Italien zwischen Gardasee und Dolomiten – Urlaub im Trentino | ARD Reisen
SUBTITLE: Hessischer Rundfunk * Music * It’s a mixture of everything. Mediterranean attitude to life, ancient traditions and modern lifestyle. Plus a landscape straight out of a picture book: mighty mountains, countless lakes and impressive landscapes. Trentino is always surprising. * Music: “It’s Wonderful” – Paolo Conte *
The province of Trentino is located in northeastern Italy, in the middle of the Italian Alps, and borders the Austrian states of Tyrol and Salzburg. The area stretches from the Dolomites to the northern part of Lake Garda. The capital Trento, or Trento as the Italians say,
Is surrounded by mountains in the middle of the Adige Valley, about 2 hours from Venice. The transition between the high Alpine mountains and the Mediterranean region is what makes the area so exciting. From the Dolomites of the Fassa Valley it is around 150 kilometers to the northern part of Lake Garda.
Anne-Sofie Kaas has been working in a sailing and surfing school in Riva del Garda for a year . The place is one of the hotspots for water sports enthusiasts as they find perfect wind conditions and good thermals here. The wind blows from the north until midday,
Then in the afternoon the breeze comes from the south. The 29-year-old Dane just wanted to vacation in Riva del Garda, surf and sail on a catamaran. Then she saw Lake Garda and knew she wanted to live here. *Music* I love this. There is room for everyone here.
There is room for children, there is room for people with a lot of experience. You can go kayaking, catamaran riding or you can do windsurfing, that’s pretty good. * Music continues. * Within a few months, Anne-Sofie completely replanned her life and moved to Trentino with her boyfriend.
Lake Garda has become their new home. I say this is the best place for me because I have everything here. I was here two years ago and thought: “I have to live here”. For me it’s quite… It fits! It’s completely perfect here. The lake is different at every time of the day.
When the wind changes, things get really adventurous on the water. Most holidaymakers find this exciting. There are a lot of people who are afraid, and others just say, “Quick, quick, quick!” But I see that everyone is a bit surprised. The most famous lake in Italy.
Here in the north he shows his rather calm side. Anne-Sofie Kaas loves exactly that. When we have a lot of rain, the water is completely green the next morning. The mountain here has a lot of stones and limestone. The rain causes the lime to get into the water
And the next day the water is completely green. Today it looks like a mare, all blue. No wonder that the picturesque Lake Garda is repeatedly used as a backdrop for films and television series. The northern section is closed to motorboats. Nowhere else is it so quiet on Italy’s most popular lake.
Anne-Sofie is now on the stand-up paddle. Just a few hundred meters from the shore in Riva del Garda and inaccessible by normal boat, there is a cave hidden in the rock. A magical place and one of Anne-Sofie’s favorite places. * Music: “Welcome Home, Son” – Radical Face *
It’s been 2 years since Anne-Sofie was here on Lake Garda for the first time and then her life changed completely. The lake, the unique landscape, the people. She is quite sure that her future lies here in Trentino. Lake Garda is the main attraction for holidaymakers who love the water, surfing and sailing.
The Comano Valley, about 30 kilometers away, is becoming increasingly popular for cyclists and mountain bikers . * Entertainment in Italian. * * Music * Giovanni Riccadonna has been offering bike tours through the area around Commano for a few years . Today he is on one of his favorite routes
With Natasha Bontadi, who also lives and works here . They both think it’s the end of September, the best time. You do a hundred tours a year, but it’s never boring. I don’t know why, but it’s always nice to see the valley. I also lived abroad, in Canada
And also in Germany and Russia for studies. But I think we have the perfect balance here. Because you have… Personally, I really like nature. The climate is also perfect all year round. We can hike from the lake to the three thousand meter peaks. There are many opportunities. That’s why I’m back again.
Rango is the name of the place on the route. One of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Six of them are in Trentino. The narrow streets, cobblestones and steep streets are not for untrained cyclists. The paths are easy to master with an e-bike. * calm music * The tour continues towards Bleggio Superiore.
The area is famous for walnuts. They have been grown here for centuries. Around 15,000 walnut trees grow here. At the Brochetti family farm, Maso Pra Cavai, the harvest will begin in a few weeks. The special specialties of the region can already be enjoyed during a break on the farm.
Giovanni and Natasha know the area and have driven the route many times. But for them too, the tour is a little break from everyday life. When you’re in these little streets you feel good again. I think someone who comes from outside feels even better. That’s a positive thing.
