Lecce, the main city of Salento, is one of the most visited art cities in Italy. The historic center of Lecce is famous for its Baroque churches and palaces, whose facades in Lecce stone are richly decorated, so much that Lecce is considered the “lady of the Baroque”.
In this short video I will take you around the streets and squares of the historic center of Lecce on a sunny September morning. The city lends itself to walking because a large pedestrian area makes it accessible even to those who travel with a stroller. Starting from the spectacular Basilica of Santa Croce, the most evident example of Lecce baroque, we continue through alleys and avenues up to Piazza Sant’Oronzo with the column dedicated to the patron saint and the Roman amphitheatre, testimony to the most remote past. Further on you arrive at Piazza del Duomo, a closed square that was once closed off at night. A tour of the historic center of Lecce, however short, is an authentic happening in the Lecce baroque, perhaps completed by the exploration of the artisan workshops dedicated to the processing of papier-mâché and the tasting of the many Apulian gastronomic specialities. Even in this, the capital of Salento is second to none.

It goes without saying that Lecce is a hot city in summer and wandering around its wonders for a long time can be very challenging. Undoubtedly Spring would be the ideal season for a more thorough visit that the city certainly deserves. We wanted to include a visit to Lecce in our Apulian itinerary to at least get an idea. I believe that in the summer, especially if you travel with children, a little tour is better than none.
