What American Tourists Do That Annoy Italians
CH fellow Travelers Mark here with Walter’s world and today we’re here in bar on the pat meranti a fantastic place to visit and meet locals when you’re here in baring and and when you’re traveling around Italy one of the best parts of being in Italy are the people
The thing is though whenever you travel and you want to meet the locals you want to make sure you don’t upset them so what I have on here is few things that tourists do or could do when they’re here in Italy that might upset the locals and I got to start with this
Though in general it is extremely difficult to upset the Italians they are so laid-back they are so chill they’re so cool and they’re so happy about where they live and so proud of Italy they’re pretty much fine with anything so don’t think that you’re really going to get
Too many upset locals but these are just a few things that might might upset them a bit and I’m going to start off with one that I’ve done myself and I didn’t realize what a faux Paul it was until my friend explained it to me and that is if
You’re invited out for dinner with people like as a guest and you pay that is a big affront to them that is a total no no like you will hear about it for months and months and months I’m sorry Nando I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry okay
I’m sorry I didn’t know because that’s one thing is the attal they want to show you a good time that they invite you out to dinner that’s them inviting you out and so then they usually pay but if it’s like a friendly we’re going together
Then we both pay right but it was an invitation and it’s slav somebody’s family don’t try to sneak off and pay the bill because it might lead to some discussions later on okay so that’s one thing I want to say um another thing that I think tourists don’t realize they
Do but it can make a big impact and it might it doesn’t necessarily upset the people but it’s really appreciated is if you don’t try at least a few Italian words don’t just come in like I want this be like Chow I mean literally just Chow which is high or bonjo which is
Good day and then switching to English or German or whatever will go a lot farther than just starting English or starting in German so not not at least trying a few words in Italian I mean come on you know enough Italian just from the labels on you know tomato
Sauces poo which is you’re welcome and all just think about that just try a few things if you don’t that might upset the locals a little bit but you probably wouldn’t notice it it’s more one of those things that they appreciate more than they’re upset by now if you want
Something that might get you upset it might get you in trouble is if you wear the football jersey or the soccer jersey for a rival team in the wrong City now I love lardi okay that’s our team of Venza but you know what we went to Verona
Which is their biggest rival and I made sure that Li and I did not wear any of our lard Roi any of our Venza ccho gear because sometimes you just get a word here or there or sometimes it’s late night it can be there can be issues so
Just know that but I will say if it’s a kid or if you’re obviously a tourist you’ve got like a Milan Jersey cuz they know that that’s the only one that you know tourist know about or Juventus usually going to be okay but do be aware that the ccho the soccer football
Rivalries here are a real deal and if you’re on the wrong side that might get a few people upset now another thing that might upset your local friends when you’re here in Italy is if you say oh the North and the South of Italy are the
Same I’ll tell you right now the north has very definite opinions about the south of Italy and the south of Italy has very definite points and ideas about Northern Italy and there is a little bit of frustration between the two and if you kind of brush that out of the world
And say oh they’re all the same no no no if you’re in the South they’ll be upset if you’re in the north they’ll be upset and if you want to know those differences just ask a local they’ll be glad to share them with you and continuing on with the no differences
Upsetting people kind of motif another thing is tell them there’s no difference between pasta all the pastas are the same so it doesn’t matter what pasta I get with my Bolan or I get with my carbonara or I get with my whatever vong oh it matters and here pasta is a
Regional thing they have the pastas that is for them here you’re going to have oretti little ear pasta that is a thing I hear in bar you actually watch old ladies making them and not so old ladies making it you’re up in the north you might have bigly other places it’s just
Different pasta and different places if you say it’s all the same oh you will get some blowback there because this is very much a regional country with regional foods and Regional pastas so make sure you’re eating whatever the local stuff is to keep on friendly terms with the waiter and whether it’s a
Waiter or it’s a local or someone you meet at a Paro time another thing that might upset locals or not upset them but just make them wonder what’s up with you is if you don’t share things about yourself Italians are gregarious they love to talk they love to meet people I
Mean you can’t not make friends in Italy it’s like impossible not to make friends but they want to know stuff about you and if you kind of hold it in and don’t share things about yourself the times are like what’s up with him why is he talking what is he like introverts are
Going to have a hard time here because Italians really want to know oh where are you going what have you like what did you eat when you were there what do you think about this they are very much a talkie-talkie like let’s all learn about each other kind of thing and
