Our Lady of the Rock

Imagine an island that didn’t exist until humans  decided to create it. This is the story of Our   Lady of the Rock. Nestled in the heart of the  beautiful Bay of Kotor, in the Adriatic Sea,   this man-made marvel has a story as enchanting as  its surroundings. Our tale begins in the fifteenth

Century, with two humble fishermen brothers from  Perast. On a fateful day, they discovered a small   icon of the Madonna and Child resting on a rock  protruding from the sea. Believing it to be a   divine sign, they made a solemn vow to build  a church on the site in honor of the Virgin

Mary. The task was monumental, for there was no  island, just a solitary rock. But the brothers   were undeterred. They started a unique tradition:  after every successful voyage, they would throw   a rock at the site where they found the icon.  Over time, this tradition was embraced by the

Entire community of Perast. Year after year, stone  after stone, a small islet began to take shape. As   the islet grew, so did the people’s devotion.  The tradition evolved into an annual festival   called ‘Fasinada’. Every July 22nd, an impressive  flotilla of boats loaded with stones sails to the

Islet. In a beautiful ceremony, the stones are  dropped around the islet, gradually expanding its   boundaries. Finally, in the seventeenth century,  after over a hundred years of collective effort,   the island was large enough to hold a church.  The church of Our Lady of the Rock was built,

Its blue-domed structure standing as a testament  to the faith and determination of the people of   Perast. Today, the church houses a rich collection  of art and relics, including the original Madonna   and Child icon that started it all. It stands as  a beacon of faith, a symbol of human tenacity,

And a testament to the transformative power  of tradition. Thus, from a simple rock in   the sea, a cherished sanctuary was born. Every place has its legends, and Our Lady of   the Rock is no exception.” In the heart of the Bay  of Kotor, this man-made island whispers stories of

Miracles and deliverance. One such tale is steeped  in the faith of a gravely ill woman, whose life   was hanging by a thread. Desperate for a miracle,  she made the journey to the island. There,   she prayed fervently at the Church of Our Lady  of the Rock, her pleas echoing through the silent

Halls. And then, something remarkable happened.  The woman, previously on the brink of death,   found herself healed, her vitality restored. Word  of this miracle spread like wildfire, and soon,   the island was imbued with a reputation of  divine intervention and healing. But Our

Lady of the Rock’s legends don’t end there.  Another tale tells of a group of sailors,   trapped in the throes of a merciless storm. With  their ship battered and their spirits waning,   they turned to the island’s church, praying for  salvation. In the face of the roaring storm,

They found calm. As if by divine  intervention, the storm subsided,   saving the sailors from their perilous fate. This  miraculous event solidified the island’s status   as a protector of seafarers, a beacon of hope  amidst the turbulent waves. “Our Lady of the Rock,

A testament to faith, miracles, and the  unyielding spirit of the human heart.   Our Lady of the Rock is just one of the many  wonders nestled in the Bay of Kotor.” This   enchanting bay, a UNESCO World Heritage  site, is a tapestry of natural beauty

And historical significance. Imagine a place  where rugged mountains meet the serene sea,   where centuries-old architecture whispers tales  from the past. This is Kotor, a charming haven   that promises unforgettable experiences. “To  experience the magic of Kotor and its crown jewel,