Farming has been practiced here on the farm for three generations. The family is somewhat proud of their own products. Salute! -Cin! Of course we have local products from here on the table. Let’s start with this, these are their farm walnuts. In the sweet version and in the salty version.
Then we have carrot cake with almonds and nuts. Also from their farm. Here we have raspberries, crostata in Italian, which is typically a cake with jam. Then local cheese and cold cuts. Practically you can see on the table what you saw before on your bike. What is produced here is practical.
From the land to the plate. The landscape and the typical products of the region. The bike tour through the Comano Valley is not primarily about covering as many kilometers as possible and reaching the limits of sport. It’s about discovering an area, getting to know people, places and their history.
From Comano Terme, Natasha continues alone, Giovanni has to go to another appointment. * Entertainment in Italian. * Ciao. – Ciao, thank you. It’s good that she knows her way around here, but after all, the area is her home. There are 297 lakes in Trentino.
From the small mountain lake to the large Lake Garda. The Valle dei Laghi, the valley of the lakes, is one of the highlights of the region. From Lake Toblino it is only a few minutes to Santa Massenza, a town famous for its grappa. There are 140 residents and 5 distilleries here,
All of which belong to the Poli family. Bernadino Poli is stressed, the grape harvest is starting and with it a lot of work. Grappa has been distilled here for around 100 years, and the small distillery runs at full speed in the winter months. Daughter Francesca Poli leads a tour of the distillery
And today also takes over the tasting with Natasha. * Entertainment in Italian. * Up to twenty different varieties can be tried here, different grape varieties. Storage in wooden barrels gives the grappa a very special taste. It’s a surprise for all the people who come here because it’s a very small production.
A family tradition and an artisanal distillery. Only around 10,000 bottles are produced in the distillery every year. That’s enough for the Poli family. I believe when there is a passion behind it, it’s not just a product that is made. It’s something that has always been done, something that has stayed here for generations.
And it should stay that way. Something that has been part of the region for generations – olive cultivation. The area above Lake Garda in Trentino is one of the northernmost olive growing areas in the world. Here at the 46th parallel there is a mix of Alpine and Mediterranean climates.
A dream for every olive farmer. * calm music * Giorgio Planchensteiner is convinced that the best olive trees grow in the north of Lake Garda. Harvest in a few weeks, just before the fruits turn from green to slightly purple. (in Italian) The proximity to the mountains, the proximity to the lake means
That our oil has completely different properties than other oils. It is very light, fruity and mild. The scent is different, very subtle. It is different from all others and is truly special. 1,500 tons of olives are harvested in Trentino from the end of October to mid-November
. But for Giorgio Planchensteiner, the olive groves above Lake Garda are more than just a place to work. It’s always nice. It’s always nice because we’re far away from traffic. There are few cars and little noise, it’s such a quiet oasis. It feels really good. * calm music *
But how does the green gold olive oil from Lake Garda taste? In the oil mills in Riva del Garda, visitors can taste it professionally. Tasting is actually a science in itself. When you put olive oil on bread, you get the taste of bread, which is why you do it in glasses.
Just to really figure out the smell and the taste. The glasses for tasting are blue so that the color of the oil does not influence the perception. But what is most important is the smell. An olive oil must always smell very fresh, like fresh grass or fresh herbs, but it must smell fresh.
Countless aromas can be tasted this way. As I said, a science in itself. It’s nice and pleasant, even on the tongue. A little more liquid and not as spicy, as rustic as the other one. A nice balance, very beautifully harmonious. Still a nice sharpness. Also that bitterness, very good.
But if you notice, very beautifully elegant. A very nice line, the spicy and the bitter are even. A nice balance. This is what Lake Garda tastes like! We continue from Lake Garda. About 15 kilometers away is Lake Ledro, one of the clearest and cleanest lakes in Trentino.
This is the home of Anna Maria Santolini. She has been working as a tour guide for years, showing tourists the most beautiful places in the Ledro Valley. * Music * Lake Ledro is my lake! Yes, the Ledro Valley is my birthplace
And I really have to say it is a beautiful valley to live in. I love traveling, but I always come back. Lake Ledro and the valley really offer a lot. The shores of Lake Ledro were settled 4,000 years ago, and the pile dwellings from the Bronze Age that were discovered by chance
Are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For many, the area is the quieter alternative to Lake Garda. For example, until 1989 you could n’t get to the Ledro Valley by bus. That’s why everything stayed relatively small and familiar. A hiking trail leads around 10 kilometers around Lake Ledro.
