Cost of Living in Kuala Lumpur

Hey this is Dan of vagabon away here from po Aventure and we’re in one of the most famous places in the world quala lumur the petronis tower yeah and uh Malaysia is an amazing place I mean look look at this let me just show you all these buildings around here

360 okay 360 crazy huh yeah I love the the the building over there with the trees oh yeah with the with the plants and stuff yeah look at that that’s a Condo building and just plants hanging down on the outside in this report I will share koala lumur Malaysia rents utilities groceries restaurants

Transportation and other expenses for low to Middle range living costs for koala lumur Malaysia then I will share my desirability factors for retiring in quala lumur such as walkability Internet food weather things to do social considerations real estate expa community and healthc care but why

Should you listen to me I first came to Malaysia in 2016 on a Visa Run from Thailand while in Malaysia I met a fashion runway model named Chung Hoy of hobo Ventures she’s been traveling the world with me since 2017 today I now have 991 videos showing you the best places

To retire cheap in Paradise overseas you can browse through my videos with our feet on the ground all over the world my videos are organized by country at Vagabond Awake YouTube channel on playlist tab chun’s videos are at the hobo Ventures you YouTube channel because Chung is from Malaysia and we

Visit her family periodically I’ve spent more time here over the last seven years than any other country we have been all over Malaysia Malaysia is sandwiched between Thailand and Singapore koala lumur the capital of Malaysia is in Western Malaysia Western Malaysia is also known as Peninsular Malaysia Eastern Malaysia runs along the

North end of one of the largest islands in the world called Borneo we’ve put our feet on the ground all over Malaysia doing videos uh and writing retired cheap reports for koala lumur panang Mala IO Lanka the parthian islands sabba SIU and Sarawak Malaysia but today we’re reporting on quala lumur Malaysia first

I’ll share a range of living cost estimates from low to Middle for qual ort and then I’ll share my retirement desirability scores okay estimated cost of living in kumur Malaysia here’s my estimated cost of living converted into US doll if the two of us moved to guala

Lumur Malaysia year round on a tight budget we’ll also include more typical expenses we’ve heard from other expats to give you another data point okay rents I found the above unfurnished twostory one-bedroom condo for rent for 2, ring it per month which is $418 US per month in jalon aong in one

Of our favorite buildings called m city it’s 9910 Square ft and has an incredible swimming pool and gym that is the 12 Monon rental rate here’s another one-bedroom condo for rent I like this one even more because it has a balcony with sliding glass doors and is completely furnished for 2,000 ring it

Per month which is $418 per month here is the process we use to find great Apartments so we will show you a table of all the expenses in a moment we’ll use 420 per month for our lower rent estimate and 600 per month for the middle cost of living estimate

For expats who may want more space okay utility we estimate that the yearr round average for our utilities would be about $80 us per month the utilities would be more for expats that rent the larger space or about $130 per month groceries when we slow travel the world we

Normally shop only in wet markets to save money in fact there’s a great wet Market only about 10 minutes drive from the onong area of K where we normally stay but we’ve fallen in love with this family-owned grocery store that’s only about 6 minutes walk from where we stay

In onong we estimate about 300 per month for groceries other xats are likely to buy more expensive imported Foods in the larger expat style grocery store in the area uh or around 400 per month on groceries restaurants we would go out to eat two or three times per week in quala

Lumpur about half the time in local restaurants average averaging about $3.50 per meal us per person and an additional uh time per week in the xat style restaurants for about $8 per meal per person if you add that up we would spend about $40 per per week or $160 per month in

Restaurants for the two of us other expats are likely to eat more western style Foods in expensive expat restaurants and less in the local style restaurants so they would likely spend about $240 a month for two people cell phone data the cost to recharge our prepaid smartphone service was about $12 per

Month my Android phone will act as a hotspot so we can both be on the internet at the same time when we are out of the house together other xack couples are likely to buy two prepaid SIM cards so they would spend about $24 per month laundry our apartments in K

Almost always have clothes washing machines and people hang dry their clothes in Southeast Asia since the laundry detergents included on our grocery bill there is no additional expense for laundry drinking water most furnished apartments in KL now have water dispensers so we would pay nothing for water here internet 100 megabits per

Second up and down is about 130 ring it per month or 27 USD and for inhome Wi-Fi transportation we end up taking grab taxi about twice per week for about four us each way or about $8 round trip each time we also walk everywhere in this neighborhood and

