I went to a BRAND NEW Russian Supermarket: Chesnok
Hello everybody. Welcome to Travelling with Russell. Welcome to a new video. Welcome to Butovo here in Moscow. Now right behind me is Viva shopping center. This is a very typical suburban shopping center here in Moscow. But there’s a brand new supermarket that opened today.
I thought I’d take you for a walk around and show you how alive and well retail is here in Russia. Let’s head on inside and check it out if you are a subscriber to the channel and you’ve watched
Some past videos this shopping center might be familiar it’s where I came and made a video about a new Russian Ikea that opened it’s actually on the first floor as we walk in and then on the lower ground floor is where we want to go and see Chesnok a Russian discount supermarket
Now have a look at that sun right there Viva Shopping Center and it’s actually beautiful weather today as well so it’s appropriate that I come on a sunny day to a shopping mall with a big sun on the outside of the building do actually have a question for everybody around
The world who’s watching do they allow pets in the shopping centers where you live let me know in the comments in Moscow and in Russia it’s completely able to be taking pets inside. You’ll see people sometimes with cats but mostly dogs but they do actually have a size requirement
Of how large the dog can be let me know in the comments if there’s a rule where you live about bringing pets to the shopping center or the supermarket walking on inside the shopping center this is very much a typical Suburban shopping center here in Moscow there is probably around
About 100 or more shopping centers in Moscow and this is very normal and very typical now I just had pizza here at dodo pizza and basically it’s the Russian equivalent of Pizza Hut but it’s its own standalone brand. It’s very nice.
Oh! I’m actually still dreaming of that pizza from only 5 minutes ago. Let’s go and check out this store. All of the food and other retail shops are all on the lower level. It’s quite interesting that today
They’ve got the advertising of a couple of the competing Brands the chesnok this is Chik and then on the other side is mayak now I’ve actually got videos on both of those stores also on the channel and we’re going to have to go down one of these travel aters that Tucker Carlson had
Never seen before and I think now every time I ride one I just think of him and we just have to go a couple of minutes down the travelator and around the corner and the supermarket is going to
Appear I had previously come to the shopping center to make a video here at mayak which is a warehouse type supermarket and although these different supermarkets are in the same location they are drastically different inside and again I’ve got a long video on this place as well so we
Want to check that out now doesn’t really look as good as when I came last time but there’s not much we can do it’s really up to the management of this store to sort the look of the place out so where
We want to go is straight ahead of us here this purple colored Supermarket called Chesnok and this is a new company that’s here in Russia. This is actually the 25th location. So it’s a little bit of a milestone for them and it’s the first one in Moscow now predominantly
Most of their locations are outside of Moscow and in other cities but there’s a ring around Moscow which is where Moscow is literally and then the rest would be called Moscow region like where I
Live so we want to go check out chok now you know I always mention this about the balloons and the richest man in Russia is the man that sells air in a balloon and they always have them at
Openings of stores that’s always fun to see. So when I was here about a month ago to make the videos at these other two stores there wasn’t a person around now of course today is the grand opening of this store and there’s just life back in this shopping center and there’s people here
Now of course this store is completely new to this region so I would imagine almost all the people here live immediately where this shopping center is now the one thing that’s interesting it’s not particularly close to housing it’s about a 15-minute walk to the nearest apartment building.
