How to Make a Travel Budget

Hey the F Travelers Mar with Walter world today we’re in Barcelona Spain and today we want to talk about is the kind of things you need to think about when you’re putting together your budget for a trip because this is a question we get a lot Walter’s world what am I going to

Spend my money on how do I even know what to Budget on well here are kind of the main things I kind of think about when I’m budgeting my trips number one I start thinking about my plane tickets if I’m going to be flying from the US to

Europe or Europe to Asia or to Africa or wherever I’m going to go how much is that big ticket item going to be because that’s probably going to be the biggest one-off purchase you’re going to have is that big plane ticket for a big trip so look at your options that are there

Check out for deals on kayak or Skyscanner to find out who has better deals and then go book direct with them so that’s the first thing is that plane ticket part after I figure out my plane ticket I start looking at where all am I going to go within that country within

That region and how am I going to pay for the transportation number two am I taking the train am I taking buses am I taking fairies am I renting a car figuring in my Transportation cost so I’m here in Spain and I can actually go online and figure out what the cost of

All my train tickets are going to be beforehand I can pre-book them if I want so I know exactly how much my budget is going to be on those train tickets or if I’m going to using cheap airlines like violin or EasyJet I can have an idea

What those are going to be so I’m figuring out my Transportation cost to travel within Europe or traveling within the us or southeast Asia wherever you’re going to go that’s the next thing third thing you need to think about with your budget is your accommodation where are

You going to stay are you going to be at the five-star place or is a two star place with a bed fine with you or maybe just a hostel that you can just throw your backpack in a locker and go to sleep in that’s going to be another

Thing you got to think about cuz remember your accommodation just where you’re sleeping I’m not here in Barcelona to enjoy my bet I’m here to enjoy Barcelona cuz it’s beautiful so consider that when you’re looking up hotels and hotel prices where you’re going to stay that might influence your

Budging for your accommodation next we have to think about food and food is one of those things that you can spend as much money as you ever wanted on food or as little money as you ever wanted on food because you can go to festar restaurants and go see where borate and

Do all those things or you can go to ALDI or go to the grocery store or go to the market and get deals that way that’s one thing I kind of think about is for me I plan out my meals that lunch is going to be my big meal cuz usually you

Can get a lunch special a lot of places around the world and then dinner is more like picking up something from the bakery or the grocery store that could be something factor in now the next thing we need to talk about are the museums and the sites you’re going to

See again these are things you can look up before you go because they typically don’t have the dynamic pricing of Airlines where the tickets go up and down or the hotel prices go up and down it’s more like oh the cigara famili cost this many euros you already know that so

You can factor that in so you can look and see how much you’re going to spend and when you’re doing your research on the sites the museums make sure you look and see what days the month might be free or days the week that might be free

Schedule that in to make your budget go a little bit farther now the next thing you want to think about on your budget is your souvenirs look you’re not going to come along with nothing you’re going to buy something when you’re there we buy paintings from local artists and we

Bring them home with us some people they J said if she was here in Spain with me she’d be buying shoes to bring home and we factor that into our budget so think about what you’re going to bring home and if you’re going to get gifts for your friends to save yourself money

Don’t get them the cheap crappy gifts don’t even get them anything what you get them is you go get a postcard you write them a nice letter and mail it to them you’re spending A50 here in in Spain or maybe a $150 in the US and you’re sending a postcard back to your

Friends back home and they know you thought of them and that’ll mean more to them than some keychain or some you know $10 little souvenir thing but do factor in how much you’re going to spend on things be here cuz I know Johnson when she comes to Europe she buys all her

Clothes here she doesn’t buy them back in the US and so we know that so we factor that into our budget another thing you got to think into your budget is your insurance you do need to get your trip insurance or your travel medical insurance you want to have that

Just in case something goes wrong usually it’s not very expensive but it’s an important thing to have because it can get really expensive you get sick or get hurt when you’re traveling and you don’t have it so that’s another thing and then I think another thing you need

To realize is what do you have to pay for while you’re away but do you have a dog do you have a cat I mean I have to think about it how much is Doggy Daycare going to be if I’m going to Spain for 2

Weeks what $50 a day oh man 50 * 14 ouch that’s a $700 hit to your budget so you need to factor that in as well and the thing is is these are all just ideas to have for you to kind of get you thinking

About hey how much money am I going to spend well let’s think about where your money’s going to go okay so I hope this helps you get started on preparing your budget for travel so if you want more help we have all kinds of budget tips for traveling budget mistakes people

  1. Great video. I rarely make a budget myself though, as I don't want to think about money when I'm on vacation. I did that on my first trip to USA back in 2000 and it was horrible. Every time we found something interesting we had to skip it, if it was not on the budget. Today I rather skip a travel or two to save more money, si I can do what I want without thinking about the cost, like deciding to spend $900+ to take a plane ride from Key West to Dry Tortugas NP

  2. One suggestion to save a little is to eat where the local people do. The food is often better than is the touristy areas as well as less expensive.

