How NOT To Drive In FRANCE – YOU Decide Who Is RIGHT ? + Trelon Glassworks – Van Life – Pt 8
In this episode of our French trip we prove that van life is not all smiles and Instagram views we let you in on a disagreement caught on camera so stay with us as we’ll leave it up to you to decide who was right and who was wrong
And we’ll record the results right pull out now no no I can’t see until I can see you just pull out now yes till I can see and one of us is going to be disappointed oh and we also discover an interesting bit of industrial history in a quaint Glass
Museum welcome to the channel that’s Harry or camper van and that’s me Jane and here’s Stu and we love to share with you our vanli adventures right we got another night probably in France then we’re going to have a night in Belgium cuz we’re need to be in
Amsterdam to meet up with uh family today we’re going to continue to Head East to a place called veru mhine which is probably pronounced wrong and I apologize and as you can see it looks like we need to cut across a part of Belgium but we need to get our
Priorities right and beguet supplies are running low there you go how much was that um one โฌ110 the smell in the shop was just calories was not it calories by nostrils cheese that’s one off the list yeah need to find cheese now all right gr it must be a Ring Road mayy
Bu now as you can see this old guy is toodling along at around 25 mph and nothing was going to change that and as you can see it had solid white lines and we simply had to follow in procession it says with 3 minutes away from this
Supermarket I suspected might be a bit L than that the Romans marching may have overtaken him at this speed got some the pressure’s on he eventually turns off and our attention returns to unwanted van guests can’t see him no definitely none on this side oh yeah there must be a family
Under there if you keep killing them and then they keep the little one is not as pronounced web so can you see it I can see the web yeah how do you know it’s a little one say a fine web compared to the other one
Which you got a f a it’s probably a baby trying to survive in the world on its own nature well I’m fck he can live in France when I found him this is exactly the situation that I didn’t want to be in I’m out for I’m going to put me h no it’s
Definitely not so the policeman go on the the Poli can only go when you tell to everybody I’m not going to go yet everyone’s gone on that on that white line haven’t they a bit fresh you need to pull back cuz I can’t yet not giving me a vision like a a good
F to Vision can you can you pull back a bit then it’s not now than you need to pull back it’s can only go when you can tell yeah but I can’t see if you’re too close to him right pull out now no don’t fing I can’t see until I
Can see you just said pull out now yes till I can see pull out so I can see further you said pull out now so pull out now is pull out sorry you’re going have to say pull out it’s different then go all right you’re going to have to be
A bit more clear on that you’re going to have to oh it’s turning off you have to pull out so I can see whether you can if I haven’t got the vision what we know now pull out is let me see if I have a vision go is yes I
Have a vision am I supposed to know any of them well we know now don’t we we have had a driving situation I’m going to explain my side of it and then St will explain his side of it and as you can see from the video
And I prepared to admit I was wrong if public vote goes against me so first ly um Stew was following the vehicle that needed overtaking to far forward so I needed him to pull back number one so I could see if it was all right to pull
Out talking yourself no I’m just working out how to put it number one to pull out to assess the the situation out on the road of oncoming traffic which I didn’t know so there’s two steps there pull back from the vehicle pull out then a
Quick assess cuz I can then see down the road go or not but we didn’t get that far because all I said was pull out and pulled out Stew was light off and it I hadn’t even I’d only just looked that is my side of the story so
None of the explanation that Jan has just done was explained to me to communicate those different phases she never explained that to me Jane thinks it’s just just just tell them just say should okay and now right so none of that was explained to me so when you hear pull
Out that means for me pull out and overtake at no point did she say pull out only equals pull out and you might get your side swiped in fact you don’t do that you never you never do that you you have a look with your with your head
Well I couldn’t see with my head which is why I needed you to take the vehicle out at no hold on at no time would you ever just pull out pull out pull out I would you would you you no if you you could see if it pull back enough you
Could see but you didn’t pull back enough and I could so therefore pull out isn’t in that that maneuver step two doesn’t exist you pull back and then you can see and then you go perhaps overtake anyway I either way you never said overtake you just said pull out I took
That to me pull out and overtake so I pulled out and start to overtake to which you shink to me it’s common sense that there’s three steps to this one it’s okay to pull out to have a look that’s number one so then number two is pulling out your number three is then
Overtaken only in your common sense only in your head so answer a Jane if Jane’s right or B stew if Stew’s right and where does your allegiances lie but what we have learned now is that um I ain’t going to listen to you no we now know each other’s
Language and it wasn’t safe to overtake that’s why I had to go out and have a look and that was my Ultimate Nightmare being in the bloy driver’s seat without a steering wheel and there I was have you finished ranting Y and trying to justify a stupid position you
Said pull out sense I didn’t say I didn’t say pull out and then floor it did you did did you say pull out I just want to have a look then to me pull out is okay let’s pull pull out what’s the difference between pull out and pull out
