Monaco dahling? I’d rather be sailing! #65
I let’s stop Monaco baby who have thought we’d take our boat to Monaco this is Intrepid bear a 40ft sailboat off to explore the world with her crew Ian and Kate come aboard and let’s see what’s out [Laughter] there we got a about five or six knots of true wind now from the southwest and we only got about an hour and a half to go so I’m going to be a lazy sailor today just put the head Sail Out just to
Give us a bit of a boost uh cuz we wouldn’t be fully sail fully sailing it 5 knots under both sails so yeah we’re going to be a bit lazy head saale only and uh that’ll give us a boost just release the car let it come back about halfway from where it is
Now jip sheet cars control the angle of the sheet to the sail as a very general rule of thumb the tighter the angle to the wind then the further back the car should be a sheet is the name given to the rope that pulls sails in and out so
That we’ll have to do for now it’s giving us a Boost the BL so just approaching the marina at 20 minutes to go um on um satlite images you can see there are finger Pon Tunes between the births but the instruction say Stern too as per Med moing but that means that’s dropping the dingy and everything so I’m
Hoping we can go bows to with a finger birth along inside of finger birth but again from the satellite image it does look like there maybe some ground lines so they might have a combination of both and but what we’re going to do is leave
The dingy up we’re going to fend at both sides we’ll go in and have a look and hope with the view to going in um bows first so we can leave the Diggy where it Is right power line on when we can please so I got an unusual moing Arrangement here in that we’ve got a finger ponon which is really handy means we don’t have to drop the dingy to reverse into a spot but on a finger pontoon with a ground line uh which is
Unusual never come across that before first time but the finger ponon isn’t really long enough to reach the gate so we have to climb over the side of the boat but at least we didn’t have to drop the dingy so that’s the main thing The principality of Monaco is a tiny sovereign state on the French Riviera it is widely recognized as one of the most expensive and wealthiest places in the world the marina that we were in cap dial was actually still in France however the border with Monaco is right
At the edge of the marina we paid just under €50 a night versus what would have been 140 per night in central Monaco there are no border controls entering Monaco and it’s just a short walk from cap dial This is the marina next to our F font Ville or something like that amazing Cliffs surrounding it and then up on top of those Cliffs that’s where the palace is that we’re heading to this morning um Monte Carlo Palace [Applause] it’s warm now sorry we’d never be eming for yes yeah we’ll never be part of a invading Army in the Mediterranean as a two D this steps like n keep it keep it have It that is Monaco main Harbor supp you like kind of reminds me of jalter a little bit and it’s everything packed into a tiny little space loads of buildings but a bit richer than jalter total square kilometers yeah according to a map thing that Kate had according
To a map that Kate had it’s a 2.1 Square kilm in total which considering we probably walked a kilometer here already it seems doesn’t seem right but The changing of the guards at the palace was a big thing each day which it seems absolutely everyone came to see the palace Square became quite Crowded the the Mone my it’s hard to really sum up Monaco in a short video segment it lives up to his wealthy reputation but it is an interesting place to visit it’s not really our Vibe as we’re not really City people and it is mainly just a city however the old town and Palace are
Pretty there are some peaceful Gardens and it is nestled on a stunning piece of [Applause] coastline heading west from the marina is the stunning Coastline leading out towards cap dial Itself where are we cat Dy cat di right L which translates to garlic so I call it cake garlic this is the actual C dial di garlic cake over there is Monaco we’re going to stay here until Saturday at least there’s a massive mistal blowing through for the next know
How many days four or five days and we should avoid the worst it here so we’re going to hold stay here till Saturday and then work out whether it’s go east or west Ahead of the forecast mral storm clouds re Building C it’s not always sunny in the MS but the first time we’ve seen decent a lot of rain for quite a few weeks and there’s a lot of it Now the rain soon passed that our time in the marina was up we had hoped to extend as the distant mistra was still threatening to send swell into the area but there was no space we slipped the lines and hoped that an Anchorage at bu Suare would provide a comfortable
Night we enjoyed one peaceful night at anchor explored a little and then were’re treated to an impressive firework display but then things took a turn for the worse Just discussing we’ve probably had one of the worst nights on Intrepid bear but we haven’t really told a lot was going on so ask in all about it why are we on the phone Anda why we anchor what’s been going on so there’s big mistal blowing down the coast from
Us so that’s pushing a lot of swell up but there’s also some waves coming the other way the marine and we were in couldn’t keep us for a few more days because they had spaces book and no other Mariners had space uh that we could find so we came out to Anchor here
