Europe’s COVID-19 Impact Report: Examining The 10 Hardest-Hit Nations

With nearly 280 million cases as of February 2024, Europe has been the continent hardest hit by COVID-19. However, there is a huge difference between the various European countries. The nation with the fewest infections has had 10,500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the one with the most infections has had 74,400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is very difficult to quantify the exact number of deaths, as different countries have counted deaths in different ways, but it is estimated that the virus has been the cause or co-cause of 2.3 million deaths in Europe.

THE CHALLENGE OF COUNTING COVID-19 DEATHS
In this video, we will rank the countries based on the number of cases, not the number of deaths. This is because there has been no common standard across the European continent (and the world) for counting deaths. Some countries have only reported deaths due to Covid, while others have also reported deaths with Covid.

Deaths due to Covid indicate a clear direct link between the presence of the virus and the death of the individual. In these cases, Covid-19 is the main cause of death, without any other significant complications contributing to the final outcome. The most common causes of death due to Covid include severe viral pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), respiratory failure, and other serious complications caused directly by the virus.

Deaths with Covid represent a more nuanced situation. Here, the virus is present in the individual’s body, but it may not be the main cause of death. Instead, other factors such as pre-existing diseases, complications from other pathologies, accidents or trauma, may have contributed to the death. In these circumstances, Covid-19 may have aggravated the individual’s already compromised health condition, but it is not the only one responsible for the tragic outcome.

The lack of uniformity in the way Covid-19 deaths are counted makes it impossible to rank countries based on deaths.
