Americans Try German Food for the First Time

It is our first time in Germany and today we are going to be trying a bunch of German foods all the classics that we can find and we’ve come to this place called eyes grub it’s a brewery and they seem to have a lot of the classic so we’re going to check it Out starting our day of right with drinks I got a reasing made in the mines area and Jeremy got himself a dark beer I think Jeremy you would like greasing from Germany because I really enjoy it and I don’t think it’s too sweet and I don’t think you will

Either okay it’s not terrible I still just don’t think white wine is my thing but in terms terms of white wine it’s not that bad since we are in mines we are going to try a couple dishes that are more popular in this area starting with some sper which is like a cheese

Dip from this area that we’ve had before but we have not had it in a restaurant yet so we’re excited to try it when we first got into town my cousin made it she said it’s like a cream cheese sour cream kind of dip that has paprika and onion powder in it Really nice and creamy a little bit of sour cream taste a little bit of cheese taste it’s just really Savory and nice going to try it with some some of this nice big chunky boy pretzel I love how creamy this dip is but the paprika and the onion just gives

It a really nice flavor this this is amazing and if you come across it I know they don’t have it everywhere in Germany but if you come across it you have to try it it’s really really good we also got the fles first which is a meat

Sausage that I think is supposed to be kind of like baloney um it’s also similar to there’s another uh sausage here called liba quesa which I think is like the name is liver cheese but I think it’s more like a baloney and it’s similar to that as well uh is what my

Cousin was telling us it comes with potato salad and you’re also supposed to have it with a little bit of mustard and uh as the uh server politely told us do not eat the shell you have to peel the the casing off of it you like the flesh

First I think I think it’s good I think I do prefer it warm a little bit but it’s good both ways mhm yeah warm for the wind I was surprised that the fles first is warm but the potato salad is cold that is different than some of the

Other Potato salads who had here but it does have really good flavor I like the dill and there might be chunks of pickle or onion or something in there oh okay it’s good the more that we eat of this the more that it’s becoming my favorite thing I just really really like that

Potato salad it’s so flavorful and the fles verse is very complimentary to it our Mains have arrived and we were actually originally going to order more of them but I think we made the correct decision to only order two things I got the quesa spla this is a little egg

Noodle with cheese dish and it’s basically Germany’s pasta I’m not sure if they all have a mental cheese or not but that’s what the menu said here and fried onions it smells like a nice savory grilled onion dish looks really good yeah we’ve had this at a German restaurant in the US

But I don’t know how much it compares to the authentic experience does it not compare that it doesn’t this is a 10 of 10 it’s just so creamy and the cheese has a little bit of a strong flavor to it it’s it’s a nice cheese and yeah it’s just creamy and delicious the

Noodles are just like soft and tender and everything I wanted them to be I feel like if there’s anything I’ve learned in our time in Europe in the UK that cheese and onion is one of the ultimate flavor combinations this is delightful it really is cheesy crunchy

With the onions that’s great I just really love those noodles too they’re just like little to Heaven our English menu says that if we lay our beers down it means that it we want a new One what do you have there Jeremy I have shine haxa which is like a I think fried pork knuckle which is just a popular thing here I’ve seen numerous people just since we’ve been sitting haveb it and it looks interesting and I’m down for fried

Meat I think I think is a days long process I think that they marinate it for several days and then it roasts all day bread bread not even sure how to start this honestly I think so I think the other name for this is either a pork knuckle or a ham hog

Too I don’t love the look of it I have to say is that crackling on the top like crackling yeah that actually looks like some nice wow that looks really good yeah once you get through that crackling surface it is steaming yeah I’m not a huge fan of sauerkraut that actually goes together

Fairly well gives you a little acidity with the other flavors it’s pretty good I didn’t realize when it came to the table until it was sitting on my side of the table how huge this is this like the size of like an INF head or something

It’s huge I think you like the meat I’m not sure about the rest of it yeah you know I don’t I don’t love eating food off of a b yeah I know you don’t but this looks very tasty I think first impression um seeing the outside I was

Like oo that looks like a crunchy bit I won’t love but this meat looks nice meat’s really good it’s so Savory and tender just the the flavor of it almost reminds me of pot roast kind of yeah yeah like a pork pot roast yeah like a pork pot roast yeah it’s just

Really wow that really good fall apart tender yeah I as we travel I kind of rate things of how I think about how my mom would like them CU my mom has what she calls super taste buds she’s very specific about what she’ll eat and I

Think she would like this which makes me think a lot of people would probably really enjoy this try a small bite because I know that in the UK I did not like pork crackling you’ll think it’s better than that but I still don’t think it’s really going to be your

Thing yeah I like it it’s really okay yeah you know it actually to me tastes like a very very crunchy version of a fried chicken skin like when you have Fried Chicken it it definitely to me is a lot less scary than the pork scratchings we had in the UK are it’s

