A Tale Of Two Cats – Shooting In Frankfurt

So we just met uh heading to Dunkirk been shooting a little bit on the Fuji and uh trying to get some shots as we left um which work as stock as I said last night transport shots actually sell really well so I’ve been shooting off the gimbal um the shutter button problem

When I’m taking photographs does actually seem to be a problem and not something I’ve badly set in the menu um so this is going to have to go back uh when I get back to the UK to Fuji or I’ll go back to the camera shop where I

Bought it um for the moment I can use the touchscreen to trigger photos and it has a dedicated record button for video um and as I’m shooting predominantly video that’s not a major issue but uh it is uh kind of annoying that you spend so

Much money on a vit and uh it fails at the the worst moment but uh that’s life another thing that failed as well was the um little adapter I have the microphone adapter for my action osmo but fortunately these actually record directly to the uh the unit themselves

So I can actually uh uh back up directly on this uh Wireless goto recorder and um download in the evenings bit of an extra step of work but it it’ll be a good work around so um I’m not going to be doing much filming once they get off we’ll be

Driving down to I’ll be driving down to Frankfurt and I’ll catch you then So very good uh evening from Frankfurt um I arrived about an hour ago quite tired but uh it was actually a rather good drive down and uh managed to get the Jag a bit of a freshing on the auto although uh I bottled it at around 130 mph

Significantly slower than some of the Germans were going in their m5s and Porsches and stuff but so 130 was about good enough for me for a few seconds and then I backed it back down but that said 80 90 100 milph seems fairly average on the on the auto bars in Germany the

Germans are good drivers in general and they uh they’re very observant they’re very good with their signals and their Lane discipline so 80 90 100 milph is is very comfortable to drive on those types of Roads uh this is my hotel it’s uh quite nice actually um because it’s

Frankfurt it’s a business City hotels are a little bit cheaper in August because obviously a lot of people have gone away on holiday so there’s not so much business going on as such so I’ve got this really lovely hotel with breakfast for less than 50 a night um which is

Ideal so uh as you can see on the bed I’m uploading some of the footage that I shot this morning from the ferry uh and the Gimbal and I’ll upload that today and probably have an early night if I’m honest so uh I will catch you all tomorrow so very good morning from

Frankfurt um as you can see the weather is uh not exactly great for photography or video shooting um it seems that Britain’s not the only place place that’s having a dreadful summer uh the forecast at least for the next two days is um showers and rain and it’s not

Particularly warm at the moment 15 degrees in August in Frankfurt is um very surprising I think it’s probably the best way to describe it anyway I might go out with the G the camera and the gimbal to the um business district of uh Frankfurt um known as main Hatten

Um because of the the sky scrapers there uh and its closeness to the river Maine which is the main river runs through um Frankfurt um we’ll see how the weather goes um if it plays ball I might be able to just sort of skip in and out of

Showers and do some video from the gimbal an update on my uh Fuji camera shutter problem uh it really is a shutter problem the shutter seems to have failed um annoying uh especially when you’re on a shoot I didn’t bring a backup camera because you just didn’t

Think I would need it um but anyway the point is that I can still shoot video the video record pord button Works absolutely fine and I can also add a push use the touch screen on the back of the Fuji to fire the shutter if I want

To take ste’s images annoying but we’ll have to work around that and when I get back I’ll send the camera back to Fuji it’s still under guarantee so uh we’ll just see how long it takes them to get it repaired anyway I’m going to keep an eye

On the weather and see how it goes and if there’s a break in the weather I’m going to go out and do some video stock shooting I’ll catch you in the city Hopefully so good morning from the center of Frankfurt I’m in oen plats which is the opera house and uh at the end of the uh Financial District uh I didn’t realize today was actually the Frankfurt Marathon so the area around the fountain in front of the Opera House has been

Cordoned off for the marathon runners but you know that’s an extra addition um I can only sell stock of them as editorial because there’s quite strict uh privacy laws in Germany regarding showing people’s faces and stuff like that but um you know as an editorial uh

Footage it may well work um highlight of the day is uh I’m currently shooting under the cover of the arches of the Opera House a guy saw me working with the Gimbal and decided to walk straight in front of the camera he looked me in the eye he walked straight in front of

The camera stood about 2 to 3 m in front front of me and then put up a bright orange umbrella he then turned around and looked at me so I knew that it was quite deliberate I’ve no idea why people do that it doesn’t happen often though it does actually happen it’s really

