(Tokyo Travel Idea) Local Big Town for Families Kinshicho, Sumo Wrestler Town Ryogoku Station Ep.462
[MUSIC] Hey guys! Welcome back to Rion’s TV! What a beautiful day! Today, we are in Tokyo Station, but exploring local Tokyo town. It’s the wintertime. Since it’s the travel off-season, there are much fewer people compared to the summer. Today, we are heading to Kinshicho Station first,
Which is a super nice local town. And after that, Ryogoku Station, which is the really popular place for sumo. If we have time, we are heading to Akihabara, too. Hope you enjoy Japan local town walking. And also, it’s super close from Tokyo Station, too.
So, hope this video will help for your next Japan trip. My goal of 2024 is hitting 200,000 subscribers! Yes, I need your help. So, if you haven’t, please don’t forget to subscribe to the channel. It will really help me. Arigato!! Oh, by the way…
Hey guys! Welcome back to Rion’s TV! I’m Rion. Seeno… Gao!! All right, so let’s keep walking. Let’s go.! From Tokyo Station to Kinshicho Station, it only takes three stations away by the Sobu Line. It takes less than 10 minutes. Let’s keep walking.
Sobu Line is the blue one, so this is the way to go. Usually, there are long line in front of this Kaminari Ramen. But seems like today, it’s much fewer people. Here, small Japanese lesson: Yes, “Kaminari Ramen” meaning “Thunder Ramen.” So, “thunder” in Japanese is “kaminari.”
Most of lines in Tokyo Station is in the first floor. But Sobu Line is in the downstairs. As you see, there are just so many lines in Tokyo Station. But if it’s confusing, you can remember by the color because each line has the different color.
If you are using the Narita Express, this is also the way to go. Yep, following the blue one. This is the entrance of Sobu Line and, also, Narita Express. As you see, there are just so many escalators. It’s the long escalators.
Only one escalator going down, and other three are going up. We are using the rapid express, which is leaving from 2:25, 5 minutes from now. Seems like after that, the train is 15 minutes from now. So, seems like there are not that many lines [trains].
So, if you are using this Sobu Line rapid train, you gotta be careful because only one train for 15 minutes, which is pretty few trains thinking about it’s in Tokyo Station. Seems like it’s exactly the same platform using the Narita Express. So, if you are using the Narita Express,
This is the platform that you need to come. Here we go. This is the one. Seems like pretty empty in the train. Let’s go! So, it’s 1, 2, 3 stations away. Kinshicho Station. This is the station we are heading to. Where is it? Oh, yeah, here. There is an English translation, too.
By the way, those number meaning how many minutes it takes. So, it says “8,” that means 8 minutes it will take. Here we go! Finally, we arrived to Kinshicho! It’s much bigger station than what I thought. Huh, really interesting. Let’s explore north part of Kinshicho.
It’s my very first time to be here. Seems like it’s a big station. By the way, from Tokyo Station to Kinshicho Station, it only takes 167 Japanese yen. One thing that I realize is that I see many travelers here, too. So, probably, this is also the popular place to stay
Because it’s super close to Tokyo Station. [LAUGHS] In front of the station, I found something artistic. That looks like donuts. Sweet. By the way, today, it’s January 30th. Almost February. Yes, 13°C. So even it’s January, pretty warm. Can’t believe it. Even it’s super close from Tokyo Station,
The town’s atmosphere is a bit different. This place is much local atmosphere. And there is a huge building in front of the station. Seems like inside, there are so many places. For example, MUJI there. And McDonald’s there. Also, really? The supermarket LIFE is inside the building. Interesting. It’s super useful, huh.
And from here, we can already see the Tokyo Skytree. Yeah, probably, it’s hard to recognize. But that’s the top of Tokyo Skytree. There are so many restaurants inside. Sweet. Compared to Shinjuku and Shibuya, there are so many elder people here. That’s interesting. The town’s atmosphere, obviously, it’s different.
Seems like LIFE Supermarket is downstairs. It’s the huge supermarket. It’s super close to Tokyo Station. And we have a LIFE Supermarket. Nice. It’s the dressing corner. There are so many dressings. This Kewpie’s iri goma dressing, the “goma” means sesame seeds. My favorite dressing. I always use this whenever I eat salad.
