In 2024, the Queen Mary 2 is celebrating a significant milestone – two decades of sailing since its inaugural voyage in early 2004. This remarkable 151,400-ton ship was born out of the ambitious “Queen Mary Project,” announced by Cunard Line in 1998, which aimed to construct the “biggest and most luxurious ocean liner ever.”
Constructed by the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France, the Queen Mary 2 was officially christened by the late Queen Elizabeth II in Southampton on January 8, 2004. Following the christening ceremony, which featured performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Marines band to honor Cunard’s British heritage, the vessel embarked on its maiden voyage, a transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale.
Prior to commencing its regular transatlantic service, the Queen Mary 2 hosted a media preview cruise and an 11-night Caribbean journey.
Distinguished as the world’s last ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2 predominantly spends the year conducting one-way Atlantic crossings between New York City and Southampton, United Kingdom. Some of these voyages also include the German port of Hamburg for embarkation or disembarkation. These six- to eight-night journeys are unique in that they consist entirely of sea days and are typically faster than standard cruise voyages.
After completing its 108-night global tour in 2024, the Queen Mary 2 is scheduled to offer a variety of cruises ranging from two to 13 nights. These trips will explore destinations such as Western Europe, the Norwegian Fjords, the British Isles, Canada & New England, the Caribbean, and more.
