Palais de Papes
Built by several Popes ruling in the14th century. Fortress-like palace occupied by 7 French Popes, 1309-1377.

Notre Dame des Doms
Primary cathedral of Avignon, established during French papacy.

Rocher des Doms,
Gardens & grounds surrounding Notre Dame des Doms,
Ville Neuve-les Avignon, across river, was built to counter-act strength of Avignon fortress,

Pont Saint-Benezet
Reconstruction of ancient bridge was abandoned after repeated destruction by floods. (Begun 1177) Made famous by a French children’s song.

Place du Palais
Broad plaza at foot of Palais de Papes. Contains Conservatoire de Musique, (previously a mint and ornamented with the arms of Cardinal Borghese), and
Musee du Petit-Palais, (formerly Episcopal offices).
