Christmas in Germany’s Hidden GEM ~ Regensburg! 🇧🇪 (2023)
We’re Rory and April we are the greatest Gapers sitting alongside the danu river Regensburg is the fourth largest city in the state of Bavaria from its foundation as an imperial Roman River Fort the city has been the political economic and cultural center of the surrounding region the first settlements in the Regensburg area date from the Stone Age
The medieval center of the city was made a UNESCO world heritage site in 2006 due to its well-preserved architecture being the biggest medieval city of North of the Alps and the city’s historical importance during the Holy Roman Empire the stone bridge built between 1135 and 1146 was used by the Knights of the
Second and third Crusades to cross the danu on their way to the Holy Land This Bridge opened major international trade routes in Europe and began the city’s golden age for wealthy trading families Regensburg has a vast history and is now home to several notable colleges and Industrial companies contributing to the city’s current
Wealth Cheers Cheers this is our last video for this adventure our last town that we are visiting on this 14-month journey through Europe we are in Regensburg Germany so trying to find a place in Germany was a little challenging everything is really really expensive and we only had two weeks
We’re not doing a full month so we were going between Munich and nurg and we landed on Regensburg yeah so we were kind of looking for a smaller Village in Germany you notice that Quint Central German towns that we could see the Christmas markets and some German Bavarian
Architecture and so we settled on little Regensburg on the danu and it turned out to be a perfect location for us as with many other cool coincidences on our trip we had yet another another one we randomly pick Regensburg and then a huge snowstorm comes through southern Germany
And shut down a lot of the trains and flights out of Munich where we originally were going to go but Regensburg thankfully being so north of the Alps we were able to avoid that storm and continue on our journey now the train ride from Vienna to Regensburg was actually really easy it really
Wasn’t a challenge until we arrived in Regensburg and when you come up the stairs we went to the right towards the mall instead of going to the left to the train station yeah with all our bags like dragging them through the mall and everybody’s like where are you all going
They were staring at us pretty hard and we were just wandering around like like tours not knowing where we were yeah so we asked a guy near the elevator like where to go going in the back and he told us maybe go back to the train
Station and go to the other side that’s where you’ll catch a taxi and then of course it’s pouring down rain when we get to the train station on way out and no taxi will grab us our luggage or our dog and now we’re starting to get really
Wet and it’s dark and getting cold so we start walking it’s supposed to be I don’t know 10 12 minutes according to google seemed more like 15 20 25 over the Cobblestone Road raining with all of our gear you know we have it was and we’re we’re pretty
Exhausted from this 14 month journey and ready to go home anyway and I was tired and so I kind I think I did kind of lose it on Rory on the way there because he couldn’t quite earned it navigate the map in the cold and the rain and the
Dark um but we made it there should have put her in a taxi and me and all of her walked but which we did on the way back to the bus station yeah we finally get to our Airbnb after this terrible walk on these cobblestones and the host that
Owned it met us there he was very sweet he could tell we were very flustered and frustrated but he checked us in it was really cozy little bit cluttered for my taste but it was homey and it had everything we needed I did not take a
Video video of it um but it did what we needed it to do for a couple weeks the first night we were there after the rain it immediately started snowing which was kind of cool it was nice to see this the town in the snow with it falling everywhere yeah the Christmas markets
And the architecture of Germany covered in a fresh blanket of snow it was actually really magical yeah Oliver had a great time running around the big fluffy snow until it turned into slush so despite all the snow and the slush and the mud and the cold very very cold
I mean it got down in the 20s at one point it was so cold that you could sip your glute Vine at a Christmas Market for about 10 minutes and then you couldn’t fill your fingers anymore we actually went to a really great shop that had all these beautiful products
Handmade in Italy and got new gloves that were lined still fingers would go numb but despite all of that Regensburg had great shopping it was really weird we needed a couple of items and they had a great little Boutique selection of really great handmade goods from around Europe um the Christmas markets were
Totally amazing I mean just everything you hear about German Christmas markets Regensburg I mean really just sold us on it did not disappoint yeah beautiful markets and they were on every single Plaza through the little city so we really enjoyed It the German Gothic Cathedral is a magnificent centerpiece in Regensburg it was founded in the 13th century and completed in 1634 there are two chapels there that predate the cathedral one of which dates back to the 8th Century the official choir at St Peter’s Cathedral is the famous regensburger Dum spaton or what
They call the cathedral sparrows it is a famous Boy Choir that dates back to 975 ad it consists of boys and young men in and they perform at mass and in concert and have made significant International tours and Recordings They located right around the corner from this Cathedral is the Adler apoe it is one of the oldest pharmacies in Regensburg and was founded in 1610 um I went in there just with my bewildered head cold State needing some drugs um just to realize where I was at
The apoy definitely a historical place here in Regensburg and it’s really neat with like the Vintage Apothecary bottles and the original interior it was it’s a really cool place and the ladies were really sweet there they wanted to take care of but we let them know that we
Were flying in just like two days and of course they did everything they could pulled everything off the shelves that they were allowed to give us and gave us great options to help her for the flight we always seem to find great places to eat we found this little cafe called
Kaminsky’s Cafe um there was another little burger place called the Hemingway and the baloa which I got some delicious pizza from all great places with yummy food of course these places took cash got to remember have your Euros on you but they were so yummy and I’m glad we
