where I’m from at least is considered one of the more budget Supermarket let’s check it out maybe see if we can pick up some finish local food as well we have H avocados $3.99 I think these are the Golden Delicious ones so

$259 per kilo conference B is239 and some of the other prices here so fruit looks to be all right 149 bag of radishes $299 for all of those Tomatoes some rice options various prices there $2.99 1 kilo and 175 here for this bag quite a big

Bag 2 kilos more of a sweets here I guess many of this will be German cuz Little’s a German company prices for cross on not too bad at all in fact these sausage cross signs here for a good price salmon there looks like €5 per kilo if you need your caffeine

Kick there’s some prices so this does look very expensive 8.89 for the mcafe gold Roy btia B of South Africa B of Clan William here in Helsinki 169 29 for a 500 more coke right so I did pick up two sausage roll cross arms here at little for €2

So if you’re ever in elsi I think that’s a pretty good deal you’re not going to get any cheaper than that so get yourself to a little and get some of these snacks just a bit of a stop Gap solution right so here go sausage roll cross on FY in

Helsinki it’s cold and I of course it didn’t expect it to be warm this is a really nice SOG pill for 1 EUR in y sinki sausage in a bun or a crossant bun I don’t quite know what this is some sesame seed so a bit of a prote team kick and a

Bit of a carb kick here’s a Bookshop called rose bud and just giving you a flavor of some of the magazines or other things that we read here in Finland look at that Canam Muki Muki something kasvatus kitaya and you have Pera if you want some culture Roman C

So that’s my best attempt at the language and some of the cards as well you can say caam maybe for some friendship and some books maybe not quite on kavala’s level or influence but nonetheless there we go look at the name of a shop normal it’s

Just a normal shop here in Helsinki and some flowers here for say look at this is it 12 or 2 for20 some of the other bouquet here looks like 28 and there’s some 40 options as well over here anyways we are at a Metro stop here inside this shopping mall

Really and let’s go and check out what a Finnish Railway Station Metro looks like so here we go looks very spacious and very clean it’s my first impressions lots of space it’s not crowded at all compare this to say London that looks to be the entrance to the Metro over there there

You’ve got the Metro Times listed there as well presumably and there’s some other shops over here as well including another Supermarket K Market hopefully they sell some finished stuff for us right here we go let’s check out we can see a finished chocolate wow check out

Their Pringles it’s 450 I don’t know if it’s for two or just one but even if it’s for two I’d say this is at the price here in in Finland they love licorice look at this L over there 266 or different prices here that one’s 294 but already made up to consume now

That’s where you are check here’s mman fruit candies so what are they phaser movement is it 195 for these and look in Finland they like chocolate they like Licorice and they like to combine it chocolate Licorice and here we have tupla chocolates I don’t know if I finish they look pretty

Distinct and different flavors wow you have double layer licorice double layer white nurt double layer mint double layer banana wow so which one shall I go for I reckon given that I’m in Finland and I know they like chocolate and licorice I’m going to have to try the double layer licorice one and

It’s 95 which I think is not bad it’s not as expensive as I thought it would be yeah what do you make of a price of Coca-Cola here in Finland so these ones $2.45 1.5 L Coke 339 here some finished drinks as well I’ve heard of Longo I

Know Longo means long drink so there we go there you go more Longo right what does their coffee cost here 655 for 100 G Nescafe and for the original ones a 5.99 look like a special and L Gray tea $2.99 though but the other te’s a green teas

575 I’m not going to have some of these but just show you some of the finished name so you have Sula cookie and you have Mau Sula Ki over there and another K Ki and in this one I understand you have a digestive all right everyone here’s with tupler let’s give it a

Shot so there’s the unboxing there it is so chocolate and some licorice hey I’m a bit nervous but let’s go just broken it up there you can see the licorice inside so yeah it goes I love chocolate I love Licorice and I cannot believe I’ve never tried the two of them together absolutely

Fantastic chocolate and licorice as a combination Finland I think think you taught me something new here I was really nervous to try this I did not think the two of them would work together but I guess it’s like a salted caramel maybe that’s a similar kind of

Thing you know a little bit of sweet and savory if that’s the right word or salty rather yeah so sweet and salty what a winning combination yeah we this chocolate thank you Finland for introducing me to Chocolate licorice right just outside the Central Railway Station

Metro and you know what else is big in Finland except Christmas Barbie so Finland you’ve changed my life in two ways firstly with a Nokia phone and secondly with chocolate licorice can you believe it I still have my Nokia phone after all these years in fact I mentioned to you in Armenia that

