Athens Walking Tour to Philopappos Hill | Greece 2024
Hey what’s going on I’m here in Athens I’ve actually been here all week the time flew by it’s been a great experience we’re off tomorrow on a boat to go check out more of the beautiful country of Greece been working remotely doing a little bit of exploration as
Well and in this 16° weather like it was today it’s been perfect supposedly it’s winter but coming from Eastern European winter where we just were before freezing cold this feels like summer figured it was a good chance to take a little walk around the neighborhood we can talk about a few different things
Including the viability of long-term travel airbnbs and an alternative to the Creator business model I had a few thoughts to share about that we’re just getting all packed up so it’s a bit messy but this was the makeshift workstation for this week let’s go take a Walk the first thing you notice in the city is there’s lots of graffiti actually noticed that in Belgrade when I was there in October to November and I thought wow there’s so much graffiti here but when you come to Athens you realize there’s a lot more
Here it’s the most graffiti I’ve seen in a city probably see a little bit on this walk um the other thing you notice are these orange trees that line all the streets apparently they’re not edible they like the sour oranges but used for decoration pretty cool yeah here’s an
Example graffiti but the other thing you notice you come here there’s just such positive energy everyone’s smiling everyone’s happy I noticed a big change in atmosphere and Vibe the second I stepped off the plane here’s a better view of the oranges we’re staying in a local neighborhood that’s one of the things I
Like about staying in airbnbs long term you to live like a local you’re not traveling so much like a tourist and the other thing I like about here versus hungry it was dark at 4:15 here it doesn’t get dark until 5:30 or so the sun sets so you have an extra hour of
Daylight you can see up this way the hill up there there’s a beautiful view of the Acropolis Acropolis is like a 10-minute walk from here you can go check out the cafes down this way yeah I think a lot of people don’t realize how coste efficient it is to be
A long-term traveler when you switch out of vacation mindset or tourist mindset and you start traveling one month at a time the costs become a lot more reasonable yeah I think most people are surprised when they hear how much it costs especially if you’re coming from a
Big city in North America and you’re paying rent or mortgage I guess for less than what you pay you can travel to a bunch of countries around the world all included for your stays the other thing I’ve noticed here too there are not that many tourists when you walked around um Budapest for
Example there were tourists everywhere when you walk when you walk around these neighborhoods it’s like a 5 10 minute walk to the Acropolis I don’t see any tourists or hardly any I should say all locals but when you go to the Acropolis obviously that’s where all the tourists are here has
A very social Community communal Vibe any time of day you can walk around on the streets and you see locals drinking beers at 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. much like it expect in Italy France Spain it’s Saturday today so the cafes are all packed here’s another another
One also the other thing I noticed here there are so many cafes there are so many cafes and coffee shops tried a new coffee called uh cappuccino Fredo I believe it’s from here I’m not sure if it’s originated in Italy but it’s like a froth milk it was
A cold espresso coffee with really frothy milk on top it’s pretty good the food here is fantastic as well I’m a big fan of Greek food obviously I think most people are there’s so many good foods uh but the portions you get in the restaurants the amazing service has been
Great ordered a like a suaki platter the portion was a lot bigger than I thought could only eat half of it and the waiter came back and offered a free dessert or he offered a dessert I said oh no I’m so I’m so full um there’s no way I could eat that
But he insisted he brought it back it was all free this really really fresh Greek yogurt with honey super nice dish and then when you’re all done they don’t even have the option to tip amazing service no expectation of a tip apparently locals will leave a little tip but it’s not
Obligatory something I like is I think tipping culture in North America has gten out of control going be hard to cross here we’ll take a walk up the hill toward where we can get a view he’ll stop for us we can get a view of the
Acropolis I don’t know how far up we’ll go so we have to hike up quite far far to get a view but we’ll see pass over to this Side so if you’re considering long-term travel don’t let the costs put you off because often times it’s just starting to be a little bit creative if you’re already uh making money I think the one barrier when I talk to people that holds them back the most is maybe not the
Financial ability to pay for travels it’s the location Independence Factor so they’re making decent money but they’re in a physical they’re in a job where they have to go every day to the office the key I think is just to figure out how to make a little bit of money
Find a path that’s working and then you can quit your job and put more time into it and that will help it grow more that’s the path that I took so obviously if something is proven all it usually takes is more input so the more time you can put into it the
Better and you have the bonus that now you free up your location and it actually can be advantageous to relocate to somewhere where the cost of living is lower was talking to a friend new friend he was a site visitor we ended up connecting but yeah he’s
Paying almost $3,000 in rent in a big city in North America and now he’s finally making the move he has some savings and now he has a promising business that started up they gave him the confidence to break his lease and start traveling and as a bonus he’s