In bu some May and it was okay for the first night although it’s bit lumpy and it was just settling down and then suddenly we could just literally go to bed and it’s just rolling all over the place um some really big swell coming in from the
Southeast to the point that I think our stern was into it at one point and we slapped so hard on the water that Kate got splashed cuz she sleeps underneath the AR hat but none of the nights since we came out of the marina have been
Great and uh so it’s kind of wearing there the mist’s still blowing and it’s rough out beyond that Headland so we can’t go easily to the west but I’ve just founded the Marina Marina that they were in that we were in and they’ve said we can go back there today um at about
Half 12 so we’ll get off the boat for a bit now and then we’ll go back to a marina for tonight but yeah it doesn’t take many nights of riness for us to get pretty fed up so yeah we’re a bit fed up at the moment one of those life choice
Moments and just lie there last night say I think we had breaking waves around us at one point it felt like cuz cuz we were Stern to the waves which was actually probably better when we were pitching and when we go Beam on and rolling but yeah we’re both quite
Exhausted um I haven’t filmed much recently last few days it’s just been stuck on a boat and last night rly hell so back to Marina for tonight and um pick up the story after that after a couple of days recharging back in cap dial things looked a whole
Lot better Monaco was our most easterly point on this leg of the journey and we had been hoping to cross to Corsica to spend some more time there before heading to the Bal Eric Islands however we realized that we did not have time to do justice to both and
Having already visited corica we instead started our journey towards the West we set sail Bound for to long and enjoyed 3 days of really nice sailing we dropped anchor on the way back in both santrape and heier but as we’ve already shown you those places let’s just enjoy some cracking sailing [Applause] Off Look how nice it is just to sit here on the bow and enjoy the sailing we’re sit in the cockpit it’s beautiful out Here Nicey so just coming out through the harbor they’ve given us our birth allegation of R 057 and we’ve got a map of Port so we can see where R is they told us it’s on the east side uh so we’re tucked right in tight so um
It might be quite a snug maneuver um but we know exactly where we’re going um the wind is going to be on our nose I would say although it’s obious and different right in on the port uh so we’ll just go on in and see how shape so it’s going to
Be Stern two so we’ll have to stop outside drop the dingy um and put it on the bow so that we can reverse into the Space Look Quite And it’s probably just painted looking towards T long from the port it looks a little Bland but once behind that initial impression it was an attractive and pleasant town to spend some time Way you look very French Dar so I had a quick look around T long the other night and it was I was yeah it was okay was just like a keyside drinks place but actually found the center now and it’s quite pretty it’s quite nice
Nice to sit out and eat and have a drink in the center very Nice apparently so Kate tells me there are 200 fountains in tul I don’t intend to find them all don’t worry but here’s one seems to be built on a huge Rock um I don’t know if the rock was shipped in or what but um interesting Double Cheeseburger After 4 days in tulon it was time to set sail we were undecided on whether to sail straight to the baleric islands from tulon or whether to visit Barcelona first ultimately it was a weather-based decision do join us next time to find out which we chose and enjoy the sale

Monaco dahling? I’d rather be sailing!
Sailing further east from Antibes we waited for a weather window to cross back to Corsica and found ourselves in Monaco, known the world over as the playground of the rich and famous.
We dipped our toes into this tiny but exclusive and expensive country and watched the weather. Instead of the hoped for northerlies to blow us across to Corsica, the forecast grew into a far reaching mistral but the marina had no space for us to stay! After finding what we hoped would be a protected anchorage we crossed our fingers….
Once the mistral passed we regrouped back in Monaco before deciding to abandon our Corsican plans and start heading west and enjoyed some fantastic sailing en route to Toulon….

Nice video guys, looking forward to the next.
A great mix of content. Very enjoyable and informative for anyone going that way. Have you tried a flopper stopper to lessen ' roll' ? If not, what about a bridle from the anchor rode to midships or stern? Or what about a stern anchor in addition to reorientate re the swell?
I watch this from the comfort of our sofa and glimpse the short highs and lows of your life. I am fresh back from two weeks sailing in Thailand which was simply fantastic but it's only a holiday. For you two its life afloat and a far different proposition of reality.
Super. Thank you.
Thanks
You need a 'flopper stopper'. Used all the time on the Pacific coast of the Americas.
Loved the video Kate and Ian, your videos are always really interesting. I guess I wouldn't have enjoyed the rolling around in the Mistral either. I wondered how hammocks would perform in such conditions, presuming there was enough room. Of course that wouldn't take care of the 'slapping' of which I have some very limited experience. As usual, I'm looking forward to your next video. Thanks, P.
Lovely ⛵️. I’d rather be at a rolly anchorage than a land lubber 😊 can’t wait to be sea gypsies ⛵️⚓️