So a lot of people probably drove here or possibly walked there’s a bus stop nearby there is no Metro station anywhere nearby here so it’s very interesting where everybody came from cuz when I was here a month ago at the other stores there was hardly anybody shopping in the stores whatsoever
If you are actually from Russia and you’ve not heard of chesnok it’s okay there’s only 25 of these in all of Russia and they’re in I think it was 16 different cities and they’re not all just
In one place obviously I live in Moscow and Moscow region so naturally I want to make videos close to where I live but that’s a lot of different cities that they’ve got the stores in and chesnok if you translate it into English it’s the word garlic and there is actually a second meaning
Like Chesock like good quality or good shop. I was trying to get a grasp of the translation of it so if you are Russian let me know in the comments what is the actual direct translation of Chesnok in the Russian language. I like to call all my videos Russian typical
Supermarkets and this really is a Russian typical Supermarket it’s very similar to a few other brands but chn really want to stand out from everybody else with a few unique things now we’re going to notice it quite literally as I walk around now the theme and the coloring of
The store this purple color there’s no other Supermarket brand in Russia with this purple color and th now you can see at the top here the character or icon of the brand the piece of garlic there holding the washing detergent and that’s the mascot of the company and the one thing
That’s quite noticeable as you walk in is this bulk packaging display so they’ve got a lot of things that are just on pallets and on boxes and this is completely what they’re idea for
The store is so they cut open boxes they put a sign on them they put them out on display in the front here they’ve got a little bit of household items and perhaps I think this may be a little
Bit seasonal as well so they probably change this you know month over month at the moment it’s coming into spring so there’s a lot of stuff for gardening and then we have here some kavass. Which is a very well-known Russian drink that everybody l loves I might be the only person
In Russia that doesn’t like it a lot and then they’ve even got a little meat section here with some different chicken meat pork so it’s really interesting the layout of the store and how it maybe differs from other supermarkets where you don’t immediately walk in and see fruit
And vegetables and you know the obvious items it’s kind of a bit of a mix of things brand or company is actually from Belarus and their headquarters for the company is in Belarus. They also have offices here in Moscow and other cities as well now.
This is where I want to point this out a little bit on the video and I’ll probably do it quite a few times that they’ve got these different signs where it says we love belus and the products themselves are from Belarus now generally on tags when you go to a Russian Supermarket they’ll
Actually have the price of course the weight the barcode and they’ll have the country of origin right here so this one’s actually from Russia the one next to it is from Belarus and what they’ve done is with all of the Belarus made products they’ve actually got tags or shelf talkers that
Let you know that they’re Belarus products. Now a lot of people already know a lot of the brands from Belarus and maybe it’s not new to them but if you’re coming in here for the first time and you see all the tags you’ll see here even on the peas and the pickled vegetables
There’s a few right here and then anything with that standard yellow one we’ll just basically point out where they’re from so different countries as well but the absolute majority of things in here are from Belarus or Russia. Actually we’ll see some other items from a few
Other countries later on in the video and at the moment the store has 65% of their goods from Belarus. 65%. That’s staggering and for a small supermarket chain I mean 25 stores isn’t a lot if you compare it to Pytorcheka with 21,000 locations so it’s a big deal for them to come
Over to Russia and open up stores. They don’t actually have locations in Belarus believe it or not. They’re basically a new company that’s entered the Russian market and they’re here to mix it up a little bit you’ll also see
On the stickers here the Belarus flag on the whole sign of course so you can actually see where something’s from Belarus and then the milk right here next to it is from Russia and have a look at the difference about 9 rubles cheaper purely because the Belarus company
Has brought it to Russia for domestic sale. Here and of course there’s quite a lot to see in the shop but it’s just interesting you know as you walk around and literally every catgory of food or products as we see them there is at least a Belarus version rather
Than just only Russian products in the store. We can see here I think this is like a coffee powder I’m not too sure but from Belarus and then right next to it there from Italy. So Davide if you’re watching. I might be able to point out a couple
