I Test Norwegian’s Latest Ships To See Why Cruisers So Unhappy
I met so many regular cruisers on my Norwegian Viva cruise that disliked this new class of ships that I started wondering if Norwegian had actually gone out of their way to create a totally new type of ship that they knew current Cruisers would not like perhaps to attract different Cruisers perhaps
Cruisers like me now I’m not a regular Norwegian Cruiser largely because I’ve not been a fan of the Norwegian ships I’ve been on but this ship did some things so different ly it made me rethink my position as you will hear and also you’ll find out whether Norwegian
New class of ships are right for you too this new class of ships are called Prima class ships the first being Norwegian Prima Norwegian vivva was the second that I was on and the third is Norwegian Aqua they hold between 3,100 and 4,000 passengers based on how many people are
Sharing cabins and on these Norwegian have discarded their existing ship layouts to embrace a concept I found incredibly like virgin voyagers ships which is instead of having a having these big Grand venues they’ve turned it instead to lots of small venues dotted all around the ship to basically spread
People out across the ship so although it’s a big ship carrying thousands of guests there are almost no big Central venues before I get into some of the drawbacks of this overall layout and concept I do though need to explain some key additions and some very interesting and notable introductions one is having
A surprisingly small pool and pool deck considering the up to 4,000 passengers instead they’ve created the Ocean Boulevard for people to hang out on and around instead of a big pool deck again much like on Virgin ships this is basically a widened prominar deck running all the way around deck 8 around
This Ocean Boulevard are infinity pools seating areas two glass floor walkways called The Ocean Walk some bars and outside seating for quite a few restaurants the boulevard becomes a bustling and busy space day and night and it can get rather noisy creating a problem for the cabins on the decks
Above it which many people I spoke to said they found an issue another change akin to Virgin voyages is they have dispensed of their usual traditional Cruise Line theater to have a large Flex ible space where seats retract to enable each show to have a different layout so
A traditional theater layout for the Broadway show which on Viv with wheatle juice and then game shows they run like Deal or No Deal for their production show called icons a review Show featuring songs of iconic Stars Through the Ages it had a Cabaret style layout
And then for a prom party show night inspired by one in Back to the Future it was an open space with dancing and podium and so on most evenings it also became a big open nightclub it seemed to have what I thought a rather small capacity for the size of the ship so
Getting bookings for the shows I found I needed to move really fast on which also people commented on one introduction that I and everyone I met liked again very similar to Virgin voyages is the indulge Food Hall the while on Virgin voyages it actually replaces the traditional Cruise buffet with a range
Of different dining stalls and carts and cabins on Norwegian they have kept the Surfside Buffet but they’ve added the indulge food hole now this is included within the fair and I use an electronic plant at my table to order food from a wide range of different themed food
Stores Asian Indian Tapas and so on and they are then delivered directly to my table it has an inside space and then outside space on the Ocean Boulevard they have though kept and built in many of the big entertainment features from other Norwegian ships things that are
Not on Virgin ships on top of the ship is the huge Speedway go-kart track which on Aqua is a water slide attraction also in this area on Deck 18 is the Bulls ey darts area Tea Time Crazy Golf the stadium as they call it with table tennis shuffle board pickle board and
Other games like that they also have a wave water slide ride kids Aqua Park and then these long slides down the side of the ship from deck 8 18 all the way down to deck 8 there’s also the Galaxy games area full of virtual reality games but
What did not work that well and why I found that creating these small spaces dotted around the ship to spread people around created a less intuitive layout and many people me included found it pretty hard to just find my way around it was so alien this was made more
Challenging by the lack of a big Focus area with all the main bar the shops music venues and restaurants are usually cluttered around on most cruise ships that we’re all used to so unlike other Norwegian or in fact most cruise ships that I’m used to with a big Central
Atrium this was not the case on Prima class ships there is one sort of multi-level Atrium with guest services a couple of bars Starbucks and some shops but then I had to hunt out the other bars the other restaurants the other venues because they were dotted all
Around the Ship Without what I felt a clear theme or clustering that did all feel a bit random it also meant there were some of these strange long hallways on some decks they kind of shoehorned then in things to fill up these hallways with things like the Park West artworks
A couple of shops the layout to me felt all a bit random and I found finding places was less easy than on other cruise ships and other Norwegian ships I have to say I didn’t find virgin voyages particularly intuitive either for exactly the same reason now on the positive side I kept
