Who does PINOT NOIR better??? Australia vs New Zealand
P Noir is a beloved wine grape all around the world and while its Origins lie in France there are substantial plantings in California Germany and these two oceanic countries Australia and New Zealand PIR was introduced to Australia in the early 1800s the first plantings were around 1830 there are
Just under 5,000 hectares of Vineyards if my math serves me like 12,500 acres in Australia it’s the fourth leading red grape planted in New Zealand there are 5800 hectares of Vineyards it’s the number one planted red variety if you add together those total plantings between New Zealand and Australia that’s
Less than a third of the entire PIR plantings in France both countries make fascinating pen and Wars when I used to live in Asia I used to drink them often in fact I miss drinking them even though people think of Australia is a hot place you got to remember in the entire
Country of Australia is bigger than Continental Europe there are a lot of cool regions regions that really stand out for PIR include Mornington Peninsula Tasmania Yara Valley the Adelaide Hills and More in New Zealand Central atago is really the showstopper although there are great P noirs being made in
Canterbury Martin burrow and even marro a region that’s famous for San Blanc in general I prefer the quality of Australian pirs for my palette personally however the most impressive Oceanic pirs I have tasted have been from New Zealand namely the region of martinborough I’m generalizing here
There a lot of good producers but I find Australian pirs to be more fruity more in the red fruit Spectrum a little bit softer where New Zealand it can be quite different in places like Central otago and martinb bro they can be darker they can be more concentrate even a little
Bit tanic I’m ready to go to work I even have my wannabe wine maker vest on I remember once a very esteemed well-renowned wine maker told me tasting peanut Noir is work it’s actually not a lot of fun because you have to think a
Lot of us wine Geeks love P Noir for its haunting Aromas can be perfume can be floral even really can express sense of place can have some earthy mineral type notes usually has a silky mouth feel and depending on the style can be pretty structured pretty tanic especially in
The case of burgundy although New World P noirs are usually made to be a little softer that means they’re not as astringent I’ve got three Australian pan noirs and three New Zealand P noirs from all different regions these were all available in the USA I know that some of
These wines might be harder to find in Europe sorry about that I’m ready to get tasting tasting on a burgundy glasses these are the Ria burgundy glasses these are the best inexpensive red wine glasses I’ve ever used a lot of people have thanked me for recommending them I
Have a link in the description box if you want to check them out I appreciate it these are all screw caps cuz they’re Australia New Zealand pinor so I poured them out and then I had somebody mix them up for me I’ve usually preferred Australia PIR over New Zealand PIR in
Its totality in the past let’s see how that shows up here today it’s winter time when I’m shooting this I wanted to get a little colder so there weren’t any flies coming around and landing in the glasses I wanted to give pinoir ample time to breathe to express itself
Usually when it comes to wine glasses I like Universal glasses if you’re ever going to use a varietal specific glass P Noir is the grape to use it for I fine with a lot of universal glasses peanut War doesn’t express its best you need a big bold glass let’s give number one a
Go here very very very nice right off the bat red red raspberry strawberry almost like a little bit of a cool Ocean Breeze type Flavor now here’s the thing stylistically smelling this right away I would probably guess that we are in New Zealand or Australia they just have that
Distinctive flavor profile I like that cool air type flavor I took a 7we road trip across New Zealand back in the day when I traveled around the world for the first time and I just remember on the south island driving along the coastal roads both on both sides of the South
Island have the mountains in the middle and then the ocean on the side I thought wow this is just incredible so that’s what I smell here so maybe it’s kiwi we’ll see some of these wines I haven’t tasted before only a couple of them I’ve tasted previous vintages I’m looking for
Length here panir is really hard to taste cuz it’s quite delicate here the tannin are soft it’s not super structured they are more fine grained all these wines are pretty expensive we’re talking in the $40 to70 range so they’re going to be higher end stuff it’s got this nice burst of flavor it’s
Just nice well balanced Oceanic peanut or really quite good let’s move on to number two here two has much more slate flinty notes one was a little bit more fruity while two the Flint the crushed rocks jump right out at me but you still have the red raspberry flavor number one
Had a mix of strawberry and red raspberry this is fullon mineral red raspberry smells really distinctive just this flavor profile has me kind of go into Martin Burl just that flin toess it just almost smells quite intense and Martin B wines I feel like you get a lot
