Journey through the fairy-tale, medieval Rothenburg o. d. Tauber through the Röderturm to the Rathaus

    The Röderturm.
The original Röderturm, partially destroyed in 1945 by the effects of war, was a shell tower, i.e. open to the city center. Only later were all the towers in the city completely walled up. The upper part with its four corner cores resembled the Stöberleinsturm, so it was completely different from its present form.
The tower room was manned by changing guards. The main tower is the oldest part of the gate complex. It dates back to the 13th century, the half-timbered storey was added after the war. Two beautiful customs and guard houses covered with “pointed helmets” flank the front gate of the Röderturm. Behind them stretches the Zwinger. From its so-called “strike towers” it was even possible to fight off attackers who had already penetrated the Zwinger.