Moving to somewhere where the cost of living is a lot lower so just gives you more Runway actually can be an advantage for a lot of people to start traveling long term especially while building a business I think the thing that gets in most people’s way if you’ve never traveled before is the
Distractions see all the orange streets here as I’m walking so you you you’ve never traveled before you go to a new place and you know you’re supposed to be working but you feel like you have to take advantage you’re in this new place you have to go
See everything and if you can overcome that and stay in the right mindset which is building Builder’s mindset you defer that a little bit that’s where you win I think a lot of people go wrong and they yeah they just start exploring and Go full Nomad and they neglect the work that’s the
Mistake cuz that comes later I find even just working from different locations and cafes and Vibes and the walk you take when you walk to your walk to the cafe in your neighborhood the vibe is different and that that alone is enough to put you in a state of Discovery
Curiosity so for me I’ve I thrive in this type of environment someone told me tomorrow I have to pick the location and one house where I’m going to live for the rest of my life I would struggle to do it right now I’m just loving having the ability
To change things up every so often so with a lifestyle of long-term travel you have that flexibility and that’s really what I like and when I think about business models it’s the same way a lot of advice is to Niche down and to pick one Niche and it’s hard
For me to imagine doing that just the same way in the same way that I couldn’t imagine choosing just one place to live I could imagine choosing two or three home bases alternating between them it’s already what I’m building towards have my home base and my residency in in
Panama now but I still travel for a lot of the year but that could change at any time and that’s the beauty of it I might scale up the time that I spend in Panama especially when I’m doing uh in a real building phase or Sprint I find that
Some level of stability is helpful but doing one month stays with the option to extend for me I always find I can get into a a great work work mindset super focused get a good routine going just mix up my work location few times a week in a cafe and I’m good to
Go it’s a great place to go hiking right up here there’s lots of stuff to see once you’re up at the top let’s go this way so in terms of that advice when you’re told Niche down I think that puts a lot of stress on people I think in my experience there’s
No need to overthink that I think that Niche steers a sorry that advice steers a lot of people wrong because they hear it and they think okay I need to decide I’m the ex guy and then they start acting like an authority even though they haven’t earned it and it becomes this weird
Thing because it’s like why is this guy Tweeting or posting with such Authority when it’s obvious there’s no results to show and it it just becomes weird I think being authentic and being honest about where you are in your journey is always going to be better
And I think instead of just deciding in like you know I’m the sales guy when you’ve never experienced sales or whatever I’m the ghost riter guy when you’ve never had a ghost riter client I think it’s better just to be authentic talk about what you enjoy build up a
Network figure out what you like especially if you’re young figure out what your interests are what your passions are keep talking about those things and with time discover you know the three or four interests that you have versus trying to Niche down and just choosing one and then start to
Think about what’s what’s a unifying theme start to connect the dots what’s a unifying theme for all of my varied interests and when you do it that way you’re creating more of a platform that serves you especially if you have the mindset like me where you find it hard
To commit to just one path you might consider yourself more of a polymath Wanderer mindset I guess in terms of business this is a dead end I guess we’ll have to go this way if you can discover that I think it comes with time and it comes naturally I
Think a lot of decisions are forced and it comes across in people’s content they’re trying to be authorities too too quickly when they haven’t earned it and it’s obvious to people so if you’re feeling stuck I just wanted to to share that like you don’t have to I think a
Lot of people have been sold on this idea that it’s a really good idea it’s the only opportunity to become a Creator and in my experience the reality is it’s very hard to do and very hard to monetize you see these success stories but if you look at the people that do
End up blowing up really quickly they’re all talking about growth or they’re all talking about sales it’s it’s a lot more a lot less common that somebody in another Niche just blows up with their content so just keep that in mind we’ve been sold a dream that I
Don’t think is is viable for the majority of people but what I do see as more viable if you’re hitting a dead end and you’re not seeing progress because I think it’s really important to see momentum to keep you motivated if you don’t see even hints of
What you’re doing um to to be working it’s very hard to continue for anyone I’m not talking about just like a group of your friends who are commenting on each other’s posts it’s like real people who are discovering your content your messaging and they’re reaching out
To you saying you know thank you or those DMS you get that motivate you to take the next step to keep going those are the ones I’m talking about if you’re not getting those I say keep going I think if you have a dream and
You want to pursue that I think that’s a great thing but instead of just trying to create a Ser a coaching service which I think is the other common advice oh just set up a coaching service or Consulting most people are not going to sell a coaching