Those are the miso areas. Yes, using for the miso soup. You feel like miso is pretty much same taste… But it’s different. Each miso tastes slightly different. So, if you love miso soup, maybe you can try that next time when you visit Japan. There are so many bentos they sell. Oh, interesting.
They sell the gapao rice with pad thai. Price is 550 Japanese yen. Good deal. That’s pasta and gratin. Price is 398 Japanese yen. This one is also a good deal, too, huh. There’s a bakery section, too. This place smells so good.
This one is a French bread with the spicy cod roe. One of my favorite, too. By the way, “French bread” in Japanese called “Furansu pan.” “Bread” in Japanese is “pan.” Let’s explore more of Kinshicho. In front of the station, there’s a police station, too. So, it’s safer. Oh, Yoshinoya here.
And also, seems like there is Don Quijote. Huh, super convenient. Oh, interesting. It’s a small Don Quijote. Yup. It does look like shitamachi. “Shitamachi” meaning “local town.” Well, don’t get me wrong. Kinshicho is a big station. But compared to Shinjuku and Shibuya, yes, it is shitamachi. Oh, interesting.
Even it’s in front of the station, there is a super classic business hotel. Probably, staying price is much cheaper. Ah, there is karaage teishoku place. They sell the bento around 700 Japanese yen. Looks pretty nice. According to the map, we can find the park. I believe this is the way.
Oh, we have Hidakaya, too. It’s like Chinese food version of Yoshinoya. It is very simple ramen, but you can eat it with 390 Japanese yen. Yeah, it’s much cheaper compared to the other place. Oh… We have gachapon here, too, but seems like it’s very old one.
This is a really popular cheap sweet in Japan. I used to eat a lot when I was a kid. And also, we have the Donbei key holder, too. It’s the instant udon. This one is my favorite. Oh, so I believe that’s a park. So, this is the Kinshi Koen.
By the way, small Japanese lesson: “Park” in Japanese is “koen.” So, this place called “Kinshi Koen.” It means “Kinshi Park.” Oh interesting. There is a small shrine. It’s the tiny shrine. But nice atmosphere, huh. Sweet. Oh my goodness… Look at this park. Super peaceful atmosphere.
And also, we can see the Tokyo Skytree, too Nice place. Oh, seems like local baseball team is practicing baseball. It’s a nice playground. It must be really fun to play baseball here. More playgrounds for small kids. Oh, look at that shopping mall. Seems like we have Nitori,
Which is the Japanese version of IKEA. And also, Yamada Denki. Really popular electric appliance store. Supermarket. Plus, Babies R Us. And Starbucks. It must be a nice place for the family to live. It’s the north part of Kinshicho. And I heard the south part of Kinshicho has a different atmosphere.
So, let’s go to check the south part of Kinshicho now. There are so many apartments. No wonder so many families living here. In south part of Kinshicho, seems like there are more taller building. Wow, south part of Kinshicho… It has totally different atmosphere compared to the north part. Interesting.
There is a Parco building, which is the popular department store here. Let’s go check the town from higher place. Oh, sweet. We can see the Tokyo Skytree really beautifully. Oh, I just realized we have Yodobashi Camera in front of the station.
There is a big bus terminal in front of the station, too. I’ve been hearing Kinshicho is a big station. But I didn’t have the chance to visit here. Now, I totally understand. It is a big station. I believe if we keep straight toward the west,
We are arriving to the Ryogoku Station, which is a really popular place for the sumo. Oh… Seems like there is the arcade. Let’s go check there. Seems like there are many restaurants in this arcade. [CHUCKLES] Look at this restaurant. Interesting. “Hustle Ramen.” Let me see what they have.
Yeah, of course. Ramen. Oh, this izayaka… All you can drink alcohol, 1,000 Japanese yen for an hour. Nice. And also, we have this spaghetti restaurant, Pancho. If you eat a lot, try this restaurant. You can literally eat a lot. Oh, interesting. That’s the futon shop.
Haven’t seen futon shop for a while. It’s really rare. Very interesting. Well, recently, most of people buy the futon online. Or maybe TV shopping or department store. I don’t know. But, yeah, it is really interesting to find a local futon shop in the town.
