I visited the ugliest part of Germany
I visited the ugliest part of Germany also known as Roar we all know beauty is subjective objective subjective and so we are going to be looking at six different cities in this region to determine are they really as bad as everybody says they are and are they worth
Visiting the first city we’re going to look at is deburg the third biggest city in ruot deburg is not a city people often visit or talk much about when visiting Germany but I got lucky because I went on a beautifully Sunny Sunday and it made it much better however all the
Stores were closed and not a lot of people were on the street the main reason I went here is to see the land shaft Park dorg Nord these industrial areas are a big part of rural history and Heritage and from my understanding it is the main reason why rot is
Considered ugly let me explain from 19th century onwards this region was the heart of the industrial boom in Germany due to its natural deposits of Iron and Steel therefore giving a lot of people jobs in the numerous coal chemical steel and iron production companies because of that this region was very vital before
During and after the wars the world wars and so it was a big Target for bombing and therefore a lot of factories and cities were destroyed to quickly provide housing after the war much of the construction was basic and functional and quick reconstruction was more important than Aesthetics so now many of
The mines and steel factories of this region have transformed into museums parks and even playgrounds and if there’s any history nerds out there that know more about this topic than me feel free to leave your knowledge in the comments just like any other old German City deberg used to have beautiful
Buildings from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance but because a lot of it was destroyed and they had to rebuild and restore the city a lot of the historical buildings are gone or they just don’t look as impressive but I managed to get plenty of beautiful looking scenes at
Least I think I did so and one of my favorite locations was the deburg Inner Harbor it was very peaceful and the Sun was shining just right I had a nice little walk I was also planning on visiting the Crazy Stairs but they were closed on Sundays and the train was
Under maintenance so it just didn’t go that far so I gave up the most crowded place on Sunday was the deburg McDonald’s at the train station it took quite a while for them to make my food but but uh you know I’m not complaining I get it it’s stressful next city on our
List is uh Ober Housen Germans that live in or near oberhausen know it for having one of the biggest shopping malls in Europe based on Google the biggest shopping mall in Europe is currently in Istanbul nonetheless this one is still quite big like really big I got lost a
Couple of times they have for me a never seen before Harbo store and free bathrooms like you don’t have to pay to pee I’m not being sarcastic in many malls I’ve been in you had to pay also I was visiting before Christmas so apparently they built their Christmas
Markets right next to the shopping mall so that means that this mall is pretty popular in oberhausen which was uh an interesting Discovery the train station next to the mall looks quite spiky and not far from here they had an industrial Museum you know because of because of
The past the actual City Center of oberhausen was small and quite boring except for this district court and uh this cute dog however because of some blogs online I found this place a bridge that looks like that toy sausage dog from Toy Story it looks pretty cool I
Mean I’ve never seen a bridge like this and it’s so long it’s located in a park which I would walk around in if it wasn’t raining and if I wasn’t already tired and wanted to go home next up we have Essen which if you translate it
From German means food or eating so it’s quite confusing when you Google this word and I believe this is is the biggest city in rabit well firstly the train station Essen was pretty cool I mean they had this really colorful wall and then I had to take a tram in this
Really moody looking station I was pleasantly surprised to me Essen holds a special place in my memories specifically the to UNESCO world heritage set it is a formal Coal Mine which was established in 1847 now it’s a cultural and industrial complex with museums exhibitions restaurants and event venues because of my University
One of the first big projects involved coming here filming and creating a trailer for this place so if you ever wondered why my first public video on YouTube is some weird ass trailer from Roar that’s why and I decided to keep it there so coming back here was a bit
Nerve-wracking for some reason but it ended up being a peaceful experience walking inside enjoying the nature and the red metal is free of charge but if you want to visit the museum you have to pay not a lot but I just didn’t feel like it than that the city center of
Essence seemed more exciting and interesting than deburg and since it was Saturday I think there were quite some people I didn’t have many plans I saw a couple of cool buildings like these old churches these pigeons and this cool looking Bridge thing and I also went to
The shopping mall which was pretty big and it had a lot of Floors Plus a train station I think or or more like a path leading into the train station quite efficient plus I also stumbled up on a Christmas Park a little bit for Christmas they go all out with a giant
