Welcome to my first trip to Europe and Israel!
The year was 1971 and many young people in our generation were heading for Europe.
Either on a summer hiatus, a gap year or just because.
My boyfriend Bobby and I bought a book called “Europe On 5 Dollars A Day” and we thought that was too expensive. Ha Ha Ha if only you could do that in 2024!
So we worked and saved money to go on our big adventure.
I was 18 years old! I mention this because in the photos you will see I look a lot younger. And thinner.
Is it time to say: “If only I knew then what I know now?”
I put this new video together with photos that are 50 years old and were saved in a special album. I took photos of the photos and tried to edit them as best as possible.
When you’re working with a 50-year-old photo that wasn’t that great in the first place, all the editing in the world can’t fix something that is out of focus or has other issues. But you can’t go back in time, and I am grateful to have any photos at all of this experience.
I have been back to Europe three times since this first trip. But it was before I had an iPhone or a camera, so what happened in Europe then stays in Europe.
I have so many incredible stories and memories from each trip and each one was different.
From the first trip, where I earned extra money for us from “Busking” which is basically singing in the streets or the subway (Tube/Metro), to the last trip where I worked as an Au Pair for a physician in Majorca.
I really wish I had those photos! But I am grateful for the memories.
The other photos from the trip were taken upon arrival in England and travel from London to Salcombe, Devon County in the south of England. We stayed at the home where Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote the classic “Crossing The Bar.”
And then onto Paris. Mais Ouis! Je souhaite revenir à Paris, mais j’ai plus de 5 Dollars$ par jour à dépenser! Beaucoup plus!!!
(I want to return to Paris, but have more than five dollars a day to spend! A lot more!!!)
Last was the crazy fourth class trip on a ship from Marseille, France to Haifa, Israel.
You haven’t lived until you have been trapped in the bottom of a ship for 6 days with livestock and nuns.
Because it was late November in Paris and freezing cold, we wanted to go somewhere warm.
Bobby had relatives in Israel, and his brother had just worked on a Kibbutz in Mizra, so we were set. Ready to pick grapefruit and dates!
One of the many highlights in The Holy Land was living in an abandoned Bedouin village in the Sinai desert. We were visited by a couple of the returning Bedouins on camels who saw me and immediately offered my three “roommates” three camels in exchange for me.
Now we heard that usually only one camel is offered for three women so I suppose this was a compliment.
And because I am still here, you can assume that my companions did not accept the offer.
I don’t know how these things happened but they did.
Call it Beshert or fate or just the luck of the young and innocent.
