The Battle of Waterloo Museum & Panorama – My Waterloo Campaign Part 3

Hello warm welcome to Dodger trips I’m Dodger and I’m ready to leave the hotel we’re going to delve into some history dive into the Battle of water low as we walk the battlefield so join me will you one your leave it for you yeah could have some coffee coffee for

The room yeah well last yeah ah right yeah yeah yeah all right thank you all right so that was the C this is the the hotel first floor ladies just showing me how to lock my door how to unlock my door what a da very nice St steps aren they water L

Beer all the usual leaf flps that you get in in a hotel here all the visitor attractions that’s a reception looks like the hotel mayel things as well right there a brilliant view of the lion Mound very yeah very Bri big bit of a breeze today the lion

Mound when I saw that from the train window I knew I was getting close to where I needed to be but that is the most standout Landmark I think for the battle of the the water L Battlefield and when I saw that out of the train window that was like a kid

Seeing Blackpool Tower when when they’re going for a day at the seaside it was I can’t explain how exciting it was to see it and to know that finally visiting this battlefield this is a place that I’ve wanted to go ever since I was a school boy just stopping and pausing just

Looking around because literally right and left it was just the it is the battlefield and as I’ve already mentioned the road that I’m walking on was more or less the front line for the Allied Army facing the French who were all massed on the opposing side of the

Valley what a sight that must have been now Wellington apparently had known about this this piece of ground a year before and kept kept it in his mind should the time ever come that he would choose it as his place to to stand and fight now there’s been a lot of

Controversy as I say the lion Mound is the most iconic sort of standout Landmark although it isn’t a natural feature obviously as I say there there’s been controversy ever since it’s been built because what happened is that they used the Earth from the battlefield to build

That giant Mound and it did away with the height of the British line here at this side of the valley it sort of flattened it out now there’s still a dip on the other side but basically this Ridge line here was much higher but they used the Earth to build that

Mound and Wellington used that Ridge line as a natural barrier natural form of Defense to safeguard his men Wellington had most of his army on the other side the lower side of this this Ridge line so when Napoleon’s artillery were firing the damage was minimalized to some some degree because

He was able to shelter his men on the lower side of the ridge the other thing is well Napoleon couldn’t get a full uh view of the English army either the Allied Army so there’s visitors started to arrive I can see the opening time is 10:30 and I’ve just left the hotel about

Qu past 20 past 10 just for this short walk there a couple of pistro here braier Wellington and la bivak so I’ll try and figure out where the entrance is so as I’m approaching there’s some Napoleonic field guns or I guess they’ be maybe Originals I don’t know replicas

Here on the right starting to see some of the memorials or just the statue of Napoleon but what a really need is a is a guide book to help me best enjoy this battlefield walk again piece of sculpture here so obviously upper torso but I don’t know what what it’s

About and there a French eagle and this is dining area here people having their breakfast la bivak de Emperor now there’s this large Panorama which is like 360° painting I believe and there’s also an underground Museum here people emerging so maybe it’s already opened what they also have going on this

This year to celebrate what is it the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning the Eurovision contest song contest from watero to the world I think it’s a display of all the costumes and the story of the group really didn’t have much to do with the battlefield at all did it but uh the

Song title I suppose brought some attention just have a look oh yeah so that’s seem to be the entrance down there we’ll go have a look this is a good this is a much better idea than having a giant Mound taking away the the terrain of the battlefield build it underground I mean

From from the surface you can’t really see it so I’ll turn the camera off I don’t know if you’re out to film in here or not we’ll see how we get on so I bought my ticket 1995 and that gives me the entrance to three attractions one time visit there’s

A museum the lion Mound the Panorama and also hamont Farm now I’m coming into the museum I CH to do the museum first and and here in the lobby is a huge display of the entire Battlefield and what we’re looking at here this this side here is the Allied lines the

Elm is the famous Wellington Elm where he kind of based himself during the battle he would move East uh East and West wherever he was needed but that was s of where he basic his headquartered during the battle the elm is no longer there just a few short

Years after the battle it was completely killed cuz from souvenirs strippers souvenir Hunters stripping the back and the leaves and everything so there’s nothing left and just to the right of the elm of this side of the road is where Hotel 1815 is so you can see

