Not in Charge (EP 55) Leg 3 Day 2 #Outremer #MiamiBoatShow
What’s your assessment do you think will make it to Miami in 10 10% 10% oh the wind’s picking up we have seven knots but right on the nose so literally we’re going this way and the wind is this way ah so if we had this that would be nice but it’s not the
Case so we’re slow we need wind to go fast but we’re not expecting win or much win or some but not for very long so I know all together Welcome to our all together passage series a daily Vlog taking you with us on our maiden voyage
From France to Miami we’re on leg three to Miami oh my God we’re so excited cuz we’re doing um 7.5 knots of boat speed up wi up wi and we have the sails up woohoo engines are off which is a beautiful sound of just water in the
Back and no engine what do you think Amy very happy so exciting the sales are so Beau beautiful and yeah it’s like relaxing when the engines go off yeah that’s sailing up wi finally beautiful Colors we have a beautiful sunrise gorgeous well we were able to sail um most the better part of yesterday which helped us conserve Fuel and now we’re motoring again we put the code 65 up but um we lost the wind of course about a half an hour after we put it
Up and that was in the middle of the night so then we took it back down all in the middle of the night and now we’re trying to get to the Dominican Republic uh the tip of it in order to get more gas and refuel um of course you have to make
Sure you get there before it closes cuz uh we arrive early evening so we’ll we have to uh when we hook up Starling to do the video we’ll have to make sure we contact them and find out and um you know the fuel gauges on these boats the the fuel kind of rocks
Around in the tanks and I didn’t write down exactly how many meters we took into the boat but we weren’t absolutely empty either so even if I had I don’t know if I would have an exact fuel calculation so we think we have enough to get there
With a little bit to spare but fingers crossed and um then we’ll make our way up on the northern part of the Dominican Republic to find a shelter and uh then we’ll at that point hope for better weather and that the low front passes through and uh quickly wow
Not so quick that it causes worse conditions but faster in terms of it clearing up and uh then we can be on our way back to uh our original plan and destination which is Miami beautiful morning it’s a good reminder that motoring can also be fun in terms of our fuel we have
170 on one and 150 L on the other or 180 see this is the problem with these gauges is there’s a big difference between 150 and 180 when you’re trying to get somewhere uh but they fluctuate quite a bit so it could be 170 L could be 200 l could be 160
L that’s the problem is the fluctuation in the gauges we’ve measured them on the physical tanks uh in terms of How High they are and we can calculate from there but the problem is we have 30 hours to go burning about 8 L an hour estimating we need 240
L and and based on rough calculations we have 240 l so the reason why Stefan and I make such a good couple is because I worry for both of us and then he checks my math what happened well 150 + 170 uh the American math says 220 the French French math says
320 so we went from not having enough fuel to get with both engines on to the Dominican Republic to refuel to having maybe like 15% left in the time by the time we get there so things are looking out just I love you for being an engineer and knowing
Math I’m a liberal arts student nobody likes motoring so I’m making some pancakes look how civilized yeah eating breakfast she Sunday morning yeah yeah we have Daniel doing dishes over here which I love I love a man that does dishes thank you thank you for breakfast the best food is food that
Other people cook yeah cool so our Cai is detecting the sarasam uh on the mass camera here here and we just went through a field of it it’s not too bad now and we see some flying fish and that’s about it How you feeling this morning Daniel I’m good I’m a little tired it’s a long night are you hopeful that we’ll make it I am hopeful that we will make it so I woke up this morning and um it was the longest I’ve slept in probably 3 days or so or maybe 2
Days um I slept 4 hours and I got up and I could not see anybody on the boat it was it was very eerie um I walked all over the boat and no one was a top I think Stefan had just run down for a second to um do something but I could
Not find anyone on the boat for a minute there and then uh Stefan arrived and I asked him how he was doing if he was tired and then I said are you sad and he said yes so even though we knew from the beginning that we probably couldn’t make