Of more things if I can find them in the store there’s some Italian coffee here in Moscow so if you’re going to come over here you’ll be happy to know that you can find some local coffee so the bulk displays continue throughout the store and it’s pretty noticeable as you walk down the
Aisles that essentially they get the stock in and then stack it up like this and then make sure that they just open that top box for sale and then make sure there’s a sign on it and that’s all
You got to do simple as that I mean it’s not a tough concept to grasp and to do to open a store there is I think some more Italian coffee right here it’s interesting now when you actually look
And see the signs with the the brands on them and I think the lavat right there so if you are from Belarus and you’re watching this let me know in the comments if you notice any products that maybe
You already know from what I’m showing you walk on around or if you’re may be a little bit jealous that I can grab something from Belarus here in Moscow and just the amount of choices of products is quite immense I think that’s probably the best way there’s literally everything you want in the
Whole store made in Belarus in here. If anybody’s wondering about Mondelez and if they’re still in Russia. They are, and the Oreos right here from Russia. So definitely Mondelez has a presence and this is a brand new store. It’s not an old shop that’s been here for a long time oh half
Kilo of gummy bears and only 200 rubles. Has anyone had Belarus gummy bears before. What about cheese puffs and giant bags of them. There’s an entire ballet of cheese puffs right here 60 rubles not even a dollar for a giant bag of cheese puffs I think the whole idea of course
To create these lower prices mean bring things in bulk open the box put it on display and there’s very little manhandling of the products and very little work needed to put them out for sale you
Know simply put a sign on it the price is done now this is the other place where they can definitely create lower prices as well rather than having a whole Bank of refrigerators like any typical
Supermarket would have they basically got a cool room and we’ll be able to just walk right in here and all of the refrigerated items are right here in the cool room and again we’re going to see the
Belarus flags on the shelves where they’re made in Belarus versus made in Russia and fresh milk from Belarus on the shelf today. Rright here everybody is checking out all the products. I think there’s a lot of
People who are probably coming to this brand of store for for the first time so they’re probably very curious about finding products that they probably know from their childhood or from their parents or grandparents and then they’re able to get them here now locally in Moscow and just as
I start walking around a little bit more the fans have kicked in for the cool room they’re probably on some kind of a timer every few minutes they go on and off and I was hoping I could
Get through this part of the video without them coming on but you know sometimes can’t avoid it come around here to all the different hams and cured meats salamis and it’s really like we’re Christmas shopping we’re in a shop for the first time while we’re in here and we’re finding new
Things that we haven’t seen before and especially the fact that the Absolut majority of things are from Belarus rather than Russian produced items now I need everyone to let me know are you a fan of the haridat this is this meat in jelly right here do you enjoy this it’s definitely
Not my favorite thing but my wife loves it and she’s trying to convert me and have me enjoy it somebody just pointed out to me there’s a pate here and you just basically spread it it on to bread and it’s the Belarus alternative to having to go to France.
I’ve not seen this before so it’s quite interesting to see all of the choices of items from you know different places wow all the different hams lots of things and lots of Shoppers very curious as well let me head on outside the fridge now sorry and we can have a look a little
Bit further actually got some cheeses here as well and some more meat and the idea with the store here they’ve not got entire butcher shops they’ve got just simple cuts of meat they have enough
That go out for one day or two days and that’s it and then they move on and get something new and replace it for the next days come outside to the cookie section and biscuits and there’s also
Some candy here by weight which is very normal in all Russian supermarkets but perhaps something a little bit different that I haven’t seen before my wife’s normally a fan of these we’ve always got
A bowl of them on our kitchen table of different trits to have and we’re at the back of the store here and it definitely opens up the whole store how wide it is just just the refrigerate area
Obviously a little bit smaller but you know outside of the hours like today where it’s a newly opened store I’m sure it’s a lot easier to walk around and check out things also got plenty of types of water as well and again that Belarus flag is very prevalent on all the signs.