Annoying so I will actually be submitting stop of him uh in the hope that somebody on YouTube has a fetish for orange umbrellas or perhaps a hatred of orange umbrellas so we’ll see how that goes anyway I’m going to wait for this rain and drizzle to stop and then

I’m going to walk on down through the uh Financial District and do some filming of the buildings There [Applause] So very good evening from uh Frankfurt as you can see behind me the weather has f finally broken a little bit uh some nice light it’s still quite cool and a little bit windy uh but I’m just doing some gimbal shots along the uh the river

Main here and just over this way to my left is the skyline of uh Frankfurt otherwise known as main Hatten and uh this bridge behind me is where I’m going to shoot from um it’s uh it’s quite a well-known Viewpoint of the city for the

Skyline and I’m going to go up there and take probably some somewhat cliched photos and definitely some uh video as the sun goes down and the lights go on in the city so uh I’ll catch you Later Going This E So very good afternoon from the banks of the river Main in Frankfurt uh the sun has finally come out and I’ve been shooting for the last couple of hours uh shooting video stock from the gimbal um I started over in the city center in the

Old town which is I think I’ve said it’s not actually very old it was rebuilt uh couple of decades ago um then I wandered down to the uh Waterfront of the river main on the other side of this River um and the sun started to come out so I got

The gimbal out and started shooting uh as much as I could really and uh so far it’s been quite productive I’ve done a whole battery and I’m about to run out of an SD card and uh generally that’s enough for one shoot because you have to

Manage it all as well and uh so I’ll go back upload it back back it up and uh rename it and then be prepared for the next shoot to put all the other stuff on Charge the gimbal I’ve been using is the um DJI Ronin mini and it’s it’s a really good gimbal actually I’ve been very impressed with it it’s very small yet it will take uh my Fuji xh2 and a decent Siz lens on as well um the only lens

Obviously wouldn’t take is the 100 to 400 but there’s no gimbal that would take that anyway I’m very very pleased with it I have a ronin SC at our home in Odessa which I think time is going to bring back but to be quite honest it’s a

Couple of generations older and I don’t think it has any advantage over the Ronin mini now so uh I’ll probably sell that when I get back to the UK if uh Tanya can bring it out with her anyway this is my last four day in Frankfurt I

Will probably come back to this location tonight um to shoot the skyline again uh the weather looks like it’s going to hold so fingers crossed for that I’m going to go back now upload all this and then uh get my suitcase packed ready for tomorrow I’ve got about a 3-hour drive

Down to nurburg a place I’ve actually wanted to visit for a long time for its history incredibly photogenic City Center so there should be some good stuff to shoot there and I’ll be there for about 3 days I think then I’ll will head up to Dresden probably just an

Overnight in Dresden I’ve shot it before the Drone before Germany had some pretty uh restrictive drone rules put put in place um and then I will head over to cow in Poland the journey has been changed slightly um bureaucracy in Ukraine has meant that we’ve had to

Extend our uh holiday trip adventure a little bit um Tanya will now be entering the EU probably in Slovakia um crossing over from usar Rod on the 19th so I’ll be driving to to Slovakia which um will actually be a new country for me um having been to roughly 150 countries in

The world it’s very very rare that I get the uh the opportunity to go to a new one so really looking forward to a new country take on another one off the list and of course really looking forward to seeing Tanya and our special guest hopefully she’ll be able to come anyway

I will catch you later and uh have a good day

Many of you that follow me will know that we had to leave our home in Odesa, Ukraine in February 2022. Unfortunately we had to leave someone behind, our cat Kiki.
You can read about leaving Ukraine here. https://www.jasonrowphotography.co.uk/blog/escaping-a-war-whats-next

In this video I leave the UK and reach Frankfurt where I spend several days shooting stock video in the city. Meanwhile in Ukraine, bureaucracy strikes and we have to quickly change our plans. The upshot is I will get to visit a new country

After 18 months of a nomadic lifestyle in the UK, we were finally setttled enough to be able to go and get her. Cue an epic journey across Europe with my wife flying to Moldova and taking a bus to Odesa and me driving from our home in North East England to the Ukrainian border. This video series is the story of my journey across Europe and the near constant changes we needed to make to the trip.
It’s a little different from my normal photography videos, it’s certainly much more personal. There is however, plenty of photography along the way, stopping in some beautiful and interesting locations.

If you are a long time follower you will know that I have fallen in love with the North East of England and have spent much of the last year documenting it photographically. You can find some of my images here. All images are available as prints up to poster sizes, fulfilled by my partner photo laboratory in Newcastle.
