German city of Lübeck is located in the north and is known for its brick Gothic architecture. These first appeared during the Middle Ages, when the Hanseatic League’s capital was Lübeck. The city’s most recognizable feature is the 1478-completed brick Holsten Gate, which protected the ancient town situated on an island in the Trave. Reconstructed in the wake of World War II, St. Mary’s Church dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. This 19th-century brick structure served as the architectural prototype for other churches throughout northern Europe.