Literally right at the front of the Alli lines the farmhous is in the center that Saint which I mentioned earlier and going up the main road to shalwa the Saint in the distance when thepoon spent their final few hours of the battle over to the right is The Farmhouse

Hont and that’s where I’m going to be going later today and that was that was a battle within a battle and that was at the extreme right on S here you can perfectly see the valley running north to south as I’m looking s in Center on in the distance this is the

Valley floor with Shar Rises up to the Aly lines that the French Have To Cross this space and up the the r and they’re making their attacks Thought he was not there there a map of Europe in 1806 what I Haven realized actually until coming here that Belgium was only formed as an independent country in 1830 so after the battle of was so during that era 1815 this part of the continent was actually part of the United Kingdom of

Netherlands you can see here the train from London to Lil yesterday and then headed up to to Brussels then what I’ve also just learned is everybody’s familiar with uh portraits of Napoleon with his hand in his waist coat and apparently that was just sort of good manners in those days he wasn’t

The only one to do it there lots of well-known people who had pot painting with the hand in the waste coat and apparently it was considered C to have your hands dangling by your side and as the sort of clothing of the day didn’t have pockets that’s how it sort of turned

Into a customer tuing your hand away in your waist coat we’re getting something else that I’ve only learned since coming here yesterday po Napoleon very young Napoleon in 1803 this is a depiction of the battle of Morango in 1801 sorry the battle was in 1800 was painting this 1801 nowly this one

Here depicting the Battle of trapala which took place in 1805 this is from a painting by AUST mayor in 18 1836 never seen this before in a gallery actual paintings that just added some form of graphic to make him move very Napoleon See this is Portrait of Napoleon’s camp on the battlefield of Wagram Wagram W one w r in 1809 moving on Napoleon passing in front of the Imperial Grenadier guards at Jenner in 1806 now as a school boy the Imperial Guard I my I I sort of H them in such high

Esteem even though they were French I always sort of like if I’d wanted to be anyone I would have been wanted to be in the Imperial Guard Napoleon’s Imperial Guard w we got a huge huge display cabet I’m guessing on the right here is like the French military and on the left the

Allied but before we go up there let’s just have a look here this has got to be crossing of the berzen in 1812 so this is the campaign into Russia this is really good these the way they brought these pens in SL is really good so this is the announcement of the victory after the battle of lii in 1813 so these are all life-sized figures Napoleon’s Army so the background of this display is explaining how Napoleon

Landed at Gulf one near KS in the south of France with a thousand men after escaping from Exile off Alba and his gradual route to France as the regiments was regiment after regiment was sent out to to stop him they turned and end and endorsed yeah so his

His forces grew and grew until eventually he made it into Paris and in Triumph so it starts to look at the this British this display of the British army or the Coalition Army explains how the Allies had the superior say vast superity numbers well into an approximately 70,000 infantry 15,000 Cal

Bler who was the Prussian approximately 105,000 infantry 12,000 Cavalry while Napoleon had approximately 90,000 infantry and 22,000 Cavalry he was also out guned with a number of cannons as well so it was in Napoleon’s interest to keep the two armies apart and Tackle them one at a

Time Welling and bler had in a Arrangement where they would be in constant contact if one came under attack the other would come to their aid which is how it eventually turned out to be so what it’s saying on the 12th the 10th of March 1815 Congress of Vienna learns that

Napoleon has landed in the south of France on the 12th of March Wellington makes the decision to move Army it’s from Ireland into Belgium Highlanders foot guards what the display mentions is that the Napoleon had sought peace he wrote to the the leaders of Europe saying he

Wanted nothing else but peace but the four greatest Powers agreed to supply 150,000 soldiers of peace to unite in order to invade France around the 1 of July other nations promised smaller numbers of units and they decide there’s going to be no more treaties with Napo no doubt he was probably thinking

Well maybe he was tired of fighting who knows but after a few years they’ have probably wanted to to march on other countries again so we were going to put an end to it once and for all do the agre to to uh gather on the

Borders of France on the 1 of July to give time for the Russian army to get there now this gave Napoleon an opportunity and this is why we marched North into Belgium SL the Netherlands to take on Wellington and bler before the other armies could gather

Together so this is a bronze six pounder Royal Horse artillery gun it’s actually unknown from the Royal armories in England the gun Carriage is reconstructed but the barrel is original JY thir right so behind me there’s a film 4D says take your 3D glasses 3D glasses for 4D I don’t know 3D yeah