Of the earthy characteristics this is structured long I think I have one maybe I have two Martin Burrows in here this is I think is a Martin B it’s just got a lot of structure tanons are tight but when I say the tannins are a little big bigger and structured panir tannin are
Going to be different than big Cabernet 7on or bolo tannins these are a little bit softer it just adds a little bit of aeny number two is great let’s move on to three here very difficult in terms of differences are all different in style three is the most floral so we had
Fruity we had flinty and now we have floral rose petal e even has a little bit of time you’re still going to get some strawberry rhubarb type flavors this is extremely bright when I say bright I’m saying it’s got a lot of acid you got to think if you have ever had
Fresh pressed juice before especially when it comes to orange or maybe grapefruit juice the SE comes and hits you hard this one is extremely bright I’m an acid guy the acids higher I think maybe most people would prefer number one in terms of fru two is for more
Connoisseurs you have to think through it a little bit three is for more people that love a city like me resling nuts it’s brilliant stuff let’s move on to number four here four is also concentrated darker I think two and four maybe Martin Burl Central aoi red raspberry black cherry this really
Smells like if you have flint and you smack them together you know I used to do a lot of backpacking camping and trying to start fires when you don’t have matches it’s a game we used to play that’s what it smells like you have the sparkin in it length here is perfect
This is structured man when you have fantastic wine you have this beautiful interplay between the fruit the acidity the tannins there’s this little dance in your mouth and then really good red wines I want just a touch of astringency that’s what I’m getting here in New Zealand it’s pretty southernly you would
Think that the wines would be a little bit lighter they are the most southernly Vineyards in the world however there’s a partial hole in the ozone layer there so when you’re there the light is a little bit more intense that’s why I do think pinoir develops more color I know when I
Was with some famous wine makers in Santa Barbara County where the pirs tend to be a little bit darker they were talking about just because there’s a lot of sun they tend to be more darker doesn’t make the peor better or worse it’s just what it is four was absolutely
Killer it’d be funny if a central tago wins because I’ve always been poo pooing on Central Taco gets so much hype and that’s what people know it for I prefer Martin B five is such a great balance between the flin the floral also a little bit of time flavors what I like
About these Oceanic p noirs is a lot of times they’re not trying to be burgundy I think Martin Burl is the closest in these two countries that become burgundy but they are a distinctive Style on their own this is also brilliant there is a little bit of structure here
Beautiful plant I mean these are some really impressive wines let’s move on to number six here six is the flinti by far I think I had number two is slady I had number four is when you spark rocks together five was Flor and flinty this is super super flinty which kind of
Reminds me sometimes of some Tasmanian peanut NOS I’ve had before darker as well more concentrated even in the color I can see out of all these wines this is the least fruy it’s the most tanic as well it’s entirely mineral driven it is pinoir so you’re going to have those
Bright red fruit flavors but if you want a big fruity easy drinking pinoir this is not going to be it six is so funny cuz I’m scoring for right now what I’m enjoying but I think it might be one that lasts the longest because it’s really structured the tannins are are
Quite drying for PIR that is this is hard that’s difficult you ready for the reveal tight tight scores here okay I think if you’re a Peno head you’re not going to go wrong with any of these I think number one is the most friendly out of all these it’s something I would
Recommend to everybody I think everybody’s going to like it has enough fruit to interest people that aren’t really hardcore in the wine it has some of those nuances nice balance I gave it 92 points 92 points let’s see what number one is I only think that well I think this is Australian
Let’s see we’ll see flavor profile easy drinking I just think it was Australian let’s take a look it’s not it is New Zealand this is the Pyramid Valley Manata 2021 50 bucks easy drinking pyramid valleys from canterberry the capital of that region in the south island is
Christ Church it’s amazing there cuz the mountains are so high they come close to the Sea this is one of the panir producers I’ve always been impressed with this is a brand new project this is from their Central aago Vineyards 50 bucks brand new wine 2021 young this is
Something you bring it to a dinner party absolutely everybody’s going to love it got one wrong already number three was the most floral I said that a bunch strawberry rhubarb flavors the acidity is what made it popping I was you know one in three were quite similar to me I