Stumbling across new places and venues right until the end of my 10 days of cruising on the ship so that was the first main frustration people I spoke to had with this Premier class of ships the sense of it not being very intuitive and easy to find venues it kind of lacked a
Sense of logic now the second key criticism they had is because of the focus on these small venues some of the venues Prov to be too small for how popular they are and they were actually quite hard to get into at times now the main ones I found that were guilty of
This were the indulge Food Hall which is probably way more popular than Norwegian had expected I often found it really hard to get a table at popular times especially on my cruise where it wasn’t always great weather so you couldn’t really sit outside so everyone had it pack inside the Surfside Buffet also
Seemed way too small for breakfast and lunch they had to use the nearby food Republic and Palama restaurants to have enough seating and even then it was often still challenging The Improv at se comedy club was always standing room only and across the way the Sid Norman’s
Poor House live music venue was ramful and hard to get into most evenings I think what’s also important about this ship is that it’s designed for warm weather sailings as I saw my sailing which was actually a chillier November in Europe and the ship became pretty cramped inside when people could not be
Out on the open deck spaces but this was further exacerbated by something Norwegian dialed up on this class of ships and it was the cause of the third big complaint most Cruisers I spoke to had they felt a lot of the ship was closed off to regular guests making it
More crowded than it needed to be as on this new class Norwegian has not only carried a cross but increased several of its well-known segregated spaces reducing and absolutely definitely cutting off a lot of the ship to many of the passengers the biggest offender people I spoke to that felt was the
Haven this is an access controlled area for sweet guests only I could see because I was staying in there that Norwegian have leaned into this very heavily on these ships it’s clear this class of ship is designed to carry and cater for more premium sweet Travelers a
Lot of space is taken over Bar Haven Suites across multiple decks at the rear of the ship the Haven itself covers a large space on Deck 16 with a Lounge Bar restaurant twole Deck with infinity pool bar hot tub sauna and steam room it’s a
Lot of space they also have on the ship a large access controlled solo cabin area with lounge kids clubs of course also take up a large space too there’s also a paid for adult only Vibe beach club with pools and bars shutting off another section of the ship then of
Course the go-karts and the game Space closes off another big part of the ship especially if you addd into that and don’t want to use those so we could see why for those not in the Haven solar cabins or you see in the kids club or
Adult only area it would feel like they were being crammed into a smaller amount of space though when it came to dining like on all Norwegian ships few complained about the lack of choice the included dining venues were the local bar and grill the Surfside Grill and
Cafe the buffet Hudson and the Commodore room which the main dining rooms indulge food hall and then in the observation Lounge there were snacks and a pretty good afternoon tea those things were all included the addition paid for specialty dining included huku which is Tepanyaki Kagney Steakhouse food Republic a
Contemporary Asian place that I really liked labistro French Los Lobos Mexican Nas Sushi an by scarpet Italian and pelar seafood so a lot of added venues there were many many bars but as I mentioned they were dotted all over the place I did feel this new class is a
Conscious decision though to create a different concept for nor region and also to their big Resort competitors like Royal Caribbean MC cruises and Carnival who do focus on these big iconic spaces for crowds on all of those cruise lines so as a result of the smaller venues I did actually find the
Ship was way less boisterous much quieter it was much less noisy compared not only to those other lines but even to my experiences on Epic Breakaway and on core Norwegian ships I did feel like this is a ship designed to attract a different type of person because certainly for me I actually really
Enjoyed it because I felt although I was on a big ship and I’m not a big fan of big ships and but I still had all the the choice but it wasn’t as manic it wasn’t as loud it wasn’t as crazy on those other ships certainly if I was
Heading back to Norwegian the prier class would absolutely be the choice I would have versus their other ships now I mentioned that I traveled in the Haven and to find out what that is really like and if it really is worth the Hefty price join me in this video where I
Reveal something rather startling about it that most people don’t appreciate see you over there
I met so many regular Norwegian cruisers on my Norwegian Viva cruise that disliked this new Prima class of Norwegian Cruise Line ships that I started wondering if Norwegian had actually gone out of their way to create a new type of ship they knew current cruisers wouldn’t like! Perhaps to attract different cruisers, perhaps cruisers like me.
I’m not a regular Norwegian cruiser, largely because I’ve not been a fan of the Norwegian ships I’ve been on, but this ship did some things so differently it made me rethink my position, as you will hear.

How much did the trip cost you?
