The town of Viareggio in Tuscany has been organising one of the most spectacular Italian carnivals for 150 years. The seaside resort is home to one of the most impressive street festivals in Italy, the famous Viareggio Carnival on the Versilia Coast in Tuscany. Italy’s Viareggio Carnival is held annually since the first parade in 1873, with charming parades of huge and very colorful allegorical floats along the seaside Promenade of Viareggio (Viali a Mare). The Carnival in the Tuscan town on Italy’s northern Mediterranean coast is now one of Italy’s most popular carnivals, renowned for its giant floats of more than 20 meters high and 12 meters wide presenting incredible technical and artistic creations deeply rooted in the traditions of the local people. The major topical issues are presented with humor at the Viareggio Carnival through the oversized papier-mâché characters and the beautiful costumes worn by the thousands of dressed-up figures who dance on the floats. Often, teenagers are attracted by trecherous situations that – like Harpies – first seduce them and later reveal their monstrous nature. Thus, ” don’t get distracted by anything; wait and wait some more, stay in silence and listen to your heart. And when it speaks, get up and go where it tells you to”.
