It’s very frustrating as a Westerner watching Western countries fumble around, second guessing strategies that have been working in East and Southeast Asia in containing the COVID-19 virus. This week it seems they are finally coming around accepting that wearing masks in public can help contain the virus. On April 3rd the Center For Disease Control finally recommended Americans should wear cloth masks when going to the supermarket, pharmacy, and other public places. There’s so much more that could be adopted from countries like Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam. Some leaders say it’s a war but they certainly aren’t acting or taking the same kind of war-like measures that are needed in order to contain the COVID-19 virus. Refusing or delaying lockdowns and shutting down public places, the uninspiring leadership that still has a public acting like there”s nothing seriously wrong is all contributing to a situation out of control. And yet there’s information and strategies out there right now that could help slow down the spread of the virus. As a Westerner seeing how countries are dealing with the situation here in East and Southeast Asia, with far less resources, compared with the West is very frustrating and to be quite frank, I’m ashamed. Let’s hope this small crack, the recommendation to wear cloth masks in public, in the face of disaster, is the start of a turnaround.
