DMV: Sketchy Roads – Long Neck Village – Michelin Thai Food – British YouTuber
Hey what’s up this is Joe this video is going to take you down some crazy mountain roads to the long neck Village in Northwest Thailand trying some meand guide featured Thai food and meeting up to do an interview with the British YouTuber living in shangai oh
Dude I’m afraid to even stand on this that freaking thing is totally washed out and got a little bit of a waterfall coming off of it now all right so I’m headed to a restaurant that is uh pretty famous it’s uh been featured in the michen guide I tried to get in yesterday
But the line was like out the door around the block this is a uh coconut curry noodle soup that’s famous in Northern Thailand uh and it’s also eaten in some other places in Southeast Asia cheers that is excellent good flavor good spice coconut really comes through the
Curry add 50 bot came out to uh just a little over a dollar I got to be honest there’s a lot of really really awesome food around here whatever criteria the be Land guide uses to feature and designate some of these places is it’s kind of Beyond me because there’s just
So many places that are just uh absolutely amazing just as soon as I’d returned the last rental scooter I began looking for another this was a record year for tourists so the pickings were limited to the exact same model as I’d had before the ball crushing Yamaha aox
155 there’s more history in this part of the world than you can shake a stick at but suffice to say the thick City walls and moat surrounding the city center date back to the late 12th century during the reign of King mang Rai in actuality there’s a whole lot
More to the story of this region which is beyond the scope of this video it reads like a Shakespearean play filled to no end with stories of betrayal treachery and Untold bloodshed all right so I’m headed across town to do an interview with this uh British bloke that I met the other day
Got a significant amount of uh more subscribers than I do so uh it was very nice and uh suggesting to do an interview uh up to this point I’ve really struggled to sort of find an audience for a lot of my stuff particularly the international stuff
Because I think a lot of people know me more for living off the back of a motorcycle in the US camping in the woods that kind of thing and certainly that’s something I’m very pass about but uh my other passion in life is learning other languages traveling to exotic
Places trying new foods and uh things like that and so uh what tends to happen when I go to a lot of these places is uh uh my viewership drops off because the reality is that a lot of my subscribers are just not as interested in this kind
Of stuff but to me the things are not mutually exclusive I’m essentially over here I’m doing the same thing uh for the most part that uh that I do back home so I’m hoping by uh doing an interview with this guy I can get uh maybe some more of
The people that are interested in this kind of international travel uh type of stuff that I really enjoy doing I mean it’s it’s really one of my true passions in life and uh I wish more people were into it hey yeah this is a bit of our ride out
Here man I haven’t been out to this part of uh the city ni all right so we just did uh kind of a cool interview uh you’re from England originally right yes yeah and you’ve been doing your YouTube channel for how long too long six seven
Years too long yeah okay and he’s got some very interesting content about uh sort of the digital Nomad life living in Thailand and uh and things like that so uh uh what’s the name of your channel Brett Dev Brett dev be sure to give him a
Follow and uh I’ll post the link to the interview that he did uh down here coming soon all right back at her brother just got this uh that’s a Yamaha a rock uh 155 so I’m headed north of shangai to this place called mym which is uh famously
Has uh one of these villages is uh with the women that keep the uh the Hoops uh in their neck to sort of like elongate their neck anyway it’s about an hour away from here so let’s go check it out This is just their freaking Landscaping outside of this coffee shop pretty incredible I had some company coming over to help me explore the long neck Village so I rented a barebones room in the jungle nearby hey Okay you s oh yeah okay okay all right so you may have seen like in National Geographic uh pictures of these women that put these like gold hoops on their neck it basically stretches their neck out it turns out that Village is uh like 15 minutes away
So uh we’re going to go get something to eat and then check it out to be quite honest I’ve been less than impressed with the caloy at the mland featured place I wanted to give the dish an honest try since we were in the region so we went to a humble unassuming
Kitchen where there was no line or Fanfare to speak of this is more cow soy bit cow soy as good if not better than the cow soy that I had uh Beachland star uh place and the portions are a lot bigger too and this is something uh she
Recommended and this has got some kind of chicken okay whatever that is pork blood all kinds of delicious looking I don’t even know what the hell this is honestly you had to have a tie person introduce you to a dish like this I tastes like uh maybe some jellyfish couple of obscure uh
Ingredients from the sea that I have no idea what they are right here right from the start I had an uneasy feeling about this place okay it’s worth pointing out that this tribe is actually native to the neighboring country of Myanmar from which they fled in the 1980s to avoid a bloody Civil
War the brass Hoops are a method of slowly elongating the neck a sign of beauty in their culture and also serve a practical function of protecting the neck in the event of a tiger attack ah very nice so this is the coolest thing in the world because they’ve made these little