We can take the bus for almost free to KLCC Sera mall where we can take the subway all over the city so we estimate about 80 USD per month for the two of us for transportation xats might walk less and spend more on Transportation so we’ll

Estimate 100 up to 120 per month for them alcohol which is optional of course local beer in local bars and restaurants are about $4 us per beer about $2 Us in convenience stores and $167 in grocery stores so we would spend about 160 per month on alcohol for the two of us many

Other Pats would spend a higher amount for imported foreign or craft beers in expat bars and stores so about 240 us per month for two people assuming they’re not into imported whiskey or wine the sky would be the limit then okay entertainment of course which is optional we would budget about 200 per

Month for entertainment for the two of us we generally enjoy doing more do-it-yourself kinds of entertainment so expats would spend a little more maybe 300 per month for two of for the two of them okay let’s add it all up rent the lower rent is 420 utilities 80 groceries

300 restaurants 160 sell data 12 internet 27 Transportation $80 per month add that up and it’s ,79 per month add $150 for optional alcohol you’re at $1,229 per month at200 for entertainment and you’re at $1,429 per month now if we look at the uh basic cost for the middle uh Which is

Higher than then our low would be $1,541 per month if you add alcohol to that and entertainment uh the middle cost would be about $2,141 per month the above lower estimated cost of living would be if the two of us lived in quala lur on a tight

Budget the middle estimate is just an example of what other expats might spend if they moved here and had more discretionary income to understand what it would cost you to live here you must put your feet on the ground and see how you would choose to live eat and

Entertain yourself and add it all up it doesn’t matter what anyone else spends because we are all different just like in your home country if you would like to learn how I fired my boss and traveled the world for 16 years and how I pay for things grab a free copy of my

Ebook Okay koala lumur Malaysia livability factors before you move anywhere outside your home country make sure to create a list of the things that you must have for your happy retirement here are my livability factors and I’ll rank each as high medium or low before assigning an overall retirement desirability score to qual

Lumur walkability I would say high this one will need a little explanation at first you may think this is a place you’ll need to have a car but there are several neighborhoods in KL where you could live without ever having to get in a car three examples would be the

Petronis tower area the buket bentang area and bangsar in fact there is even a covered air conditioned walk way between the petronis tower area and buket bente you can also take the subway from the petronis towers to bip Pang and bangsar once in any of these three areas your

Walking distance to all Necessities like movies malls restaurants grocery stores from super expensive to more affordable are all within walking distance in in each neighborhood plus K has an amazing transportation system that you can access using Google Maps you could easily live here without buying a car

Okay internet I would say hi koala lur has great internet speeds for very little money I used the AT&T speed test on the wireless router in our apartment and it registered registered 109 megabits per second up and down that’s going to be fast enough for almost

Anyone food I would say hi we normally stay in the galon onong area of KL there is a high-end Village Grocery in the neighborhood and we shop there if we need something quick but if we are shopping for a few days worth of groceries we shop at either of these two

Grocery stores that have lower prices and almost as good a selection uh links provided and note that alcohol and beer and wine is heavily taxed here so that’s about the only thing that you’re going to see is much more expensive than most of Southeast Asia okay weather the weather is fairly consistent

And hot in koala lmour year round daily highs range very little from about 89 F which is 32 cels in December up to 92 fah which is 33 cels in May the nightly lows range from 73 fahit which is 23 celus in December to 76 fahit which is

24 celsus in May the rainy season is October through December when rains 13 to 16 days of the month the rest of the year it rains about 10 days per month things to do I would say hi if you’re interested in City Life qualm por has everything you will need except the

Sexually charged atmosphere you’ll find in places like Bangkok it’s a more conservative country they have Symphony live music Performing Arts there are literally hundreds of great restaurants with foods from all over the the world koala lur has an amazing international airport so all of Southeast Asia and the

World is reasonably priced flights away quala Lumpur has beautiful parks and amazing shopping malls people come from all over the world to shop here all of the most exclusive designer brands are in the Pavilion and KLCC Seria malls okay social considerations it seems that everywhere you go here people speak

English it was a former English colony and they continued to teach English in schools the main local language is called Malay there are three major ethnic groups here Malay Chinese and Indian and all three groups speak their ethnic language and most also speak at least some English and a little bit of

