Madrid Travel Guide – Spain
Madrid. Spain’s bustling capital. The place where history meets modernity with historic treasures, a vibrant culture and lively streets. Hi I am Martijn and your guide in Madrid. After watching this travel guide you know a lot more about this city to get the most out of your trip. From the historic center…
…to beautiful art, the Royal Palace and everything in between. If this Madrid travel guide has given you new travel tips or maybe you just like it please give a thumbs up or leave a comment under the video.
That’s the way you can help so other people can discover the video as well and the get to creates new travel guides for you in the future. Madrid is served by “Barajas” airport. It’s located northeast of the city center at the busiest and largest airport in Spain.
To travel to the city you can travel by metro line 8 that brings you to a big station in the city center and from there you can travel on several other metro lines. There’s a bus service every 15 to 20 minutes and a journey takes around 40 minutes.
And of course taxis the journey takes around 25 to 30 minutes depending on the traffic… …and when you travel to the city center then there is a flat rate of €30. Let’s start a Madrid travel guide on a bustling square and a notable landmark “Puerta del Sol”.
This square is often considered as the real City Center. In the square you’ll find a plag on the ground marking kilometer 0, indicating the center of the Spanish radial road network. And don’t miss this notable landmark a bear leaning against the strawberry tree.
It’s a symbol of the city of Madrid and a perfect place to take pictures. In a moment I will show you a great place for “Tapas”, the small dishes from Spain, and also more about the Royal Palace … …but first museums. The city houses a lot of museums for example the “Prado”…
…the “Thyssen-Bornemisza”… in a second more about that museum but first the “Reina Sofia”. The “Reina Sofia” is a must-see. The museum is well known for its impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. This museum is housed in a former hospital building. One of the most famous pieces is Picasso’s “Guernica”.
This painting shows the suffering and chaos caused by the bombing of the town of “Guernica” during the Spanish Civil War. A spot you can’t miss is the Royal Palace. It is the largest Royal Palace in Europe by floor area covering approximately 135,000 square meters.
It’s well known for the beautiful baroque and classic architectural styles. Although the Royal Palace is a major tourist attraction nowadays it is still in use for state ceremonies by the Spanish royal family. However they don’t recite in the palace.
And keep in mind that it is not possible to film inside even with your smartphone and there is security on every corner. The only thing I can show you is the entrance.
And to skip this line my advice is to book your tickets in advance and you can use the link and the text under the video. From the classic Royal Palace we go to the main commercial street in the city this is the “Gran Via”. The street is lined with shops, entertainment venues and restaurants.
It’s a nice place to stroll around. In a moment you will know a great park and an amazing rooftop but first… …If you are looking for “Tapas”, the small dishes from Spain mostly to share, my advice is to go to “Mercado de San Miguel”. It’s an indoor market in the city center with around 30 stalls.
Where you can buy all kind of “tapas”, seafood, bakeries and wines. Although the prices are high but at some stalls you can get some free samples. If you’re looking for some greenery then my advice is to go to the beautiful “Retiro” Park. It’s a big urban park in the middle of the city…
…where you can run, walk, chill or rent a boat and go on the water by yourself. And in the middle of the park you will find the beautiful “Palacio de Cristal”. If you want to have a drink on an impressive rooftop my advice is to go to “Círculo de Bellas Artes”.
This place was founded in 1880 by a group of artists and nowadays on top there is the “Azotea del Círculo” It’s a rooftop and the entrance fee is around €5. In a moment I will show you some Egyptian influences in the city but first “Plaza Mayor”.
This is a main square dating back to the 17th century and is used for public events, markets and festivals. The square is known for its impressive architectural design. The most prominent building on the Square is the “Casa de la Panadería” in English the bakery house.
From the bustling “Plaza Mayor” we go to one of the best museums in town “Thyssen-Bornemisza”. And that is a prestigious art museum. Holding a collection spinning the 13th to the 20th century. The collection includes for example European paintings from the Renaissance to Mmodern art. This museum showcases masterpieces providing a comprehensive and dynamic representation of artistic achievements throughout history.
We’re not in Cairo Egypt … we’re still in Madrid in Spain… …but in the city center you will find this ancient Egyptian temple. it was a gift from Egypt to Spain in the 20th century reflecting the ties between both countries. In a moment I will show you another beautiful palace..
…but first Madrid is a perfect City to walk around and explore some of my favorite neighborhoods for example “Malasaña”. It is well known for its bohemian atmosphere, artistic vibrancy and eclectic culture. The narrow streets and the squares create a unique atmosphere. Making “Malasaña” a must explore destination for those seeking Madrid’s alternative culture.
The second one is the up-skill district “Salamanca”. With elegant boulevards, high-end shops and fine dining. And there is also “Chueca” at a heart of the city is this a lively and inclusive lgbtq+ neighborhood. Its vibrant streets pulls with bars, shops and restaurants creating a welcoming atmosphere… …that celebrates both the city’s history and contemporary culture.
And then Palacio de Liria”. A historic residence and home to the house of Elba one of Spain’s most prominent families. it’s famous for the beautiful architecture and the rich cultural heritage. My advice is to book your tickets in advance and you can use the link and the text under the video.
Another building which is worth a visits is located next to the Royal Palace the “La Almudena Cathedral”. Its blending tradition and elegant architecture. What is the best time for a visit I think the fall period, September till November… …or otherwise the spring period March till May when balmy temps blow through the city.