It to Miami we we had hope we still really hoped we could pull it off but now I think that we’re starting to realize that uh it’s probably not going to happen our hope is diminishing and so Spirits are a little bit low so how we doing there boss so
First I put my colorful outfit to bring Good Vibes are we doing what we’re murdering we sure are yeah so our plan right now um doing different routing um ignore the blue the the pink we are the Green Boat here we made the decision to go straight
Shot uh full on two engines on 1900 RPM to um this Marina right here where the Red Dot is we’re going to go in and out do a quick refuel so that’ll be tomorrow Sunday midday after we refuel we’re going to go around the Dominican Republic on the northern coast so we
Have two option to stop we’re probably going to stop at this Marina to again refuel that will be our last chance to refuel um the name of the game is to really go as West as possible but this is uh Haiti here uh and this little Bay doesn’t look
Like first we will arrive at night so that will not be safe and that doesn’t look like it’s just mangroves and doesn’t look like a great place so that’s kind of first part of that trip before the low pressure comes in ideally we wanted to make it with
Moonshot meet in Turks and Kos have cold drinks with J Mar um um but we’re a little late um so and the entrance to this Marina is all the way around the northwest side and we’re coming from the southeast so that doesn’t look like an
Option at all for us so that means we won’t have a good angle to leave so the second part of the trip as it is right now uh still a long way once we go from the northern shelter in Dominican Republic to Miami straight chot is 650 natico miles so it’s a long
Way uh the low pressure would have been spinning so there’ll be the C State won’t be too great but we’ll um we’ll wait it out Monday night Tuesday night best case scenario leave Wednesday end of day because in the Dominican Republic we find out that you check out
From 8 to 5 so either we leave at 5: or we leave the next day at 8 to still try to hope to make it on time we will have to leave at 5: on Wednesday but the C States will be pretty bad so we we don’t have to make
That decision right now but we’ll see and um so anyway first part trying to go as fast as we can good things is the marina first Marina will be able to get there during daylight the second one twoo will be able to get there during the light and
Then we’ll wait for weather updates and I’m not sure how we’re going to make it work our chances are probably just still 10 to 15% but we’re doing everything we can we if we were cruising we will work with the wind we have and sell and not
Motor and right now we’re just full on and so we’ve been motoring most of the time we’ve had a good session yesterday of sailing like pretty fast uh but we need that wind to gain on some time and uh there is literally there is this Big Blob and this blob is going to
Be around the Dominican Republic in Puerto Rico where we are and then the low pressure kind of wipes all this the Big Blob of no wind that’s the problem it’s like um it’s it’s like a dark blue collar on our screen and it’s just there there and then the low pressure with the
Dark red nothing in between so here’s on windy so we’re about where the little hand is here so where there is no wind I guess we’ll get a little bit of a breeze um as we go through the Mona passage here um so uh hopefully uh that will help us we’re
Going to stop here so by tomorrow so roughly tomorrow yeah we’ll get a little bit of breeze so that’s good we’ll start up there by Monday we hope to be here where there is no wind but that’s good because that wind is already that low pressure up
There we see the iso bars here so we can move on the northern coast because we’re protected but you see already that wind coming and then by Monday night let’s say Tuesday morning so if I look that’s um that will be like Turks
And Kos is in the middle of it if I zoom out that’s the low pressure here so we’re looking at the European model here but that’s a pretty big thing so we’ll be Sheltering here and at best like Wednesday so the SE state will be not good the wind not good right on
The nose but if we want to try to have a chance we have to leave on Wednesday and the problem is um yeah look at this like we could have had this weather with a high pressure Sing full speed go there but no they say never sail with a
Schedule that’s what we’re doing over 1,300 no Kil miles how pleasant the trip will be it looks sad um yeah because I know it’s amazing on one way that um from the time of impact act to now being under water the time is has been so quick but I cannot avoid thinking like
If we just had an ex Friday if we could have left like just one day earlier it will still be shitty and motoring but then we will get to Turks and Kos and then we will let this go by and then we will like have a better shot and uh to
