I Visited a RUSSIAN FOOD Distribution Centre
Hello everybody. Welcome to Travelling with Russell. Welcome to new video. Welcome to Moscow region. Now this is actually where I live in Russia. We’re around about 50 kilometers from the center of Moscow. I thought I’d do a little bit of a walk around the shop right behind me.
I want to show you something that this company is working on as a future initiative to better create efficiencies in delivering the food to the stores and and how they utilize their warehouses and might be a little bit interesting I think. Let’s go for a walk around the shop and then
Let’s jump into the second part of the video where I’m going to show you the warehouse where all the food comes from. If you haven’t heard of Pyaterochka before. It’s a very well-known supermarket chain in Russia. This is probably by a long way the most typical Supermarket there is in Russia
And this is a big reason why I call a lot of my videos typical there is 21,000 pichas throughout all of Russia no matter where you are in the country there is a store somewhere more than likely within walking distance and this one is actually a brand new location
And it’s only been open for less than 2 months. We are going to go a little bit behind the scenes. Not at the actual store here but at the warehouse for pichka and I’m going to talk you through a little bit of the new technology that they’re implementing
To create more efficiencies and make things easier in the logistics chain of this company. This is the loading dock for this store doesn’t need to be that big they just basically back a truck in and they load in and out the pallets and stock because it’s not you
Know particularly a big store if you compare it to a hypermarket or somewhere like Perekrestok. But Pyaterochka is incredibly popular in Russia. There isn’t a person in this country that has not heard of this chain if you’re wondering why I don’t have my hat on today it’s actually
Beautiful and sunny it’s actually +1 celsius. This is as nice a weather as we’ve had in a long time here in Moscow. I don’t even need my hat on. Let’s head on inside the shop. One of the main reasons why Pyaterochka
Is so popular popular in Russia is the opening hours and this particular location is open from 8:00 a.m. till 11:00 p.m. 7 days a week. No matter where you live in Russia there’ll be a Pyaterochka somewhere close by. Essentially it’s open late. So it’s nice and easy to come shopping they don’t
Have bigger trolleys here they’ve just got the smaller baskets and they got this little smaller push trolley where you put the basket on it which makes it easier to go shopping if you want to come and work here they’ve got some job openings there’s the daily specials right there and let’s
Have a very brief walk around and show you what a incredibly typical Russian Supermarket looks like pichka too some people is a convenience store to others it’s a supermarket now for me this is a scaled down full line Supermarket but just this particular store how big it is it has everything
You possibly need and more as you walk around you’re going to see all of the choices in here one thing that’s always mentioned in my videos and I realize that a lot too that there isn’t Shoppers
Necessarily in the store now as I’ve walked around before filming there is people in here you know this is one of seven pichas in my region where I live this one just a little bit further from
My house to come and walk and shop here but I’ve been here before and I know the store very well actually even the staff in the shop recognize me from coming often one of the other big draw cars
To this store is it’s got an in-house Bakery. There’s a couple of guys here getting some fresh bread and then they’ve also got a coffee station here as well so you can make yourself a coffee very simply and you can even pay at the register and leave from here or you can
Just carry it to the checkout and pay at the end I’ve lived in this area for close to 10 years and this particular store has been here for 2 months and it’s so nice to actually come in here and walk around a full sized store. Pyaterochka’s can vary quite a lot depending
On the location where they’ve chosen to open the business. So, this particular building was built solely for the reason of the supermarket but some of them are actually placed in existing buildings where there’s maybe an apartment block or housing so
It’s kind of nice to come into this bigger full line store and see everything on every shelf. One thing that this store does very well is it distracts me a lot from making the video’s. I’ve just noticed a brand new flavor of Lay’s. Cheese and Honey flavor has anybody had these
Has anybody seen them before now Lay’s are a very famous American brand of potato chips. They have a lot of flavors in Russian supermarkets does anybody want to try cheese and honey I wonder if they actually release that flavor to coincide with maslenitsa.