It’s pretty tasty but the meat inside is the real highlight that was so good but we have one more thing on the agenda before we can call this a real food day of trying German Food M this an absolutely beautiful city and it’s very surreal to be in a place that is is not very far from where my grandma was born and grew up in and if there’s one thing that my Grandma loved to do it was Caffe and cooin coffee and

Cakes and I’ve noticed since we’ve been here that my cousin also seems to like this tradition it seems to be pretty popular here that you have like a nice little coffee and a cake in the afternoon so we’re going to pick some up and bring some over to my cousins and

We’re going to have a nice little coffee and cake afternoon going to pop into the Dome Cafe this Cafe is is right next to the [Applause] cathedral what a lovely day of trying a lot of very good German foods today I’m curious what of the things that we tried would you be most interested in trying or if we missed something that we should try the next time that we are here in

  1. Leberkäse has nothing to do with liver or cheese. the name consists of two words from old german. one is related to loaf ("ein Laib Brot"), the other to case because Leberkäse as well as cheese usually were produced in a case.

  2. Try the Mettbrötchen. Don't Google it though before you order it. If you're heading to Cologne or Düsseldorf, try the Poldi sandwich from MangalxPodolski kebab places. 👌🏻

  3. "Wein auf Bier, das rat´ ich Dir, Bier auf Wein, das lass ein"

This is an old German saying which means "drink wine after beer, but never beer after wine"

And yes, there is something to it, you will notice it 😉

  4. The Kässpätzle look not like house-made. You should try them again in a good Swabian restaurant, where they are made fresh in-house. Or Käsknöpfle in a Badenian restaurant (Badenian Knöpfle are a bit thicker and shorter than Swabian Spätzle, but otherwise essentially the same – Knöpfle means literally "little buttons"). You can get also good Spätzle in Tyrol, but the cheeses can differ from region to region. Swabians have usually half Swiss, half mountain cheese. In the Allgäu some of those would traditionally be replaced by Limburger or Romadur or Backsteinkäse ("brick cheese"), which is bit more strong-tasting.

  5. The word "Leberkäse" has not the meaning it is supposed to have. In this case, the word "Leber" does not mean "liver". Many Germans don't know it, but the Leber in Leberkäse comes from Laib (loaf). It is a loaf cheese. Also Käse is not meant as "fermented milk", but in the very old meaning of "curdled". It's a curdled loaf, hashed meat baked together.
A similar confusion is connected with the word Leberwurst – liver sausage, which also originally meant loaf sausage. But here, the confusion was so great, that about 20 years ago, Germany had to change the respective laws. Now, Leberwurst actually has to contain liver, which was not a requirement before, as it never meant liver to begin with.
(In Austria, which has a similar cooking culture, both words are less confusing, as the Leberkäse is called Fleischkäse – meat cheese, and the Leberwurst is called Streichwurst – spread sausage.)
PS: To me, the best way to eat Leberkäse is with fried potatoes, spinach and a fried egg.

  6. The best way to peel off the Fleischwurst is to make a small cut lengthways and then peel it off first. Then you can eat the sausage more easily!
And you can also use your fingers to peel the sausage if necessary. No need to worry about that!

  7. awesome video. Just a little tip: you can eat the skins too, from the sausages AND the Schweinshaxe (that is the best). The only sausages where you dont eat the skin are the Weiswurst ones from Bavaria. Usually in Germany we are big about eating all the parts of the animal, or at least most of them 🙂
The best way to find good food is asking locals.

  8. Schweinshaxe – i normally eat it like a caveman. Only at home of course – not at a restaurant. If its done right – its just the best way to consum protein.

  9. Strange – eating in a German restaurant and then missing out on the best parts of the dishes – the skin on the sausage (what kind of a moron of a waiter told you not to eat it ?????) and the crunshy bit of the pork knuckle . sad 🙁

  10. Got to say, that a Schweinshaxe without any brown gravy is a bit weird for me. I normally know it to be served with brown gravy and Knödel. xD

  11. 6:05 that ringtone in the back from the landline is so german, i can still hear it in my dreams from when i was young. No really its so wildly spead all over germany, i think everybody knows it.

  12. That is an EXCEPTIONAL Schweinehaxe – I'm so jealous……… usually they're slightly crispy on the outside, but then a LOT of gloopy fat surrounding the meat…….. It's a favourite thing at Oktoberfest……… last one I had I cut off more than half of what was on the plate as it wasn't crispy

  13. Would definitely recommend Mettbrötchen as a lunch snack and if you see them on a menu you could do a lot worse than Maultaschen. Also potato salad varies a lot throughout Germany. Sauerebraten is going to make you very happy too. And because you are in Germany, Döner Kebab 😉

  14. Schweineschaxe MUST have the crunchy skin. Chefs have to know exactly what they are doing in order to get that great crunchy texture. And no it is not fried. It is oven roasted usually, sometimes grilled after slow cooking to get the tender meat and sometimes it is even put in a wood fired oven in order to crisp up the skin. And there is a word of difference between fried pork skins that are pre-prepared & bagged or have been sitting for a.while and good freshly made ones. If you aren't impressed with that, I know I probably wont agree with most of your choices.