Some people run the tour every morning, says Anna Maria. You can also go hiking very nicely and not meet anyone. You can really do tours where you don’t see people. And sometimes you need something like that. Most tourists love the area because of the tranquility and of course the crystal clear lake.
There is a herb garden in Pieve di Ledro, where Anna Maria always stops off on her tours. The herbs and plants of the Ledro Valley are part of a very special story. The history of the Foletto family begins in 1855, when Giovanni Foletto opened the first pharmacy and laboratory in town.
The pharmacy still exists today and some of the rooms are now a museum. Alberto Foletto belongs to the 5th generation of pharmacists. It was important for him to continue the tradition. The ingredients for medicines and medication are stored in the display cases and cupboards . Some are highly toxic and sealed extra securely.
The herbs of the Ledro Valley are still part of many teas, but also liqueurs. For Anna Maria, a visit to the Pharmacy Museum is a kind of journey through time and is definitely part of a tour through the Ledro Valley. * Entertainment in Italian. *
The stories of the people who live here are often what make a place special. Just around the corner, always along Lake Ledro, is Maggiorina, a restaurant with a very special specialty. Maybe not necessarily Italian, but the story behind it is typical of the Ledro Valley. Valeria Spagnolli prepares Gnocchi boemi, Bohemian dumplings,
And Livanze, a type of pancake. The recipe comes from her grandmother, as does the ancient baking pan. (in Italian) This is my grandmother’s original pan. She brought them here from Bohemia. During the First World War many people fled from Trentino to Bohemia. After they returned home, they also brought traditional recipes with them.
Dishes that are still regularly served on the table in many families today. * Music: “It’s Wonderful” – Paolo Conte * When Valeria Spagnolli opened the restaurant with her sister , it was clear that Nonna’s delicious desserts had to be on the menu. A piece of family history and a beautiful memory.
I always think of my grandmother, who was in Bohemia during the First World War. She always made these dishes for us kids when we were little. Although many guests order the gnocchi boemi, only a few know the background. Anna Maria loves the stories of the past and – she loves Valeria’s cooking!
For us it is special. Above all, it is a tradition that you continue, the whole story behind it. And they taste, they taste good! They’re not great for your figure, but you can eat them. And because 3 dumplings and the Levanze are quite a lot,
It’s best to share them with your loved ones. This is also how Valeria’s grandmother taught the children. * Music * At the end of the tour, Anna Maria goes to a vineyard above Lake Ledro. Here she and her family have a property with a small holiday apartment.
The view of her lake makes her happy, but often thoughtful. I always think about peace. And actually I’m also thinking about the places where there is no peace. We are so lucky to have a job like this. Unfortunately, not everyone has something like that.
The location of Trentino in the border area between Italy and Austria was difficult, especially during the war years. The small town of Lusern was almost completely destroyed in the First World War. When the population returned to their village after years of evacuation from Bohemia, everything was in ruins.
But one thing remained: the language. The first inhabitants of the place came from Bavaria around 1000 years ago. Today around 270 people still live here. Most of them speak what is known as Cimbrian, like Fiorenzo and Luigi. It is an old Bavarian dialect, we say High German was born in this dialect.
Our language is based on the German language just as Latinum is based on the Italian language. We have many linguists who come to Lusern to study this language. We speak the old German language. * Converse in Cimbrian. * The smallest language island in the world. The remoteness of the place over centuries ensured
That this ancient dialect was able to survive. The Lusern Documentation Center is about the language, but also about the history of the families who lived here. After the Second World War, residents were banned from continuing to speak this barbaric dialect. The Cimbrian language should disappear from everyday life.
A difficult time for the people here. It was, in Italian they say, a Policia etnica. Because Mussolini wanted to have one people and one language and our language was not well regarded for that. Cimbrian continued to be spoken secretly in families – a blessing for today’s linguists!
The fact that they no longer have to hide, that their language belongs in Trentino just as much as Italian, was not a given for a long time. Luigi Nicolussi Castellan was formerly mayor of the town. It was always important to him that the ancient dialect did not die out.
We also think in Cimbrian and dream in Cimbrian, usually. But prayer has been introduced for 200 years, that the priest preaches in Italian and also makes the catechism. And so people learned to pray in Italian, we usually pray in Italian. But when we speak to the god about personal matters,
We speak to the god in Cimbrian. He can also speak Cimbrian, he can speak all languages. In many villages in Trentino, the old traditions are still preserved. But new ones are also being added. In the Dolomite village of Mezzano there are now red chairs with a bell.