Overt no I wouldn’t I wouldn’t just say pull out and overtake but pull out cuz I can’t actually see the road but that’s all right just pull out and overtake I wouldn’t say that I think you would I think you would anyway we’re still here despite our communication
Problems with the air now clear J goes off shopping and Google translate once again continues to have communication issues think we should give it a Miss well think we’re going to have um Curry tonight for a change so we’re just going to get some chicken curry sauce going to make it easy on
Ourselves it’s really warm today J’s a bit concerned that um our costs are running away with us but I don’t see how we spent that much but the food bill seems to be quite High quite sure why we’re living day to day so maybe that’s not the most efficient way
To do it we’re just you know buying what we want for the meal tonight that way the fridge isn’t overloaded um and we’re not worrying too much about the uh you know on the fridge side of things so but it’s been great I must admit I’ve relaxed quite a bit with respect to
Planning I’ve almost Switched Off from planning which is unlike me those people who know me will think I’m a different person um but I’m sort of thinking well it’s like now I’ve got a a plan of going to a museum in about 20 minutes and then after that we’ll find somewhere which is
A nice nice feeling it’s it’s sort of uh you know I’ve been retired redundant there for uh 15 months and my life has been about meticulous planning and projects and uh so it’s interesting how that habit has started to dis disappear which is good it’s good the
Less stress I get the best for Jane as well so finding France quite easy to drive around um and park up it’s definitely a society that they obviously like uh to have their camping which is great doesn’t look like that’s the same in all countries say it sounds like
Belgium and Netherlands are a bit more hotter on um clamping down while camping but I don’t know cuz you read online you can read anything you want online but there’s plenty of airs I think that’s the only thing so even if they are they looks like there’s plenty of airs about
That you can either pay a small amount or some of them are free so we’re just going to go up uh to um have one night in Belgium before we get to Amsterdam we have paid for a five night and the outskirts of outskirts of Amsterdam only because of convenience cuz we’re
Backwards and forwards seeing um Matt and Emily and Milo please consider consider clicking that subscribe button now as it’s free and drop us a comment as we always love to hear from you turn right now and then your destination is ahead we can’t quite get to the car park
That we wanted to go To clear oh is this it okay you need to take the one after it Then so in the end we decide to abandon Harry near the square in the center of trillon and after a quick look around we’re off on foot to find this Glass Museum oh god there a dog oh Jesus Christ I’m not walking back that way
As the car Parks empty Stu decides to go back and get Harry and he seems to have been so long I feel like he’ll have a story to tell when he gets here oh no assistant maybe no can hear or something it’s so quiet everywhere it’s ju been that long I’m just wondering
Whether I should walk back and try and find him he’s got a story look at his face something’s I knew something would have happened it has to it’s been so long in stress the something have took me I think I was you probably heard me I
Was at the back of it well I did keep putting the camera I put the camera on every time I heard a vehicle uh I past the entrance there because he took me down there and I was up I was getting I was up one way streight I’m to reverse
Round going over D tracks I was there bloody dirt tracks oh funny and as as you can see the majority of the factory buildings are still standing we’ve seen many similar models on our travels at historic sites and the attention to detail is quite a skill the
Site today is used more as an educational location with live demonstrations being carried out now unfortunately there was no English translation which is fine as Google translate became our friend as we made our way around and these are some of the the samples that they currently make in the Demonstrations The Apprentice here showed us him making two items the first one well was quite apt to be Honest We both love seeing real traditional skills being used but above all a younger generation wanting to learn Them Uh put in the color the second item involves Colors and it’s really interesting to see how he creates the Twist and then encases it in the clear Glass he’s effectively folding the clear glass around the colored twist to form a globe simply fascinating beautiful yeah lovely this is one of the the furnaces where the glass components would be heated up to around, 1300ยฐ for consistency molds were often used to create many of the items so this
Kil here was 1925 it was smokeless and they used to put compressed air around into the stations where obviously each worker would be working so he’s like semi-automatic a bit more production approach to to producing the glassware a reconstruction animation of the production line where the compressed air Lin’s coming
Down whereas here is the more older traditional furnace so having blown the glass bottles I used to do perfume uh bottles apparently they then transfer them it’s about 500ยฐ C and they put them into this oven here and this this would gradually cool down the pieces from 500 to room
Temperature cuz the glass needed to cool down very slowly back in the day the factory was a hive of activity producing at times high-end quality glassw for some really well-known Brands unfortunately the last production run was in 1977 and the owners at the time were apparently looking into moving into plastic molding but unfortunately they couldn’t face changing their long History it’s hot and we’re hungry so as ever Stu weaves his magic skills to find another great location for Lunch I you a pretty place this I know what I’m doing I’m a profession I like that you are no you are good at the old zooming in at Google I’ll give you that put the kle on then just taking instructions trying to I’ll do the kettle on the
