Germany 2023 Part 17: Bamberg, Day 2 #bamberg #germany #travel #bavaria
All right it is our first full day in bomberg it is a cloudy morning it’s actually almost 11:00 there’s the cathedral we’re heading to that is the monastery up on the hill and we’re getting into the alch bomberg but uh this is the ragnet river the other side of it this is
The this the retin rets the right rets and the other one’s the Lincoln rets also known as the mine donow Canal system but uh very pretty even on a cloudy day more old houses lot of houses from the 17 Century 18th century but still a few from the 1600s and
1400s but this is what I like for the platin Ladd so apparently that’s a record store in this old building so after four or five days of uh upper 80s to 90s it’s cloudy and mid-60s today which feels heavenly I’ll even take the clouds and obviously a lot of these things that
Look prettier in sunlight but I’ll take the clouds today uh just cu the sun was so abusively hot the last couple of days a violin maker V hay and he actually sits in the window and you can watch him work right there back there he is I mean weird got
Nonstop traffic coming through but I don’t know if I zoom in you might see them oh my my goodness don’t know how well but there you can see he’s in there working and he works at the window you can watch him work we apparently are here at the wrong
Time of day the traffic is just flying through this little Alleyway over here nonstop a statue and to be honest it kind of looks like it’s based on the guy they found in the uh Italian ospan Al Borderland iy some very cool wall murals here unfortunately there’s construction here
And the construction truck has blocked it but uh been Museum car coming honey uh paper more of a paper shop another car holy cow I mean I know it’s midday but the number of cars coming through is uh rather interesting now we’re getting back to where we were
Yesterday you can see some of the first groups of tourists are really coming out as well you can always tell tourist groups from anything else as typical old world very narrow streets okay yeah all right Jo the area houses they say is that way it’s called the Klein vadi Little
Venice so it’s that way and then the cathedral is this way so we can hit the one maybe on the way back but let’s head up to the cathedral and the square w what we’re all looking at right now I love it when towns do these it’s very
Cool so this is the Dome plots this is the no as down for the Archbishop and is impressive impressive impressive very cool see you can we see over that wall over there get a kind of interesting view over the rooftops of the City and then back to the cathedral the left side not the right side for I think then the next step is to try to work her way over to that corner so we can sort of film this way or take pictures this way I’m just trying to make sure I get
It all in with my eyes and not just the camera I heard it was big it’s it’s big to be honest I think it’s a little bigger than I expected it to be I don’t know why but that’s some of the old fortifications uh that were converted yeah you can see these in
Pictures and even in video and nothing really brings scales of Justice almost I am in the back corner and that’s about the best I could do to get this all in I’ve seen this in so many pictures but here it is unfortunately I can’t go can feel the first few raindrops here
But uh we are at the Dome the cathedral in bomb ER I’ve seen pictures of it and I’ve taught it in class but to actually be here it’s quite impressive and the square it’s the square it’s on is really big and uh clearly some older older fortifications
Like can hear the building behind us is called D NOA residence um I’m trying to remember my German geopolitical history because I believe bomberg was ruled by an Archbishop and so this would have been the archbishop’s residence here um I don’t think uh the nobility there’s a castle
Outside which we haven’t gone to the Ala bu the old fortress okay so they called a Kaiser that’s okay they called a kaisera which meant that the emperor would have stayed here oh wow go over there by construction the monastery for I don’t want to how many times you hear the little kid
Say shy in the last 10 seconds wow fore for speech Foreign they’re rehearsing for a play they’re going to do here oh well if you need a bathroom there here that’s he dance from the other side oh no quite an impressive uh little view have a wedding party it B home yeah yeah for for for for for but
Um very austere for a very very all right um very cool visit nice historical place [Applause] Again it is noon in bomberg and all the various church bells are That’s an interesting layering you got the yellow than the pink and then the Brownstone of the next church over Just definitely one of the more older German towns uh we’ve been in on this trip where it just has that old German feel Little Italy I’ll say one thing about bomberg it just goes on doesn’t it you know it’s like like spot here spot there you just every corner of your
Tri like oh there’s some more old buildings and as I always say you can’t control the weather and you can’t control construction uh but bomberg really is it’s a cute little town it it’s pretty it’s got a lot of old old world to it and it just it it’s maintained a lot
Of it so I’m assuming it really did not take as much severe damage during the 30 Years War but uh and definitely avoided uh I think it really avoided a lot of World War II issues well the other thing would be the tourist shop um straight ahead I’m
Guessing is that look like from a distance like a potential tourist shop all shiny there or is that that Christmas shop yeah excuse us hello I’m going to walk right in front of you and turn every direction while you’re trying to walk past tring to hold this still another little Street shops and
Businesses old buildings back this is part of where we came last night but just all the very it’s not pastels but it kind of is would you call these pastels they’re a little too dark a hue to be pastels but like over there but they’re they’re muted if
They’re pastel but I think the whole point of pastel is it’s not muted well it is a bit steeper than the walk we did okay we are heading up to the Berg all right we’re passing some of the old city walls and fortifications on the outskirts of the Town Islam is
Free I’m making a right muck of it all y see them the fry hair on Al here’s a state I don’t know if I can get more of it in backing up across a little bit uh but now it’s University of bburg school of Economics but they still have
A museum to this uh fry here Lord that now that’s how I said it’s taking us a weird Direction but that’s Google don’t never get the same directions twice right we need to cross here while we can it’s like but it says altenberg this way down now we go back
