WHERE’S THE SNOW ???!!! Ski Trip Camping In Our VW California Camper Van pt 1
Hi everybody I’m JT welcome to another video from me here at Camp ofan journey and we are just about to head off on our first exciting adventure of 2024 to the French Alps here in Salsbury it’s 10° pouring with rain pretty miserable to be fair so hopefully the Journey Down to the Alps
Is going to see us head towards some better conditions for skiing we’ve got a Fair old way to go before we get there about 750 miles so hopefully we’ll have an uneventful trip but stick around enjoy the video and we’ll see you in the Alps Euro tunnel here we come stage one You have arrived with half an hour earlier booking okay so after a very wet miserable blowy Journey from Salsbury all the way around the M25 loads of standing water quite a lot of heavy rain we have arrived at the Euro tunnel terminal in Bon uh we were
Booked in for uh around about um 20 P 10 and uh we’ve been offered an earlier uh train time uh which is great so we’ got a booking which is about half an hour earlier which is fantastic for no extra charge so we’ll get checked onto that
And uh hopefully that will all run to to time it’s not particularly busy here this evening it’s a Thursday so we’re tracking perhaps a day ahead of the halterm traffic but noticeable having an awful lot of camp and motor homes here so I think there’s probably a lot of people doing the same
As what we’re doing and making that trip down through France to the Alps that’s that we’ll spend a little bit of time here just uh getting a little bit of rest and then we’ll freshen up and be ready to board the train in about half an Hour So there we are all loaded on the train after a very wet and Soggy Journey so it’s UK time about 20 10 and we should be arriving uh in France French time just to get us right about midnight we’re going to try and drive for 2 or 3
Hours find an air to stop at to get a few hours sleep overnight and uh head on down to the Alps tomorrow hopefully making good time if the traffic is nice and clear woohoo see you later losers losers one day no us be sad we be the is
Then so good morning everybody it is 6:30 a.m. we are at a French air um about 2 hours down into France from the Euro tunnel we stopped here overnight in the California about 4 hours 5 hours sleep I think it is that we’ve had um really really blustery uh we’re on quite I
Think quite high up uh this particular air is one that we’ stayed at before um I’ll put the name of it uh down on the on the screen uh but the facilities it’s not very exciting it’s not very glamorous it’s not fancy Park up but the facilities are
Good they’re clean they’re open all night and there’s lots of lighting as well so it’s um feels nice and safe so we’ve just said stopped here for the night to to break up the journey we’ve got about according to Google Maps about 8 hours Journey time from here to Borg
San Maurice so we’ll split that up in two separate uh probably two maybe three stints so we just packed everything up I think we’ve all managed to get a reasonable amount of sleep so I’m feeling fresher and ready for the next step of the journey but uh as you can
See it’s really really blustery but it’s mild the rain has stopped um heading towards the mountains it’s going to get colder but whether we see any snow we’ll find out maybe it’s time to go and find a Pano Shaka wonder if the cafe is open
So the other thing we need to do which is very important to kick us going for the day is to get a panel choler and a coffee so hopefully the bakery is open and we can pick up a freshly baked Pano chocola the coffee from the French auto
Rout station machines is also pretty good so just grab another one of those as well cuz I found my way this is one of the most important parts of traveling through France or just any trip to France a Pano shock that this is a service station one and it’s very very nice we
Are R PC about halfway on our trip in terms of total mileage and uh time now is around about um 9:00 French time and all being well we should be in Bor samanu early afternoon as long as traffic is on our side how we doing Harry I’m okay how’s
The trip it’s long it’s long well we’re halfway yes we’re halfway so hopefully we’ll be there early afternoon good news is that the French auto routs at the moment are nice and quiet traffic has been good so all being well that will continue that way least you got your book to read yes
I at least I’ve got my where are we now on the map over there it says rette e right yeah so there you go that’s where we are now we are on the A5 sh sho is the nearest town sh on according to the chatau vi we’ve been here before
What this very this very one yeah mushrooms recognize the name sh be that next up bone for fuel and then maybe I’ll brush my teeth into time yeah lots of my viewers like the fact that you read a proper map don’t know where I am where you are cuz
On there all you get is like a mile square mile I know where are we France let’s narrate down a bit and be a bit more specific than just France you’ve just going Pass Geneva we just pass Leon we pass Leon uh on the heading towards sh sh shambre is
The next way point on our journey and then once we get to shambre we turn left and head up into the Alps the weather is still pretty groty but we couldn’t hold out any longer so we’ve stopped to have some illegal bacon illegal bacon which is well needed because we’re
All quite peckish after our trip now so this is a real this is the reality of traveling in a Campa van in this time of year so there’s no Instagram filters no photosho blue skies this is rainy drizzly 12° we’ve already tried three different stops because they were too windy this
Was a bit more sheltered we’re down in a bit of a valley but we couldn’t wait any longer before we so kind to have a nice bacon roll and uh and then hopefully we’ve got just another couple of hours before we get to Bor San R we have a a pitch but for
Overnight a sweet te so we were just enjoying our lunch there and Harry said so far the trip seems to be going mostly to plan so we were curious as to which part wasn’t going to plan it I think it was just the weather yeah it was the weather and that I was
Quite hungry and that you were hungry so we’ve dealt with the hungriness as the weather we can’t do much I was living off of my pan sh you weren’t living off your pan of shop that you had at 6:00 this morning so yeah so whether we can’t
Do anything about if it was snowing and not raining that would be better but it’s not it’s raining but as CLA said we were making better progress with our travel as well so hopefully hopefully might be we will continue to make good progress for the rest of this after my
Way I my I my I in the so it’s 4:00 on Friday afternoon and we’re on the Final Approach to b s Marice on the n90 rout nationa and we’ve either been very skillful or very lucky in that we’ve absolutely sailed through the last stretch which is normally a
Nightmare I don’t think we’ve ever done this journey in in daylight and we’ve had no holdups at all in the usual hot spots around Albertville and shambre and all the usual places where it’s gets very busy so normally this trip this last bit is in darkness we don’t get to see the
Mountains can see the mountains we can see the snow on the mountains but it’s still quite warm it’s 10° outside there’s no snow at you can see at this level but we been really lucky with the tripping this is our first traffic queue since the M25 what M25 backing yeah I
Think here we go all right 20 plus 4 how about that Harry you were right okay so we found our pitch we’re on Pitch number 15 we’re not on a hardstanding pitch uh for tonight but it’s just for one night now um here at the campsite before we move
Across to our cabin for the rest of the week um plenty of space there’s quite a few people here quite a few English people so maybe um say hello to a few whilst we’re staying but yeah got ourselves set up popped up up popped off
With the boys to go and grab us a nice cup of tea or something and then we’ll just have a nice relaxing evening here it’s a little bit disappointing that there’s no snow on the ground here at uh campsite level um doesn’t feel cold doesn’t feel wintry it’s about 11 12
Degrees but uh has been unusually mild the whole of the Alps over the last few weeks so it may get colder next week forecast is for it to get colder and potentially for them to be some snow in the week but we shall see this time last
Year when we were here uh we were setting up and it was Min -8° bit of a difference so pitch as I said is good size all set up Electric hookup included there’s probably more space here than uh down on the hard standing area because there’s quite a few Vans
Down there they are packed in quite cozily yeah should do us for the night just need to decide what we’re going to have for tea so after a two nights and 750 plus miles of traveling in our California down to Bor Samar here in the French Alps uh we

