Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus, is an island nation situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, with cultural ties to Southeast Europe despite its geographical location in West Asia. It is the third-largest and third-most populous island in the Mediterranean. Its capital is Nicosia, and the northeast portion of the island is governed by the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Human activity on the island dates back to around the 10th millennium BC, with well-preserved ruins from the Hellenistic period. Throughout its history, Cyprus has been occupied by various powers, including the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, and Ottoman Empire. It was formally annexed by the UK in 1914, leading to tensions between the Greek Cypriot majority and Turkish Cypriot minority.
Independence was granted in 1960, but intercommunal violence erupted in the 1960s. A coup by Greek nationalists in 1974 prompted a Turkish invasion, resulting in the division of the island. Northern Cyprus declared independence in 1983, though only recognized by Turkey.
Despite its political complexities, Cyprus is a popular tourist destination and boasts an advanced, high-income economy. It joined the European Union in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2008.