This is the best emergency phone you’ll ever need cuz it’s so durable and it’s got great reception wherever you go in the world and what’s also changed my life thanks to Finland is the chocolate licorish so Finland you are number one and here’s a big railway station here in

Helsinki all right let’s get a glimpse of train life yeah in Helsinki here we go a hesburger stand I’ve seen them across the baltics as well very popular and yeah quite a nice station presume they are also in the process of upgrading some stuff here yeah there you go information board

All the destinations you can go to here in Finland Roi that’s where Father Christmas is from in lap you can see some of the other places in Finland you can go to kopio imatra or Vasa and yes you can also get to the airport from

Here so this is where all need to come to catch a train to go back to London and here are the trains so quite spacious and it looks pretty organized yes so if you need a ticket to the airport this is where you come you can

See there in English and pretty easy you just press for one there to the airport and one adult looks to be yeah € 410 so not too bad Helsinki and Hing Force for 9 BS King Gustav the first gave to Helsinki yeah had another beautiful Lounge here the Burger King Lounge so to

Speak oh yeah these lights are very impressive and you can see it’s only 4:00 but very very dark I have to put the lights on and just the rest of a station here very very Picturesque yeah there’s the Ukraine flag and I have to say one thing that I didn’t find today which I find quite surprising is I’ve not seen a Finland flag yet anywhere in Helsinki so that did catch me by surprise yeah I just want to point out these two men holding those lights over

There and on that side as well I wonder what the significance is is the city center shopping mall from another angle yes so what is do you think of Helsinki please let me know in the comments and by the way guys if you haven’t done it yet please hit the like And subscribe

Buttons it’s free it doesn’t cost you anything and it really helps me out so it isn’t for you then I won’t be able to make these videos and take you to some exciting destinations like Helsinki so please help and support me all right everyone a bit late in the day

Maybe but I am in manim minty the main street here in Helsinki just look how wide and spacious it is and I can see why it’s the Main Street course there’s a lot of traffic certainly on that side maybe not so much this one but just look at the size of it

And I reckon let’s just stroll a little bit down here and see what we can find definitely what I’ve noticed of Helsinki is they like shopping and these shopping buildings are quite impressive actually there’s so much there’s so many shopping malls and shopping centers here yes Manheim minty let’s have a

Stroll here in one of the iconic streets of Helsinki the main street in fact and how’s it guys you all right yes blood debt I think that might be a newspaper that is with my best use of German and Africans trying to figure out if there’s any connection to finish Finland is

Often grouped together with Scandinavia when people talk about Finland but it is part of a noric countries and not part of Scandinavia so Scandinavia is Norway Sweden and Denmark but not Finland so just want to set the record straight yeah that must be the biggest McDonald’s sign I think I’ve ever seen ever

Anywhere in the world check this out there’s even an Irish P here in Helsinki and there’s our Irish friend hello my friend how did you get on at the Rugby World Cup yeah have one in France yeah I know you beat us but uh I think we we won the match that counted

But anyway nice to see you yeah just a bit of friendly banter with my Irish friend over there and yeah here’s the stman building lit up at night and yeah these lights at night actually makes Helsinki very magical as well the city does get a magical Edge at

Night night even the Burger King sign and the old Irish pop sign adds a magical touch in a weird way and I’ve noticed these AR Koski places as well so little convenience stores perhaps here in elsi and some of the deals actually you know what that’s not too bad considering we’re in

Elsi so maybe a coffee and a sandwich for 390 that’s good value yeah this is where you come in make your coffee and I believe the biggest one is € yes we have ISO the big one normali and Pen a small one and you have a choice of or Singapore for your

Morning Brew crosson 180 cheddar pie pasta for 180 yeah some of the prices we got looks like special combos are listed there as well we’ve got some smoothies there as well and some yogurts quite a nice shop and there you go Coca-Cola 325 yes so those were my Impressions from the

Arosi the arosi here in Helsinki so what are my impressions of Helsinki it’s actually quite a tree to walk around you can see there’s a lot of wealth in the city and a lot of lar shops expensive shops with premium Brands Etc but it’s really really nice to walk

Around it’s got a Touch of Class perhaps is the phrase I’m looking for certainly in the way that people in the city conduct themselves as well and I’ve noticed not many people necessarily talk on the street but that’s not unusual in Finland apparently so so the awkward silences

