Belarus, officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. With an area of 207,600 square kilometers and a population of 9.2 million, it’s the 13th-largest and 20th-most populous country in Europe. Historically, it has been under various states’ control, including Kievan Rus’, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Russian Empire. After tumultuous events including World War II, it became a founding member of the United Nations. Belarus declared sovereignty in 1990 and gained independence in 1991. Since then, it has been led by Alexander Lukashenko, presiding over a highly centralized authoritarian government with limited freedoms. Belarus remains outside the European Union but maintains bilateral relations and participates in various international organizations, including the UN and CIS.
