Boat Tour Dufour 470 vs Bavaria C45 – Sailing PYTISS – Episode 5
Hey everyone, welcome back to sailing pytiss. Thanks for tuning in. Don’t forget to like and subscribe. Today we’re at the Vancouver Boat Show 2024 and we are checking out two really cool boats. A beautiful Dufour 470. And an equally beautiful Bavaria C45 Let’s get right into it.
Well, hello everyone. We’re here today at the boat show with Max from Yacht Sales West How are you doing, Max? Yeah, another great morning. Great fun. I mean, this is really boat show season for us. My wife was at the Toronto show. I’m doing Vancouver, Seattle, Miami, and then
I’m back for a bit in like the Mets. So yeah, it’s definitely boat show season. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself, about your sailing experience? Yeah, for sure. I kind of fell into this by accident. I was in the military for 23 years, retired as an engineer. Lieutenant
Colonel decided we want to do something different with our kids. And we went cruising for 7 1/2 ye re ars, 36,000 miles. We left, the kids were six and eight that came back. Thewere 1614
And six. So you’ll notice something that we added a kid. So our youngest was born in Mexico spent 7 1/2 ye and then he had a six month shot in French Polynesia and he turned 1 just as we arrived in New Zealand. So hea rs. 36,000 miles bouncing around the South
Pacific to Micronesia, pollution bearing sea, all that good stuff, Alaska and home. We then got back and realized that we needed to do that kind of annoying adult thing of getting a job. So we started flowing to marine services, helping people get ready to go off for cruising and managing marine
Projects, and then got Southwest, asked if I would join them and so that’s been great fun. Now I get to help other people launch off on their own adventures. Yeah. So this we’re seeing this boat first is before you do before 470 and it’s kind of fun because this is actually a privately
Owned boat. It’s in charter with Northwest Explorations. And they’d be nice enough to let us have the boat back because the Seattle show is running at the same time. So we have a new one of these sitting in Seattle and we’ve got this loaner. So this is one of the early
Ones we brought in. It’s had a bit of living, but you see, if it stood up pretty well, Yeah. So yeah, let’s start. Come along. Let’s take a look at this beauty. Yeah. Tell us a little bit about the cockpit and the health station and all that. Absolutely. I mean, quite a
Change in boats. Over the years they’ve realized that boats need to be more comfortable. They’re not just as hardcore offshore machine. It’s people’s homes and people’s cottage. Like comparing this boat to my Fluenta. Whether it’s uncomfortable cockpit, you know, we’re starting to get to kind of catamaran
Levels of comfort here. The sailing and the non sailing folks have some separation, easy to have guests. You’ve got twin Helms, you got great visibility no matter what point of sale, no matter what sales you’ve got up. You got a full set of electronics, bow thruster, you
Know, all that great stuff, awesome sight lines. And then where it makes sense, we’ve got some electric winches. All of that’s done custom depending on what what folks want to do and how hard they want to work. Yeah, I see that it’s very accessible to manage the lines both when
At the helm and also from here. Yeah, I mean, the nice thing with the 470 and the 5:30 is you’ve got a nice easy walkway. So it’s not a big deal to go up forward and check on things to manage the sale plan and all of that. Are
There any lines that you have to like go to the mass or go forward when you’re sailing? No. So all the all the lines on all these modern boats, boats are brought out. And in fact, for most part, we want most of those lines to be
Back here by the helm, so it’s very easy to single hand even though it’s a 47 foot boat. Gorgeous, yeah. Let’s take a look. Yeah, I think this is the first time you’ve been in here, right? Yeah. Yeah, it’s a totally different look. One of the do four things
Is this forward galley and what it does. One, it makes a great practical galley with lots of space. Two people can work together, lots of refrigeration, but it also opens up all the space here for socializing, hanging out. It also means that people are coming and going.
They’re not going through the galley to to get to the cockpit. Some people like that, others don’t. You know so much of it’s personal choice and that’s why it’s fun to have the different folks and be able to compare and contrast. Yeah, it’s really nice. Having the galley
There, I think it’s the first time this is. I haven’t seen this before. It’s it’s really interesting. Well, the boat needs to be to a certain size for that to work right, Enable architects and designers. You know, if it’s too small of a boat, there’s not a lot of creativity there for
Them because people, the best still have to be a size. The toilet will be besides the the stoves at least. So then what’s leftover to be created? In this case, they’ve got that space to to do that. Lots of headroom. 22 wine racks obviously, yeah. And then two aft
Cabins, yeah, so the guest cabins are aft. Lots of space. You know, sometimes guest cabins have no storage. Case you get lots of storage space. Very nice. Yeah, very. Storage. Oh, that’s also storage. Look at that. Yeah. Yeah. It’s not like the boat I used to race on, you
Know, it was like a little torpedo tube that I would live in and crawl into, which is great offshore, but not very comfortable. Master Cabin is forward. There’s a private all suite, but there’s also you’ll see a private separate shower room. Separate shower room from the bathroom, of course. Wow.
So a partial walk around, lots of lights, You can sit in bed with a book and you can still see outside. 2 opening hatches. Great, you know, ventilation, great natural light. And then you have the private en suite which is fairly normal. But then you’ve got this huge shower area.
