Bremen se encuentra en el noroeste de Alemania, a orillas del río Weser, que fluye íntegramente por el país hasta desembocar en el mar del Norte. La ciudad está rodeada por el estado de Baja Sajonia, y forma junto con el puerto de Bremerhaven, a unos 60 km al noroeste, la Ciudad Libre Hanseática de Bremen, o Estado de Bremen. Este es el nombre oficial que recibe este estado federado, que tiene una autonomía especial dentro de Alemania y que es el más pequeño del país, con solo 326 km² de superficie y unos 680 000 habitantes.
Bremen fue fundada en el siglo VIII por Carlomagno, quien estableció un obispado en la zona para cristianizar a los pueblos paganos del norte de Europa. El obispo de Bremen llegó a tener una gran influencia política y religiosa, y en el siglo XI se convirtió en arzobispo, con jurisdicción sobre toda Escandinavia, Islandia y Groenlandia. Bremen también se benefició de su situación estratégica en el río Weser, que le permitió desarrollar un floreciente comercio con otras ciudades del norte de Europa y del mar Báltico. El Ayuntamiento alberga en su interior la famosa Bremische Ratskeller, una bodega que data de 1405 y que tiene una de las colecciones de vinos más antiguas y grandes del mundo. El Ayuntamiento y la estatua de Rolando, que se encuentra frente a él, fueron declarados Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 2004, por ser un símbolo de la libertad y la soberanía de la ciudad.
Otro de los atractivos de la Plaza del Mercado es la estatua de los músicos de Bremen, que representa a un burro, un perro, un gato y un gallo, los protagonistas de un famoso cuento de los hermanos Grimm. Según la leyenda, estos cuatro animales, que habían sido maltratados por sus dueños, decidieron escapar y buscar una vida mejor en Bremen, donde querían convertirse en músicos. Por el camino, se encontraron con una casa de ladrones, a la que asustaron con sus ruidos y de la que se apoderaron. Sin embargo, nunca llegaron a Bremen, sino que se quedaron a vivir en la casa. La estatua de los músicos de Bremen es uno de los símbolos más queridos de la ciudad, y se dice que si se tocan las patas delanteras del burro y se pide un deseo, este se cumplirá.
Bremen también tiene otros lugares de interés que merece la pena visitar, como el Schnoor, el barrio más antiguo y pintoresco de la ciudad, donde se pueden ver casas de los siglos XV y XVI, que albergan tiendas, cafés y restaurantes. El Schnoor debe su nombre a la palabra alemana Schnur, que significa cuerda, ya que en este barrio vivían antiguamente los fabricantes de cuerdas y redes para los barcos. Otro lugar interesante es el Böttcherstrasse, una calle peatonal que conecta la Plaza del Mercado con el río Weser, y que está llena de edificios de estilo expresionista, construidos en la década de 1920 por el comerciante y mecenas Ludwig Roselius. En esta calle se pueden visitar el Museo Paula Modersohn-Becker, dedicado a la pintora expresionista, y la Casa de Glockenspiel, que tiene un carillón de 30 campanas de porcelana que suenan cada hora.