I don’t think I’ve even had Belarus water before. I don’t remember having some. Has anybody else drunk it. Is there some magical river somewhere that all the water in Belarus comes from. We can see here also there’s some Nestle oats or
Breakfast oats and again these are actually made in Russia right there on the label so if anybody’s curious about the last couple of years and Brands not been available in Russia or the fact that they’ve pulled out or left Russia they’re clearly for sale here in this supermarket and again I’ll
Just point this out this is the first day this store opened today you know this is not a store that’s been here for a year or two and it’s Old Stock this store literally opened lunchtime today
I’m here a couple of hours after the opening now it’s a little bit quieter than when it first open. More of the Kavss right here. Then a little bit further down here something quite interesting that I want to point out to you. If you thought that perhaps Pepsi left Russia
They’re definitely here but this is the Belarus produced Pepsi from the Pepsi Factory in Belarus and they’ve got the two different sizes of bottles there and then we can get the smaller regular ones Miranda we know of course is the orange and drink from Pepsi and then the absolute classic bottle
Right here now it works out at 50 rubles which is right on 50 cents us and if you’re watching from America let me know what a bottle of Pepsi is at the convenience store or Supermarket for a classic bottle of Pepsi I’m fairly sure that the bottle that’s come from Belarus to Russia
Is cheaper than it is coming from the American Factory to your local store and maybe not but let me know in the comments what the difference of price is there’s obviously quite a lot to cover in
This store so I will walk around and just bypass a few things but have a look at all the canned meats and again this whole top row has those Belarus flags on it so it’s just interesting
That alternative that we’ve got now coming to the store here then here we are at the other end with all of the non Belarus made products without that flag there is the pilman here or dumplings
This is by weight so you just scoop what you need and then pay by the gram it’s nice and easy then we come around to their little mini Bakery and they’ve got packaged bread that would come from a local Bakers somewhere probably here in Moscow then they’ve actually got a fresh bread section
We might be able to see the lady back there she’s preparing the bread there and there’s an oven and all of the stuff and then this is literally baked in store so you can get yourself my very favorite
Garlic loaf right here this one and that’s the brown bread version this is my favorite thing oh my gosh I’m going to take one of them home for sure as a person who works in retail since I was
14 years old it’s nice to see Shoppers in the store you know people with baskets with things in it to see excitement in shopping you know I think there’s definitely a bit of a different feeling today as I’m walking around with everybody and their mood about a new store being in the
Area that’s opened and you can see also all the different ketchups now this might be interesting now in Russia very typically they’re all in these pouches with a little lid at the top there then
The Belarus one for 50 rubles is in like a little bit of a a pouch but there’s no way to open it and just let me know in your childhood maybe. If you’re from Belarus or Russia if this is how you bought ketchup. Definitely in Australia we
Don’t have anything like that we’d have it just in the normal plastic or glass bottle. That’s the thing you can get it for 50 cents you don’t have to spend $2 or $3 for something
When you can get it so cheaply in more economical packaging this might be a good yard stick of the cost of food in Russia generally is the salt right here and please let me know where you live what
You’re paying for a bag of of salt or container of salt because 1 kilo is equivalent to 10 cents for a kilo of salt and that is just incredibly cheap I think so but you know let me know is am I missing
Something am I trying to show you low prices to throw you off I don’t think so I mean this is a discount supermarket I mean it is a Russian typical Supermarket as well in this same building
There is three other choices of stores that you can go to that are quite like this but I think this simpler cleaner nicer looking store is really where I want to shop to buy things and we got a
Big wall of La chips right in front of us and over over here the flower and we’re paying basically 60 cents us for 2 kilos of flour I wonder what that difference in price is I think I need somebody to
Go to the stores in America and compare for me 5 kilos of flour is right about $1.70 for a 5 kilo bag really hope you’re enjoying this walk around of chesnok now I was actually excited to come here
Purely because it was a brand new store now I do know this shopping center very well it’s still about an hour and a half for me to get here to this particular store but I just wanted to come
To a new store opening in Russia in 2024 and show you what’s possible what kind of prices things are and how cheap things are really now of course we know Lays perhaps we know Cheetos as well but the Belarus version or at least the comparable product to Pringles is Mega chips and
These are actually in a lot of supermarkets in Russia not just because of this store and they’re basically flat wafer chips it’s not a good example of what they look like but the entire box as you see it it’s a a thin sheet of potato chip and you slide it out and whatever
Flavor that you really want is available now the small boxes here are about 50 and the big ones are around about a dollar so there’s no need for Pringles when you’ve got Belarus Mega chips. I’ve actually had these for a lot of years before this store opened I know them very
Well they’ve actually got the you know we love Belarus sign again right here proudly supporting their country and the flag on the products although I do drink occasionally I’m not you know a person that has beer probably more than a couple of times a month literally and it only
Really if we go to a friend’s house or if we went to a restaurant or a barbecue somewhere that we’d have beer so there’s quite a lot of Brands behind me there of the Belarus beer. Then here is some imported ones that are from Germany. Berliner beer. So what’s happening
Is they’re coming from Europe to Belarus and they come over the border to Russia and that’s how we get German beer in a Russian Supermarket today essentially. We’ve got one aisle to walk around and then we’ll be heading out the exit.