Each other’s ethnic languages the people are very friendly and nice I don’t believe you will face any additional challenges because you are a foreigner here okay expat Community you’ll see expats from all over the world here but it is still relatively undiscovered by westerners as compared to Thailand or

The Philippines or Bali Indonesia for that matter here are three Facebook pages that cater to expats from overseas these online expat communities are great for learning all about things that expats want to learn when they first move overseas they are also great sources for finding people to associate

With from other countries okay medical Malaysia is one of the better medical tourism countries in the world in my opinion they have both great health care here and at reasonable prices when you are first new overseas you may want to go to hospitals like Glenn Eagles or Prince Court Medical Center which are

Kind of like premium hospitals but after you realize that the average Hospital Medical Care here is probably as good as your home country then you may want to consider going to more Blue Collar type hospitals which may may save you a little bit of money okay tourist visas foreigners from many Western countries

Are given three-month Visa exemption when they enter Malaysia in many parts of Southeast Asia you can just do a Visa Run to get additional time but Malaysia has started to crack down on Visa runs the best I can tell you after take talking to several people who have done

It and watch what happens with myself if you decide to do a Visa run after your first 90-day exemption you should stay out of Malaysia at least 90 days before attempting a re-entry it’s just not clear that they’ll allow you back in as easily as they used to okay retirement

Visa Malaysia has 13 states and three Federal territories iies two of those States saba and sarok have reserved the right to set their own terms for retirement visas in the Constitution that means that there are three different retirement visas you can apply for in the country of a Malaysia which

You can read uh more details about I provide a link here but basically Sabas State retirement Visa you have to complete and submit the required applications and documents you have to deposit 200 ,000 ring which is $42,000 in a Malaysian Bank you have to spend at least 30 days per year in SAA

It is initially issued with a 5-year term renewable for 5 years you would also need a certificate of good standing from your home country and a clean bill of health okay next up the sarok state retirement Visa you have to complete and submit the required application and documents you have to deposit 150,000

Ring it or 30 $2,000 in a Malaysian bank and proof of 7,000 ring or $1,500 US income per month you have to spend at least 30 days per year in saralk you would also need a certificate of good standing from your home country and a clean bill of health next up is

Peninsula Malaysia retirement Visa you have to complete and submit the required application and documents you have to deposit 1 million ring or 210,000 us in a Malay Malaysian bank but no proof of monthly income you have to spend at least 90 days per year in Peninsular Malaysia you would also need a

Certificate of good standing from your home country and a clean bill of health there are also some VIP retirement visas for peninsula Malaysia which we will not cover here because they’re so much more expensive since you’re not required to live in any of these states for the

Entire year you may wonder if you’re allowed to live in other parts of Malaysia during the other parts of the air I have not found a direct answer to that question but I can tell you that when we flew from Saba or saralk to Peninsular Malaysia since that’s not an

International flight it’s domestic immigration in Peninsular Malaysia did not ask to see our passport at all upon entry it seemed to be just like when you fly between US states or between countries uh in Europe hopefully one day they’ll clear this up real estate foreigners can Own 100% of a

Residence in Malaysia so long as the purchase price is over 1 million which is 210,000 us the weird thing is the rents are so low here that it might be smarter to rent than buy to give you an example a place that we know of that’s renting for about 700 per month sells

For about $250,000 us if you keep that 250 in the market instead of buying the place and you get an average of 6% return you’ll make twice as much in the market as the rent you would be saving by buying plus I do not recommend buying until you have been

Here for at least two years okay quala lur overall desirability score high I could see myself living in quala lur the costs are higher than other parts of Malaysia but everywhere else in Malaysia seems a little rule for for me other than maybe Georgetown panang also most of Malaysia feels a little conservative

For my tastes KL and Georgetown panang Malaysia are more open-minded and accepting of diverse ideas okay my three favorite neighborhoods to live in koala lumur Jalan Aang is where we normally stay when we are in koala lumur it just seems to be a good fit for us it’s beautiful

It’s close to to many beautiful things and we can walk everywhere another great neighborhood we like is called bukit bang it’s a great place to stay if you like more energy or high energy night life and a younger crazy feeling to it and then there’s bankar which is a great

Area when you will find very successful families and singles but it costs more for the same reason what would it cost you to live in qual Mur to get a better understanding of things you should add to our estimated cost of living watch this video nine reasons you can’t retire

On a th000 a month most people will likely be unable to retire on the lower range estimate above I give example reasons why in this report plus this other report explains how to avoid coming home early with your tail between your legs also if you’re going to be try

