Japan: Is a Guided Tour Worth It?

Avoid the tourist traps and travel like a local with Magical Trip. They offer various small group tours to give you a truly local experience. We decided to try the Sushi Cooking Class, which included a trip to the supermarket to pick up ingredients. In addition to Sushi, you also learn how to make some traditional Japanese side dishes.

  1. That tour looks like fun, with sushi, sake and shopping for ingredients. Wonderful to have an activity to do when visiting Japan, especially if you have family or kids.

  2. Very cool. Making the meal would be fun because some ingredients are hard to find in the US, at least where I am. Especially the green veggies in the sushi roll (shisho? And the other one, I forget, lol, I don't think Nivea seen here), and taking the mystery out of the miso soup and egg would make me more confident trying it at home. Thank you!

  3. Love this video and the bonus of seeing one of your older videos that was before I found your channel… Love that hair Shinichi!!! Thanks for all you do, both of you!

  4. I do not like guided tours w/large groups at all. I personally prefer a PRIVATE tour with a very flexible schedule. That way you r not limited to a certain time frame if something catches your interest and you want to spend more time than the tour โ€œallocatedโ€ for that activity. I just did a private one in Tokyo and it was awesome! Also, did all private tours in a multi week tour to Italy. They r well worth the money!

  5. No large group, bus-riding tours for me, but focused-interest, small tours with a knowledgeable guide, like this one, are fabulous. ๐Ÿ‘Sho was enthusiastic, energetic, informative, and fun. Also, cute. ๐Ÿ˜Š Using Magical Trip looks like a good way to have a rewarding local experience.
Btw, I also love adventure tours ๐ŸŽ‰ and have done several horse-packing, hiking, and rafting/kayaking tours. Nothing like being out in nature for a couple of weeks.

  6. I wouldn't really call it a tour. You go shopping for food and you cook it with the person. It's more like a cooking class, than a tour. During tours, you visit many places and learn many things about them, which was not the case here. Sho was very cute, though. I'll definitely go have a look at his channel.

  7. Not exactly what I would define as a guided tour but rather an "experience". That being said, it seems like a fun time, plenty of people tend to skip over actual supermarkets in favor of a convenience store.

  8. Just looking at the guide makes the tour worth it for me. ๐Ÿ˜‚ He's gorgeous.
I don't want to sound thirsty, but when a man is that good-looking, he deserves a compliment, right?

  9. So the concept of the video is, is the sponsor of this video worth doing? Pretending you donโ€™t know any of this stuff was so awkward! Come on guys, youโ€™re better than this.

  10. I laughed when I saw the introduction to Onigoroshi sake, those who are acquainted with recent anime will know that this is the favorite drink of Hiroi Kikuri from the anime "Bocchi the Rock!" because it's cheap and easily available.

  11. Agree that a guide for any foreign or new scenario is potentially terrific – made even more so if one chooses intelligently, and tries to match the depth and tenor of the guidance to your needs and particular interests. Sho was terrific. He'd be dynamite for young people (or at least young at heart), new to Japan, and its food rituals. -Really enjoyed this video, and was sorry there wasn't another stop or experience with Sho. I liked the two of you prepping foods you presumed was familiar, but Sho educated with new detail. Nice dynamic.

  12. I havenโ€™t had eggplant in years because the way it was prepared was disgusting, I just may buy it and try it this way..thank you gentlemen!!

  13. I love the idea of a personal Tokyo experience like this. It would be a special memory to add to my visit! Thanks for sharing. ๐Ÿคฉ

  14. What a great tour system! This is so much better than the "point-and-babble" method. Actually doing things that everyday people do! Thank you for sharing this.

  15. Around 2minute mark there's a music playing on loop while they are grocery shopping – can you share what the title or a link to the music please? It's been on loop in my head and I've never been able to find it online. Thanks in advance!