We bumped into these places yeah lots of great eating choices there in Regensburg as small as it was so right around the corner from our apartment was the abbey church of St Imam it was built in the 13th century and it’s an example of some of the romanes silica style churches here in
Germany in 1809 the nearby buildings were actually converted into a palace for the prince of thern in Texas so this was a family of German nobility that actually played a key role in postal services of all things in Europe during the 16th century we happen to have the
Pleasure of touring the monastery while a Men’s Choir was in there practicing for their Christmas Canata All so we absolutely love the beautiful little village of breinburg it was so rich with history and places to shop and eat and walk around and enjoy the Christmas markets however it was time to head to Frankfurt because we are headed home to the states for the holidays yep
So we’re off to Frankfurt decided to spend two nights at a hotel just so we could relax and just enjoy a couple couple days before we travel and make sure all of our ducks were in a row to head home yeah and when we’re talking
About ducks in a row we started a few months earlier to get our kennel because of course when we land in Italy we got rid of our huge 700 series kennel because it’s too big to travel around can’t travel with that kennel so we ordered a new one from
Grin they are a pet relocation company in Germany and they actually have a location right there at the Frankfurt airport so we order another kennel and when we say right there it took me almost an hour to walk there oh but only because there was only one bus that went
To that side of the airport it’s actually huge it was like a two mile walk anyway long story short I got this kennel I get there and the guy’s like it’s already put together he says hey how are you getting this back to the hotel I was like oh I’m staying at the
Airport no big deal he goes how are you getting this back to the hotel so I said I’ll just catch a cab and he looked he goes this isn’t No No One’s Gonna Take it again I didn’t know they had already put it together so they were nice enough
To give me a ride in their in their truck back to the hotel with our huge kennel on the way back to the hotel the guy tells me hey do you have your uh paperwork I’m like oh yeah I got my EU passport good to go we had already done
The research with the CDC and getting alliv back to America he says no no you have to have a health certificate so of course I start panicking I’m texting April and so now I’m panicking I just gotten out of the shower I’m getting dressed to just relax at the hotel for
The day and I now breaking out and H and sweating and freaking out that we have one day to get to a vet to get a health certificate and so Rory gets back to the airport I take a deep breath while she’s still screaming and panicking and I’m
I’m not really sure what to do because the vet opens at 4 and we’re leaving the next day so I walked down to the Lanza uh customer service customer service where they do the heavy cargo or the heavy luggage I save what was going on show all the information have the pet
Passport in my hand and he looks at me and says that’s all you need just be there at 7:00 a.m. in the morning earlier than we had planned on being there so I was like be great so so he texts me and says everything’s fine he
Gets up to the hotel room he’s like okay we don’t need it Lanza says all we need is the EU pet passport and we all breathe a sigh of relief okay he’s good to go so of course we relax we go have a nice dinner even brought all of her up
There it was just it was great really relaxing for all of us get up early early next morning feed him go walk him all before 6 o’ before April wakes up and we you know start heading towards the the counter check in at seven like we were
Told and then well Domino start falling oh yeah so the customer service rep at the cargo counter starts looking at olly and his kennel is like oh no he doesn’t fit in there I’m like uh yeah he does this is the same 700 series kennel that
He came here in on this Airline here at Lanza she like no he doesn’t fit I’m going to have to call somebody so she calls over another lady they make him get out get back in the kennel and she’s telling us as well he doesn’t fit in
Here you’re probably going to have to get him on the plane you’ll get on the plane and then you’ll both have to deboard and at your expense you’re going to have to Cargo him and get another flight home I’m like freaking out again like you’ve got to be kidding me we came
Over here in this 700 series kennel on this Lu tonza flight they’re like well we’re going to call our director so so in one eternity later they call this director he comes in in about two seconds flat he has Oli out of the kennel back in the kennel he’s like
Yep good to go he walks off and we’re like bewildered like that’s it is that it I mean we gave her some flight information that she wanted about yes bringing him over way back in October of 22 Yeah so she confirmed that yes he was on Lanza in this kennel and they ended
Up saying it was fine so we we come away like trying to catch our breath and trying to avoid olly seeing us in his kennel as he’s being carded away down the terminal to go and relax at our gate and and try to breathe praying that
We’re going to get on this flight so we’re at the gate we saw Oliver get on the plane everything seems to be working out just the way like it always does April puts her ticket on the little machine goes green she walks in I’m just right behind her smiling having a good
Time put my ticket down beeps red must be mistake put it down beeps red now I only start panicking because I have a little problem we get through airports I always get strip searched so he was exmilitary just so you know and yeah he was always flagged getting on several flights since I’ve
Known him so a guy comes over he goes try it one more time now I’m starting to sweat because I’m like I’m gonna take off my pants again so I pull my ticket down it goes red I’m like oh here we go I good out of the line and really long
Story short what had happened was is that Oliver’s pet passport was tied to Rory’s passport and his boarding pass so they were expecting two dogs on that flight only one of those dogs showed up we know it was ours because we just watched him being loaded on the tarmac
Into the plane because he’s got an air tag on him and we followed him on our phones as he came down the tarmac and then watched him physically get on the plane so I’m trying to tell the lady no he’s on it we watched him we watched him
Get on the plane and anyway they just had to confirm that he was on our flight sure enough he was on our flight and Rory got on the plane kept my pants on and everybody boarded April took her Xanax we took a little nap had dinner and finally arrived 14 hours later back