Lots of space, room to shower with a friend, save water. That is amazing. And that’s the only stuff. The other one, the other one has a shower as well. It’s not as luxury as that. Oh, nice. Yeah. Yeah, for the guests. It’s amazing how much space they are
Able to put in these bolts now compared to like old 47 floater. Oh yeah ’cause my my own personal vote is 47, but it’s a 1982 so you have very much different, much heavier. This boat sails really well in light air. You know, my boat needs a
Bunch of wind to get moving. Yeah, it’s just a very different focus. It’s very comfortable. Should we look at something exciting with the engines? Yeah, let’s look at how would you do maintenance on this thing. Easy. This pops up the side access panel. You know everything you need is right
There and super simple to work on. Very few issues with these engines. Lots of space, yeah. And I see that there’s hatches everywhere. Are all of these stores or? Yeah. So this is what most probably the most important storage. The wine rack. Sadly empty at the moment. Like storage here and
Over there and one of the things you need to look at in modern boat, sometimes they try to make them seem bigger by getting rid of those the the eye level storage, but then you have some storage. In this case they managed to retain that and
You still have, you know, lots of space. And again, lots of lights, opening hatches and then there’s lines for everything so that if you are wanting it cooler or darker, you’ve got that option. Would it be like, yeah. So quite often folks don’t have like a dedicated NAV
Station, like about the only time I’m drawing on charts these days if I’m teaching a navigation course. So quite often folks will do their work at that. The main table and folks are a collection of compromises. So, you know, do you want that dedicated chart table or do you
Want more learning space? And for some people, they have to have a charter table. Fair enough. And that’s why we have different folks. Does does that table?Come down as well makes a birth as well, awesome for kids especially. Some folks have put a big TV up there, so if it’s like a rainy
Day, which happens sometimes in BC, the kids can bunk down here and they’ve got a TV there. Even if the boat rocking and rolling, they got a nice that’s amazing. Lots of space to have to cook. And this is the thread, right? That’s the fridge, then that’s
Fridges as well over here. You have fridge and freezer there And then your, your whiskey, Does the boat have an inverter? It does, yeah. And we do a lot of stuff custom, so. Especially somebody’s ordering a boat in. There’s like 9 pages of options. So we sit down
With them and I would like to get an understanding what do they want to do with the boat first, right? A vote that’s going to be just cruising the Gulf Islands and desolation is different than a boat that’s going to go to Alaska, which is different than a boat that’s
Going to go to the South Pacific. So we sit down, get understanding what they want to do, then talk about which boat and then go through the 9 pages of options and then we do so much custom work after. Yeah, maybe this, maybe we’ll come to you in a couple of years.
Yay. Yeah, I get another trip to France. Triple fast. Yeah, that was good. Awesome. Yeah. Great boat. Yeah, I’m already, well, I’m already sold. Hard to go back to our little Catalina after this. So where would you put the dinghy on such a boat?So we’re good on this one a bit
There an option, we have a tractable damage, these pull out up and out and extend and like a lot of things was talked about, you know boat selection. Same with the options. It all depends on what you’re going to go do if you’re going to sail locally. You’re
Happy with a small dingy, small outboard. This is an awesome solution. Very discreet it. You know you’re not paying for extra length of the dock, but there is a weight limit. So if you’re looking to do longer range trips, you want a big thing to do, a tight surfer,
Something like that. Then we do custom davits to fit whatever size can you you’re looking to use or outboard lifts or lots of solutions. But basically look at what’s the problem and then how do we, how do we solve it. The other thing that really is a big change from like an old
Boat like Fluenta is a full ramp. It’s so easy to come and go. And he did come in and out of the dinghy it, you know, it’s just, it’s such a game changer. Then, you know, coming alongside on a rocky rolling boat and then of
Course this all falls up to be nice and secure. Of course, while you’re at anchor, you’ve got all this extra space and that we’ve got a wet bar, so you’ve got a sink and a plunger grill so you can do a lot of your cooking out
Here. Keeps the heat out of the boat in the summer, keeps the smell out of the boat, makes you part of the, you know, the socializing that’s going on here. So pretty. Pretty cool. That’s awesome. All right, perfect. So, yeah, let’s head to the next vote. All righty. Here we are
On the Bavaria C45, similar size to the new 4470 German manufacturers, Bavaria. We were the company that brought Bavaria into North America about 20 years ago. So yeah, we’re pretty proud of these boats. We actually just sold two of these to the Navy to use a sail training vessel. So they’re good,
Robust boats and easy to sell. Yeah. Wet bar. Again, it just makes the boat that much bigger. It’s a great place to cook while you’re entertaining your guests. And the jewel helm is pretty standard now on on water fields, yeah, because I mean you’re bringing the, the, the beam,
They’re not all that much beam here, but the beam is coming a lot further aft and then if you still want to be able to, to see your sail trim. See other vessels, see the wind, you know, you’ve got to be able to move back and forth, go
Back to those single helm boats, the great big helm that was great and looked really cool, but a lot of that was just to get a better view of the sale. Be able to go to the banana was a big week so that you could stand on that side of the