  3. I've been around on a budget. First rule is, don't go unless you have the money to enjoy and see the location. After that, it's the big 3, food, room and transportation. The food and room you can budget. In Europe, I've eaten a lot of kebab as food prices for a nice meal are often more than a hotel room and i would often stay out of the city center in a hotel on one of the subway lines. Sometimes out on the local train line.
The one thing is, you often trade savings for time.
If you want the best bang for your dollar and to eat like a king for cheap, south America. On a 58 day, 7 country trip, I never spent more than $40 on a room.

  4. All of my travels have been on a budget, a small one at that, so the best advice i would give to people is several. First try to travel when you have the money to do it. Different countries cost and it can pay a toll on your finances if you're moving on a small budget. One example is me making a trip to Switzerland, amazing country but very expensive to be in. Second once your finances are straight, doing research on the areas you're going to can and will make a big difference, best to know the general cost of things before getting there.

  5. Minor point but I found that the cost of travel insurance for a year-long subscription has been cheaper than buying it per trip. I have also found that using the services of a good travel agent, while not necessarily cheaper, usually enabled me to get better places to stay than I might have found for myself.

  6. Great video. Suggest you also check if anything closed. The reason I say this is we were on a Mediterranean cruise and had a 2 day stop in Barcelona. Sunday & Monday. The big Mercado that I wanted to see was closed both days as it was a National holiday that weekend.

  7. Nice drone shots of Barca, curious if you took them or if these are available through a web service? Guessing the latter as you probably need a drone license let alone having to pack a drone.

  8. Always do an OVERESTIMATE of the total cost of your trip. Plane tickets, accomodation and car rental being the biggies, always factor in a few extra hundreds for meals, unexpected taxis, museums and other attractions. You gotta plan to wing it a little bit but still stay within your overall budget.

  9. For those in the US, I highly recommend learning about credit cards to not only improve credit scores but also earn big welcome bonuses to pay for flights instead of cash. Lots of no annual fee cards to earn lots of points from spend you’ll normally make. Pair it with a card that lets you transfer points out and you’ll never pay for flight again; or at least will help dent the final price. These cards can also provide travel insurance and primary rental car cdw so you can decline rental insurance. No foreign transaction fees is always a plus.

  10. It is cheaper to stay at nearby seaside resorts such as Santa Susanna rather than Barcelona itself. The trains to and from the resorts to Barcelona are frequent and not expensive.

  11. Three things:
    1. Thumbnail photo looks great! Keep up the weight loss, fellow traveler. 👍
    2. Love captioning on auto correct: 'Hello F lo travelers…'
    3. When thinking about expenses, remember that the one thing you spend but can't get back is your time. Invest your time wisely before and during your trip.

  12. Would love to learn some information from you about the different types of travel insurance that would cover medical expenses if you needed to seek treatment for any illness. Where is it best to purchase such
Insurance from? How do you know if you’re being ripped off or if the cost is reasonable? Are there different types of insurance you can look at if you’re over the age of 50? Any help you can offer is appreciated

  13. This is great! I planned a trip for 2021 but am not going until now for various and sundry reasons, so my budget has "expanded" shall we say. Yay inflation. Not. At least I don't eat fancy food.

  14. Thank you for setting realistic expectations. With all the influencers posting eye catching glamours pictures of their perfect moments overseas, it almost seems as if people like you all just had the unlimited budget. Hearing about budgeting tips from you helps me realize traveling doesn’t have to break the bank. Super helpful. Thank you 😊

  15. Just clicked on this video. Setting in my hotel about to go to sleep. I’m literally in Barcelona right now. Great city to visit!!! Been here before and I will be back here again!!!

  16. The thing that gets me are hotel costs – plane tickets can be easy to shop around for and get a good deal, especially with enough lead time – but dang, stay at a hotel for a week or two and ouch…