That we might experience in other countries apparently in finland’s completely fine there’s no such thing as awkward silence you actually just remain silent and you enjoy it which I think is great no to chat no uncomfortable chat so now it feels a bit like I’m in a movie with all these lights

And there’s a lot of people but no one is rushed people are just very relaxed and going about their walk which is fantastic so maybe that’s another observation I have about Helsinki people are not rushed maybe if you live here you’ll have a different experience but that’s

Just something that I picked up today on one day here in Helsinki people really seem not that bothered to chase whatever needs chasing the magic of Christmas here in Finland and the magic of the Helsinki Cathedral at night well I say night it’s only 20 to5 so still ask afternoon here in

Finland but anyway guys I thought now it would be a good chance to end this Vlog I hope you enjoyed the tour of Helsinki the capital of Finland if you haven’t done it yet please press the like button subscribe to the channel and leave a comment for me in the comment section

I’d love to hear from you but in the meantime I just want to say again thanks for watching my videos and I’ll see you in the next one cheers take it easy

Hi everyone! This is episode thirteen of my Baltics plus Finland series in which I travel to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland. In this video, I explore Helsinki, the capital of Finland in winter. Throughout the vlog, I provide my impressions of the city, as well as information in relation to history, culture, sport and other interesting bits!

The video starts with me walking around the harbour area where I briefly talk about the history of Finland in general and Helsinki in particular, as well as providing other interesting facts. I then walk towards the Uspenski Cathedral where we admire the beauty of this brilliant Helsinki landmark.

We then head to the city centre and spend some time at Senate Square, browsing the Christmas markets next to the Helsinki Cathedral. Following this, we visit some shops and malls in Alexandersgatan, notably the Kluuvi Shopping Centre and the Kämp Galleria to get an idea of clothing prices in Helsinki.

After realising the prices are a little bit outside my budget range, I decide we are better off admiring some more architecture, passages and monuments in the city. We stumble across a passage called Gamla (although further research seem to suggest this is called Wrede Passage). This leads to Esplanadi Park (or Espa) where we notice several monuments and where I talk more about Finland in the nineteenth century. Finnish friends – I need your help with identifying the relevant statues and who they are, so do let me know in the comments!

Walking back to Alexandersgatan we notice several more luxury shops and I decide to have smoothie at a juice bar opposite the Citycenter Mall. After receiving a nutritional kick, we explore the mall where we encounter a group of people singing a beautiful song. We then head down to a supermarket in the mall to observe more prices and I try a budget Helsinki snack.

As we explore the mall further, we stumble across more interesting shops as well as a metro station, where another supermarket is located. Here I decide to buy another item of interest, which I am a bit nervous to try…watch to see the result!

The Helsinki Railway Station is our next stop, where we walk through the terminal and I find out how much a ticket to the airport cost. We then walk briefly down Mannerheimintie, the main street in Helsinki, where I also provide more of my impressions of Helsinki. After crossing a few more streets and pedestrian areas, we arrive back at the Christmas markets, where the vlog ends.

I hope you enjoy this vlog of Helsinki! If you’re looking to the visit the city yourself in due course, I hope this is informative and gives you an idea of what to expect.

  1. Impressed by your knowledge of Finland! Cool to see your home town through visitor's eyes.

1:17 If the icy sea water sounds too much, you can choose the heated outdoor pool too 🙂

24:58 That passage becomes one big outdoor bar area in summer, has a nickname "granny tunnel", being popular among the 50+ old ladies especially 🙂

27:50 That's a statue of Johan Runeberg who wrote the lyrics to the Finnish national anthem, originally in Swedish "Vårt Land", Our Land. The other statues you saw are dedicated to other Finnish authors.

49:30 Yes a (Swedish language) newspaper
More Helsinki trivia: You probably noticed the streets have names in both Finnish and Swedish, the Finnish name above the Swedish one. Swedish still is the second official language in Finland.

The wife carrying championship takes place in one small town, not a national sport really, but well marketed obviously 🙂

  2. Helsinki is very beautiful, thank you for a comprehensive look around, Willie. Always great to see the shops and the prices. Certainly seemed to be a more relaxed pace of life there. It's a no from me on the chocolate liquorice though. I can just about cope with liquorice allsorts. Juice bar looked great👍

  3. Fantastic to get to see another city I’ve never been to! Looks very modern. Please take us down to one of the many beaches I’ve heard Helsinki have. And please would you explain, what do you actually use your Nokia for? I saw you have a smart phone aswell. Seems like good travel advice! Cheers 🍺🍺

  4. Thoroughly enjoyable time in Helsinki Thank you Willie: Kiwi from Virginia . . . PS, Thanks for putting me right on the scandinavian thing.. . lol.