The idea: Whenever visitors ring the bell, someone comes by and tells a story, an anecdote from the village. Manuela Corona has lived in Mezzano her whole life. The traditional costume is typical of the region, she says. The fabrics come from Venice and have often been in the family for generations.
The lace of the blouse is handmade by the women. What was life like before and what is it like today? In addition to the red chairs, what stands out in Mezzano are the many wooden installations scattered around the town. Artists were inspired by architecture and people’s everyday lives.
The wood sculptor and artist Gianluigi Zeni grew up here and his work is part of the exhibition. (in English) I was born in this village and this is my family’s village. This is where my roots are. It’s important to know where you come from.
Also so that you know where the path takes you. Mezzano has now also been included on the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The residents like the fact that there is now a kind of open-air art exhibition in the village . Gianluigi Zeni has immortalized himself with his wooden installation
On the facade of the former inn . My parents met here about 40 years ago. My family started here. Behind this door, so to speak! For tourists, it is the personal stories and the encounters that make the visit special. It is almost 100 kilometers from Mezzano to Trento, the capital of Trentino.
In a city ranking for the whole of Italy, Trento is at the top when it comes to quality of life. The old town with pedestrian zone is a mix of old and new. The summit of the clergy made Trent the center of the Christian world in the 16th century.
Today, it’s not just the 16,000 students who are bringing new momentum to the city’s residents. In June, the Orpheus Villa, a Roman aristocratic residence, was opened to visitors. The villa belongs to the underground city of Trento. After more than 20 years of restoration work, the mosaics can be admired again.
Alberta and Alberto live and work here, For them it is the first tour of the newly opened exhibition. Archaeologist Cristina Bassi explains that the villa was built in a century AD. The construction of the floor is a sophisticated thermal system, a type of underfloor heating from ancient times. Before the restoration,
Only a few remains of the wall could be seen above the city. Everything was cordoned off for years. As a child, I was always curious and wanted to know what was down there. And then there was this renovation, it took a long time and now citizens and tourists can finally visit
And see what is here. It was a very important discovery for the people who live here too. We knew the villa was there, that it was being renovated, but finally it’s here! The Buonconsiglio Castle has always been one of Trento’s landmarks. Alberta and Alberto visit the castle of good advice
Today in rather moderate weather. Even in the city with the highest quality of life, the sun doesn’t always shine. The bishops, the rulers of the city, lived here until 1803. Today the castle is a museum and exhibition space. And when it rains, it’s just the right place for a tour through history.
Trent is known as the gateway to the south. For many who travel to Italy via the Brenner Pass, it is the first city where Italian is spoken. For Alberto, it’s the mix of everything that makes his city so interesting. Trento has always been a place that has connected different cultures,
Italy with Austria and Germany. You can see it in the architecture and also in the culture of the people. Visitors enter the Eagle Tower through a narrow corridor. The fresco cycle “Ciclo dei Mesi”, Cycle of Months, from the 14th century is considered a masterpiece of Gothic wall painting.
The pictures show the life of courtly society and the work of the farmers throughout the year. The months of spring are very beautiful. We have March, April, May and it’s interesting because the representation goes from one month to the other. * Entertainment in Italian. * These pictures are
Very famous for the people who live here in Trento, we know them. But my impression is that we don’t visit the castle as often as we should. It’s “wow” when we come here. We know it, but it’s so beautiful! So there are enough reasons to visit the castle
Again and again, even as a local. And maybe things will look completely different when the weather is nice. The sun is shining again just in time for the farmers market on Saturday. The market on Piazza Dante is a must at the end of the week. Alberta also left her umbrella at home today.
She is about to lead a group of tourists through her city. Maybe they’ll stop here later. The cable car at the valley station on the banks of the Adige connects Trento with the Sardagna district. In four minutes you can climb 600 meters. For the city’s residents, the cable car is
An everyday means of transport. A real highlight for tourists and visitors. * Music * The Endrici family winery is located almost 20 kilometers north of Trento . Torben Endrici moved here from Germany in 2019, of course for love. The love for wine, but also the love for Lisa Maria,
Whom he met while studying wine business in Geisenheim, Hesse. Here in the aroma garden he shows visitors how the taste of the wine is made up and what you should pay attention to when enjoying it. This is Cola-Herb and the same aroma structures as in Cola-Herb can also be found
In the Cabernet Franc grape variety. In order to create a complete 360 degree experience for our visitors to the winery , we have planted 22 grape varieties here in our vineyards in the Jardino de profumo, in our aromatic garden, which in turn represent all the grape varieties of Trentino.
