Visiting BRATISLAVA: Our TOP 5!

Today, we take you to one of Europe’s lesser-known capitals, Bratislava in Slovakia. Once called Pressburg during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this historically rich city, with half a million inhabitants, assumed the role of the capital of the small Slovak Republic in 1993, following the dissolution of the former Czechoslovakia state into two independent republics.

In this video, we’ll show you why, despite being less renowned than other nearby capitals like Prague and Vienna, this welcoming city deserves a day of exploration. By the way, if you haven’t already, you can also check out our videos on Vienna and Prague. Here’s our top five list of must-visit attractions in Bratislava!

5. Castle A Bratislava icon, even depicted on Slovak Eurocoins. We can start our visit here, allowing us to see the serene Danube flowing beneath the hill. The castle is open for interior visits, serving as a museum, but frankly, the interiors hold little value as the entire castle was

Reconstructed post-World War II after over a century of ruin, having been nearly destroyed in a severe fire in 1811. 4. Main Square Hlavné náměstíe Located in the pedestrian zone of the historic center, this square once housed the market, town hall, and a fountain providing water to the inhabitants.

Today, you can see an ingenious system providing refreshing steam in the summer for the square’s visitors. 3. Life-sized statues Strolling through Bratislava, you’ll come across numerous statues and curious poses, like this voyeur. These statues were installed at the end of the Communist era to enliven the streets of the city.

Do you like them? Let us know in the comments! 2. UFO Tower For the best view of Bratislava, it’s essential to ascend the futuristic UFO tower, located on the other side of the Danube from the historic center. Here, you can enjoy the panorama and have a coffee in the highest bar in Bratislava.

1. Modern Bratislava and the Liberation Monument We recommend taking the tourist train departing from the National Theatre. This will give us a comprehensive view of the city. For example, we see the Slovak radio building in its original inverted pyramid shape. and the famous Blue Church in Art Nouveau style.

Climbing through the elegant district, which also houses embassies, we reach Slavín, the memorial commemorating Bratislava’s liberation from Nazi rule by the Red Army in the spring of 1945. This monument is also a cemetery, hosting the graves of many Russian soldiers who fell to liberate these lands.

From the monument, situated on a hill not far from the center, we get a panoramic view of Bratislava. Here, for instance, we admire the castle. Bonus. Food! We definitely recommend trying the local cuisine, as the quality price ratio is excellent. Slovak cuisine is genuinely tasty.

We dined at Bratislava Flagship, one of the city’s most famous restaurants, located in a building that once housed a theater. We opted for goulash served in a bread crust and a flavorful sausage.