Week now coming, but now we’re coming and going from the stern. It’s hard to get around those and they’re awkward as they get bigger. Then you need a little foot well for them, which stuff gets trapped in the hose can get trapped in. This is a much more elegant solution and
Appropriate for this kind of shape of boat. Yeah, I just found this J boat here that has one of those big single steering wheel. You can see. It’s really narrow to get past on the side, so that explains why there’s more and more boats going for Dual Health Station Max. I’m noticing
This boat is very different looking than the other boat because the other boat had. What looked like a rule, we call it a Yeah, so that was a privately owned boat. We never do the Bimini or the canvas, the Bimini, the connector, the Dodger until we already
Have a fire. Everybody has a different idea of how the canvas should be done. People come in different shapes and sizes. Sometimes we integrate solar into it. So we wait till we have a buyer for the boat and then we sit with them. We look at other boats, we sketch out ideas
And then we sit on the boat and we actually have a mock up. The last thing you want to do is, you know, purchase something like this. Get to the helm and find out you’re staring at it. You know, an inch and a quarter stainless steel bar. Because you’re high
So then you want to stuff antenna can see stuff and and that’s why we do it custom even different colours. How much solar like if you’re staying local maybe you don’t need lots of solar you’re doing a big trip to the South Pacific. Yeah we’re going to cram in as much solar and
All the solar controllers and wire runs and everything as we can to make it make it appropriate for how you’re going to use your boat. And also here all the lines are running back of course. Yeah very much of the C45, all the lines are aft. So again if you’ve got guests
Kids, folks that are just not part of the sailing action. Like an academorand they can stay up here. And and they’re not in the way nobody’s getting cloned with a winch handle in the head. No blood on the teeth. Well, let’s take a look underneath. Wow, so something different again.
Similar sized boat, different styling, different layouts, very different. Yeah, it’s a different wood colour because we have the choices of the wood colours, the fiber colours. I mean, it’s funny, as an engineer I’m happy to talk about rigging and engines and stuff, but I do struggle. I’m still not even sure what Roubini
Beige is. But yeah, there’s so many choices when it comes to the interior fit out. We have a more traditional galley by the helm. Again, that’s a little easier if you’re passing food up into the cockpit and you’re a little closer to the centre of the boat.
So again, people like that if you’re going offshore, tons of prep space, you know, tons of refrigeration, 33 refrigerators, 3 cabin again. Still 2 heads separate shower compartment. So you’re you’re getting all of that. It’s just a little different layout. And it’s fun when I show these boats because sometimes people are like
This is the right answer and other times people are on the other one. Great answer. Yeah, so a lot of it comes down to personal choice. I love the the handful here. Yeah, that’s really nice. In case it’s Rolly. Yeah. Yeah. Can still hold on to something.
Another fun thing doing new boats is there’s so many different configurations, especially as the boats get bigger. So for the Navy sail training vessels, we’ve got to configure for the maximum number of people on board so they can do like Van Isles and Victoria Maui’s. We kept it
As simple as possible with all all the little fruit fruity leather bits, but in this one because it’s meant for a private individual. We’ve done things like this is a massive storage locker. Done on the previous one is we put a heater vent into it and that way you can
Put your wet gear in there and it dries nice. On other ones, we’ve done it where this is another shower compartment connected to this guest head and then on the Navy boat this is buck cabins. Oh, there’s. And so you got a normal, conventional wet head in here
Because you still got the full on, you know, separate dedicated shower board. On the other one. Shall we look at the? Wow, look at the all the counter space, yeah. Yeah, you’ve done lots of. Lots of refrigeration. And then you’ve got a third one, top loading, more conventional one over
There. Lots of food. And of course, like pressurized water and all those hot water. Yeah. Wow. Well, look at this master bedroom. So again, partial walk around. Got Great Hall windows. You can sit in bed, seeout. Two opening hatches. Complete Blackout and blinds if you want more privacy. And then another dedicated.
Rubber ducky not included. And then a dedicated toilet. Lots of storage. Another. And then the more storage. The head. And then I would assume engine compartment back here again, good access there. So just lift up. Yeah, just lift it up. It’s on or struts, so it’s a big deal.
Began 80 horse Yanmar and there we upgraded the engine. Nice. And then lots of additional hatches in the floor to access things. I mean some of it’s used like by systems, so you want to keep the weight low so the batteries are down here, lots of space
For extra ones. How would you open one of these hutches? They don’t usually they have like the little. Magic. So, so magic. Ohh there you go right? Nice. That makes them look even. Places to catch dirt and trip on and, you know, fail. Sometimes they they, you
Know, get stuck or whatever. So that’s nice and cool. I would make sure you have a spare. They do go missing, I can imagine. That’s really, really awesome. Thank you so much, Max. No, you’re welcome. For showing us these two boats. That’s fun. That’s a fun part of
The job. Yeah. Check out yacht sales list for more boats. And if you need any help figuring out what’s right for you, talk to Max. Yeah. Thank you, Max. You’re welcome. Thank you so much. Yeah, this is really fun. Thank you guys for watching our very first boat tour.