Offer in my opinion it’s a lot harder to do than people think depending of course like what your Niche is I think the better route to go is to think of a business where you’re one you’re one of the people in the target market so for me I was learning a
Language and I set up a language learning company for the language that I was learning and that ended up taking me on a four-year creative Journey that blew it up to multiple languages and multiple locations and a big evolution in terms of the tech might get a nice sunset here let’s
Cut up see what’s up this [Applause] way and I always am a big fan when you’re choosing a business name something that implies a benefit think um I don’t want to give away any of my friends businesses in case they don’t want me talking about them um but for
Example one of my friends started a supplement company one of my first friends who had success in the online business space they started up a supplement company and the name of the supplement implied the benefit that the supplement would give you think energy for example another one that everyone might
Be familiar with if you were around in the early 2000s there like 7 Minute Abs or whatever implies a benefit right right in the name of it how could you instead of trying to create a creater business where you’re selling people coaching or things that it’s really difficult to
Sell what type of service could you come up with that is not just tied to your name what what is a service or a website you could set up and even better oh there we go we got a view of the Acropolis and even better if that
Passion checks off those two boxes kind of been rambling about one it serves a need that you have or you’re a member of the target market and two it’s a theme that kind of ties together all of your interests so for example my language learning company tied together a few of my interests
Which are psychology and language learning you can probably do much better and come up with a theme that ties together all the things you like cuz if you’ve read um what is it Austin Cleon I really like his book he has two steel like an artist
And his other one that I’m not going to remember the name of but he has really good Vice in that book it’s like talk about the things you’re passionate about and then all the people who like those things will also be attracted to you and your content and what you’re creating because they’re
Passionate about those things too it’s like if you’re a fan of I don’t know 80s punk rock that’s very Niche right you start talking about that in your content and people who like that are like whoa this content is for me and they might not expect it say
You’re talking about um you’re talking about sales or some topic like that that just immediately sets you apart and if you can tie that to some type of service that implies a benefit as well I’m starting to I’m starting to ramble about this topic because it’s something I’m
Passionate about I see a lot of people that uh perhaps are going in the wrong direction or have been sold a dream that it’s very hard to achieve and I just want to share a few of the things that have worked for me as we take in this beautiful view up
There yeah we’re looking at piece of History up there pretty sure don’t quote me on the exact year but somewhere around 4:30 ad was when construction that right there was finished so we’re talking way back in time the cool thing about this city as you walk around too you just get little
Glimpses back in time you’re walking down the street and then there’s like a little cemented off square with ruins or or suddenly like an 11th century Orthodox Church lot of famous thinkers from history came from this part of the world but yeah anyway just something to think about something that’s been top of
Mind for me recently as well because I have friends that now are wanting to they’re realizing that yeah they’re not as happy as they could be living back in North America and they’re looking for other options and some of them have jobs some of them have their own businesses but
They require physical presence like they’re doing um trades or teaching related businesses Etc and looking for different options so I’ve been thinking about this as well as well as as me thinking about what my next business idea would be when I’m ready to start up something new so something to think
About it’s never been easier to start a business but the key is choosing the right one and not trying to sell something that someone has sold you on because it makes them money to do so by you paying for their inflated coures and I don’t know when I see some of
These testimonials and you know those people firsthand who are in the testimonials and you know that they’ve said something much different about how much they make you realize how much is ex is exaggerated in the space to sell you a dream because it benefits the person who’s teaching you that and it makes
Me very reluctant I don’t know to be associated with with with the space that’s all beautiful view super quiet up here it’s even one level up but yeah some last day thoughts here I’m getting ready to head out of Athens I’ve been stayed on a what I consider like a
Around the World trip right now before I head back to Panama have a little more St stability where I’ll be in pure building mode not that I am not now still working I would say 8 hours a day with time to explore in the day but getting lots of work
Done for the company I’m working with and always thinking about what my next project will be Tak in one last view from this side it’s awesome you can see in the far distance over there the ocean that’s where we’ll be headed tomorrow feeling super grateful for this
Lifestyle the ability to live in such beautiful places and just a reminder that it’s a lot cheaper than you think I think a lot of people see people living a lifestyle abroad and figure oh they must be multi-millionaires you can live I think Tim Ferris presented this idea really