That’s why it’s so fun to make friends here because they want to make friends and if you’re not sharing things that kind of puts them in the wrong light when they look at you now probably the worst thing you can do when you come to Italy is deny their mama or their Nona
The respect that she deserves for being the greatest cook in Italy is if not the world look Italians especially Italian men have a definite opinion about how wonderful their mom’s cooking is and if you do not say that their mom’s cooking is the best you’re probably going to
Have some issues cuz I know my my buddy Nando his mom actually really does make the best bigly canarana the bigly with the duck rag goo sauce that I’ve ever had in my entire life and I’m not just saying that because I have to say that I’m saying because it’s true so don’t
You dare not give respect to Mama or no not that’s grandma by the way because they are excellent cooks and and if you’re not sure how much the Italian men love their their their moms uh don’t look up how far the average Italian man lives from their mom yeah it’s not very
Far and one thing you’ll learn with all those mamas cooking for you and the nonas cooking for you is this look don’t think that all the food here is pasta and pizza cuz that kind of upsets the people like yeah we love our pasta we
Love our pizza but we got great Meats we got great salads we’ve got just great all kinds of stuff when you’re here and you’ll notice that some the pastas you really love and you know you might not see on the menu in the summer because oh
That’s too heavy of a dish we go for lighter Fair like the salads or just having some melanin and ham and prut or whatever so there’s so many different foods here that if you say oh it’s just Pasta and Pizza in Italy that’s all they
Have oh no no that that’s not going to go over well and that’s why is if you’re here and you profess your love for craft macaroni and cheese back in the US or spaghetti and meatballs or pretty much any pasta Alfredo yeah they’ll just look at you and be like you poor
Poor p because here’s the thing spaghetti and meatballs not really a thing in Italy okay cuz meatballs is a meat dish which would come second pasta is a PR Pi a first plate so they’re going to be separated if an Italian saw you putting powdered cheese together to
Make mac and cheese they’d probably die right away going what are you doing so that’s one of those things don’t get me wrong I love my craft mac and cheese but I had that back in the US not now when I’m in Italy but seriously if you if you
Kind of compare it Italian American food or Italian Finnish food or Italian South American food they will they’ll be like yeah that’s nice but we have our real Italian food here so just be aware that sometimes when you bring over some of your Italian authentic Italian dishes
From the US or other places to here they won’t take kindly when you compare them now another thing I think is important this one thing I noticed when I travel around Italy is everyone in Italy dresses really well they all are put together it doesn’t matter if it’s a
Waiter or if it’s a driver or if it’s someone in the museum or just people walking around people dress nicer here they have they just have style whether it’s their hair or or their clothes or their whatever like it’s just a different vibe when it’s here and and if
You come dressed as a slob it’s not that they’re upset by it it’s just that they’re like oh well you know you could try a little more but I will say when I see tourists coming to Italy they do up their game okay notice all my Italy
Videos this year I’m always wearing my colored shirt to look good in right cuz I’m trying to look a little better I mean yes I’m a fat sweaty Pig it is like 90° right now I’m dying but hey I’m at least trying to look nice I got a nice
Pair of pants on too ha so that is one thing and and another thing oh this is one it’s not really like upsetting them it’s just more this should be more like eye rolling stuff is if you ever order a cappuccino or any kind of coffee with
With lots of milk after about 11:00 in the morning the locals are like what are you doing like that’s one of our things if you know it’s a tourist trap restaurant if they have cappuccino on the dinner menu because Italians really don’t put milk in their coffee after
About noon or 11:00 that’s a morning thing okay so if you ask for cappuccino in the afternoon they expect a okay so not really upsetting them but just eye rolling them for sure and then I’ll finish off with this one and this is kind of a serious one is I know when we
Think of Italy a lot of people think of the mafia and stuff like that and one of the things is if you ask people oh are you in the mafia or do you know people in the mafia look if they were or if they knew people they were they’re not
Going to tell you and that puts them in an uncomfortable position which makes you look bad so try not to put them in un comfortable position and don’t ask if they’re in the mafia right so I hope this helps you know a few things you can
Make sure you don’t do to upset your Italian friends when you come here because I’ll be honest with you if you spend any time in Italy you will make friends when you’re here because the people are amazing all right so I’ll say ciao from here in Bari and have a great
Time in Italy
Heading to Italy and don’t want to upset the locals? Well here are the common mistakes that tourists make that really do annoy Italians. From not knowing the right foods to picking the wrong teams to cheer for in Calcio.