There is just pallets and pallets of beers. Lots of choices anybody had cherry flavored before. Cherry Berry. Maybe this is a cider I think or maybe an Alcha pop. I don’t know it personally. But let me know it’s also the
Washing powder or fabric softener I think this one really is not even $2 for a 2 L bottle I’ve actually found my one other Italian product I’m sure there’s a few more in here and of all things it’s Finnish dishwashing tablets now from Italy not from Finland but the brand Finnish and these
Are from Italy right on € 12 for 110 tablets. So, Davide if you’re watching or anybody else from Italy for that matter. Let me know. Or how about an 8 kilo box of washing powder that is just huge I think these smaller ones
Are bit more practical these buckets right on $5 for a 5 kilo container of Belarus washing powder wow these are really big containers actually here on the other side as well they’ve got the huge boxes of them and I think maybe this one is from Germany up here I think it’s very big
One just basically even the word on the box there definitely isn’t local so yeah lots of very large containers of washing powder and then further down we’ve got some kids products and then toilet roll and then we’re back at the beginning here with the different fruits and vegetables and again they’ve
Got the different countries on them. Azerbaijan, from Russia from Turkey. Wow that’s interesting all the different regions that are covered. Actually it says it right on there turkey on the box of pomegranates now when you’re shopping everybody let me know are you conscious of where they’re coming from if they’re domestically grown
Or if they’re imported let me know if that’s a thing that you’re looking for when you’re in supermarkets now I want to point this out because I made a little bit of a slight miscalculation about this particular brand in another video. I thought it was Italian because it’s called
Amalfi and I was sure that it was Italian when I looked at the brand and then if you actually look closely it’s from Spain so it’s got an Italian name but it’s Spanish shampoo that’s come to Belarus and then made its way all the way to Moscow this
Thing travel more than I have Spanish shampoo. I just looked up my statistics of the Channel and it turns out that 3% of my viewers are actually from Spain so if you’re watching let me know in the comments if you know about a malfie shampoo that we just saw I’m curious now
After seeing it on the shelf and as I almost get to the exit of the store where the registers are right here we can see all the checkouts and then there is a little bit of beer almost like grab
And go that you can get yourself a few cans as you walk out and this is what caught my eye of course everybody knows I like Coca-Cola and then this Pepsi in front of us here is Belarus Pepsi.
It’s even got the new logo on it and this is the 50 c cans of Pepsi and then they’ve got Coca-Cola here and this particular cocacola is from Poland so it’s polish Coca-Cola now there’s not just a
Few cans of it I reckon there’s about a whole pet of it here on the shelf and there’s also the Sprite there and then Fanta it’s right on the bottom shelf but 70 cents roughly US currency for
A Polish cocacola think I need to try one of them as well and if anybody’s a fan of Cherry Coke I don’t really like this personally it’s a little bit too sweet for me there is lots of it here at
Chesnok now everybody around the world I want you to take note of the way Russians do their purchasing now these couple of Staff members here are to assist people with self checkout and there’s not a person doing self checkout and then as I come around to the registers there’s
Actually people lining up to pay at the normal registers with the staff where you pay and it just proves really that people don’t like self checkouts in Russia and they’re more than happy to wait to be helped by the cashier and make their purchase even if you got to wait
3 or 5 minutes in line it’s probably a little bit quicker than that but you know people in Russia don’t like self checkout they’ve got it introduced they’ve got two staff there helping people to show them how to do it and people don’t want to do [Music] it I just realized
I’ve got to walk back to the bakery section to get my garlic loaf so I’m going to go back and grab that and then I’ll do the outro of the video once I get out the store with my
Shopping so as I head on out of Chesnok I think my wife is probably going to kill me because all I’ve got is my garlic bread and my polish cocacola that’s it I’m going to have to sneak
Home and climb in the window and then hope she doesn’t realize that I was here making this video after she watches it she’s going to tell me all the things I should have bought and brought home thanks for watching everybody I hope you liked this video now if you are a fan
Of these Supermarket videos. Let me know in the comments. Please let me know what you you think of them I mean I really wanted to come here today to this newly opened store in Russia to let you know in 2024 that retail is alive and well.
