Cotignac, a village in France’s Var department within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. Fontaine du Lavoir – In Cotignac there are eighteen fountains, almost all were built in the 17th century. The water in these fountains is so pure that you can drink it.

Cotignac has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. The temperatures are warmest in July and coolest in January. Cotignac is celebrated as one of the “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France,” and labelled with its badge in October 2022, marking it among the country’s most beautiful villages.

The Centre d’Art la Falaise, showcases diverse art forms including sculpture and photography and also facilitates classical to contemporary music concerts. Cotignac is located north of Toulon and approximately equidistant from Nice and Marseille, accessible by a 1.5-hour drive from both cities. The population of Cotignac recorded in January 2021 is 2,136 people.

Cotignac belongs to the “Villages de Caractère du Var,” where 15 municipalities work together, to enhance cultural and tourist appeal while safeguarding their natural, historical, and architectural assets. The pretty, winding streets, with their traditional 16th century stone houses are a delight to explore.

This charm attracted celebrities like Joe Dassin, who not only wed in Cotignac in 1978 but also established his home there, further cementing the village’s status as a sanctuary for those seeking nature, culture and a peaceful retreat away from the bustling Cote d’Azur.

Cotignac also captivated international stars. Eric Idle has been a longstanding resident, while icons like David Bowie, Roger Waters, and Robin Williams have enjoyed stays, highlighting Cotignac’s global allure.

The Provençal campanile, a masterpiece of design from 1496, modernised in 1963, that weaves history and innovation with its open ironwork built to withstand the mistral winds. Originally, it connected the chimes of a public clock to a bell-striking motor, embodying the rhythm of daily life.

Today, it boasts a 16th-century sundial, an echo of times when hours were marked not by numbers, but by the phases of the workday. Aux Enfants de Cotignac morts’ – memorial to the dead children of Cotignac, that made the ultimate sacrifice.

There is an open-air theatre, Le Théâtre du Rocher, behind the church, where concerts are held during the summer. Every summer, Cotignac hosts “Les Toiles du Sud,” an enchanting outdoor film festival set against its iconic tuff cliff in the historic amphitheater.

On the Place de la Mairie you’ll find the town hall and opposite it, the bell tower with a wrought iron campanile. ‘Le moulin du Piquet’ a former ancient oil mill. In 1521 the Lord transferred this mill to the Community, he reserved the olive milling rights for himself and his trusted men.

Of the 14 public oil mills that existed at the end of the 19th century, it is the last one that was operational. Rocher et grottes troglodytes de Cotignac – The towering tuff rock, looms over the picturesque village of Cotignac.

From the Quaternary period, the La Cassole river cascaded over this rock, with the village nestled at the foot of what was once a colossal waterfall. These cliffs were carved through the ages by the Cassole river’s mineral-rich waters, creating stalactites and deep rock cavities.

Exploring the cliff’s ancient fortifications is a highlight of visiting Cotignac, offering a glimpse into its enchanting geological wonders. Troglodyte dwellings were built into the Rocher de Cotignac 400m long and 80m high cliffs. Used by villagers for hundreds of years, as shelter during times of epidemic, war, rebellion, or invasion.

In times of rest and peace, the cave houses were used as warehouses and cold sleeping places for the animals. Many of the houses are built into the rock itself and are still used as homes today.

In the 18th century, abundant water led to the building of irrigation systems, washhouses, and mills, fostering growth in tanneries, hat making, and textile production. The region thrived on its lush, fertile lands along Mount Bessillon’s slopes, cultivating olives, wheat, grapes, and quince.

Surrounding the village, extensive sheep farming flourished alongside silkworm breeding, which peaked in the 19th century but dwindled after World War II. The river’s course has since shifted to the east of the village, joining the Argens river.

The historic waterfalls have shaped the mesmerising petrified falls and crevices, which provided ancient shelters for both people and animals. Les Tours Sarrasines are the two 12th century medieval towers which sit on top of the cliffs.

Apparitions of the Holy Family – On August 10, 1519, a miraculous vision of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus was bestowed upon Jean de la Baume, a craftsman,

Leading to the divine command to erect a chapel at the site of this heavenly apparition. In 1660, Saint Joseph appeared to shepherd Gaspard Ricard, leading him to a perennial spring and inspiring the creation of a chapel dedicated to him.

Cotignac, unique for the Holy Family’s visitation, attracts 150,000 pilgrims yearly, all set for a spiritual journey to its sacred sanctuaries. Porte de la Puade – the only archway entrance preserved out of the eight gates that made up the 16th century ramparts.

To the south of the village is the newer part of Cotignac. On the Place du Cours you will find shops, restaurants and terraces. You will find the most cafes and restaurants on the Cours Gambetta. The cafés here are popular with locals, where they can relax, socialise and watch the world go by.

Constructed in the 13th century, Eglise Saint Pierre boasts a grand facade that underwent significant expansion and reorientation in 1700, retaining only its original nave while embracing stained-glass windows and side aisles from the 17th century.

The facade’s inscription, “Liberté Egalité Fraternité,” a nod to the Republican movement under Napoleon, mirrors the sentiment found in many other villages. Romanesque architecture highlights include a unique skylight above the altar and an imposing organ, introduced in 1872 with red crosses on its pillars symbolising consecration in 1266, distinct from Templar symbols.