Hello there , nice video your videos were really useful when i travelled to the US, but as a italian myself I'd like to point out a couple of things that seem a lilttle off to me : not all italians are extrovert and whant strike up conversaton to whoever and share personal information nor are that toucht touchy, not all italians pay so much attention on how they dress indeed some are slobby too , Finally nowdays is no more considered a crime ordering a cappuccino and or even less a " caffè macchiato" after noon, I sometimes drink one of those late in the day .
the north south thing is applicable in the US too 😂😂
In Milan I wore my Inter jersey and caught heck from the AC Milan fans. All in good fun
These kinds of videos always make Italians seem stuck up. Literally nobody cares if you order a cappuccino after 11am and lots of Italians do it. It's more about not having it with/after a big meal. 11am is an arbitrary number, what if you work the night shift and don't wake up until after noon and want a cappuccino at 2pm? Not everyone wakes up at the same time and has the same schedule 😂 I never eat breakfast sometimes I will have cappuccino in the afternoon before I even had a meal. Things are not this rigid and old fashioned in Italy.
If they hear you taking about the history of the country in the 30s you’ll get some looks. I know from experience lol
I speak a bit of Italian and I’m a dual citizen. 99 percent of the time they will appreciate you speaking Italian but will reply in English. 1 percent of the time, and this happened to me at Palazzo Pitti, I had a barista yell at me to speak English. He was a huge jerk that didn’t want to humor my admittedly bad Italian but everyone else was super nice. Also Prego almost a universal greeting over there not just “ your welcome “
North is the more right wing part of Italy. The south is also pretty right wing but central Italy is more immigrant friendly and I preferred Florence to everywhere else I have been ad Italia.
Osteria Del Fortunata sta il migliore cibo della citta di Roma. La pasta e moltissima bene.
If you order coffee to go say “ per asporto”
“Ciao buongiorno, or “giorno” prendo un caffe per asporto, e basta. Grazie”
They don’t do coffee to go in paper cup that often and I just got a weird look when I asked for it in Naples but they accommodated me and the coffee is THE BEST. I wish oooooh I wish we had walk up espresso bars in the US.
We are in Puglia now, our fourth week of five. Love, love “, love Italy!
Are you from Belgium, I noticed your son had a Belgian soccer jersey?😊
As an Italian
1# Don't f*ck with our food
2# Respect people, culture and cultural places
3# Enjoy yourself, Italia is beautiful ❤️
If we say what Tourist do in America that annoys us, we’re considered the R word lol
You mean try and speak Italian while your buying all the crap they are trying to sell ? Yea I don’t think to much so
I lived in Pordenone in Friuli-Venezia Giulia . Italy is rapidly a great country. Mark I think Brasil may be your favorite place but Italy is mine.
This video is funny. But very informative. Thank you Mark.😆
Engrave initials on the Colliseum.
Sorry, but this is an attitude I have often seen: "I want two subway tickets." For us Italians, not saying hello or saying thank you after you are served is extremely rude. We are very pleased if someone says buongiorno and grazie. Nobody expects you to speak Italian, but a smile, an effort, and good manners are greatly appreciated.
The things is that some people, especially from non-European countries, think that mafia and Italian gangsters are some kind of Hollywood invention, or something that has to do with the past. They don't know that mafia is still here today, and it's pretty strong too. They may not shoot on the streets like they did in the past, but they still proliferate with their illegal activities. So asking someone if they are involved in mafia is definitely a douchebag thing to do. I mean, my reaction would be "What the f***?".
Born and bread in Italy, many generations of Italians losing to the past. I can confirm what he says it’s all true, and yet it’s all false when it’s about me. Maybe, I was from another country in my past lives lol 😂
I was waiting for the one of cappuccino after 11 am… It's simply not true. I drink cappuccino whenever I wish and it's just fine! Maybe at the end of a dinner late at night is not common to ask for it, but even then, the restaurant won't tell you nothing and will just do it!