There are shoppers. There is people coming to the stores and how cheap some of the things were. I pointed out a few of the prices here and there but of course if you want to see a standalone video just showing prices I can do that let
Me know and perhaps maybe you saw some products that you recog ni particularly a lot of Belarus products as well I mean that was the majority of things in the store there so let me know that also
In the comments if you did like the video give it a thumbs up that’ll be super nice let me know that you’re watching the videos by doing the thumbs up on them and yeah if you want to follow me on
Telegram I’m out of fingers to point the link to my telegram channel is going to come up right now and then if you want to watch another video that’s going to come up on the side there maybe you want
To watch something different something a little bit older on the channel okay everybody I’m off on another adventure. Bye.

Thanks everoyne for watching. I filmed this literally hours before the recent events in Moscow. I was on my way home from this store as things were unfolding. I am still in shock at what happened, and watching some of the videos of the event is certainly something that will stick with me for long time. I was only at Crocus City on Wednesday, 2 days eariler attending a food expo. I am really lost for words to express my condolences over what happened. I am on Telegram if anyone wants to reach out to me: https://t.me/travellingwithrussell

Does anyone know if the Russian food producers use canola oil and soy in their products ?? It is over-used in the west and it is very hard for me to find food without these poisons.
I don't buy Heinz on principle. I will only buy from Russian or with Russia friendly companies once I am in Russia.
Der Waschkonig basically means the Wash King.
Excuse me for being political but I won't knowingly be buying anything from western countries while their leaders are puppets of the US and UK criminal 1%. Also I have not and will not use self serve checkouts, people are more important than profits for corporations.
Comrade Russell, you are a Russian FSB agent. Thank you very little! (Also, for your own good, please avoid Burger King and McDonalds).
Todo el apoyo a los hermanos de Rusia, toda América (exceptuando estados unidos y cánada) está con ustedes.
❤
When I buy candy in the local Russian/Ukrainian stores in America, they vary from $2.99-$7.99 a pound. I've bought the candies that are $3.99 a pound. I'm not too happy with them. Maybe the higher priced candies are better.
Very sorry for the tragedy in Moscow. Sending blessings and peace to the Russian people. From Los Angeles
Are you okay Russell? How are you and jen doing since the terrorist attack?
Just curious….. whats so special about Bellarussian products vs its Russian counterpart?is it better quality or is it simply because its an import product. If i was a local, id just get the Russian ones 🤔
чеснок – растение ( прямое значение ) и "чеснок", по чесноку ( иносказательное – честно, по честному ). тут скорее созвучное.
garlic is a plant (direct meaning) and "garlic", according to garlic ( allegorical – honestly, honestly). it's more consonant here.
It's not Rode, right? DGI probably.
Chess_Knock.
It's like a Peace_Death or Your_bunny_wrote. (18+)
Been keeping the innocent people of Moscow in my thoughts and prayers 😢 Anyways pets are only allowed into pet stores here in the US. Anywhere else the only animals that are allowed inside are service dogs 🐕🦺 Here in Texas a bottle of Pepsi at my grocery store (Kroger) is about $3 USD
Glad to see you well and live mate!
Security scanner in the entrance and no security around. Hopefully they’ll beef that up after recent events
1:19 sign says "doggies allowed ! Not taler than 35 centimetres"
And reasons are simple: big dogs can do a mess in shopping centres sometimes. And that rule, obviously, have exception, that allows service dogs
По чесноку = fair, no BS, honest
That ketchup packet is a refill obviously. No need to buy another bottle
Россия 🇷🇺
I love the shopping , seeing the stores and prices oh the bottle of Pepsi $2 + a bottle (20 ounces)
Chesnok means, garlic, also you can call chesnok like someone honest, or truthful