Think more people are going to enjoy one three just has more acidity and for PE people that love recing like me that’s what draws me to it I think this is Australian 92 plus points 92 plus points this is the giant step sexon Vineyard P Noir from Yara Valley
2021 this has got a weird pricing system I was looking up anywhere from 5050 bucks to 79 bucks Giant Steps actually has won tons of awards I think this wine was in some of the top 100 Wines of the World list and different critic sites
This is a single Vineyard I used to buy their basic Peno a lot in Singapore it’s a super Dependable wine and I remember once in my w set 3 course being tricked by one of their chardonay which I thought was burgundy very nice wine Australian I call it so we got one kiwi
One Aussie wine let’s move on five and six tied for 93 points number five was that perfect balance between flinty floral had some thy some garig notes along with the red fruit flavors I think it was impressive had pretty good structure I don’t know whether this lies
In I didn’t know if it was Australian or uh New Zealand let’s take a look here from Tasmania oh I have to go back and see I think that when I tasted this I said some of this this reminds me of wines I’ve tasted from Tasmania before
Wrong number six here which kind of reminds me sometimes of some Tasmanian peut ORS I’ve had before you’re WR number five this is the do rimple Pipers River Tasmania pinoir 2021 this comes in at 40 bucks Tasmania really hot area for chardonay PIR right now especially for sparkling wines in
Islands south of the main island of Australia I have not been there yet I really want to make it there in the past I did a couple big Tasmanian P Noir Chardonnay tastings and I came away disappointed with quite a few producers however I’ve done a few videos in the
Recent months with Tasmanian pan noirs and they’ve both been impressive 40 bucks 93 points for a pan Noir that’s pretty good I think Deli rimple is owned by the same family that owns yalumba even though it’s a bigger company it’s still family-owned so that’s cool if that’s important to you
Number six I think a lot of people would think this is the worst wine out of the bunch because it was more mineral driven it was the least fruity out of the bunch it was really structured I gave it 93 points because I see this wine has a big
Time future I don’t know if it’s Australian or New Zealand I think it could be either way 93 points mineral driven buy or beware though this is a wine that you probably want to store for a little while let’s take a look this is the craggy range tuna Road Vineyard from Martin burl
20214 box this is a single Vineyard wine their even basic wine is delicious and they have a wine a step ahead called the aoha which is like the top is one of the best Oceanic pen Wars I’ve ever had shows up in an upcoming video I actually
Thought wine 2 was this 93 points this is outstanding wine Cy range is a pretty welld distributed brand so you’ll be able to find these wines I was through this area in New Zealand back when I was traveling through the country although I didn’t know a ton about wine then I was
Just drinking it casually I need to go back there and I want to go visit them cuz I know they have a hotel too I think that just needs to be laid down for at least five more years that’s just my opinion personally two Aussie and two
New Zealand is that right yeah so the top two splitting hairs 94 and 94 plus points so we’re going to start out with wine number two slate structured long tanic I actually thought that this was the tuna Road I thought this was the Martin Boro wine I gave it 94 Four
Points I thought it was outstanding it’s a wine that you’re really going to enjoy now but I think it has the ability to age very nicely let’s take a look New Zealand bab this is the Smith and Chef PIR crew Karo from Central atago as well the Gibson Valley 42 bucks
It’s 2019 so it has a touch of age on it it still tasted young I don’t know a ton about this producer but the wine is good that’s all I have to say look at me poo pooing on Central tago and then came out with Central tago so we have number one
Which I think is going to have be an Australian wine it was darker had that you know the fire rocks type flavor I was talking about camping the length is what really separated here I thought it was Central tago Martin Boro but I guess I think Australia that’s all we have
Left the Sha Smith pinoir from Adela Hills 2021 3940 bucks this is absolutely absolutely outstanding wine I know that Michael Hill Smith is an MW Adel Hills right next to Adelaide is a little bit higher Vineyards are I think they go to 300 400 m so we’re talking about 1,200
1500 ft this is a brand that’s also widely available this is excellent Aussie Aussie Aussie I said overall I like Australian panars although in the past I felt like the most impressive ones I tasted were New Zealand but we have at the top 94 plus Australia 94 New
Zealand I had a ton of fun doing this tape ing let me know if you did too let me know if you like Australian or New Zealand pirs any favorite producers drop it in the comments below

I actually don´t drink much pinot from either place as they´re tough to get hold of in Germany but I absolutely love the By Farr wines with Tout Pres probably my favourite. They are quite pricey though.