Power to make himself feel better CH put those two together got new baget a mini mini that was actually a it was this size to begin good with and for why have you left the ends have you got something to go see bits and half a it
Wasn’t half no no no no that’s true that’s true a quarter of it a third you got your grapes you you might get the odd pip oh no you just got the odd one some don’t and we head off to our Parker for the night but the direct route is
Through Belgium we’ve literally just entered Belgium now I’m not sure what we were expecting when you go from one country Tre to another but simply nothing had Changed unfortunately Harry’s satinav has failed again where it simply gets lost with the GPS position and as you can see the arrow is not on the main road unfortunately simply resetting the Des dination does not sort it so a full factory reset is needed and we really
Wish we could understand why it keeps going wrong breathing thankfully we’re soon off again but we’re going the wrong direction this time so this shortcut takes us back on track although we all have to breathe In And we soon arrive at this chargeable air and we’ll see you in the next episode where we’ll show you around the park up as well as some of the local area before heading off into Belgium and onto the Netherlands oh oh oh woah wo wo W wo

The Public Jury Votes Latest below
Jane was Right – 35
Stew was Right – 23
We were Both Wrong – 21
A – Jane was right. Stu, if you'd been driving on the left side of the road; you'd have dropped back for a wider view, eased across the line a bit to verify, and then made the decision whether to overtake. You've just done that thousands of times, so that it all seems automatic now – until you were on the right side of the road, the driving function became separate from the viewing function, and you had to coordinate two sets of eyes & brains. That's not an easy thing to do; and practice (& forbearance) make perfect.
Come on Stew, Jane is always right! But this time both were wrong, you should have talked about the wording before now because you have to rely on your passenger. great video, many thanks for sharing ATB
The main thing is that youโre both alive after the drive and youโve both learned what to say and do as you adventure along. Iโm not sure I could drive on the right ๐ฌ๐ฌ
Have a chat and pre-agree what instructions mean just donโt use NO and GO for obvious reasons. For a safe overtake you hang back so that you have a good view down both sides of the vehicle in front. Police drivers are taught to move their vehicle to get a better look. Hanging well back makes this safer. When the overtake is on you move out and overtake ๐
Stew we are with you on this one. Sorry Jane. Jane's instructions weren't clear.
Loving the museums that you are showing us on this trip.
Jane its common sense you asked Stew to pull back because you needed more distance from the vehicle in front of you so that you could see further up the road for any oncoming traffic, maybe it needed saying several times until Stewart pulled back because he obviously didn't do what you had asked so maybe say the next time (creep out slowly so l can see before putting your foot down) would be a better choice of words to someone who should have known not to be that close to the vehicle in front and who nails every word you say to win a point when they cant admit they are wrong..Safe travels:)
I,m going 50 / 50 …. but perhaps EASE OUT would of been a better option, its all a learning curve๐ . A great vlog, the wild camping we find is the same all over europe. Please give some details of where you are staying near Amsterdam as we want to visit on our way up to Nordkapp.โค
H.
Firstly, another great vlog with much amusement derived by us ! The tiny little ambling car around 2.02 was possibly (difficult to tell from that view) a voiturette, or sans permis as the Frech often call them, (no licence required – tiny engine, very restricted speed) of which there are quite a lot in France. As no licence is required they enable people who have lost their licence , or those who don't have one of course, to get (back) onto the road in a limited way, in order to be able to maintain job/way of life etc.
Re: the err … discussion, let's call it, we both think answer C, because we feel that you both should have set the 'rules' for that situation at the start of the trip.
Pull out now means itโs good to go to me, sorry Jane. However Stew you should have understood that Jane was correct in saying if you hang back sheโll be able to see if itโs safe to overtake. A resounding 50:50 for me ๐
Your correct Jane, tell him to do one ๐๐
Well… That started a debate here! Jane 1 and Stew 1. Bernie was with you Jane and I was with you Stew. If Bernie had shouted "Pull out Now" I'd have taken it as an OK to pass, perhaps "pull out a bit" might have been clearer but, I'd have hated to make that decision too Jane. So All a misunderstanding. ๐ค๐๐ Update after further discussion just now it appears I misunderstood Bernie! He's with Stew. Sorry Jane. Honestly you guys. Keep smiling ๐
Stu you've got to realise Jane is always right ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Jane right she said to pull back & you didnโt. Sorry Stew. I was going to say C just so I can sit on the fence. Iโm a Liberian so I see both side. Canโt. Pull back. Lol. Cheers Lynne Victoria Australia ๐ฆ๐บ๐จ๐๐ป๐๐
Stew is right. Jane was right asking stew to pull back so she could see! And Jane should of said edge out a little bit so I can see past a bit. NOT shout with urgency PULL OUT NOW I would of pulled out they way Jane said it…. but not helpful to anyone getting cross with each other. That's not solving anything we find when we have been in France as the passenger mostly I have to be the eyes for the driver. Keep calm. And trust each other ๐๐
As the driver it is my resposability to decide if it is ok to overtake!! My wife as passenger merely advises if it is ok for me to pull out further so I can see and make the decision. So I'm with the missus!!