Make it to um through the Bas and and through Miami but but um yeah we’re going to be further south and then we’ll be against I mean exactly need to go against the waves so you can’t let that go now I have a hard time and just like everybody works so
Hard and you kind of want to make it on time and at the same time you cannot change change the past and you cannot control the weather and the date and so we’re doing the best we can and it is what it is but it would have been a nice reward for everyone
Yeah so I know yeah I think the thing that’s tough is everybody worked really hard and you know the GLS guys in the Boatyard were amazing uh the oir team back in France was amazing um the people at Al compose the guys doing the repair work on the hall
And the finishing work they were all amazing and rallied our insurance broker um I don’t know what tricks he pulled to uh get us out of there but um he was amazing and that’s what’s kind of hard because so many people work so hard to get it
Done and to miss the window to be able to go into the Miami Boat Show that’s what we’re really talking about is when they pack the boats in they pack them in on on a schedule because they they sort of uh layer in the boats so people can
See them and so we have a very specific time we need to be in line to go in and if we miss that window the boat can’t get into to the boat show and uh so we’ll be at the show we will be anchored somewhere outside of the show uh we just won’t
Potentially be there so that’s kind of the bummer we’ll still be there though and uh we plan to be at the Blue Water seminar that oer is hosting that’s on Saturday so if you haven’t yet signed up to do that and you’re going to the boat
Show please check that out gave us a promo code a in 25 if you want to get a discount on that lots of really great information and it is a full day I think the topics that are being covered are extremely valuable if you’re a serious um if you’re serious about your
Project and doing some Blue Water cruising uh they shared the agenda with me and it looks really really valuable so check that out but yeah I think we’re all just feeling a little sting today and it’s it’s hard to shake it because we’re talking about you know if
We just had one extra day and that’s what’s hard but I made hummus and uh I’m making a nice meal and we fed everybody pancakes this morning so that’s the that’s my contribution to this and it’s beautiful I mean there are benefits to Flat Water I don’t know about Motoring
That’s not so much fun we’re looking for any kind of evidence of life besides ourselves we all dolphins any fish or jellyfish are welcome a

———————————————————————————————-
Hello! We are Holly and Stephane 🇺🇸🇫🇷
We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52. We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speedtest, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water. Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our YouTube vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us, which is why we don’t monetize our channel.

if you just use the routing software all the way to Miami what does the prediction show
The boat fix looks very good!
why not motor through the low or just 3rd reef/stay sail it? Your chance of making it would probably be 60%+. I know crew comfort might be compromised for a day or two. Its just going to suck.
Fingers crossed you guys make it! 🤞
Guys do the engines have fuel consumption readings? Can they tell you how much you have used? If not, then maybe it’s worthwhile adding inline fuel flow meters reporting on NMEA backbone? They are not very expensive. My little powerboat has one and it’s not perfectly accurate but runs within a few percent. Thanks again for sharing. I hope the weather helps you get there on time. Good luck, Bon voyage.
I'm surprised your fuel burn rate is so high. I guess you must need to run both engines to make up miles. That's a shame. Tuesday looks ugly, but Wednesday looks like a slay ride. I going to have a talk with the wind gods tonight on Awen's behalf. Sometimes they listen. Nil bastardum carborundum
Sooo, you'll be crossing the Mona Passage at night with no wind and no swell! A silver lining?
I watched the video from Nick on Moonshot. Quite a surprise to hear Jean-Marc dismiss routing/weather apps.
So I guess the biggest ‘hope’ is that the weather is not as bad as it looks and you can keep in the Lee of the islands( take you pick ) and keep moving , at least if there is wind and you reef down well you could travel safely even slowly it would be better that just hiding somewhere.
But you have to do what you are comfortable with.
Cheers Warren
If you're motoring, at your first stop – pick up some nitrous. Use judiciously.