These now some of you think might think that’s a bit of a copout from moving out of California but trust me four people staying in California for a week skiing I don’t think it’s going to work not for us but uh some of you might be braver or
Better at it than we are but uh we are very much looking forward to a week with a log burner Central Heating and a lovely view thanks for watching see you on the next Video N

So Who are Campervan Journey?
We are JT, Harry, Claire, Sam and Ben, oh and Hunny the Dog. We discovered camper vanning in 2015 when we bought our first Volkswagen T5 Combo after seeing many at our favourite campsites. We were staying with our tent, and dreaming that one day we would have our own Campervan. After much research, we bought and converted our own T5 Kombi to suit our requirements, check out the video on the channel. We soon discovered that owning a Campervan is a way of life and it is not just about amazing trips round Europe, it’s as much about great days out and family time…
We have been lucky enough to visit some amazing places with our van, many of which we know we wouldn’t have seen if we had not owned it. They instil a sense of adventure and where shall we go into your life.
After 3 years with the T5, we upgraded to a Volkswagen T6 California Beach, our current van, and we continue to enjoy travelling and visiting some amazing places. You can check out our latest videos and adventures here on the channel !
Please hit SUBSCRIBE! if this is your thing ! We try to make videos to share the good and bad of where we have been and some tips and tricks that we have learnt along the way, as well as reviews of some of the things we have bought to use whilst camping and places we have visited and stayed.
Remember, We believe that buying a Campervan was one of the best things we have ever done !!!
THANKYOU !!!

Hi JT in your previous video you mentioned that by travelling by van to your destination that you saved quite a bit of money. Maybe you could do a video of the breakdown of costs for your holiday to compare it with flying.
Hi, would be great to get an understanding of the total distance covered and fuel costs for such a trip, looking to purchase a people carrier type vehicle and this would allow me to gauge how much to budget for such trips. Thanks and good content as per normal.
Tarentaise valley on a Friday is definitely the way to do it. Especially at half term. Great trip.
We also set off on that Thursday 8th evening and caught a quick glimpse of your van at the Folkestone terminal and then again on the A26 before we stopped at Saint-Omer for the night before heading on to Champagny-en-Vanoise. Great to see how your journey compared!
Hi JT- we have been following your journey on Facebook on the Winterised Group and have been loving you regular updates on the weather and snow conditions. Your vid' makes us so excited, as we are heading back to the Alps in a few weeks time in the van. We love camping Huttopia at Bourg, but agree that a T6 is too small for winter camping as a family of 4…we are only 2 and it was pretty tight in January! We cannot wait to see what the chalets are like in side, as we have only ever seen them from the outside. Looks like you had a fab ski trip. Richard & Jackie
Very good 👍
These videos make my Sunday, absolutely love them. Thanks for sharing JT, I appreciate the work you put into them. Stay frosty my friend.
