7 day Road Trip around Albania. Jan/Feb 2024. #albania #travel #roadtrip

Our seven days in Albania started and ended at Tirana Airport. We collected our hire car, with 259,000km on the clock and made Kruja our first stop. After looking at the Castle and Old Bazaar we moved on to Shkodër for our first night. The Mesi Bridge and Rozafa Castle were the highlights.
The following night was spent in Durrës which had a great seafront where we were treated to a terrific sunset in the early evening. Our next night was spent in Vlorë after a drive of 123km. We had visits to Zvërnec Monastery and Kaninë Castle. A kind fella at Flamurtari Football Club let us have a quick look inside the stadium.
Berat was our next stop where we looked at the castle in the afternoon, this gave great views of the surrounding countryside. The cathedral, mosque and Gorica Bridge are close together in the centre of town.
After four nights on the road we then finally arrived in the capital, Tirana, for three nights.
We found traffic to be heavy and often chaotic in Tirana, fortunately most of the city could be seen on foot.
On our second day we drove the 19km to Lake Bovilla. This bright blue lake supplies drinking water for most of Tirana. After paying 100LEK (around $1) we were able to climb the steps, pinned to the cliff face, for the most spectacular views at the top. This was well worth making the effort to see.
On our third day we took the Dajti Ekspres cable car, not a lot to see at the top but great views over the city. On the way back to the centre we stopped at the stadium of FK Partizani.
This diverse city is full of surprises and very good value for money by western standards.
We had a fantastic week, met the friendliest of people, drove a total of 742km, and would love to visit again one day.
