¿Conoces la Suiza de Franconia?
Our morning tour starts in the city of Forchheim, this is also a medieval city. Very picturesque, not as old as Bamberg, but also quite unscathed by the Second World War. Therefore, it has many buildings that must be between 200 and even 300 years old.
They just told me that that corner house that they are restoring has been in the restoration process for 5 years. So apparently they are building it again. I would dare to say that every city, no matter how small, always has some interesting anecdote to tell us throughout its history.
Well Forchheim is no exception. Here we can reveal the importance of the Forchheim fortress. Unfortunately we will not be able to see it from here, since it basically surrounded the city and the vestiges that remain are on the outskirts of the city.
But hey, what is the importance of this fortress or what is the story it is going to tell us? It turns out that this fortress was crucial in the 30 Years’ War between Protestants and Catholics.
Since basically it was the one that stopped the Swedish invasions that came here seeking to convert to Protestantism. And today we could say that thanks to the fortress of Forchheim, Bavaria is still Catholic. We arrive at Forchheim Castle. It certainly looks like a building more than a castle.
And what we now see with grass and games around it, was formerly a water moat. But not all castles stand as medieval stone structures. As depicted in fairy tales. Buttenheim is the gateway to Frenkische Schweiz, which translates as, Franconian Switzerland.
Franconia is this region in southern Germany. And why did this part become popular as Franconian Switzerland? Well that was due to a Swiss writer in the year 1900 who kept a travel log, and published his trips in a newspaper column.
Well his column was tremendously popular and when he traveled to this region of Germany, he described it as a memory of his homeland of Switzerland. He says that both the natural landscape and the settlements reminded him of home. And so he named it, Franconian Switzerland.
And to this day it is known as Franconian Switzerland. We have arrived at our accommodation in the center of Buttenheim. and it seems we arrived just in time to celebrate a birthday. Here on the street, right in front of our hotel,
They are putting together a quermes, which is basically the celebration of the church’s birthday here. There will be live music, food and a lot of beer until very late into the night. We are in one of the most beer-producing regions in Germany.
In fact, there are more than 70 breweries in Fränkische Schweiz alone. And more than 500 different types of beer. And believe it or not, each type of beer has its own clearly distinguishable taste. For beer professionals only. Here we have a family brewery for example that dates back to 1624.
We are also going to briefly greet the birthday boy. This is the church of St. Bartholomew in Buttenheim. A Catholic church that has several phases of construction, for about 240 years. But the initial date is 1513 and today its 510th anniversary is celebrated.
We have reached the end of our journey today, today we return to our homes. In my case it would be about 3 hours of travel north. I say goodbye with the image of Buttenheim Palace behind me. This Palace dates back to 1774 and is currently one of the city’s monuments.
