Fascinating Fun Hallstatt Salt Mine Tour Via The Salzbergbahn Funicular And Skywalk

I’m in Hallstatt, Austria Join me as I take the Salzberg funicular  to explore the Hallstatt Salt mine. The Salzwelten Salt Mines in Hallstatt,  Austria is the oldest salt mine in the   world and has been a major site of  human activity for over 7,000 years.

The community at Hallstatt exploited  the salt mines in the area,   which had been worked from time to  time since the Neolithic period. The salt mine at Hallstatt has been active since  at least 5000 B.C. through the Bronze age, Greeks,   Romans, Middle Ages, and into the modern one.

The prehistoric salt mine of Hallstatt,  along with its burial ground, is one of   the most prominent archaeological sites  in the world, and has given its name to   the Hallstatt period, an epoch of  European prehistory. The salt has preserved many organic  materials such as textiles, wood,

And leather, and many abandoned  artifacts such as shoes, pieces of cloth,   and tools and miner’s backpacks  have survived in good condition. More than 2000 samples were taken  from various archaeological sites   in the mines as well as at the surface. Now let’s go explore the Hallstatt Salt Mine

So I’m here again near the Skywalk today I’m going to do here the Salt Mine tour which has been around for  about 7000 years I believe The views are better than yesterday anyway So there’s about a half a mile walk, I believe from the funicular to where the salt mine is

So making our way up there now there’s a bit of a climb as well There’s also an audio guide with the tour Coming up to a little chapel St Barbara Looks like some trees are ready  for falling down the hill up there

So here we are coming onto what  looks like the start of the salt mine and the rain is starting to fall a little bit now again It’s a nice view Let’s go and check in Before entering the salt mine you’re given  some overalls to protect your clothing.

You will see why a little later on Just waiting outside the mine in my karate outfit or is that game from Korea I can’t remember what it’s called now where people died when they lost I hope that doesn’t happen today In we go, into Christina

After several minutes of walking down the mine  tunnel we come to our first salt mine slide This is the reason we’re given those  overalls to wear to protect our clothes No, no, no, no we only slide  when the light turns green Have we had the green light yet No not yet

Ok now, I think now Here we go! WOOOOHAA! During the tour you’re given presentations  on the long history of the salt mine And smaller people stand at the front It was now time for the second  and longer salt mine slide It was nice to meet you. Bye, bye

Are you, are you going to scream Scream? Ready, let’s go Ready, let’s go Let’s go WAAHHEEYYY! WOOOOHOO! Woaaahh! That was pretty cool It was now the final presentation  about the archaeological site and   the discovery of a bronze age stair way The original bronze age stair  way can once more be seen today

It tells us about this early stage  of Europe’s industrialisation And then finally to catch the  train out of the salt mine Well that was quite a fun tour And that was the salt mine quite an interesting tour for me I’m not usually into museums  but that was pretty good

It was now time to check out the views from the  World Hertiage Hallstatt Skywalk Welterbeblick You can actually see a bit more today Still threatening to rain but it’s not raining for now Probably the best views I’ve had all week here

Well while I was here I had to  hog the end of the Skywalk again

Join me on a fun adventure to explore the Hallstatt salt mine along with a ride on the Salzbergbahn funicular and a walk on the Hallstatt Skywalk! Watch now to see what this fascinating and fun Hallstatt salt mine tour is all about.

The Hallstatt salt mine is the world’s oldest working salt mine, located within the Upper Permian to Lower Triassic Haselgebirge Formation of the Northern Limestone Alps. It comprises 21 levels and several smaller shafts ranging from 514 meters above sea level (Erbstollen level) to an elevation of around 1,267 m (4,157 ft) (Erzherzog Matthias Schurf level). Salt production in Hallstatt experienced another boom from 1600 until 1960, and from 1600 until 1960, it was the most important mining location in the entire Salzkammergut Region. Today, the Salzberg in Hallstatt is one of the most popular excursion destinations during a visit to the World Heritage town, with the Salzbergbahn funicular taking you effortlessly up to the high valley at 838 metres above sea level. The Hallstatt high valley and the salt mine are absolute hotspots for archaeologists from around the world, as people were already living here in around 5000 BCE and an entire epoch of human history (ca. 800 to 400 BCE) was named after the famous burial grounds: the Hallstatt Period.

The Salzbergbahn funicular along with a panoramic lift and bridge continue to the restaurant and viewing platform. The free-floating Hallstatt Skywalk Welterbeblick sits 360 meters above the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hallstatt and offers the unique world heritage view of the historic town centre, the lake and the Dachstein Salzkammergut region

Ah….the salt mine tour looks like fun; interesting; my claustrophobia would no doubt kick in, I'll have to settle for a therapy salt cave with essential oils instead. lol Thanks for the share! Happy week!

  5. I was really wondering what these overalls were about, before you got to the slide. Also a surprise to see that you are less of a hermit than the channel might suggest 😁. I still prefer the outdoor trips, so I am looking forward to your return to the wainwrights that you already hintend on. Too many people just make me feel stressed, no matter if in person or in a video.

  7. Hi Paul well….. well done on this! Being a hermit going around these mines with a large group of people mustn’t have been easy but how much fun was this and what a great bunch! So much to see and learn about this place and the slides and train (mind your head – boy your heads were close to that tunnel roof) and knowing that above you is all that stunning scenery! Wow those views after your mine visit, incredible even when threatening rain! Great video Paul 👍❤️

  8. Hello Paul, the ride up the mountain looked awesome. Beautiful views at the top. The slide looked fun. The history would have been interesting. It’s a little dark in there. Such lovely views thank you for sharing with us , take care x Julie and Tony x

  9. Amazing archeological site with the salt preserving organic material. The tram views are spectacular. What a great slide. Interesting that is the reason for the cool clothing. Bronze Age industrialization is an amazing concept. Trains and slides… adult amusement park and salt mine tour. Those views on the deck superb. Thanks for the show and happy day to you👍

  10. Hi Paul, fabulous views from the Funicular and the top! I went there many, many years ago and remember dressing up in the overalls (at that time they were copies of the historic costumes, complete with hat). It was so much fun riding down the chutes in the mines. I remember it fondly. In fact, all of your Austrian videos have brought back happy memories. I would dearly love to go back there one day. Thank you for another great vlog ❤

  15. Sure did look like fun Paul, your new mate on the slide was holding on for dear life 😂 funicular and the train were impressive. I'm surprised they didn't make you wear a helmet on the train. The mine was nice to visit, but I wouldn't wanna work there. Bronze age, wow. Skywalk was awesome! Great views and I bet the air smelled fresh up there. Great day out!

  16. Wow pretty amazing that people have been mining salt from there for 7,000 years! I loved the slides in the salt mine. That looked like fun. That would definitely be a place that I would like to visit if I ever have a chance to visit Hallstatt. The views of Hallstatt from the top are beautiful! 😊👍42