Which is this week in Russia. Which is basically pancake week and they’ve got an advertisement here letting you know there’s some discounts on pancake ingredients so the main reason that I came to this store and to create this video was to talk about some of the
Initiatives that P implemented about warehousing and actually one of these pallets is right here so what they do in a lot of the supermarket is they bring them to the shop floor and then restock the
Shop from the pallet directly onto the Shelf you can also see over here in the back corner where their dock is there’s a couple of the fresh pets that have come in so these literally are getting
Put out right now the lady is doing some of the restocking straight to the shelf so it’s a matter of taking it off the pallet finding the location in the fridge and getting it done now what we’re
Going to do from here is we’re going to jump over to the warehouse for pichka and I’m going to show you some of the amazing new technology that they’re implementing so the next few scenes
Are going to be from the warehouse that I visited a few days ago over in podolsk it’s about 2 hours from here so I’m doing this a little bit out of sequence but it’ll all make sense as you watch
The video and I’m going to voice over some parts of it because the warehouse was a little bit noisy and there was other people around and it’s just easy for me to explain it to you with a voice
Over so I hope you enjoy this part of the video walking around inside you can see all of the big pallet jacks these are all the ridable ones and the ones that can essentially reach up to the top here and get everything at the highest point of the warehouse walking around the warehouse
It’s certainly impressive I know I’m going to continually repeat it but it’s pretty interesting to see here we can see all the loading docks and the area where they prepare the pilots to go onto the trucks walking along the live different lanes and to see all of the stock it’s pretty impressive
How big it is just to explain where I’ve come to here this is actually the distribution center for pichka now of course we saw that at the beginning of the video and it’s one of my favorite stores
To come to and I was given this opportunity to come to this distribution center to have a look at the warehouse and then have a look at some new technologies that they’re introducing and they’ve set up a Innovation lab is what they’re calling it here at the warehouse and they’ve designated
An area that they’re able to test the different robots that we’re going to see in the video and this one here is the pallet lifting system or pallet jack and the gentleman on the side there’s
Pointing out how it’s got some QR codes on the floor I will talk about this a little bit more. The Design Lab that they’ve set up is giving them a chance to check out the machines themselves and the efficiencies that they can create and what their capabilities are in a warehouse
Environment like this now at the moment a lot of things are done manually or with some Mechanical Devices but the intention for Pyaterochka and this distribution center is actually to create an entire Warehouse using robot technology or what’s called autonomous technology.
Here is the wrapping machine I’m going to talk about this a couple of times as well this is really cool I could have done just a single video on this thing going around in circles I’ve actually worked in distribution centers and supermarkets myself and had to do this by hand
And I know how difficult it is to do manually so to have this kind of machine in place is just fantastic and I hope this thing becomes more relevant and prevalent in distribution centers not just here in Russia but around the world as well one of the other real main
Advantages to having autonomous robots and you know automated Machinery is a safety aspect in the warehouse and to not have people and humans in these areas where they’re doing the work I think it’s always going to be you know an advantage for the company and for the warehouse to have
A safer environment for the people that do work there to be working in and where they’ve created large exclusion zones for the use of these robots I mean it’s only a good thing for the warehouse for the people working there for the company and I always think personally that safety is
The number one thing in the workplace even ahead of efficiencies which of course this is what the idea of robots are creating is to create a more efficient system and you know try to reduce the number of human steps involved in the process of receiving the goods into the warehouse house
Putting them into the racking on the shelving and then bringing them down to be then loaded onto pets and then subsequently going onto the store later so for me there’s obviously a lot of advantages to robots and then also that safety aspect as well we can see here the robot pilet
Jack can come and collect the goods completely uned and then it lifts it onto the base right here and then it’s able to move around the floor of the area right here via cameras there’s also
QR codes on the floor where it directs to the right location one of the things I really like about this wrapping machine is the fact that it’s actually on Wheels and it can be brought from one location to another in the warehouse so it’s it’s not restricted to just where it
Is here like we see in this designated area that they’re doing the testing in and it can be brought to another part of the warehouse or into one of the lanes where all the food is and