Ferris wheel animal lights and plenty of booths where you can get food and booze Merry Christmas many people made fun of my pronunciation of the city on Tik Tok and uh well I guess that’s fair I didn’t really I I still don’t really know how to pronounce it the city is translated
To wopa Valley so that that means that this place has Hills after being greeted by Soviet looking buildings these silver lions and one of the biggest Prim marks I have ever seen I of course had to take a ride with the most known transport here which
Is the Shon a train that has tracks on top instead of below it was way smaller than I imagined and a bit more scarier when you walk in the whole thing just swings a little bit but the view is pretty cool but my first stop was the
Botanical Garden since I was there in the beginning of December there’s not many plants around to observe but it was very nice nonetheless not that many people and the sun again was uh doing its job I was enjoying my time anyone visiting this region knowing the history
Of the Smoky coal chimneys will be surprised to see how green Roar is today in all small cities and big cities there are small parks and big parks most of them I think are outside the city center and also there are big parks in some cities ities that you have to pay to
Visit I mean to be honest it makes sense because you have to maintain the park so it looks nice I mean they are really big parks like look at these pictures they look pretty cool but there’s probably not that much to do in the winter after
The garden though I also saw the Lego Bridge it’s um smaller than I imagined and also in the middle of nowhere kind of I wouldn’t really recommend coming here to see the bridge I was very surprised by how many stunning buildings I saw I mean there not that many of them
And most of them are next to the road so I mean I’m mainly showing the highlights don’t get me wrong there’s a lot of places that don’t look that great there’s a lot of places that look like uh me the city center was small but Lively many shops cool looking Church
You know the usual and of course a shopping mall not as big as an Essen but it was all right Dortmund the second biggest city in root I visited DM a couple of times already mainly to do some shopping do I actually buy something when I go shopping most of the
Times not but I still like looking at stuff Dortmund is known for the uut tower a football team so the city also has a football Museum and flying rhinos there are many of them spread out through the city from what I have found these rhinos started spreading in the
Early 2000s many of them were bought by sponsors and painted by them so some of them are just a big ad some do look cute this city is a city streets full of people there’s many shops restaurants bakeries and nice looking graffiti or wall art and the center has a couple of
Good-looking buildings or at least interesting ones but nothing groundbreaking or breathtaking but the area around the U Tower is pretty cool I like how it looks minimalistic and these red things they look pretty cool there are lots of modern style buildings that look more simple and practical rather
Than glamorous and detail child and now I’m going to take the train to go home speaking of trains getting around town or more specifically getting around this region is quite straight forward they have trams they have buses and they have trains that connect to the big cities or
The small cities or small towns but oh my God is it annoying how often the trains are late I’ve taken so many trains to visit these places and it would be a miracle if the two trains that I’m taking there and back would be actually on time and it’s even worse
When you need to actually take two trains cuz if the first one is late then you’ll most likely not make it to the second one but the ab still thinks that you’re taking that train even though the transfer is minus 5 minutes from my understanding Germany has a great
Railway system however at some point they just stopped investing money into the infrastructure and now we’re suffering the consequences so many of my friends and family members are shocked when I tell them about German trains because Germans are known for punctuality and it’s just not true when
It comes to their trains I think also that’s why a lot of people prefer having a car so if if you find yourself outside a city center you most likely stumble upon many cars and the road anyways my rant aside the last City we’re visiting is Hagan you might be thinking Hagan
Really not bom why why Hagan there was no other reason I visited this place other than it took me only one train to get there instead of two Hogan is uh really nothing special I’m sorry people living in haogen at least the city center I mean I made the best out of it
They had a cute Cafe a shopping mall with a giant egg in the middle and so many pigeons a scary amount of pigeons but to be honest that was my highlight of the city pigeons generally there’s more stuff to do in halan like uh visiting the open air museum or some
Kind of Park but it’s further away from the city and I just didn’t feel like it okay don’t judge me please my many final thoughts so if we’re talking about the architecture these cities do not excel at it since a lot of the architecture that we consider
Beautiful and detailed and has a lot of historical meaning is not there anymore because of the things that happened in the past so a lot of the cities are more modern they have buildings that serve their purpose of course there are some buildings that are more you know trying
Something new a few buildings that I saw were reconstructed and they don’t have the same feel to them why do I focus so much on architecture is because it personally brings me joy to see a building that’s old and looks really cool and impressive but if the environment wasn’t as important for a
