“FRENCH VILLAGE WALKS” – VAREN and AN ABANDONED CHATEAU
Ver is a fortified village with a small but interesting historic Center in the Tarn and gon Department of the midi Pyrenees Region the Fortified Village of Ven suffered greatly during the wars of religion between 1573 and 1582 more than 200 residents died in the wars which was a great deal for a fairly small village things are rather more peaceful here Today the most important historic Monument in Veron is its attractive Chateau The Chateau de doen which was built in the 15th century it is now home to the Marie its round Tower acted as a lookout to spot enemy troops approaching the Town Across the Square from the castle is an attractive Fountain which has supplied veren with water for Centuries next to the castle is the large Stone entrance gate to the town on which you can see the battlements which stick out above the Gateway way these were added to the original Gateway in 1621 in order to strengthen its defensive role and missiles could be dropped through the holes onto anyone
Trying to force an entrance through the Gate The Church of St Pierre in Varan dates back to the 10th century and was originally part of the Town defenses one wall of the church being built in the walls that that defended the Town The church has a very attractive interior with tall narrow arches and interesting side chapels and on the outside its three-story Bell Tower joins the castle and entrance Tower in dominating the veren Skyline the church is one of the few churches whose entrance and bell tower face the East rather than the West veren is on the edge of the river Aaron and the Mand of Val sits right on the river making it a lovely position to stop for lunch or you can bring a picnic
And sit by the River About 5 minutes away we noticed an old chatau hidden amongst the overgrown trees we decided to investigate Corone Castle located in the commune of paraso owes its reputation less to its architecture than to the Lavalette family which it is associated With the most illustrious representative Jean de laet pariso born at labro Castle became Grandmaster of the order of the St John of Jerusalem on August 21st 1557 and distinguished himself by defending Malta against the Turks in 1565 With this he founded the city of Lavalette and died there shortly after in 1568 the Lavalette cornos Branch was formed at the end of the 15th century its members exercised functions important in the state and the church some served during the Italian Wars or the wars of religion now they’re just ignoring me
The building occupies the end of a plateau located at the Confluence of the SE and the Fon peros stream from where it dominates the ancient Hamlet of coroso established at the junction of the two Valleys the entrance structure and the South wing of the house with its spiral staircase and probably the Southwest Tower date from the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century the rest of the house was built during the fourth quarter of the 16th century the out buildings date from the
End of the 16th century or the first quarter of the 17th Century the South wing was partioned and fitted out at the end of the 19th Century a door reused in the house comes from The Chateau de pesh of Hil in Baron the building consists of semicircular Barrel vaults covered with a teras roof also the dwelling is covered with slate the entrance structure is covered in stone the research on this property was very hard to find it is privately owned and you cannot visit it but you can see it
From the outside and it’s worth seeing yeah