It can be used to wrap something on the spot and then it can be brought back then to the normal area where it will actually just wrap the pallets the idea is that it’s as close as possible to the
Final destination of the pallet to go onto the truck and then onto the pishka store and just remember there’s 20,000 pkas in all of Russia so any efficiencies that they can create in
This industry is only a good thing for pichka and for the customer for you and I at the end of the day in the store waiting for something to become available so if they can create efficiencies it’s
Just going to be a good thing for everybody just to give you an idea of the difference between the robot wrapping machine and the manual wrapp machine I think is the best description they put the pallet here onto the turntable and then switch it on and it starts wrapping this is the
Robot floor washing machine it’s just left its home docking station and it’s heading down the aisle to start it shift cleaning this Lane that it’s heading down you’ll just see it in a second
And I’ll talk about it more we can see the robot now coming back down the lane from doing one lap up and down and it’s going to come right by where we are here and it’s going to basically
Return back to the station where it started from it actually has avoidance built into it so you can see that it basically stays out the way of people as it does a turnarounds very neat how
This works one of the gentlemen I’m on the tour with is doing a short video just to point out the difference between him doing the cleaning and the robots and how basically he’s working up a sweat
And the robot is just doing its thing without any worry at all after a long shift of cleaning the robot is now heading back home or at least to its charging station as we’re all following it with anticipation it’s very interesting how we’ve all come to see this technology
In action in such a big warehouse and this place is just humongous how big it is and there little robot running around and just a short walk away the robot is now finishing its shift and coming back to its docking station basically this is where
It does the charging and where it’s kept until it’s ready to go again very smart machine here he goes just making sure he’s got got the right angle and into the docking station how far of we come everybody in terms of Technology it’s just staggering that this is something that
We’re seeing now we can see here the robot testing the ability to lift up and down up to 1,000 kg of weight which is essentially all of the goods that we see on the pallet right here and its ability to
Lift as high as this robot specifically goes and it would be able to then place it into a different location or unload it and load it my colleague is testing out the robot’s abilities to move around
And he’s trying to guide the robot with his mind. Okay, so while I’ve been doing my tour were here in the warehouse they found one of the employees. What country are you from? I am from Columbia. Colombia, Wow. And you’re in Moscow. Yes I live here.
Now let me know or let all the viewers know. How many languages do you speak? First I must say my name is Christian. I am from Colombia. I speak English. I speak Spanish, German, Spanish and English and some Russian. Russian a little. Wow a little Russian. The same.
Maybe you speak more Russian than I do Christian. You’re amazing. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. We’re now having a look at some of the abilities of the robot pet lifter and the fact that it’s
Able to be programmed and do different functions one of the keys to this is on the floor here and the fact that it uses QR codes for it to protect the area on the ground and there’s a couple of
Different people here getting a bit of a talk about it to understand its abilities and how it can improve and enhance the efficiency of the warehouse just to talk a little bit more about the different Technologies here so there is this pallet lifting machine I call it a pallet jack
But it’s fully robotic and there is no humans involved in this machine it’s all working via QR codes on the floor and then the next step over here is the wrapping machine and this is also robotized if you like and it basically dances around the pallet and wraps it it’s really very
Smart how it works and just the ability to do this completely without human touch the idea is to come up with efficiencies in the warehouse which will allow the warehouse to work more efficiently in
Terms of a business day or a working day and then have less humans if that’s the right word to use. You can see all of the different functions this machine has basically it wraps pets and that’s
All it’s designed to do and this is the robot cleaner up close or at least a little bit closer floor washing robots and even though we’re here in Russia it’s completely written in English. St the moment it’s in sleeping mode and it’s essentially at a charging station or a charging
Dock and from here it can be sent out to do tasks and cleaning tasks in the main floor of the warehouse and for now though it’s having asleep well we’ve been shown this and been demonstrated it it’s very interesting they keep calling it a he as in a man and I asked
Them about whether or not it’s a lady or a man robot and for now it’s a man so let me know in the comments do you think this should have a name or a nickname for it at the moment.
Floor washing robot is what they’re going with getting a chance to walk around the warehouse for pichka is certainly very interesting this is something that I know very well from working on cruise ships and going to the warehouse in Miami Florida and then also in Australia.