Great video. Agree everyone in Italy dresses so well. It’s crazy
I just got back from Rome. I didn’t feel like the folks were that laid back and friendly. Everyone seemed so rushed. In some cases they made us feel uncomfortable especially when they were rude to my senior mom. Literally in the Vatican they yelled at my mom when she didn’t know how to scan her ticket. It made me so uncomfortable and sad. I want to go back and hopefully have a better experience. I will say that our waiters and the folks at our hotels were super nice. I think we probably just bumped into some grouchy folks this time.
Women from Milan dress to the 9's. Along the Cinque Terre hike I ordered a HOT cappuccino. They were pushing COLD cappuccinos. It reminded me of Dick's last resort in the U.S. where they give the customer a hard time. I insisted using some Spanish to emphasize 'hot'. The waitress laughed but knew what I wanted. I like a hot drink during a hot day sometimes. It's just the way I was brought up. After watching this video it makes me wonder if this was another cultural error. I probably would have insisted on a hot drink either way. LOL. The manager came by when I was in the restroom complaining to what he thought was my wife that 'Your husband, he no change." Sorry, this just added to my enjoyment.
100% on the football shirt thing.
In the UK (and across Europe) you also need to remember that many major cities have multiple football teams (Glasgow, London, Manchester, Liverpool etc in the UK) and these rivalries can be intense as they often include historical/political factors too.
So even if you're wearing a football shirt from a team in the city you're in, if you walk into a bar in another part of town there might be problems. This is true for many major cities in Europe.
Yo mann vicenzaaa my cityy❤
Fast Fashion is over rated and destructive to the planet. Stick with something well made and versatile that will not go out of fashion every 12 months regardless of what is fashionable at the time in Italy or other parts of Europe. Be eco minded.
02:20 I know this problem from Roma, where my dad wear a baseball cap of AS Roma in a Lazio Roma district. But at most time the people know that you are tourists. Maybe you get a little joke about that. It is in Germany similar.
Also, pizza was regional. My great-grandmother had never heard of it until she immigrated. They ate white beans in a soup, and, occasionally, rice. They ate marinated steak, pickled vegetables, a lot of baked chicken, and prosciutto, and various Italian cookies.
The tendency tourists have of using Spanish as a substitute for Italian is way more annoying than speaking no Italian at all. also , you can have a "Latte Macchiato or "caffé macchiato" after 11 without raising any eyebrows , just don't drink it with your lunch.
In Rome if you invite it is not expected that you pay, you can do it, but it is not a must!
All I can do is laugh 😂😂😂😂
I got 3 serious, older Italian women sitting on a bench to give me a high five. They weren't thrilled. The third one hated it. 🤣
Thank you for the inside information!
That first example was heartwarming :3 These cross-cultural misunderstandings can pretty amusing. I can imagine a situation where Wolter, being an outgoing and unfailingly considerate American, wanting to show his gratitude for his Italian friend's invitation to eat with them by helping pay for their meal. Meanwhile his Italian mate is just "what are ya tryin' say, that I can't afford to take my friends out for food?!" xD
The point about the north/south divide of Italy was a salient one. I'd say it's good practice to learn at least a little of the history of whatever region of Italy you're travelling to, because regionalism is fairly serious business in the Apennine Peninsula. It's only relatively recent in history that a unified contemporary nation of "Italy" came about at all, having been made up from a staggering number of independent city states and principalities to form the country we see today.
You are the best man! I started watching your vídeos in Germany, now we're in italy and your comments are still very, very valuable, great job
Putting pineapple on pizza will upset them most
Did or tried to do all those things and even not really buying Cappuccino after 11. But a shop owner told my Wife who cares order what you want. I know there’s an exemption to every rule. Except that death thing.
all correct. the thing that shocks me most about Americans in Italy is the lack of aesthetic sense, the total sloppiness in dressing. I'm also amazed at how extremely different they are from us Italians but they don't realize it very much. Talking about the national kind of crime it s offensive and rude.
No mention of restaurants in Italy not giving you ice in your drink, even in the summer? I have been to Rome, Florence, and Milan in the summer and they're all doing this. The McDonalds gave ice in the drink, but very little. Why? Do they think it's ok to have room temperature water when it's super hot outside?
the way you dress is not so important, we know that nobody can be as dapper as we are 😂 I think that the most annoying thing in this list is the language one: we are well aware that Italian is not commonly spoken by foreigners but we at least expect the “excuse me, do you speak English” question. Starting immediately in English, assuming that everyone should speak your language, is rude.