We are out here cheering for you👏
If you could make it to Manzanillo Bay safely that would be best, get you an extra 50 miles west, but even the marina at Puerto Plata is pretty far west. Going out Wednesday night might be a little early, but I think you'll find that the waves will lay down pretty fast in the Old Bahama Channel – it's not really open ocean so much. We did this trip almost exactly a year ago, left Antigua Feb. 18 and did 6 days flat up the OBC to Miami on our Atlantic 57 cat. Don't know what your queue date is for the show, but with full fuel and at least 25-30 hours of fast sailing you should manage 8.5 knots average, yes? Get you in Saturday 10th.
This is all difficult but mostly for yourselves. We are all here to support you. Best of luck, wishing for safe travels and a push of wind. Take it easy and don’t fret, nothing you could do. This is out of your hands and at the hands of the wind gods.
⛵Miami Vice – In The Air Tonight 🎶
Just tracked you, looks like that low pressure might not come as far south as predicted which means u can just refuel and go
Prayers for a miracle change in weather but most of all your safety. I love coming to your channel for my positive boost for the day. Even at this time of seeming great disappointment you still provide an injection of positivity .. and with the current state of the world every little bit of wind, speed, dolphins, and a boat that doesn't disappoint is a positive. Thanks.
Bon voyage..
Positive thoughts! 💨💨
I just checked and ‘moonshot’ is gassing up in the BVI right now , so the race is on!!!! 🤪
watch for humpback whales 🐋 in the Mona canal and north of DR!! See you in Miami! you will make it! 😎😉
This Chanel sets the mark
Fingers crossed! Bon courage! what is the routing software you use on iPad? is that Octopus on tablet?
Good thing you have an expert diesel engine me ganic. One less thing to worry about.
Ps, Stephane, you cannot let things out of your control after your mood. Not worth it. 😢
Rooting for you Hug Stephane he’s suffering ☘️ ☘️☘️
I really feel for you guys! I have a similar personality to Shephane and know exactly how your feeling. I hate to fall short of a "win" too. Hope you can catch come good winds and steady sea state to whisk you to Maimi in time! Don't know if you can talk about this, but was wondering if you can divulge if there is a financial incentive to get the the show. Does Outremere sponsor you? You've spent LOTS of time, money and effort to get there on time and I wonder if some of this is offset by a contractual agreement or something. Or just tell me to mind my own business. 😝
You have already achieved the impossible just getting back in the water so quickly. Most would have thrown in the towel on day 1. Now you are in the hands of the gods. I’ve had boat show dilemmas in the past so just put it out there to the boat show gods to do their best and you never know, the magic might happen. Anything is achievable when all the pulleys run smoothly. Loving your feeds. Well done, you guys rise above and beyond.
Good luck guys, must be feeling more like work than cruising, but hopefully over soon ? Have to confess I feel your pain for the engine hours….
Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
You will make it
It is what it is, you can`t change what is beyond your control. As Forest Gump has told us, "shit happens"
If you can`t get the boat in the show, I`m sure Outremer can still find a way to show her.
Big hugs Holly et courage mon brave Stephane, xx
You're doing everything you can and that's all that can be done. Enjoy the passage – you do math like I do math 🙂
We were out to dinner last night in the Exumas, and talking about you guys. Our friends, Bruce and Sara Rabun, apparently know Amy. What a small world
Rest in Puerto Plata marina. Depart early morning on Thursday – seas can be a little challenging but nothing an Outremer 52 could not handle- 600+ nm with back winds you'll make it in the night of 11th Feb / early morning 12th to Miami. That's my bet. Good luck guys 🤞
I just love the channel and the great raw content. The multiple episodes per week gets me into a routine like I feel apart of your journey unlike a weekly snippet of how your week has gone. Thanks so much, sad to hear you may not make it for the display of your beautiful vessel but remember it’s the adventure not the journey. If nothing else this may diminish the reliving over and over of that irresponsibly stupid incident. Safe travels.
C PAS ENCORE PERDU….je ne veux pas le croire a cet instant…AWEN, divinité CELTIQUE va implorer d'autres puissances pour passssssser !!
You have all of us hoping you'll make it but as we know…. Mother Nature has the last word. Sail safe and keep that goat attitude! Fair winds!