Person then probably in Sims 2 they wouldn’t have a little environment bar so I think environment plays a big role in our lives the bigger cities like Essen and Dortmund seem more lively and busy full of people doing something and going somewhere me visiting these cities
Doesn’t really reflect on how it is to actually live there however I did read many forums from foreigners and from Germans saying that if you want to live in this area they would probably recommend you going to Cologne or to dorf because it’s more fun and there’s
Much more going on and probably more International people if you’re looking for that the housing and living in Roar is much cheaper than living in Cologne dorf and even Berlin and Hamburg so that’s a big plus and stereotypically and not so stereotypically I would say people from this region are more
Straightforward and more practical and less snobbish and fancy I suppose but again this is my observation you might have a different opinion uh let me know if you do visiting the smaller cities like haen and the other one made me feel like people living there come from socially underprivileged and socially
Vulnerable backgrounds the streets were a bit more littered the buildings seem like they need maintenance and people seemed a bit less happy but maybe it was just the weather I’m not sure as a tourist should you be visiting these places I would say no I mean if you’re
Looking for a vacation destination and you haven’t even been to Germany before these are not the most desired cities to visit this probably won’t be the first thing on your list and it should stay there but if you live near this area you’re looking for a weekend activity and you like industrial Aesthetics
Why not there are quite some places I didn’t manage to visit either because of timing purposes or because of the deutche bond and they do look pretty cool firstly all these metal shaped thingies that are in the middle of seemingly nowhere I feel like you can
Get some cool pictures out of that those giant parks that I mentioned before I mean you have to pay but they seem quite cool especially during the summertime or spring there are still some typical German Timber houses out there and if you want to take a look at them
You can nobody’s stopping you in general I would recommend visiting in spring or summer maybe beginning of autumn unless you want to see the Christmas markets I mean they really go all out during Christmas markets like in Dortmund and Essen and deburg as well plus you can
Visit cologne and dorf cuz they’re close by their Christmas markets are really Christmasy plus I linked two articles that covered this place pretty positively and they also have great recommendations of what to see and I read an article talking about some other things but their description fits quite
Well here is that the city Rose From the Ashes which is a different perspective to look at it thank you so much for watching this video I hope you’re having fun with whatever you’re doing now unless unless it’s something bad welcome to all the new uh subscribers if you’re watching you
Know what’s up how are you so yeah that’s that’s about it um bye-bye I know what you’re thinking you’re thinking Erica looks a little bit different doesn’t she well thank you for noticing because I have a new camera it looks pretty epic I think I think it
Looks quite nice I didn’t film all of this video with this camera but I’ve been wanting a camera for like 4 years and I finally have good reason and enough money to buy it so I’m feeling pretty good you know I’m going somewhere I hope I don’t know we’ll see
I visited the ugliest part of Germany so you don’t have to. Or should you?

Named after the Ruhr river , this is Germany’s most densely populated region, at least some websites say that.
Formerly Germany’s coal-mining region. Now this region has changed significantly after all that happened. The new Ruhr region is considered a model for the transformation of industrial landscapes or they say.
I’m not an expert and I don’t know everything, so if you know more about something I dont, feel free to let me know :))

hello
I'm so early, the video actually shows "No views". What an achievement.
early crew
Wuppertal is actually not part of the Ruhrgebiet. It´s part of the „Bergisches Land“.
Your voice is soothing.
Love your videos. Beautiful country. Have been there once, had a great time.
Talking about ugly german cities and not going to Berlin ://
We still love the Germany slander tho
sincerely, an Austrian :>
Thanks for making a travel vlog to a place I won't likely visit 😅
nice new hair cut, you look like Haibara Ai!
I was in Duisburg at around the same time, I remember those exact christmas markets being closed 😅
I was also pleasantly surprised by the inner harbor!
I think most ruhr cities did a good job renovating the industrial areas, I believe they deserve better than to be called the ugly part of germany even if they lost their historical buildings.
Though the fact that I like the 1900s industrial style probably affects my opinion quite a bit.
sad person from Bochum here 🙁
As a proud resident of Bochum, I was hoping you would visit my city. But we got skipped 🙁
the random metal thingies up on hills in the middle of nowhere are usually on artificial hills, Halden, made from all the earth we dug out of the ground here. If we had a proper earthquake the whole region would be a dozen meters lower afterwards. Same if we stopped pumping the water out of the now empty tunnels and caverns below
UND DAS RUHRGEBIET BIN ICH!