  5. Your Finnish pronunciation is surprisingly good for a non-speaker. Almost everything was intelligible. Of course it's not perfect, meaning that you won't be mistaken for a native speaker. But don't hesitate using it since you will be understood easily.

  6. Awesome video! Even me and most people no matter where they're from, for what i know they too get overwhelmed by helsinki city centre prices, however that place does look very good! I've been there quite a few times, however the more "shady" areas of the city are always much cheaper. It really is easy to see where some people earn, for us atleast those prices are pretty intimidating though. Well, rovaniemi is a nice city even though compared to all the ones around the world, it's quite small but also i've gotten used to the prices there, even in the centre the bars are quite affordable lol

  7. Such an interesting video, Willie Explore! We are struggling with the heat here in South Africa – I wonder if we would survive the icy weather over there. You look quite warm, though!

  8. Great video! You had really done your homework well with history and other facts! Don't worry about your pronunciation of Finnish words. You're a lot better than an average English speaker. Not very far from perfect 🙂
You were wondering about some things during the video, so here you are:

25:15 viiniä ja ystäviä = wine and friends
25:30 Eino Leino was a writer who wrote many famous books.
25:51 Zacharias Topelius was also a famous writer and poet.
28:00 Johan Ludvig Runeberg, the national poet of Finland.
About 43:00 you tasted Tupla. The name means literally "double" because they contain two bars of chocolate. Nice to share eg. with a friend.
49:30 Hufvudstadsbladet is actually Swedish. You guessed right it's a newspaper. The biggest newspaper in Swedish language in Finland.

  9. I went to my local Prisma hypermarket but it didn't have that liquorice Tupla one available. 🙁 I bought the three ones to its right on this video, one of each. I don't think I've tasted any of the different flavours before, just the original one.

The original Tupla is a Finnish bar that was launched in 1960 and has been loved ever since. It's now produced by Cloetta, which has headquarters in Sweden and production all over Europe. AFAIU, they no longer have production in Finland.

  10. The passage that you went through has been given several nicknames, like "Granny tunnel" and "Jurassic Park", because during the Summer time it's a very popular party area for people of 40+.
Eino Leino (1878 – 1926) was a author, a poet and a journalist. There is statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877) in the middle of the Esplanade Park. He is the Finland's national poet and author of the Finnish national anthem.

  11. Really nice video 👍 did you know that under the city is nuclear proof bomb shelters for every person in the city. And in peace time they are used as a car parks, shops and gyms and everything possible, even swimming hall.

  12. Hey Willie , Helsinki is such a gorgeous city, I really enjoyed it so far and that chocolate liquorice certainly looked delicious , This city has such a unique character , keep it up brother 💪👊

  13. Rovaniemi has claimed Santa Claus for tourism purposes, but every Finn knows he is actually from Korvatunturi in the municipality of Savukoski. Right at the Russian border.

  14. A really nice city-tour, thank you! One pronunciation tip: Emphasis is always on the first syllable: It’s HELsinki, not helSINKI.
Same for all other words and place names as well.
    Cheers!

  15. as a finn i can say all the ladidahluxury shops are just for 1% of the people and tourists that tend to concentrate in the area.

i buy my t-shirts for 10€ a piece and wear rubber boots. Helsinki center is just a giant tourist trap, real people dont buy their stuff there.

Generally i have grown a huge aversion to shopping malls , that are 95% womens fashion bullshit clothes and useless "beautyware" for superficial women
and nothing interesting for men, except maybe food and watch at superficial women do shopping.

No self respecting man goes there, unless he works there or is forced by his female overlordtress (its a word now, get over it) to go there.

If you ever want to make a video that MEN care about, visit "biltema" "k-rauta" "verkkokauppa" ….shops you dont find in touristplaces.

cheers with beers from the finnish countryside 2 hrs away from the lunatics.

  16. 54:40

the letter Å does nort make an A-sound guys.

you have to fucking learn that one day.

If you spell a scifiseries "STARGÅTE" then it sound like stargOte to nordic people, and you will be exposed as idiots.

Dont know a letter? learn it or avoid it 🙂

    Vo(å)rt land (our land)

dank u vel, groetjes uit zuid fin