It does look like “shitamachi,” which means “local town.” [CHUCKLES] Well, maybe Kinshicho is not the local town, shitamachi. I don’t know… I just maybe don’t know this town. Well, if you know, please let me know in the comment. Anyways, I’m starving. Let’s find a place to eat.
Oh, we have the Taiyo No Tomato Men. I always wanted to try this restaurant. It’s the chain restaurant. They serve the tomato soup ramen with cheese, which is really interesting. Why not? Let’s try here. There’s the terrace seat, too. All right, we got a nice seat. Let’s eat here.
So, those are the menu items. This one is a soy bean tomato soup ramen. Sounds good. Oh, this one is the egg and tomato ramen. Must be pretty good, too. They have the set menu items. This one comes with ramen, rice, and, also, dessert. Why not? Let’s order this one.
Since there is empty seat inside, I asked to change the table because this place has the bigger table. And there are not that many customers now, so that I can film much easier. By the way, I just realized… Now, they have the student discount, too. If you show the student ID,
You can have the extra noodle. Cheese and tomato always tastes good. I’m really excited! Here we go. Oh my goodness, smells so nice! Tomato flavor and the cheese. Must be really good. [CHUCKLES] You know, I wear the white T-shirt inside. So, probably, I’d better wear and eat it. So, let’s eat!
By the way, there’s a rice comes together for the set menu items. I can just place the soup here, and then, I can eat like a risotto. Nice tomato flavor. Perfectly matches with cheese. I’m lovin’ it! Inside, there’s chicken and veggie, too.
Well, it can be sour, so let me place the vinegar a little bit. It is vinegar, right? Must be. It was hot, but yeah. There is a chili oil, too. Let me try the chili oil this time. Will it be super spicy? Let me see. Well, maybe I just placed too little,
So that I didn’t feel the chili flavor much. This time, maybe a little bit more. By the way, if you like the spicy noodle, they have the spicy option, too. So, originally, maybe I could order the spicy one. Dangerous. Yeah. Mmm. It became spicier.
Since I have the cheese here, definitely, the spicy version is better. We also have the rice. So… I can place the… soup here. Maybe veggie and meat, too. Oh my goodness. This one, maybe it’s not good for the Instagram. But it must be good. Itadakimasu! It is really interesting.
I kind of feel weird. because I’m in the ramen restaurant and eating ramen. But I’m eating something different. I believe this taste is more like, you know, westernized, compared to the regular ramen. Something interesting. Yeah. Last week, I watched American football. There was a semifinal in the tournament. The Lions vs. 49ers.
Well, I used to study in California, and 49ers is from San Francisco, so I wanted to go for the 49ers. However, you know, the name… It’s the Lions. So, because of the name, also, I wanted to go for the Lions, too. But yeah… That was the hardest decision I made.
And eventually, I go for the 49ers. The 49ers win and going to the Super Bowl. So, yay to the Niners! This year, Niners vs. Chiefs. I am a fan of Mahomes, too, which is the quarterback of Chiefs. So, I’m not sure which one I go for…
But anyways, I’m super excited to watch the Super Bowl! So, let’s see. And this set menu items comes with the cream puff ice cream. Haha… It’s a small dessert. Meccha oishii! Inside, there’s a cream puff. Probably, it’s meccha oishii in the summertime.
However, even inside the store, I’m wearing the heavy jacket, so my temperature is like summer. So, this ice cream… Meccha oishii! I am full! Price was 1,100 Japanese yen. Thinking about the price, it was pretty good. But maybe next time, I can order something spicy. Yeah, it must be good, too.
So now, let’s keep walking toward to the Ryogoku Station. I believe easiest way is just following that train track. But… I also believe that we can just keep straight in this big street. Then, we will get to the Ryogoku Station.
Maybe we can go to the back street to explore later. On the way, let me give you guys a small Japanese lesson: “Tomāto” in Japanese is “to-mah-to.” It’s an easy one, right? We have the katakana, so originally, word is coming from English.
So, that’s why it sounds like English, but a little bit different. “To-mah-to.” It’s like “taxi.” “Takushi.” There are so many tall apartment. But we don’t have stores here. So, Ryogoku, maybe more like the bed town, huh. As you guys know, Tokyo’s population is huge. Now, I can feel that more.
Usually, even in a big city, we can see the house. But this area, most of them, it’s only the apartment. Oh, there’s a Mini Stop. Definitely, we need a konbini since it’s a residential area. What a peaceful place. Usually, there are many restaurants under the train track.