I cannot bring myself to love pinot
Always complex, even the lower priced PN's. Love them. Ever try Cigar Box PN? Can we say Barnyard lol Pairs great with any kind of food . Great PN's here is Toronto area from Australia and New Zealand under 20 bucks .
i love pinot/burgundies. unfortunately the new zealand/australia pinots dont hold a candle to the oregon/california varieties. i dont get the floral aromas , tobbacco, and as much fruit from zea/aus. their more austere and rigid. i will keep hunting for a great one though
I nearly never drink pinot noir from AUS and NZL, as it is not my favourite grape and they're in general not cheap, so I hardly purchase these wines. I do like AUS shiraz and cabernet(blends) and NZL sauvignon blanc.
Just tasted a NZ PN and it was great . I find PN the easiest wine to drink and yet the hardest one to get right ! Great content ! Cheers !
Kiwi subscriber here. Its true central otago PN are being hyped and thier price reflects that. My preference would be martinborough for PN at any price level > malborough has great budget friendly PNs > central otago when going for acidity.
Also to mention, theres vintage variance for PN more than there is for NZ sav blanc.
Top producers are generally more consistent across different vintages. For budget friendly you ill need basic knowledge to buy the right one. Just imo
Giant Steps, Oakridge and By Farr are some favorites of mine when it comes to Australian Pinot Noir. Felton Road, Burn Cottage, Craggy Range, Dog Point are a few of my favorites from NZ. I like the depth and acidity from New Zealand Pinots a lot, I frankly think the potential there is higher than in Australia 😅
So, of course, I'd take the Giant Steps Sexton Pinot! It's reminiscent of Riesling, after all!
Matt we lost that battle to the kiwis tolpuddle , Dalrymple, Bannockburn, Giaconda and giant steps still a step off from Ata rangi, Felton road and Ripon
Great review as always. I really need to sort out my tasting of 'New World.' I know there's good stuff but I just can't get over that jam. It's my problem and I have to get over it.
The Shaw and Smith is always a great buy.
I prefer Martinborough to Central Otago as well.
Picardy in the Great Southern region of Frankland River are putting out some exceptional stuff. Only gaining traction within Australia the last few years despite being around a while. Watch this space
Desde Costa Rica, no pierdo un video, muy buenos quería preguntarte si podes hecer una cata de pinot noir joseph cattin, Francia alsace, para mi es un excelente pinot noir. Saludos muchas gracias
I do like Martinborough pinot and am pretty partial to the pinots from Escarpment, although there is a lot to enjoy elsewhere too. On the Australian pinots, I think it can be pretty hard to pin down a style to a region as several of the main pinot regions are quite large or have a fair amount of geographical diversity. There are 4 distinct sub regions on the Mornington Peninsula for example, while it is a bit ridiculous that Tasmania is a single region. Gippsland is also very large. I'd rate the Bindi block 5 from the Macedon region as my pick for the top Australian pinot, not that I can afford to drink it.
Outstanding as always Matthew and what an incredible blind. I must hang my head in shame as I don't think I've ever had an Aussie or Kiwi Pinot Noir. And because of that, I now have a lengthy shopping list for tomorrow. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Smith and Sheth are the MW and foreign investor who also bought pyramid valley
Thanks for the intro’s will have to get into those kiwi wines sometime
WHAT!! No Mornington Peninsula wines?? My favourite Aussie wine region. Wonderful, luscious pinots and amazing chardonnays.
When I was in Taiwan, I did enjoy Aussie and Kiwi PNs. I think in contential Europe they are hard to find.
Australia is synonymous with Shiraz and New Zealand for SB. Maybe in the UK it's different, IDK.
German PN is the value one here, with Austrian PN being nice as well. Great video and lots of fun. Cheers!