Wine has been grown in the family for 5 generations. After studying in Germany it was clear: I was going back to Trentino. I am lucky to have gotten to know both cultures. My mother is German, my father is Italian and I was lucky enough to see everything from a distance.
Also because of my stay abroad and because of that, I would say that it is one of the characteristics of Italian culture. To enjoy every moment, to enjoy every lunch if possible, to sit together with the family, to drink a glass of wine.
Getting involved in a new country, a different culture and language. That wasn’t a problem for Torben Endrici. The decision to move to Italy and work in the family business was exactly right for him. I have life with my Lisa. I have a life with about 300 days of sunshine a year.
I have la dolce vita, which means incredibly good food, good wine, drinks in general, the attitude to life. And of course, if you can pursue a passion, both privately and professionally, then such a decision is easy. Accordingly, after a year of dating , I said yes pretty quickly when it was said:
“If we continue, it definitely has to be in Trentino.” Of course, being a winemaker isn’t just about walking around in this shirt. We also have to put all this romance aside. Of course we also have those days when it is so beautiful. But like any other job, it is sometimes tiring.
It is also sometimes very demanding. If I’m honest, you push yourself to the limit every time you harvest, because every harvest and every vintage is different. The wines from previous vintages are stored in the cellar of the winery. And here it becomes somehow romantic again. Quiet music sounds from hidden speakers.
24 hours, every day, every night. The light is also dimmed, as if there is no hustle and bustle. Torben Endrici is certain that what is good for you cannot be bad for the wine . If the wine grows in an atmosphere and the music is harmonious, then there is also a harmonious product
That has grown up without, for example, aggression. That’s why we only play jazz or classical music. Does the music really have an influence on the taste of the wine? There is no doubt that certain melodies touch people deeply . The Paneveggio Natural Park is also about music,
About very special sounds that apparently only exist here. * orchestral music * The sounding forest “Il bosco che Suona” is also what the area in Val die Fiemme is called. This is the territory of forester Girolamo Scarian. * Music continues. * The wood of the red fir trees from Paneveggio
Has been used for centuries to make the best musical instruments. Stradivari is said to have chosen the special tonewood for his famous violins. (in Italian) I think it’s nice when violin makers choose the wood here. I then think that one day it will be turned into a violin and perhaps it will be
Played in an orchestra somewhere in the most remote places. The treasures of the forest are in the xylotheka, a kind of library for the best woods . Selected logs that may one day become valuable musical instruments. The regularity of the annual rings, the flexibility and the right tone of the wood are crucial.
There are only a few forests in all of Europe where trees grow from which soundwood can be obtained. The wood must have certain properties. It must only be light in weight and must be resilient and elastic. Irregularities would affect the sound of the instrument, as would areas with resin.
But the history of the region also has its traces left in the centuries-old trees. It is not uncommon for us to find bomb fragments or rifle bullets from the First World War in the wood. Precisely because the trees are already very old when we cut them down.
The bullets and splinters that hit the tree have grown into the wood over the many years. You only see them when we cut down the tree and then work with the trunk. The sounding forest also tells people its story. At the end of summer, the area around Val di Fassa,
Right in the heart of the Dolomites, becomes a stage. Early in the morning people make their way up to the festival of the most beautiful mountains “I suoni della Dolomiti”, the sounds of the Dolomites. Cristofero Debertol is also on the move. He lives down in the valley of Canazei.
He just has to get up here at the end of the summer. I studied in Germany for a year and a half and also in England, but these mountains simply call to me and I always enjoy coming here. The route takes two hours up into the mountains where the concert takes place.
The landscape and nature – the route is already part of the experience and is intended to get you in the mood for the sounds of the Dolomites. * Bells ring * The festival has been around since 1995 and every year more and more visitors come,
Even if the last few meters are really strenuous. It’s two hours. But you leave with a smile and everyone is happy, that’s true. The fresh air, the panorama – a call to the mountains! * Jazz music * More than 1000 people set out on this Sunday at the end of September .
The concert is free, the price is promotion. The organizers want to use the festival to raise awareness among people. To respect nature more again, to recognize the beauty of the landscape, to perceive its sounds and thus to protect this unique backdrop. The sun cooperated, which is very important.
But when you run into the mountains, everyone is happy. I live here, but there is always something new. Every day is something new, the colors, the backgrounds, it’s always super beautiful. * calm jazz music * I feel comfortable here. It is my home, my house. * Folk music * Copyright subtitles: hr 2023

😀