The predicament is stressful because the driver cant see opposing traffic, to pass, so
The passenger must give directions
You could find the answer is A, JANE or answer with both right to have pulled over, disected it and addressed the issues to have
Compromised and show just, both communicating and working together . Thats love above hate, angst can wait, anger is danger mate ๐
Jane was right, sorry Stew
Team Stew. I was wanting to vote for Jane beacause she is always right otherwise. But I can't. I interpreted "Pull back" as "Put distance between us and that truck so I can see down the road." After that and in context, I thought "Pull out" meant as "All clear. Now go and pass that truck." The idea of "Pull out" meaning, "Cross the center line so I can see" never occurred. Love your channel!
Sorry, but you were both wrong due to poor instruction and miss interpretation of the word 'now' โบ. The net zero taxes on food and greedy supermarkets that are government controlled make it very expensive to buy food in France.
Stew was absolutely right. Jane is wrong……
The driver was wrong
He was driving too close
I remember years ago, my girlfriend now wif shouted pull out now. Vert stressful couple of months.
Sorry Stuart, Jane was more right than you.
Jane right
The small car was probably an AXAM limited to 50kph which in France can be driven without a driving licence. I'm with Jane, she asked Stew to pull back several times, which had he have done, both of you could have had a better view of the road ahead and the ability to build speed speed up before fully pulling out so overtaking quicker. However "pull out" was not the best choice of words.
C
#1 you both should have communicated beforehand the strategy for over taking, hence the confusion.
#2 far too close to vehicle in front. The further back will allow a much longer view down the road.
Those Microcars are a PITA! As they are so slow. However, the French love them
Faults on you both but we are siding with Stew (sorry Jane).
Paused at 6:37. Jane was right. To be fair Stu shouldnโt have been so close behind the vehicle in front therefore allowing Stu or Jane to be able to see if it was clear to overtake. As a driver it is your responsibility. Saying โclearโ would signify it is safe to proceed but ultimately Stu should check to make sure it is clear to do so before manoeuvring #teamjane
B
Jane was right.
I think Jane was right as you were driving too close to the lorry blocking Janeโs view.An entertaining video, enjoyed the museum.
Sorry Stew but I'm with Jane. "Pull out" doesn't mean "Go / overtake" ๐ Just pull back from the vehicle in front so Jane, or even you, can see!
Should have just pulled over somewhere & had a cuppa! Still, great example of a situation which is probably more common than not, driving RHD in LHD rules! Cheers & thanks!
I donโt know what sat nav system Harry uses, but I find when one system goes loopy, I try another. Eg. I use my phone for navigation in Oz for work. My go to is the Apple map on my phone, & when that goes off I try Google maps. If thatโs no good I try Where is. Although, youโre very seasoned van lifers, so Iโm sure youโve got it sorted! ๐
Karl said straight away you were too close Stew, but he said Jane did say pull out so you pulled out. So he said you're both in the wrong.
I agree that Stew was too close for Jane to have decent visibility, but when Jane said pull out, she probably should have said "move out a bit cos I can't see shit!" ๐
So I think you're both in the wrong too, but then if Stew had been further back in the first place, maybe the whole thing woundn't have happened, which technically means Stew is at fault!
C. Both wrong for not agreeing on vocabulary. We use "edge out" and "good to go" no need for a drop back as I never drive close. Another good post though, enjoyed the glass factory and facts.
Well I said to Karl, where are all the tourists when you were at the glass place. He said they've crashed cos their wife told them to pull out ๐๐
That was a perfect spot for your dinner. Very nice.
Its a classic couples driving related miscommunication incident in France. Ive been there. And so has she! Your both wrong, and your both right ๐
A – you were too close stew
Spiders in the mirrors. Happens with Fiat as well.
Pull out can be interpreted two ways. Pull out to me (G) can be similar to go. Unless pre agreed. I would agree with Stew, except that he should have dropped back to make the view easier.
Great vlog again guys. ๐งโโ๏ธ๐๐๐