Ncl hates my answer you got a designer that beautiful but nothing works small venue. Awful idea so much wasted space. Cold day or cold trip 50% ship not useable draft in ship horrible doors open let cold in. Too much room to haven those with no money screw off also area adult was free now pay that bs. theater where it trans form well that mean it does nothing good and the haven only seating at all shows cut down on seating also some seat is high to climb up to and little comfort
Was on Prima august 2023. Insufficient live entertainment due to lack of large second venue. I expect to be able to go to cabaret or similar after the main show. There was music only. Also even when I had bookings in the theatre I had to stand. Small venues could also be standing room only. I was back in my room by 10 ish most nights.
Epic fail just got off the Viva two weeks ago great itinerary boat lousy only three venues. People want to go to 3300 people trying to get into a venue that holds 72 people average age of cruisers and 60s and 70s making them stand in line for an hour two hours three hours by the time the show is over. I have never heard so many complaints from pissed off. Customers that have paid premium dollars Too small of a ship major major miss save your money.
I have cruised on the Prima and really enjoyed it!
Frame flex! Frame flex! Frame flex!
I had a 2021 Momentum 397 with a broken frame as well. Traded it in.
We won’t discuss my current trailer. 🤬
The spread out space and open space on Deck 8 didn't work on our cruise as the weather didn't allow the Ocean Boulevard to be opened. there isn't enough inside space on the Prima for 3100 passengers for the three days it took for us to sail from Le Havre to Reykjavik omitting a Belfast stop due to wind speed. In addition this ship is taller and shorter than (say) the Norwegian Jade, and does not ride as well, even in comparatively flat waters. We sailed through the middle of Storm Hector on the Jade and the ride was vastly better even at the worst- my wife was seasick on the Prima. For our next cruise we are revisiting the Breakaway….
I went on the prima. I did not enjoy it at all. It is overcrowded noisy. You couldn't get into shows you couldn't get into the places you wanted to eat I even got food poisoning in the main Hudson restaurant and this was my 7th cruise on Norwegian and it was my worst.
From all you said about that ships class… We are out!!!!
No interest whatsoever in this ship or its sisters.
Everything we would want to use while on this vessel seems to be extremely small and/or overcrowded.
Plus the prices!!!! NO way would I want to pay that much for a balcony where I can hardly use it because of the noise issues.
This ship is not for us!
Thank you Gary for your fair comments .
Great video and really helped to explain some good and not-so-great feedback I have heard about NCL Prima. It certainly feels like this ship class is focused on a specific type of cruiser and has an intentional design you will either love or hate. Sailing on 2/9/24 in the Haven, and I'm looking forward to it.
There was a bit of pushback on the Edge class on Celebrity, and while some have fled and are staying on the Solstice Class as their preference, I've noticed plenty of all ages on the Edge class as people come around. It could take time. Thank you for the video!
I'm someone who didn't like this ship. It felt like we were being bludgeoned into paying for things which would normally be free, like hot tub access. In his other video Gary liked the Haven-only elevators, but I found it very annoying when I was toward the stern that I couldn't use the nearest elevators and had to walk really far forward to get to an elevator. And there were sometimes simply no tables at dinnertime unless I went to a paid specialty venue.
The layout obviously has been thought through in a great deal of depth by Norwegian, things would not have been done randomly, so it would be really intriguing to understand more behind their thinking. I suspect the increasing size of cruise ships is leading to an increased desire to experiment with layouts and see what's going to work best as the industry continues to grow.
For what it's worth, multiple smaller venues would be infinitely more fun for me – lots of things to discover and explore, but without feeling forced into crowded spaces and places I'm not really in to.
We cruised on the Prima just before Christmas. We had some of the same observations. Beautiful ship but I certainly prefer the Breakaway class. Biggest complaint for me was the carton waters (standard for NCL now), very small buffet and small venues. The MDR was good and easy to get into. The Indulge Food Hall was a major hit but certainly too small. Not sure I’ll go on another Prima class ship. I need to try the Encore and Bliss..
You may not have enjoyed the cruise so much if you were not in the haven. I am tired of cruise lines restricting more and more spaces to higher paying guests. My next cruise booking is likely to be on a cruise line that opens the most space to all.
Went on Encore to Alaska July 2023. We had a great time because Alaska is the star of the show, not the ship. Not enough public areas, and even worse when the speedway etc. were shut down due to weather. Impossible to get an elevator or a seat in the buffet. I think a Caribbean cruise on this ship might not be fun. OTOH, just came back from a Holland cruise and much less crowded.
I went on a Breakaway class ship, and having enough indoor space to comfortably absorb everyone was an issue on there too. Food wasn't great either. I do not plan on sailing on Norwegian again.