Anyway you can probably hear it the battle’s in full progress traffic lights at red so have to wait till it’s green next film in 8 minutes I just wanted to come into the museum for us to get a a good background refresh my memory of my school boy knowledge of the

Battle I thought it’d be a good basis then to go out into the field and understand the battlefield better so just hanging around now waiting for this 4 day I w’t be a to set the camera in there that would spoil it but anyways I’ll see you in a bit

Just come out of the the 4D film show the recreation of the battle mixture of real life people and animation it was superb I think what you’re left with is the cost of the battle I think it was the third most costly in lives lost during the Napoleonic era Wellington’s wellknown

Believe me nothing except a battle lost can be half so Melancholy as a battle won reputedly that was said after after the when the ground was being investigated prior to building this Memorial skeleton is UN the morning of the battle of what the defensive H I say that was a battle within a

Battle go Sergeant U captures the French eagle of the 45th line charge of the French cross yet these are the pushing troops arriving on the Welling To the Left Flank the defense of La by the king’s German Legion so again this is The Farmhouse that’s right in the center of

The battlefield acted as a sent to the AL Allied lines prussians attack C and this is the famous meeting on the evening after the battle at La Bell Alliance between blue car in Wellington 9:00 in the evening this is a welln p the Imperial Guard forming the line to allow Napoleon

To escape in his coach I’ve got that painting at home I depiction of hiside the coach and of you skulls found on the battlefield Memorial s honor of the Duke of Wellington I’m now going into the second attraction that must have been the 200th anniversary there’s all the grandstand of the spectators

Recreation of the battlefield mockup of the farm buildings Panorama of the battlefield made up of thousands of photographic layers extracted extracted from the photos taken during the bicentennial reenactment in 2015 6,200 reenactors took place so as I say just uh just heading now to the second attraction which is

The Lions Mountain so I’m going to climb the 250 odd steps be Deion Panorama ah so this is the Panorama this is not the actual climbing the the Lion’s Mound right okay the Battle of waterl has often been represented in panoramas the first was created at Leicester Square in London in 1815 same

Year as the battle then this Panorama was erected in 1912 as part of the festivities commemorating the centinary of the battle so this is gives you a view of the outside the structure supporting this see more when we get up top no doubt how it was assembled Panorama this way stairs wow that

Canopy wow this is huge amazing this Panorama is absolutely huge you just can’t I can’t describe I mean it’s higher than a cinema screen and it’s a full 360 and this is a painting so we’re look if we start off start start off there where the trees

Are the trees left and right in the center where are we about there left and that is where Hotel 1815 is I think that is Wellington’s Elm I’m not sure looking across is the main Brussels Shire Road with The Farmhouse Le so the French Cavalry attack must caval came across this open ground

Here and it took place on the approach to where the the lion Mound is where this Panorama is in the far distance over that white building of Lael Alliance that’s where Napoleon was directing the battle in the last couple of hours and where blue Sha Luca and Wellington that at 900

P.m. we got Marshall nay at the head of the French Cavalry it was attack after attack in the distance there with the the W the smoke burning beyond the trees that’s hamont Farm under attack the French Cavalry came up to the ridge line dropped into into the the dip

Below where the British and allies had formed squares to repulse this Mass Cavalry attack now Mall Marshall n’s clusters a bit impulsive and all that but he was regarded as one of the most competent of Napoleon’s generals Marshals of France but he went into this attack without infantry support or artillery

Apart so relying on sheer volume with a very few instances that have a British Square breaking to caval Beyond Wellington and his stuff I think there was three three attacks in succession by the Cavalry the building there in the distance moner je farm that is was used as an hospital by the

Allies the sunken road back to the crosswords near where Hotel 1815 is and Beyond Wellington’s Left Flank the prussians are starting to arrive there’s a face battle between the Frans and the the French each seas in control of the village of PL PL plot Plot amazing absolutely amazing is what that 4D film gave you as well was a visualization of just the the trauma the the death and Dr Destruction humans horses since see Napoleon and his stuff on on the Napoleon’s White Horse so I hope you’ve enjoyed that look at this Panorama I mean it’s absolutely

Stupendous so over 10 what 110 years old in its own right is this this painting how how long did this take to do can’t imagine but now we’re going on to the mound the lion Mound