To retire cheap offshore make sure to read my report the two biggest risks of retiring early for cheap offshore which explains why you should have emergency funds available for unexpectedly large expenses you should also add anything to the above table that you spend money on in your home country that’s not itemized

In the above table presumably you find those things necessary in life to do that visit numo qual lur and add anything not mentioned in the table never move anywhere until you have visited first personally to verify the living cost for your lifestyle and needs I’m not guaranteeing these prices these

Are just my notes and estimates from the time of my visit and this post your cost will likely be drastically different depending on your lifestyle and the time since this post many of the expats we meet living overseas are self-insured for medical care that means that not everyone buys health insurance when they

Move overseas that probably sounds crazy to many of you I didn’t carry Medical insurance for most of my first 177 years living overseas but last year I bought medical insurance if you’re wondering what it costs and what it covers watch my medical insurance video at this link

This is not an affiliate link more typical expats living costs in Malaysia range from about 1,500 to 4,000 per month but people spending that much often have higher savings incomes or pensions they often report spending more on entertainment eating out more traveling and alcohol many also have more expensive cars houses or apartments

Thanks for watching my video click the video in the upper right hand corner of your screen right now to watch all of the other places we’ve been in Malaysia and what they cost to live hey if you liked our video please like comment or subscribe any of that would help our

What kinds of risks are you taking if you move overseas?

    https://vagabondbuddha.com/our-liability-disclaimer-the-risk-is-on-you/

  2. People often forget these are basic living costs, medical insurance is vital for example. In KL a car is essential long term as well, as very frustrating without one especially in expat areas such as Mont Kiara where public transport basically doesn't exist.

I would say KL isn't a great retirement city, I loved being there for work 8 years, but for retirement 'hell no'. Malacca or Penang are better for that.

Also don't forget insane fx fluctuations – I went their first at 3.3 RM to USD. Been 4.7 to dollar recently. Great for dollar earning retires, nor RM earners.

Also Malaysian government is saying "no poor retirees" and the MM2H requirements are now insanely high. PR with a 2 million dollar investment is now cheaper in effect!

You BTW cannot use the East Malaysia MM2H to stay in the mainland. The mainland info given is 100% wrong!

  3. At the moment, the Peninsular retirement visas programme (MM2H) is suspended. Sarawak retirement visas (S-MM2H) are taking 15 months to process. Sabah retirement visas do not exist.

  4. Visited KL last December for the first time. My hotel (Traders) was straight across from the Towers ๐Ÿ˜‚ spent a few days hanging around with a Malaysian friend as a guide. KL was so cheap, I found it much cheaper than Thailand. The city itself was a bit overwhelming at first so I will need to come back for a further visit (planned) and I am going to Langkawi this coming June for a visit as well. It is certainly a compelling argument for a long stay location when I retire later this year. Great vlog folks

  5. Any idea about how much medical insurance would add to the bill (for those of us who want it)? Also, do you have thoughts on traveling with a back pack vs a rolling suitcase?

  6. Great channel, just watched a couple of the Vietnam vids from a couple weeks ago, one thing I didn't catch if it was talked about was what about language barriers if one doesn't speak the language

  7. Yesterday was the first time I watched one of your videos and I enjoyed it so much I have been binge watching nearly all day today. I see myself back in VN or KL within the next year. I'm not a stranger to Asia but I am learning a great deal from your videos that I didn't know.

  8. Hi Dan I enjoy your videos. We are heading to Kuala Lumpur next week, then hope to peel off to Georgetown. Mostly because of your videos. Question about tipping. Whats customary. We live in Hawaii, so food is really expensinve. Were used to tipping a lot. If I got a nice 3.00 meal, I'd be inclined to tip a ton, since the Hawaiian equivelent would be a lot more. Is there something thats customary? Thanks in advance,
    Jim

  9. Hello Dan and thank you for all the information you put out in your videos. I sincerely appreciate it. I hope you won't delete this comment as I really want to caution those visiting or living in Kuala Lumpur to avoid Gleneagles especially the ER as I had very very substandard care there and at a high cost. Additionally had quite a struggle to get proper paperwork for my insurance (as they didn't provide proper care). I do hope the other hospitals are better!

  10. In these uncertain times, it's more important than ever to have a solid understanding of how to manage your finances, invest wisely and navigate economic downturns.