But seems like this place, it’s the parking. This parking place is a tandem, huh. There are two cars in one slot. It is not that popular in Japan. When I used to share the apartment when I was a student in the States, we had the tandem parking lot in the apartment.
My roommate and I parked. And we both had the extra key because, sometimes, we need to move the car before we leave. I think it’s pretty common parking in the States. But yeah, not in Japan. It’s my very first time to find that, you know, the tandem parking.
Oh, seems like there is a small park and library. The public library. When I was a kid, my mom used to take us to the public library by bicycle, too. That’s a good memory. After the library, my mom always take us to the cheap sweets store.
And for me, you know, that cheap sweets store was more exciting things. But, yeah… [LAUGHS] It’s a good reward, right? Find a book and eat the cheap sweets. [LAUGHS] And here. There is another park. Probably, the Ryogoku Station is almost there. Oh, look at that! That’s something interesting and artistic.
The building is the museum, so maybe that’s why there is something artistic in front of the playground. Oh, it’s the local flower shop. [CHUCKLES] So cute. Oh, I didn’t know that. Hakuba company is here. If you are a photographer or videographer, definitely, you know the company.
I didn’t know that their company is located in Ryogoku area. Ryogoku Station must be here because we see many hotels now. In front of you, that white one is the APA Hotel. And also, that one over there… The tall building says “hotel,” too. Oh, yeah! That must be the station.
Oh, and I just realized, that’s the Edo Museum. Now, they are renewing, huh. So that we can’t enter. So, that’s the museum. We can learn the culture of Edo. But unfortunately, it’s closed now, though. And this is the sumo hall, Ryogoku Kokugikan.
Let’s keep walking to the kokugikan, which is the sumo hall. Yeah, they are renewing now. After they finish renewing, maybe we can visit here. I assume this is the way to go. Must be this way? I just realized there is a picture with the sumo wrestler.
Yeah, that one over there. It does look like Ryogoku. Wait… Where is the sumo hall? Probably in the other side… Yeah, because I believe that’s the Ryogoku Station of the JR. Oh, wait. Seems like we haven’t arrived yet. We are here, and the kokugikan is here.
So, we need to keep walking. This must be the way. This is also my very first time to visit Ryogoku Station. Oh, that’s how it looks like, huh. Interesting. In front of the station, there is Yokozuna Yokocho. [CHUCKLES] Interesting. That sounds like Ryogoku. Let’s explore the Yokozuna Yokocho.
Do we have something matters with sumo? Let me see. [CHUCKLES] Seems like it’s a regular back street though. [CHUCKLES] Oh… That’s the chanko restaurant. Chankonabe, which is the hot pot, is really popular for the sumo wrestler. Well, maybe it’s my stereotyping, but for Japanese, sumo wrestlers’ food, what they eat,
For us, it’s the chankonabe. So, for me, this is like super Ryogoku. Huh, looking pretty good. The price is 3,080 Japanese yen for the miso one. Maybe I should try it one day in the future. By the way, “yokocho” means “alley.” So, this place is the Yokozuna Alley.
Oh, that’s also the chanko hot pot restaurant. Here, small Japanese trivia: After usually we eat, we have the greeting “gouchisousama deshita.” Like “itadakimasu” before eating. After we eat, we say, “Gouchisousama deshita.” But for the sumo wrestler, they have the word of “gottsuandesu,” meaning “gouchisousama deshita.”
It is a little bit different. And I think only the sumo wrestler use. So, if you have a chance to eat with the sumo wrestler, maybe you can use the “gottsuandesu.” Yup. Well, we don’t use, but that’s a pretty common Japanese. So probably, the sumo hall is in the other side.
Oh, here! Looks like more Ryogoku Station. Well, I thought this is the map, but it’s more like restaurant map. So, this is not what we need to use. Oh, so this is the map! We are here. And kokugikan is here. So, we need to keep straight. Let’s keep walking.
Oh, what is this place? Seems like it’s the Ryogoku something. Oh, interesting… It looks like so Japan, huh. And it looks like the sumo wrestler’s sumo place. Seems like they have the sumo show here. It’s really specific time, but it’s free to enter.