Wooden knickknacks that sound exactly like the animal that they represent you do like that it’s like a frog sound wow you take Mr Cow over here and blow into his backside [Laughter] and and then that one yeah okay how’s that one go you try there’s a little duck B no
T so this is cool uh don’t get me wrong but for me there’s a feeling of uh being a little bit of an intruder kind of uh in somebody else’s house maybe uh I feel a little uncomfortable with it but the tourism and everything else kind of keeps these people going there’s some
Kind of a chicken or something digging for grubs all right well that was cool but a little too rich for my blood so um if you know anything about me you know I like curvy mountain roads and it looks like there’s some of those right over
There so let’s go check it out as I mentioned I’d had an uneasy feeling ever since we arrived at the Village after researching the matter further I was shocked to find out that the long neck tribe are not the ones receiving the bulk of the income from the entrance
Fees and are reportedly being exploited by an outside entity a number of human rights groups have compared the attraction to a human Zoo if you plan on visiting I’d strongly recommend stocking up on their handiwork which benefits the individual directly for some cheap entertainment we then headed into the mountains around mym an
Area known for its large population of wild elephants oh elepants the road began to seriously get sketchy as we ventured further and further away from the tourist Zone and I could feel my companion Clinging On to me for dear life after we made a left turn things started to really get interesting
Ah getting groovy groy baby groovy okay so when we go downhill Lean Back downhill this way lean back okay you understand okay no Oh oh it’s okay oh dude dude that’s a crazy route I’m afraid to even stand on this to be honest well doesn’t look that bad but uh as you can see that freaking thing is totally washed out and got a little bit of a waterfall coming off of it now
Interesting all right now just trying to figure out where the hell we are obviously this has been uh crazy messed up road but uh we got to a fork and um I’m really not sure whether I should go left or right W he back right boy this is cool Before long we’ve made it right back to where we started here we rested up and headed to the market when the sun went down oh wow okay n prick that’s amazing All right she just bought a bunch of foods from northern Thailand this is something what’s the name of this NN NN absolutely fantastic crushed up chilies mixed with garlic and some other kind of plant that I don’t know what she’s doing right there that’s like a groundup sesame seed and pepper kind
Of a deal that is good so you take a little piece of this uh sticky rice that’s really good rice and then mix a little bit of this this St is awesome man that is just Happ the next morning my Thai companion and I said our goodbyes and I headed back to
Shangai I was uh sitting in my room up there on the fourth floor all of a sudden I heard this loud boom like explosion and a flash I’m like what in the world was that and I’m looking around I don’t see anything and then I come over and she’s like doing like CPR
On this squirrel uh trying to you know resuscitate it but I think it’s I think it’s pretty well toasted and uh somebody might be eating squirrel [Laughter] tonight so if you’re a squirrel don’t climb on the power lines the traffic patterns in Thailand are in marked contrast to those of
Vietnam where virtually everyone is on a scooter here cars and SUVs make up the bulk of the traffic with the two wheelers weaving a path to the front of the line This is a vanelli motorcycle I’ve been seeing a few of these around I’m dying to give this thing a test [Applause] ride I don’t know where you go about renting one of these all the motorcycle places I’ve been talking to were sold out or asking absolutely uh exorbitant Rates all right so this is Thai green curry it’s got coconut milk basil leaves this has uh quickly become a favorite dish of mine this one is absolutely out of sight it’s got a a licorice flavor in there that I I think uh might be Ana seed or
Something like that just kind of gives you sort of an unexpected uh little extra flavor in there the sauce is Rich meaty not too spicy and went the extra mile and put these like fried onions on top of it and so it’s just absolutely great you know it makes you wonder why a
Place like that isn’t in the michang guide that was in my mind just uh a perfect example of a place that takes traditional Thai cooking and then just takes it a step further just kicks it up several notches uh to where it’s actually fine dining so and all that for about3 or4 doll
My time in Thailand was now drawing to a close but there were still a couple of things I wanted to see specifically to personally witnessed the sport of tie boxing as I was soon to find out the experience of seeing it here was unlike anything I could have ever

In this video, I try a Michelin Guide featured restaurant, meet with a British YouTuber, and ride to the Long Neck Village, a controversial attraction in NW Thailand. After that, a head down some sketchy mountain roads with a cute Thai companion and weave my way back into the city.

Good stuff Joe hey it it wasn't for you people like myself would probably never see other worlds your time and effort are greatly appreciated. Ohh it's in the teens here in Concord Virginia
Your videos are interesting on mutiple levels Joe. I for one, would fall into the group of folks that just love freedom. What I take away most is how you demonstrate the art of traveling gracefully. I've done my share of roaming and I've found that how a person presents themselves to the people around them is so key. Simple things like eye contact and the inflection in one's voice. You seem to have mastered this. Good on ya mate!!
Excellent work, Sir!