I was working in supermarkets and this is very familiar territory. Then just seeing the employees here running around on these drivable pallet jacks and they’re picking the orders that will then be wrapped and put into the cross docks for collection to be delivered to
The stores it’s pretty impressive really and truly so we’re getting a chance to see here the pallet robot go down the main aisle here or one of the aisles there’s a lot of them this is
Aisle 30 and how it will be able to basically go to the designated pallet and then pull the item walking around a little bit more in the warehouse It’s just impressive the sheer size
Of this and then even in the far distance there you can see areas that are not even in use and it’s just staggering there is just aisle after aisle of different food Goods it’s really very
Interesting to see on the right here is the cross docks so all of these pallets are in rows based on the truck that will pick them up and take them to the individual store throughout Moscow
So these all preped ahead of time waiting for the trucks to come to take them to the shops at the moment X5 group who are the owners of Pyaterochka. This is actually their testing phase that they’re going through with these robots and their Innovation department they trying to find
The best way that they can maximize the usage of these different devices and at the moment they can already see that there’s a 20% increase in productivity just from using these machines even on a small scale like this and the future plan of course is for them to have an entirely autonomous
And robot operated distribution center and I think that’s you know realistically possible down the track and what they’re going to do going forward is retrofit this current distribution center and others around Moscow and Russia and then slowly over time build up to having that
Fully automated distribution center now that’s something I want to come back and make a video about and I’m pretty sure everybody would want to see that as well let me know in the comments but you know these machines are very smart in what they do I must admit while we’ve
Been walking around I’ve been reminiscing a lot of my time working on cruise ships and working in supermarkets in Australia and I do miss this this is something that is absolutely my bread and butter and what I know so well. You can see again the different lanes and just
How high they’re stacked up to the roof there just to see these shelves and how high they are and how much product is on them it’s just impressive in itself there’s Christian again friend oh off he goes the warehouse that we’re seeing here is 24 hours a day and just walking
Around and the amount of these drivers going up and down is just staggering all of the stock ready to go to the stores right here these are all wrapped ready for delivery and then actually we can even see the loading dock where they’ll all go out from right here it’s truly
Fascinating to get a chance to walk around and see all of this in action and all of the processes that go into stocking my local shop my typical supermarket and have a look right there. I can see my favorite drink Chernogolovka Mandarin.
My favorite drink is right on that pallet. I just wonder which shop it’s going to. I hope everyone’s finding this interesting this walk around of the warehouse and to see the Technologies and the potential of robots in use in warehouses and now I’m being very
Careful where I walk here because it’s very specific for safety and you can see also I’ve got the hard hat and a high viz vest on. I’ve even got safety boots that they’ve provided me with as well. I hope this video has come
Out nice and it looks good. There is just row after row of pets and these are all being prepared ahead of time for the truck to come and collect them and take them to the store and then as simple as that the truck backs up to the spot right
Here and then they’re all loaded exactly how they are in order here into the truck where they might actually even do a two shop delivery they’ll have all the pets assigned at the front of the back of
The truck as well it seems like the warehouse is never ending as we’ve been taken around on the tour here and just to see the amount of stock there’s obviously a lot of organization required
In these warehouses so you know every pallet has a barcode on it and it has a location and where it needs to be and then where it will go then to the aisles for picking well you’re can see there how far down the warehouse goes. With the power of editing.
I’m back here at the store and I’m actually looking at that bottle of Chernogolovka Mandarin that we saw on the pallet at the warehouse. And then here it is on the Shelf. Now the sun is beaming through the store from this direction.
We can see all all the different drinks and juices right here and a lot of brands are quite familiar I think to some people maybe to others they’re not the tea and coffee aisle is just here as well it’s
So sunny outside it’s a beautiful day today and I’m in the supermarket making a video I’ve just noticed one more pette here in the shop and this is barbecue coals and we’re barely getting rid of the snow outside and Springtime is a on us and they’ve already got the barbecue coals waiting
For us to start doing barbecuing probably about 3 months from now maybe they’re trying to get us out of the winter and into the summer but basically that pallet would have come from that warehouse that we saw gone onto the truck and brought right to the store like you see so
It turns out Roman who actually just sold me my drink is actually a subscriber to the channel. Thanks Roman for helping out. He’s a little bit camera shy. But, a channel subscriber who works at this store. Now, I’ve been here a few times before.
But I didn’t realize that he knew my videos from the channel oh that Sun as I leave pishka behind and the big mountain of snow that’s slowly melting away and I head on down the road okay everybody so
I’m actually right by my house now maybe if you follow the channel I’ve actually done a couple of apartment tours in this same building I really love to do some more I hope you found this video interesting something a little bit different on the channel it’s not necessarily
A supermarket tour it’s not a warehouse tour it’s a bit of a combination of the two talking about the technology that we saw in the warehouse for pichka I hope it was something maybe that you found a little bit different and I actually enjoyed going to the warehouse I thought it
Was really cool I’ve worked in supermarkets and in retail all my life so see something like that here in Russia and just making a lot of comparisons with what we have in Australia and what they’ve got here in warehouses in Moscow region where we were what do you think about autonomous robots
And robot machines taking over do you think it’ll become a thing or do you think the human element is going to still be necessary for something like you know preparing the pallets to go on the trucks and then the stores let me know in the comments what you think if you like the
Video give it a thumbs up that’s the easiest way you can support the channel if you want to join me on telegram I have a link coming up right now to my telegram Channel and then if you
Want to see an old video on the channel there is a link to a different video on the channel something you haven’t seen before I think. You can click that now if you want to keep Travelling with Russell. Thanks everybody. I’m off on another adventure. Bye.