I've only been on one ship so far. The NCL Escape. I was wondering what you didn't like about this class ship. Although I know one thing that was similar to the Prima Class. Sid Norman's was packed.
IF they had help yourself ice cream machines then people would love it even more?
My wife and I took a 10 day cruise from Venice to Athens in October 2023. We became aware of some of the complaints about the new design, but we were determined to have a good time. With no scheduled sea days, there was a limited amount of time to just relax and enjoy the ship amenities. I’m not a freestyle dining fan and found that the reality of an open schedule meant you could never really just go wherever you wanted to dine, whenever you wanted to dine. Waits were never long and if you checked the interactive ship maps by the elevator banks- you could always find what dining options were filled to capacity. A layout like the Prima’s was interesting in that each day there was always something new around the corner. We had a great time and would definitely book this class again.
Too many people! Interesting layout though.
I wish Vibe Beach Club had a pool. Only a couple of hot tubs and a bar.
In concept (having not tried these new ships yet), I personally don't really find the "It's hard to find stuff!' complaint compelling. It's a ship. We're on it for a week or more. There is an app with a detailed map. Explore. Enjoy finding stuff. But I do think the critique about the randomness of the layout is a very good one. Having some sort of themed concept to the more diffusive layout strategy seems like the way to do it. It can be a loose theme like "Casual fun" where you locate a sports bar-themed eatery, the arcade, a late-night pizza joint, and an adults-only pub that does nightly trivia. And another one could be "A Fancy Night on the Town" with the art gallery located near two of the fancier specialty dining restaurants, a piano wine bar, and a few high-end shops. Having that sort of division not only allows like minded (smaller) crowds to gather, but also allows guests to curate their experience and have what almost amounts to evening "excursions" where you visit an area of the ship you maybe haven't seen before, and enjoy a themed experience. Then, try a different one the next night and have a totally different evening experience. That sounds cool to me, and would be a neat change-up from the "everyone goes to the MDH, then everyone heads to the theater" flow that predominates most evening cruise experiences.
Was on NCL Jewel this past summer and enjoyed it. I always prefer the mid-sized ships more than large ones. I do not need to have a go kart track taking up multiple levels of a ship- what a waste of space. If I want that, I will go to Great Adventure for the day. This ship seems even worse than most other large ships. While I like NCL, I will never get on this class.
i wonder how many complaints will be solved just from people getting used to the new layout
What is it with this bow design which looks ugly. Ship from the outside looks hideous.
I would love to see you go on ICON of the Seas. Royal really went out of their way to spread people out but in a totally different way.
Sailed on Norwegian spirit, bad service, bad food, bad entertainment, small cabins, really tiny bathrooms, skip this ship. Won’t sail on NCL again!
That ship is just so ugly – there again many cruise ships now are horrendous. I guess when you are on it it doesn't really matter though!
Pay to use Adult only area? I am amazed that it seems like a full 1/3 of the ship is pay for use. Makes say no to Norwegian. It’s also amazing what cruise lines will up charge for since Covid.
I haven’t cruised on the Prima Class ships but I’ve been on the Encore. The venues are too small even on that ship. Pool areas are microscopic as well. I can’t understand why NCL can’t get their ships right.
we just got off the NCL Getaway in NYC after 10 day Bermuda/Carribean cruise and many many other cruisers, many with 30+ cruises, thought the service was unusually awful and the buffet had skimpy poor quality choices, and one person we spoke to got food poisoning from the buffet. "free drinks package" cost $600+ for 3 of us (and one cant drink alcohol) in mandatory service charge. Perhaps they have a new strategy emphasizing specialty dining and haven/1st class. regular class is seriously hurting. long lines to get into dinner (tropicana, taste, savor) or shows, reservations were not honored (except for specialty dining), included dining made getting drinks very very slow and meals were always delivered cold and poor quality. outback steakhouse and below type quality unless you upgrade to specialty dining. we will not return anytime soon.
You hit the nail on thr head with the design. Went on Viva 2mo ago. While I love how modern it can be and some areas like the observation lounge and the Indulge food hall, the overall design feels disjointed. In addition, the limited pool areas, and the very crowded design of the buffer are disappointing.
Was there any dining exclusive to the Adults Only and Haven spaces? There is a part of me which says – WHEN PROPERLY INSTRUCTED/INFORMED – this class of ship might be very attractive in providing private space for those who wish a) a small ship experience but the itinerary of this vessel, and b) a less-chaotic kid-free zone for relaxation at sea. Those wishing all the bells & whistles of a large ship and the kids-oriented attractions would have their space, and those wishing a more sedate and less crowded atmosphere would have theirs. But I could see this working only if those desiring these "less energetic" spaces have access to food venue(s) in their space to avoid the excessively crowded venues you spoke of in the #1 concern.
