In Europe, is photography better at sunrise or sunset?
I get asked a lot whether I prefer to take pictures at sunrise or sunset. And, the answer is usually sunrise. Especially when I’m shooting travel photography in Europe I prefer sunrise. The whole sunrise vs. sunset battle is almost a bit silly though. Because, in photography, the direction of the sunlight makes a big difference. So, in some cases, the direction of the sun’s position at sunrise and sunset will determine whether a place is going to be good for photography.
However, in Europe, there’s a whole other factor when shooting travel photography: people. And, if you’ve ever spent time in Europe – especially the busy tourism destinations – you’ll know that it can be really busy at sunset. Hence why I prefer shooting my travel photography in Europe for sunrise or dawn rather than at sunset or dusk. It’s just easier with fewer people and less traffic.
In this episode of the travel photography vlog, I wake up really early in the city of Cologne, Germany to take some pictures. The goal is to photograph one of the iconic views of the city at sunrise. I only had time to shoot this one location, and the light wasn’t great, but it was still a fun shoot. And, I had it all to myself.
Afterwards, the vlog takes me to the town of Freiburg, down in the south of Germany. I’ll be down in that area, and the black forest, for about 5 days shooting travel photography and exploring.
Looking for an insight into life as a travel photographer? Well, this is a great example of a typical day in my life.
Tomorrow, the Europe vlogs continue as I head out to shoot some images in Freiburg.