I believe real sumo wrestler appears here and showing the show here. So, definitely, it would be fun for travelers. If you are interested in sumo, probably, you can visit here in the showtime. It’s my very first time to check the sumo ring such closely. Oh my goodness. That’s super interesting.
And we have the 7-Eleven, sumo version. [CHUCKLES] Interesting. Yup. It does look like Japan. We also have the sumo wrestler souvenirs here, too. Sweet. Okay, so let’s keep walking toward to Ryogoku, which is a sumo hall. Oh, yeah! This must be the one.
I can tell from the outside because I’ve seen so many times on T.V. Speaking of the sumo season, they just have several times in a year. And they just finished the Tokyo place last Sunday. So, probably, no sumo wrestler today. Each sumo competition is in a different place.
And then the last time, it was Tokyo. And the next one, I’m not sure where it is. Maybe in Osaka. So basically, they spend a year and having several competition in many places, in a big city in Japan. If you want to watch sumo, probably, you need to find the season.
And then after that, you need to find a place. And eventually, you need to find the ticket. But a good ticket, it is really tough to get it, so good luck to it. But if it’s the, you know, kind of like far place ticket,
Probably you can get it, so it would be an interesting experience. Oh, APA hotel is just in front of the kokugikan, which is a sumo hall here. It’s located in a super convenient place, huh Wait. Where is the entrance of kokugikan? [LAUGHS] Maybe we can’t enter. It’s okay. Let’s go back.
I usually don’t watch the sumo, but my parents love watching sumo. So, maybe one day, I can come back here with my parents. Oh, wait! [LAUGHS] I just realized there is the entrance over there! It’s just in front of the station! So, yeah… [LAUGHS] We have the perfect word for this.
It’s a proverb in Japanese: “Todai moto kurashi,” meaning it’s hard to see what is under your nose. [LAUGHS] Yeah. Todai Moto kurashi. It’s the perfect word for now. And this is… Now is not the season. We can’t enter. But we can see from the outside. Nice place.
It’s only two stations away. So, let’s keep walking toward to Akihabara Station. By the way, this is the street in front of Ryogoku Station. Nice atmosphere. Now, I changed my mind. Since I found a rental bike here, why don’t we use the bicycle to go to Akihabara? Let’s bike!
It only cost 165 Japanese yen for 30 minutes, so it’s pretty cheap. You need to register the credit card before using it though. So, let’s keep biking. Oh, I just realized there is a sumo sculpture here. Yup, it does looks like Ryogoku. Let’s go. Oh, I found something interesting.
Seems like this is the Temple of Ryogoku. Huh… Super fancy, huh. We are at Sumidagawa Station. After crossing this bridge, already Asakusabashi Station. And Akihabara is almost there. The sunset time, Sumidagawa River’s scenery… Super beautiful. All right, here we go. We arrived to the parking lot.
Let’s see how long I used. Uh, can I see? Oh, no, it’s already we can’t see that. It’s okay. And we can walk from here. If you are walking from Tokyo Station, you will use this way, too. We can just keep straight under the train track.
Probably most of them walking toward to Akihabara Station. If you are walking by yourself, you feel like, “Am I walking the correct way?” But around this time, there are just so many people walking toward to Akihabara Station. So, you can know this is the way.
After passing this river, it’s already the Akihabara Station’s area. Almost there. Probably, if you have visited Akihabara, after crossing this street, already you can realize where we are. It’s actually south part of Akihabara Station. The main part of Akihabara Station, we just need to turn right over here.
Here we go. Did you realize where we are? Maybe not yet? [LAUGHS] Look at that T-shirt. “Haibokusha,” meaning “loser.” [LAUGHS] Interesting T-shirts. Here we go. That’s the station. Probably, if we see left side, you know where we are. Yes, we are already… …almost the center of the Akihabara Station.
Akihabara is really popular travel spot, but it’s also popular spot for the company. I mean many companies exist here. So, around this time, there are so many salarymen going back home from the company. And we are in the main street of Akihabara. In the nighttime, Akihabara Station… It’s really beautiful. Wait.
Do we have this building before? For me, it seems like the new building. Not sure. If you know, please let me know in the comment. Even this travel off-season, Akihabara…. is always crowded. I’ve been hearing so many Korean language. So probably, there are many Korean travelers. The main street is too crowded.