Down all right probably the first time you’ll actually hear me out of breath on camera while hiking we have been hiking up a very Steep Hill there a car coming up as well as behind us I don’t know you could see the grade of this hill it’s
Steep and we’ve been going up at for about 20 minutes but we just turned back other than the stupid Street pole here waiting for these damn damn cars to get out of the way but uh you turn around for a second and wow that’s a great view of uh
The T of bomberg the monastery over there which is a different Hill and you have to take a different path from what we started and circle back around to it um we might do the moner on another day but we are andion may have notice where we were absolutely
Sweltering the last many days in the mid3 degrees uh it is uh 18 yeah 18 or 19 Celsius right now yeah it’s 18 so uh the co zipped up until we got this far up the hill yeah we’ve built up a good sweat hiking and we’re in good shape we
Really are and we’ve we’ve been hiking in the Black Forest steep hills but this is a pretty continuous it just it goes straight up there’s no winding leveling off bit they it’s a it’s a strict steep curve okay more later just getting there so that’s where we’re
Heading the remains of the castle ruins and remains there’s parts of that are still intact other parts that are ruins so as you can see we still got a ways to go and we’ve come up quite a ways again I don’t think the camera captures the steepness
Cuz this is the first time I’ve breathed heavy going uphill all right we are heading up steps now to get to the castle we just passed the park plots and Joyce accidentally put the water bottle without its cap on in her bag and soaked everything in her bag including her passport
Oops we’ve made it to the top right under the Tower oh we’re at it to the castle so we’re at the top that’s a big we got to go up to the castle but in a way it’s suddenly very reminiscent of the Marksburg when we would have to walk up
And finally got to the stairs which we knew was the last jaunt the kids hadn’t seen the castle from the walk yet and then all of a sudden we get to the stairs and they can see the castle at the top of the stairs a wall the castle
And then we had to go through the main gate yeah Li we weren’t to the top we have one more set of stairs to go and then we’re going into the gate house yeah yeah the it rained today it’s been drizzly so these stones are wet and slippery all right we’re getting ready
To go in the castle I don’t know at this stage drying in your purse or drying in there is not going to be any different drying it in your pocket I just say drop it off while we’re thinking of it aie it’s in your
Pocket is it no you put it in your coat pocket I put in my co want to slip that back on just over your shoulders well we all know how much I love castles going dead ahead well I’m just saying you know looking at the castle walls here from the
Side toall house built in 1450 huh there you go some more cannons and mortars you just passed a recycling bin all right well just over there then for there’s your one view that’s a heck of a view you can see the monastery down over there and we’re staying somewhere out there
But you can see the you can see the distant Hills there’s some of the old outer walls and Towers little remnants you know you got a another area down in here which would have been a secondary edition of course back in the days this would have been cleared a tree so it had
A clean line of sight and to the village and everywhere else the tower well sistern okay gotcha well if you wanted to do an early dinner we could eat here just for the hell of it okay sounds cool oh look at the steam coming off the mountain can you see it
Back there ohome yeah they want kept a bear in there yeah apparently they had a lot of misbehaving folks that’s a pretty big stock right there unfortunately you can’t go through there but you can’t go up to the top of the turret here all right I can’t go any
Further but what a view though I’m not going to the top of the main tower but oh these uh security irons need to be about 16 in taller at least a foot taller with more below them yeah you can go up the tower I I don’t want to okay just so people
Understand we’ve uh when we talk about how steep this hill is it’s a 14% grade now of course we just went down and up but yeah it’s a 14% we just had had dinner forgot to film we we had dinner in a nice little Hall up there it
Was an old German style uh beer haul and restaurant it was really cool very small even though it was a beer hul but but it was the old dining hall of the castle and uh should have taken pictures but we were enjoy we were enjoying ourselves too
Much we were enjoying ourselves too much to break out the cameras we also sat out a rainstorm and waited but uh funny story uh the waiter when I ordered a beer and was about to order a pills he looked me in the ey says you don’t want to pills you you’re going to
Try a Keller version of the beer right Keller is a way it’s produced but it’s uh but uh he basically dared me to try what he says is the best beer he’s ever had it was very good I don’t know if it was the best beer I ever had but it was
A very good but it was a it was a golden beer and uh probably in the lagger family but really good yeah they do I from here with the wide screen on my video I can actually get everything from the monastery up on that Hill through to the main Cathedral over to St
Michaels so I get all the towers in except for the tower over there I think this is Michael’s now cuz the other one was a cluster I don’t know if you’ve taken one from this angle but I can get it all in on portrait mode that’s interesting what hega lived here hegelian
Philosophy lived here when he ran the Bamberg right we got the Old Mill works with the new Mill works but this is not the view I’m here for as clol as this view is this is not the view I’m here for I’m waiting for everybody to go that’s the view I’m here
For and sadly all right Joy t i one more of these great famous views of bber very cool we just hiked down from the mountain it’s a cloudy day it’s actually sprinkling little bit of Meel so H C really really it’s controlling the the water why to step down probably me down we’ll flip it there you can see yeah a 2 drop they use this to control and generate some electricity
Our full day trip under cloudy skies. We go to see the Cathedral and the surrounding complex, the heart of the city, and later we hike up a steep incline to see the castle (Altburg). We had two days of clouds in Bamberg. Hopefully the sun shows soon.
