Link to Part I of the trip –
This is the second half of the 15 days Iceland trip in the pursuit of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and my long standing wish to free dive in the Silfra Fissure (the gap between the tectonic plates of America and Europe) located in Thingvellir national park.
They say the southern equivalent of the northern lights, aurora australis are only seen by penguins and scientists! One of the main reason I travelled here was to witness the Aurora Borealis in person…the breathtaking view is just so magical that you would start believing in god!
But then the pursuit for the northern lights since the day arrived has been long, waiting game and definitely fruitful! Here is the breakdown of the pursuit-
Dec 23- headed out of the city light towards Grótta lighthouse, waited for 2 hrs but no sighting!
Dec 24 – considerable cloud cover, did not attempt
Dec 25- headed to Thingvellir National Park and waited for 2.30 hrs, very faint activity! Still was elated to see some activity
Dec 28 – drove an hour from my hostel and got to where there was clear skies and considerably less cloud and waited for 1.30 hrs but no sightings, may be I was in the wrong location. Forecast was moderate
Dec 30 – drove along with few other folks from France towards east from hofn and waited for 30 mins and Mother Nature decided to take pity on me and made a fair appearance, I was still happy! 😃
Dec 31 – I was at my accommodation and this guy from next door came knocking to inform there was some activity outside and we ran to see the flares of the light which lasted for couple of mins. Still happy! 😃
Jan 3rd – I got the Akureyri and decided to go with a tour so I get a better chance to hunt the northern lights with someone more knowledgeable. Forecast was moderate, but the activity was very faint. They gave me a complementary sighting either the next day or the day after. The forecast for both of the days were good, but better the day later, so I decided to go for second sighting with the tour on Jan 4th
Jan 4th – me along with my other comrades from Ireland and Nepal went hunting on our own towards the north, we drove about an hour from the city lights and headed to a town called Dalvík…and there I could witness yet again one of the strongest activity throughout my pursuit. I was just dancing!! Lol 😝
Jan 5 – this was the luckiest day of all. The Aurora Borealis were flaring left and right. I just could not believe what I saw above me. I was just speechless… 😍
