LAUTERBRUNNEN – THE REAL VILLAGE OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS – A TRUE PARADISE ON EARTH
Lauterbrunnen is nestled in one of the most impressive valleys in the Alps, between gigantic rock walls and high peaks. With its 72 roaring waterfalls, secluded valleys, flower-filled mountain pastures and secluded mountain hotels, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of Switzerland’s most important nature reserves.
“Lauter Brunnen” – the name of the village alone already evokes the singularity of this landscape: the Lauterbrunnen valley has 72 waterfalls. The most emblematic is the Staubbach waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe, which flows from a rock wall almost 300 meters high. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited the valley in 1779, was inspired by these roaring waters to compose his famous poem “Gesang der Geister über den Wassern”.
In the heart of the “Schwarzer Mönch” mountain, hidden behind impressive rock walls, the Trümmelbach waterfall offers an equally grandiose natural spectacle. Nearly 20,000 liters of water per second flow down ten waterfalls of glacial origin totaling a height of around 200 meters. You can only see this spectacle in summer, by taking an elevator in the tunnel.
The village of Lauterbrunnen (795 m) is the starting point for the most famous tourist destinations in the Jungfrau region. A rack railway connects Lauterbrunnen with the Wengen sun terrace on the eastern side of the Lauterbrunnen valley and with Kleine Scheidegg, where you change trains to climb the Jungfraujoch.
On the other side is Mürren, a holiday resort accessible from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. Departing from Stechelberg, the cable car takes you to the summit of the Schilthorn, at an altitude of 2971m, famous for having served as the setting for the filming of a classic from the James Bond 007 series: “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.
Lauterbrunnen has a population as of December 31, 2010 of 2,558 inhabitants. In 2007, 19.2% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the past 10 years, the population has decreased at a rate of -14.3%. In 2000, most of the population spoke German (85.2%), with Portuguese being the most common (4.9%) and Serbo-Croatian the third (2.0%).
