WORTH THE WAIT?? I return to Bergamo, after 38 years(!) with my travel diary from 1986.
You know how it is. Things get in the way. It took me 38 years to return to Bergamo, and I brought along my 1986 travel diary of the day to retrace my steps.

Thank you, Scott! Yet another great video of a great journey! I enjoyed the bounds of the town as I used my earphones this time… I know Bergamo for Carlo Goldoni's comedy "The servant of Two Masters" and its main character Truffaldino (the 18th century comedy was turned into a film in my country in 1976 so everyone heard of Berasmo π)…
Thank you for yet another good video and the warmest greetings from St.Petersburg, Russia!
As soon as I saw the title of this video I was so pleased to see you back in Italy. Bergamo is wonderful as are the thousands of small and medium sized towns all over Italy. I've bern living here now for nearly 50 years and I absolutely adore Italy.
Great vlog mate, Really enjoying your videos, very entertaining
Funiculars are always fun. Looks as if that one has overhead wires?
Hey. I dont know if you or anyone will ever read this but seeing this video really made me tear up a little bit.
For the last 10-15 Years I struggled with heavy depression. I mean now its better thanks to many hours of therapy and hard work, No more suicidal thoughts etc.
But years ago it was really bad and I had 2 friends that helped me open up which ultimately kind of saved my life.
One of them used to live in Bergamo and also had a troubled past. We supported each other and that resulted in me going to Bergamo multiple times. Travelling alone facing my agoraphobia and social anxiety.
That airport, the station building where I always got off the bus and met her, the walk from stazione to the funicolar (I always used to stay in a small Apartment in the upper funicolar station actually). Seeing you walking the same very streets I used to roam around. Where I sat down in the lunch breaks of my friend (she was studying in the bergamo university) right infront of the white building at the old town square. During covid (which bergamo was the first european city that had been hit really badly if you remember) sadly most of my friends family passed away and she moved to portugal to create a better life for her kids (we met there again because at that time I lived in Lisbon) which means that since a few months before covid, I have not been to bergamo anymore and I dont really find time/reason for it… but this brought back so many memories.
Right now times are not easy for me. Not as bad as they used to be but also not as good as they have been a few months ago.
I kind of lost touch to both of this friends, work is great but work sometimes is exhausting and doesnt pay back anything but money.. and money doesnt mean much when you are not healthy.. But there will be better times again!
But im not here to complain. Anyone who is still reading shouldnt have to read all this. I guess what I want to say is:
Thanks for bringing back memories. Bergamo (and Treviglio, you should visit if you ever have the chance, such a nice place!) helped me in very bad times and it will always have a special place in my heart! It means so much this video and I hope you know what Impact you have with such videos. Yes we dont know and we will probably never meet, but you made my day/week a lot better and I thank you so much for it, words cant describe!
Have you walked through the Rotherhithe Tunnel, as Jago Hazzard did one time (but never again)? That might push even your fondness for tunnels π
Back in 1954 or 1955 my grandfather worked at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington. He was always very open, so when Nino Rimoldi came over from Bergamo on a visit he befriended him. In 1956 Nino and his wife Lisetta invited my grandparents to visit them and their family in Bergamo. That was a year before I was born, so Bergamo has been part of my entire life. They brought back a little plaque of an Italian house which hangs in my kitchen to this day and, of course, Nino and Lisetta have never been forgotten.
I was yelling "Yes" to the pizza and beer. What a spectacular city. Absolutely enchanting. Good place to put on my visit list! Thank you for sharing this city.
a flash from your past…….enjoyer the trip…thanks
Thanks for the unintended reminder, it's my rubbish collection bin van thing day tomorrow, so I need to make sure I leave it out before I go to bed tonight. Thanks Scott!
Well.that was a lovely video what amuses me i may have said afore its when you find food n drink you like the expressions but what a loverly town to visit the buildings are wonderful π thanks for sharing π
Surely it's programmed into a large group of 10 year olds to make noise at any opportunity? And when the surrounding buildings amplify that noise several times over, it would seem a dereliction of duty not to π
But props to Scott for re-visiting Bergamo. Not sure why he visited in the first place. I'm probably a similar age to him and I went Interrailing in 1987. We visited the obvious places – Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples – forget why we skipped Rome (probably too expensive – unlike Scott, shamefully I didn't keep a diary). But I wouldn't have heard of Bergamo a the time and I think the place only entered my consciousness when I discovered the football team Atalanta were from there. And then it became the epicentre of Corona in Italy…
And yes the toilets on FS. Peeing onto the train tracks was a novelty. a bit like having a pee in the woods π
Such a lovely place to live great video like to see more of βthis type of videos
Well that's it Scott publish your travel journal and my Baedecker Guides are in the bin.
I've watched a few of this guys videos and it always seem like he has a dry mouth or a lisp?
Great stuff mate, I just watched your London to Amsterdam bus video, I'll be doing that trip soon so thanks for the tips! I subscribed.
Great videos Scott. Yes I remember those days of traveling before the internet. Mine was in late 70's back pack, thumb and some rail travel. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Scott, you need to spend at least ten days in Milan and Bergamo. A lot to see.
Wonderful memories of Bergamo having visited with my parents, daughter and best friend. My friend lives in Bergamo with his family. Must go back soon….
Another beautiful place I must visit! I love Italy.
Great video, very interesting! I wonder if there's a name for that Ice Cream, it looked like 3 cones spliced together!
I went to italy 2 years ago and when riding a regional train, I found a hole in the ground. Needless to say I filled it
Does look like a rustic and beautiful part of Italy. Scott, it's unfortunaye that you had no old photographs of this place as a reference to landmarks. Oh, well a lovely vlog all the same.π
Thank you for taking me along!
you have tunnel-philia, i have funicular-philia, if that's a thingπ the one in bergen has been the best ever for me, but i guess i'd have to add bergamo's to my list too. cheers scott, thanks for the video!
38 years ago I was 3 months old
What a picturesque town Bergamo is, great to visit again after 38 years π Always parties of school children anywhere !! π
Wow keeping part of a journal for 38 years. I think i only have exam certificates and my National insurance card that are older than that.
I done something similar with Innsbruck (26 year gap), now I go back there every 2 years. Recommend Innsbruck old town and double it up with a trip to the top of Nordkette, would make a great film for you. Enjoy all your fil.s Scott π
Brill video Scott. Looks a lovely city. That's now on my bucket list after watching this video.
Side note: You must have some metabolism, you never put any weight on from drinking beers, coffee and pizza ha ha.
Super
Once again, a visit by you to a city/place many of us don't even think about or will ever get to. Now I hope you don't encourage the tourist mobs to take over another place.
Absolutely love Bergamo after visiting last year, I ate in the same cafe and got the delicious casoncelli. They're so proud of their local produce and recipes. Such a gorgeous place – it's really close to the beautiful lake iseo too, all the beauty of Como and Garda and none of the crowds
"Brown locomotives. Who thought that was a good idea?"
Crosscountry: "Hey, let's have brown trains. They'll look very Italian."
Another Planes and Trains Everything Banger πππ₯π₯