I liked the culture of Norwegian. We did carnival and HATED IT. Went to Norwegian next time and loved it. Royal Caribbean kinda fell between for us. I'd go on Norwegian again.
I really dislike their classist segregation. When you cut out real estate for the Haven, the go carts, the slides, etc there’s little room to find a quiet space to relqx
We sailed on Prima in September and agree with most of what you've said. We're not regular cruisers like you but had this been our first cruise it would probably have also been our last. Fortunately we have had much better experiences on other ships so this won't put us off completely. The biggest issue to my mind is overcrowding in most of the venues. We were on a cold weather cruise (Iceland and Norway) and so much of the ship was unusable. The outside seating areas in many of the bars/restaurants, the (admittedly lovely) promenade deck, the go-carts and water slides were all closed for large parts of the cruise. Add this to the Haven, the Spa, the Vibe Beach Club and other areas that were only available to those paying extra and there didn't seem to be very much ship left for those in the standard cabins without extras. You mentioned in your other video that the exclusive areas for Haven customers didn't seem to be used much. This was clearly the case on our cruise also as many of the people we met in non Haven areas were Haven guests. This of course only exacerbated the feeling of overcrowding in these areas. We also found the service in the bars, when you eventually found a seat in one, to be poor. Not helped by the fact that the lack of seats meant that most of the bars had people sitting all along them on bar stools meaning it wasn't even easy to go to the bar and get drinks yourself. To finish the negatives we thought the entertainment on board was the poorest of any ship we've sailed on. On the plus side the cabins were probably the nicest we've experienced (other than the lack of soundproofing) and the selection and quality of food was pretty good.
I think comparing NCL to Virgin is comparing apples to potatoes. Completely different in almost every way. I think you need to take a proper cruise on Virgin, as I understand you have only taken a promo cruise out of Portsmouth for a couple of days. I find virgin ships to be very intuitive, very easy to navigate, and never feel crowded even at capacity. By the third day of my virgin cruise I could find my way around with a blindfold on. And when considering value for money, there is no comparison. A fair comparison is only valid if you have sailed with virgin as many times as you have sailed with NCL.
My experience on the prima almost made me abandon cruises altogether.
Of course they will cater more to those that are willing to spend more….duh. You can get less people on your ship and earn more money or bring more people on ship and earn less money. Even let's say you break even…it's kinda still less because you brought more people wherein you could bring less people and make more money.
And the less people there is the better the experience. People are too spoiler from these cruises. I don't even feel bad for them upcharging you on everything.
It’s fun to think VV has some level of influence on other lines & illustrates that you can’t pick and choose elements of family ships vs non-traditional cruises & expect them to gel. I’d be curious to test it out tho.
We had only done six cruises on NCL and the previous one was on the Prima. I’m not a fan. I didn’t like the restaurants other than Le Bistro but the other speciality restaurants were frankly bland. We will avoid those ships in the future.
Thank you for sharing your observations of this cruise ship.😊
My neighbor who takes three cruises a year did one on The Prima Class last Summer. She is very very experienced cruiser and was NOT amused by the ship, food, shows or accommodations. Not good I’d say! Her comment, “Oh, no way, never again.” 😳😳😳
Unusually, this class of ship was not designed by NCL. This class is very similar to the design of the MSC Seaside class and the Virgin ships: the shipyard, Fincantieri, actually designed it. NCL just took their "off the shelf" design and fitted their signature public rooms into it. I guess this was a quicker and cheaper option than designing a truly new class of ship. The décor and livery is of course uniquely NCL, but not the basic ships structure.
I have never been on an NCL cruise and this doesn't encourage me to do so.
I noticed the "Haven" was empty; hmm.
Gary, pls comment on the Studios, which I've always booked, as I'm hardly in the cabin. Not been on the new ships, tho'. Really like The Waterfront.
Thanks for all the information..
My wife and I have been on eight cruises on seven different lines. NCL is the ONLY one we will not do again. The entertainment venues are too small for the size of the ship and there is NO management visibility to make sure that people do not save a row of seats. There are lines everywhere. Also, it is the ONLY cruise line where they will not seat you with others which is one of the special things about cruising. And the employees are generally unhappy.
Ok, so it is Virgin Voyages with kids … That tells me immediately that I am going to stick with Virgin Voyages as it is my favorite cruise line and I do not want to deal with kids!!