Always interesting to see behind the scenes and also technology developments. The downside, of course, is likely loss of jobs and unemployment.
This shows that western sanctions have had very little effect on Russia especially regarding Fruit, vegetables, Meat, fish , moreover, as Russia can still trade with 2/3 of the World without having to use western SWIFT or credit debit Cards , the sanctions have backfired onto the EU .
The Russian economy is growing faster than UK or Germany and is it any wonder so many western Business’s are thinking of opening up a branch ( under another name !), in the SCO or BRICS as this is the trade bloc that many are trying to join !
Thanks for sharing Russell and Slava Russia 🇷🇺😉
Ten years in Russia and you still do not understand Russian – all that time down under your convict ancestors never encouraged education
😋
robots for safety? is it a good thing? NO and NO!! it is to reduce labour costs, it is purely for profits!!! and if you think the cost savings will be passed onto the consumers… then you are a total fool!
Thank you,and Hello from Miami Beach ⛱️
Russell, we need a video inside an all you can eat Russian buffet lol
I need those cheese and honey crisps! No chance here in boring ready salted england😆😆this is an absolutely amazing place, so much choice. I would probably need a scooter to get round it all. Thank you so much for the vid.
When all the jobs are being done by robots there will be no jobs for people, then what?
2:32 Is that really good opening hours? Where I live the closest two stores to me are open 24/7. I know there are those is Russia too, as when I visited Moscow last month my friends local Perekrostok was also 24/7
Greetings from Boston from Russian Immigrants since 1992! Yeah ! We know pyaterochka supermarkets from commercials from Russian News РОССИЯ 1 channel
Robots replace paycheques 😢
Cheers to the Colombian bro from Argentina.
Brilliant completely fasonathe 25:33
Russia became one of the greatest countries in the world. So clean and neat. People are the coolest.
Interesante
More propaganda. Which kremlin agency do you work for?
Why is the language on the robot all english? The robots can be male or female, as long as there aren't any "non-hetero-normative" robots. I'm longing for the day that I set foot in Russia, where I will be forevermore.
Maybe you could make a video about products the still available since Soviet times, is that possible?
Way to go Russell great job I work In a big supermarket and I have been to there warehouse and it is big
There is a lot you have shown us. I am sure there is so much more. Many subjects to see!

— Shelezyak's planet. There are no minerals. There is no water. There is no vegetation. It is inhabited by robots.:)
Where do you think the idea of supply chains and distribution centres came from Russ. Along with improved agriculture and food production, product development, quality control etc. Where was Russia after the fall of communism? Do you think it came up with all of this?
I am a systems analyst for WMS of a major USA company. This technology is WAY behind what we have in the USA. They have too many robots…(less robots to do more) They are still at replaceing human labor with robots… we are replacing robotic labor with more efficient systems with less need for robots.
In 20 years all the jobs will be automated! Funny thing is that physical jobs will be the last to automate. IT jobs are disappearing and in 5 years there will be no coders, so if you think about IT career – forget about it!
Thanks for showing how low-skilled workers will be replaced by robots proving the US and Russia share a similar future. 😁
What you fail to report is the quality of the product is horrible.
Dry fruits, fruits, beef everything is of low quality.
And before you people go after me
I do reside in Russia.
And I know this from my daily experience
Great place, well organized, very clean … just one thing about fully automated businesses (not just in Russia, but all over the world) – they usually come hand in hand with unemployment and loss of income for a great number of people!
Wow, something interesting)
I suspect they wanted you to show everyone that Russia has warehouses of food! But it’s only silly people who would think otherwise. I love it when you and other Russian bloggers say how nice the weather is, and I’m wearing a coat in Florida because it’s 60F. LOL
Do they have lumpers for hire to be used by the truckers?
5:25 Had these the other day, I didn't like them, its like candy flavor for chips. Nope.
Very much ending medicine lol
Great i bet chocolate or Chicken Wings was in here
Interesting video, thank you Russell.