So, let’s go to my favorite spot. Probably, there are much fewer people over there. It’s just this way. It’s the second floor of UDX building. I always go from outside. But we can go through from inside the building, too. Yup. I also need to go to restroom.
By the way, “restroom” in Japanese is “toire.” Really simple, right? Here we go. See you soon! Oh, the wagyu Shogun Burger. Interesting. Maybe I can try next time. We can just get out from this entrance. And… My hidden spot is over here. Yup… Do you guys remember? The street, but here… No one.
So finally, we came back to the Akihabara Station. How was it? I usually explore the popular places. But today, we explored the local town of Tokyo, which is closer to Tokyo Station. So that maybe if you are interested in, next time when you visit Japan, you can explore the area, too.

All right, so hope you enjoyed the video! See you in next video! Seeno… (Ready, set…) Gaooo!! (Lion roar in Japanese) Have a great day! Bye-bye! Oh, finally, January is over. And we have one more month for the winter, which is February. But February, we only have 28?
I’m not sure this year. But yeah, we have shorter days. That means spring and summer is coming. Yes. Well, during summer, it was too hot, so I missed winter. And I was like, you know, “Oh, I miss kind of coldness.” “And I want to do the winter sports.”
But after it gets cold, I realize again that love summer! I know… Well, I always think that I should appreciate now more. But, yeah… You know… We always miss something we don’t have. And now, I’m missing summer, and I can’t wait. But anyways, before summer is coming,
I want to see the snow at least once. And I want to try the winter sports, too. So, let me see where to go. Huh… I haven’t decided yet though. But again, we only have February left, so yeah. Probably, I’d better make the decision as quick as possible. So, let me see.
See you soon! [MUSIC]

That was such a fun exploration! Can you take us to Shirokanedai and visit the Happo-en gardens? There's soooo much to explore around Shirokanedai!

Thank you for your videos. Go 49ers!!!
It was so awesome seeing you in Shinjuku! Can’t believe we got so lucky to run into you right before the crosswalk. Can’t wait to continue seeing what great content you continue to have 🙂 it was my wife’s birthday when we meet you, such a great birthday surprise 😂. Too bad my toddler didn’t realize what a celebrity she was missing out on 😅
Great video to show another side of Japan.I only remember kinshicho station as a place where Pokémon players gather 😅 thanks
OMG we were at Akihabara during night on 30Jan and me & my husband stayed at APA Ryogoku that you went!! Quite sad I couldn’t meet you during my vacation at Japan. Hope to see you when I visit Japan again!!
I had stayed in Kinshicho station when I was in Japan and I didn't realise until you shared with us in this video. It was familiar and when I saw what was outside the station, I'm quite sure. It was cheaper in terms of standard of living compared to the popular tourist spot. Good place.
Rion, stop being so damn cheap when it comes to eating. It’s amazing that you will buy these highend Apple Watches , camera equipment but when it comes to eating you nickel and dime how much you spend. Lol 😂😂😂😂
Rion I saw you ride the rental bike how do you know where to park it when finished i want to ride a bike too when I come to visit soon
Skutočne veľmi zaujímavé a užitočné informácie vo videu ďakujem
For winter sports, I would recommend snowboarding or ice skating. However if you want to do something that requires no thought, go snow tubing. That is really fun and you can record a lot of cool videos too. Thanks again for the video. Love these videos!
Go 49ers! Thank you for your videos. Very helpful in planning our visit in April!
RIONさんは何歳ですか。
Arigatougozaimasu, Rion, for highlighting Sumo wrestling on this episode and for introducing me to the Sumo museum. Grand Sumo is one of my favorite sports to watch. One day I hope to see a Grand Sumo tournament in Japan. 👍🇯🇵

Could you make a video on Yuzawa some day? 😀
We visited Kinshicho on our last visit to pick up something at Parco. Since we were in a rush we didn't walk around the area beyond the station. Thanks for showing us around the area, will spend more time there next time. Happy to hear you are a Forty Niner fan, I am rooting for them too!

Hello Ishida-san. We just got back from Japan and we stayed at Tobu Hotel Levant near Kinshicho Station. Your video feels surreal and I already miss Japan.
Thank you for taking us on the trip. I saw a Canadian flag. Virtual Japan sometimes takes us on a bike ride.
