🇬🇧Don’t know where to travel for the weekend? It’s time to visit the easternmost town of the Republic of Croatia – Ilok. All you need to take along the way is the good will and energy to drink high quality wines all day long. Ilok is an old royal city that is developed on the Danube river, between the slopes of Fruska Gora. It is located in the historical region of Srijem. You can experience the history of Ilok at the Museum of the Town of Ilok, formerly the castle of the Odescalchi family, located in the old town. Besides the Museum, in the old town you can visit the Ilok Park, the Church of St. John Kapistran and drink a glass or two of quality wine and visit the wine cellars from the 15th and 18th centuries in the restaurant “Stari podrum”. You should also taste some of the traditional meals: the “Iločki čevap” ( pork steak with a spicy sauce and masjed potatoes, čobanac (a kind of stew, mostly made of pork or beef and “Srijem” pancakes (pancakes filled with ground walnuts, raisins and sauce).Except for visiting numerous wineries in Ilok, you can take a stroll through the noble vineyards and fields in Ilok. When you’re done with vineyards, vist also the Principovac country estate, take a selfie for the Instagram and enjoy the view. Then head down to the Danube river and enjoy the flow of this mighty river.

ILOK GRAPE HARVEST The most famous one is the “Ilok grape harvest. The wine harvest of Ilok, a cultural, entertainment, economic and tourist event, has been taking place traditionally since 1962. It was born out of an old custom originating from the area of Srijem and Slavonia, where people gathered at the beginning of the wine harvest for the purpose of guarding the vineyards, celebrating a good year and harvest, and socializing.These days, the wine harvest of Ilok has grown into an important event of ethnographic, wine-making and tourist character which lasts several days and has been attracting an increasing number of guests and visitors of different programmes. The main part of the programme takes place at weekends, with cultural and entertainment events taking place during the day and in the evening. The programmes, which include about 400 participants, are attended by about 8,000 visitors. The patrons and honorary participants of the Ilok wine harvest have been the Presidents of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, the Presidents of the Parliament and other high-ranking officials, which confirms the importance of this event and provides support to the revitalization of Eastern Slavonia. The sponsors of the event are the town of Ilok and the Tourist Community of the Town of Ilok.2. VINKO’S FEASTThe celebration of Vinko’s Feast (Vinkovo) in the winegrowing hills of Ilok and Srijem is an old custom that takes place every year on 22 January.It includes a folk and religious ceremony of vineyard blessing, and merrymaking to the sound of the tamburitza players and enjoying fried sausages, bacon and wine in the vineyards and wine cellars of the winegrowers. To come to Ilok on Vinko’s Feast is the right move, as you can expect good wine, homemade food and songs throughout the vineyards on the hills as well as in the wine cellars in the town. 3. CAPISTRANO DAY The anniversary of St. John of Capistrano’s death is marked on 23 October, which is also the Day of the town of Ilok, and includes a series of religious, cultural and similar events every year.4. ACTOR’S FESTIVALA unique acting and theatrical event which takes place every May. During one week, Ilok becomes open stage for almost all the theatres from Dubrovnik, via Pula, to Zagreb and Osijek.Some other entertaining events include the tasting and assessment of wines from the Danube basin and Slavonia . On “ordinary” days in Ilok, you can walk in the parks and along the Danube, go cycling, hunting or fishing, or spend your time on sports terrains.
